Dubai: Dasun Shanaka and Sikandar Raza struck unbeaten half-centuries as they steered Dubai Capitals to a stunning seven-wicket victory over MI Emirates in the 29th match of the DP World ILT20 at the Dubai International Stadium in front of a large Sunday crowd.

Chasing MI Emirates’ 164 for 7, Dasun Shanaka and Sikandar Raza scored unbeaten knocks of 58 and 56 runs respectively off 36 deliveries each. Shanaka hit five boundaries and three sixes while Raza scored four boundaries and four sixes. Though MI Emirates have already qualified for the playoff, Dubai Capitals now moves to the fourth spot with nine points, above Sharjah Warriors. The clash between Sharjah Warriors with seven points and Gulf Giants, who are in the second slot, at Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Monday will thus decide the last spot in the playoffs.

MI Emirates’ opener Andre Fletcher hit two consecutive boundaries off Fred Klaassen in the first over but fell to the first ball of the second over from Jake Ball edging to wicket-keeper Robin Uthappa for 9. One-drop Bas de Leede followed falling leg before to Ball’s fourth delivery of the same over for 2.

Lorcan Tucker, who joined opener Muhammad Waseem, took two boundaries off Hazrat Luqman who bowled the third over. Waseem too smashed Ball for a boundary to mid-on, and then in the next over he hit the first six of the match off Akif Raja into the mid-wicket stands. Tucker on 21 got bowled by Sikandar Raza when he missed a paddle sweep. At the end of the powerplay, MI Emirates was 58 for 3.

Adam Zampa, as usual, was introduced for the seventh over. Waseem hit his second six off Raza over midwicket in the eighth over but got clean bowled by Zampa in the ninth over while attempting a slog sweep for 31. At the halfway mark, MI Emirates was 77 for 4. Dan Mousely got dropped on 3 by Dasun Shanaka off Luqman despite getting to the ball running in from the square leg.

Pooran played some aggressive shots and took the score past the 100-run mark in the 14th over. Zampa, who was re-introduced for the 17th over, was greeted by Pooran with a six to square leg but he fell to the fourth ball of that over caught at sweep cover by Klaassen for 43. Jordan Thompson hit Klaassen for two sixes in the 19th over to take the score past the 150-mark. Thompson got out to the first ball of the last over lofting Ball straight to Powell at mid-off for 16. In the last five overs, MI Emirates scored 48 runs and lost three wickets to post a challenging total of 164 for 7 in 20 overs.

Brad Wheal, opening the bowling for MI Emirates, gave away just four runs in his first over while Craig Overton yielded just one run in the second over. In the third over Dubai Capitals opener, Robin Uthappa hit Wheal for a six and Munsey too picked a boundary off him. Munsey also hit Overton for a six to accelerate the run flow. Uthappa then hit Zahoor Khan for a six to the backward square but fell to Overton in the sixth over slashing and edging to the wicketkeeper Tucker for 29.

At the end of the power play, Dubai Capitals was 44 for 1. Munsey too quickly followed miscuing a reverse sweep to Wheal off left-arm spinner Zahir Khan for 14. Two balls later, he took the prize wicket of Rovman Powell who slog-swept to Mousley for a duck. Khan yielded no runs from that over too.

Sikandar Raza and Dasun Shanaka took the score to 62 for 3 in 10 overs. Needing 103 runs from the last ten overs, Raza went for his shots and hit Zahir Khan for a six to long-on and also scored two boundaries off that over. Shanaka too hit Zahoor Khan who was introduced for the 13th over for a six and a boundary. Their partnership strengthened and runs began to flow easily.

From the last five overs, Dubai Capitals needed 37 runs after Shanaka had punished Jordan Thompson for 15 runs which included six and two boundaries. Shanaka reached his half-century in 32 balls and the pair recorded their century partnership in 60 balls. Raza too reached his half-century in 34 balls with a six off Thompson. Las Vegas-style wedding in Dubai: Marriage licence in just 24 hrs

    [ad_1]

Abu Dhabi: Dubai is set to become the Las Vegas of the Middle East, in terms of completing civil marriage procedures in less than 24 hours, the  British newspaper The Times reported.

Under the new expatriate family law that came into force on February 1, 2023, non-Muslim residents getting married in Dubai will be able to get their marriage licence in just 24 hours.

Non-Muslims eligible for civil marriage in Dubai must be at least 21-year-old, unmarried and at least one resident of Dubai.

On February 1, the UAE began implementing a new federal law that covers marriage, divorce, child custody, and inheritance for non-Muslim citizens and expatriates residing in the country.

In 2022, UAE became the first country in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) to legalize mixed civil marriage in Abu Dhabi, which has attracted 6,000 couples so far from 127 nations. As many as 830 Indian couples have tied the knot under the new civil law.

The reforms were first approved by the late UAE president Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan on November 27, 2021. Out of the seven emirates, only Abu Dhabi adopted the new reforms in November 2022.

But now UAE is preparing to adopt these reforms in all its lands, which means that these reforms will reach Dubai, which will make this international tourist destination a favorite place for quick weddings.

Tourists and expatriates living in the country were able to get married there before the new law, but it was a more complicated and lengthy process.

Dubai’s rulers appear to be relaxing laws in a bid to encourage tourism in the city, which was a top destination for Brits in 2022 and is home to around 250,000 British residents, according to Skyscanner.

Dubai: Customer suffers burns as waiter spills liquid nitrogen; offered free meal

    [ad_1]

Abu Dhabi: A diner at a high-end Japanese restaurant Tabu in Downtown Dubai, suffered minor burns after a waiter accidentally spilt liquid nitrogen on her back during a theatrical presentation of dishes.

