TN: Filmmaker turned politician booked for comments on migrant workers

    [ad_1]

Chennai: Actor turned politician, Naam Tamizhar Katchi (NTK) leader Seeman would face fresh charges for speaking against migrant workers, a senior police official said here on Sunday.

A case was registered against the NTK leader by Erode (Karungalpalayam) police on February 22, 2023 for making ‘derogatory remarks’ against a community while addressing a public meeting in the western city on February 13.

“In the same speech he (Seeman) has also spoken against migrant workers threatening foisting of cases against them. Hence, to take legal action in this regard, further sections have been added in this case,” a senior State police official said.

The police action comes days after Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin had reassured his Bihar counterpart Nitish Kumar that all migrant workers in the southern state are safe and the police have registered cases against two journalists including the editor of a Hindi daily for spreading rumours about attacks on migrants.

  • Liquor policy case: Kavitha to appear before ED today, BRS workers gather outside KCR’s residence

Liquor policy case: Kavitha to appear before ED today, BRS workers gather outside KCR’s residence

    [ad_1]

Delhi: As Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLC and Telangana chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao’s daughter K Kavitha, is scheduled to appear before the Enforcement Directorate today for questioning in connection to the Delhi liquor policy case, the party workers and supporters have gathered outside the residence of KCR in the national capital.

Earlier on Friday, Kavitha launched a hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in the national capital demanding the introduction of the Women’s Reservation Bill in the current Budget session of Parliament.

Citing her hunger strike scheduled in Delhi on Friday, she asked the probe agency to postpone her questioning till Saturday.

Notably, former Delhi deputy CM Manish Sisodia has been arrested by ED in the same case.

She had arrived in the national capital on March 8, hours after the ED issued a summons for questioning.
BRS leader KT Rama Rao on Friday also arrived at the residence of his father in the national capital.

According to sources, Kavitha will be made to sit face-to-face with Hyderabad-based businessman Arun Ramchandra Pillai, who was arrested in connection with the liquor policy case on Monday night.

The MLC termed the summons as “tactics of intimidation” by the Centre against the Telangana chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao and the BRS, adding that the party will continue to fight and expose the Centre’s failures and will raise its voice for a brighter and better future for India.

“I would also like the ruling party at the Centre to know that these tactics of intimidation against the fight and voice of our leader, CM KCR, and against the entire BRS party will not deter us. Under the leadership of KCR Garu, we will continue to fight to expose your failures and raise voice for a brighter and better future for India,” Kavitha said in a tweet.

On March 8, the BRS came down heavily on the Centre after the ED summoned Kavitha in connection with its ongoing probe in the Delhi excise policy case, saying that the central probe agencies have become an extended arm of the BJP.

Referring to the summons as “politically motivated”, BRS leader Ravula Sridhar Reddy had said that except ED and BJP, nobody really understands the case registered in connection with the new-withdrawn new Delhi excise policy.

In its investigation, ED has come to know that Pillai is one of the key persons in the entire scam involving payments of huge kickbacks and the formation of the biggest cartel of the South Group.

South Group comprises Telangana MLC Kavitha, Sarath Reddy (promoter of Aurobindo Group), Magunta Srinivasulu Reddy (MP, Ongole), his son Raghav Magunta, and others. The South Group was being represented by Pillai, Abhishek Boinpalli and Butchi Babu, the federal agency investigation has revealed.

Pillai along with his associates was coordinating with various persons to execute the political understanding between the South Group and a leader of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Pillai has been an accomplice and was involved in the kickbacks from the South Group and the recoupment of the same from the businesses in Delhi, ED investigation reveals.

The ED had earlier said that the South Group gave kickbacks of Rs 100 crore to AAP leaders.

Pillai is learnt to be a partner of 32.5 per cent in Indo Spirits, which had got an L1 licence. Indo Spirits is a partnership firm of Arun Pillai (32.5 per cent), Prem Rahul (32.5 per cent) and Indospirit Distribution Limited (35 per cent), wherein Arun Pillai and Prem Rahul represented the benami investments of Kavitha and Magunta Srinivasulu Reddy and his son Raghava Magunta.

Kavitha, who is a member of the Telangana Legislative Council, was questioned by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the same case in December last year.

The excise policy was passed in Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi Cabinet in the middle of the deadly Delta Covid-19 pandemic in 2021.

The Delhi government’s version is that the policy was formulated to ensure the generation of optimum revenue, eradicate the sale of spurious liquor or non-duty paid liquor in Delhi, besides improving user experience.

The CBI had filed a case against alleged corruption in the 2021-22 excise policy. The excise policy was subsequently withdrawn by the AAP government.

Sisodia was among 15 others booked in an FIR filed by the CBI. Excise officials, liquor company executives, dealers, some unknown public servants and private persons were booked in the case.

It was alleged that irregularities were committed including modifications in the Excise Policy and undue favours were extended to the license holders including waiver or reduction in licence fee, an extension of L-1 license without approval etc. (

  • TN CM Stalin reaches out to migrant workers

TN CM Stalin reaches out to migrant workers

    [ad_1]

Tirunelveli: Reaching out to the migrant workers community in Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister M K Stalin on Tuesday interacted with a group of labourers at a latex unit here.

The Chief Minister’s move comes in the wake of apprehensions among the migrant workforce over alleged fake videos of attacks on some of them in the state, which had even prompted the Bihar government to depute an official delegation to take stock of the situation.

Stalin visited Kanam Latex, involved in making hand gloves, in the district and interacted with the migrant workers, enquiring about their well-being, an official release said.

He discussed with them matters like how long they were staying in Tamil Nadu, if the local people treated them well and whether they had to face any issues.

The workers told him they had a good work atmosphere, some were staying for more than five years in TN, many with their families and that the local people were treating them with brotherhood, the release added.

The workers told him they did not have any fears and that they felt safe like staying in their native places, while acknowledging the help extended by the state government, it said.

“The CM asked them not to fall for rumours and that the state government was providing workers from all states a safe work environment,” the release said.

In connection with circulation of a video clip, the content being a rumour that migrant workers were attacked in Tamil Nadu, a construction worker –native of Jharkhand– was arrested near Chennai by police.

Tamil Nadu has a sizeable number of migrant worker population, with many from states like Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal among others being employed in various sectors including construction.

Meanwhile, the four-member Bihar government delegation met officials and workers in