Aline Fleihan, an architect who lives in Saudi Arabia, when on a visit to Dubai and dining with her friends at a restaurant when the alleged incident happened.

The incident happened on Friday, January 20. “We were four at the table. About an hour later, the waiter was passing by, carrying a large tray above his head that was packed with food and drinks and the liquid nitrogen container. He dropped it by accident, and it fell on my back,” Aline told Khaleej Times.

Aline Fleihan, took to Twitter to slam the restaurant for dropping a tray of liquid nitrogen on her back— which resulted in instant burns all over the contact areas.

“I am so frustrated and traumatised of what happened to me on Friday night as I was having dinner in Tabu, where the waiter dropped a tray with liquid nitrogen on my back and caused burns all over my neck and back and I had to complete my night at the ER,” Aline tweeted.

“It is such a shame the amount of irresponsibility and ignorance the management dealt with such an incident especially that Tabu is one of the prestigious restaurants in #Dubai,” Aline said.

“Actually they offered me a dinner for 4 to compensate the damage!” Aline adds.

Aline warns about the dangers of liquid nitrogen, “LN2 is a dangerous chemical of -196 degrees. Please be cautious whenever you go to restaurants, they use this chemical to do shows (smoke) in food and beverages.”

As per media reports, according to Aline people around her thought she was on fire because of the amount of smoke immediately after the liquid nitrogen was dropped on her.

David Lescar, the founder of Japanese restaurant Tabu, called the incident unfortunate in an email to Khaleej Times and said the restaurant was “extremely sorry” about the “guest experience”.

  • US lawmakers press to remove oil boss from leading COP28 climate talks

US lawmakers press to remove oil boss from leading COP28 climate talks

    [ad_1]

    un climate letter 77107

A group of U.S. lawmakers wants the Biden administration to ask the United Arab Emirates to remove the oil company chief the country chose to lead the next U.N. climate talks — or at a minimum “seek assurances” that the UAE will promote an ambitious COP28 summit.

In a letter to Special Presidential Climate Envoy John Kerry, 27 members of the House and Senate called for him to “urge” the UAE to withdraw the appointment of UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, who is also the CEO of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, to lead the COP28 discussions, which start November 30 in Dubai. The company is one of the world’s largest oil producers.

“The appointment of an oil company executive to head COP 28 poses a risk to the negotiation process as well as the whole conference itself,” said the note, which was shared exclusively with POLITICO.

“To help ensure that COP 28 is a serious and productive climate summit, we believe the United States should urge the United Arab Emirates to name a different lead for COP 28 or, at a minimum, seek assurances that it will promote an ambitious COP 28 aligned with the 1.5 degrees Celsius limit,” the lawmakers added.

Kerry — along with other climate diplomats, including the EU’s Frans Timmermans — has repeatedly defended Al Jaber’s appointment in recent weeks, calling him a “terrific choice” in an interview with the Associated Press. Kerry also said ADNOC understood the need to shift its business away from fossil fuels. Kerry’s office was not immediately available to comment on the letter.

A COP28 spokesperson, who had not seen the letter, defended Al Jaber’s record “as a diplomat, minister, and business leader across the energy and renewables industry.” They highlighted his role as founder of renewables company Masdar, calling it “one of the world’s largest renewable energy company with clean energy investments in over 40 countries.”

“His experience uniquely positions him to be able to convene both the public and private sector to bring about pragmatic solutions to achieve the goals and aspirations of the Paris Climate Agreement,” the spokesperson said.

But the U.S. lawmakers noted the long history of fossil fuel industry interference in climate talks.

“Having a fossil fuel champion in charge of the world’s most important climate negotiations would be like having the CEO of a cigarette conglomerate in charge of global tobacco policy. It risks undermining the very essence of what is trying to be accomplished,” they wrote.

Indian drunk driver jailed for injuring pedestrian in Dubai

    [ad_1]

Dubai: An 39-year-old Indian man has been sentenced to one month in jail in Dubai and fined Dh10,000 after he drove over a woman’s legs, leaving her seriously injured.

The Dubai Court of Appeal also found the Indian, who was driving under the influence of alcohol, guilty of fleeing the accident scene and revoked his deportation order, The National reported.

The man, driving his Nissan Patrol out of the car park of a hotel in Bur Dubai’s Al Mankhool area last November, failed to see a woman sitting on the pavement with her legs stretched out into the road.

“We were in the car together when the incident happened,” the man’s friend told the court, The National reported.

“He (the driver) stopped the car so I stepped out to check on the woman but he drove off,” he said.

He was later tracked down and arrested, the report said, adding that the offender admitted to the charges during a police probe and in court.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has a zero-tolerance policy to drunk driving, which is a criminal offense.

“According to Article 393 of UAE’s traffic law, offenders causing a road death can face between one month and three years in prison or a fine as decided by the court,” Nida Al Masri, a legal consultant from Justitia Advocates and Legal Consultants, told The National.

Gold is not just a precious metal but its rates in Hyderabad, Dubai, Riyadh and other big cities of the world indicate the market trends. The rates of the yellow metal depend on various factors including geopolitical stability, wars, pandemic, uncertainties, etc.

As gold is also a commodity, its rates depend on demand and supply. In case of any uncertainty, the rates of yellow metal increase drastically as investors consider it save heaven.

However, during the market boom period, its rates return to normal as investors start exploring options that can give them higher returns when compared to gold.

Apart from demand-supply, local factors also contribute to the gold rates in Hyderabad, Dubai, Riyadh, and other important cities across the world.

    Gold rates in Hyderabad

Gold rates in Hyderabad and other cities in India depend on various factors including its currency exchange rates as the country is a net importer of the yellow metal.

If the dollar rate goes up against the rupee, India has to spend more to import gold thereby making the yellow metal costly in the local market.
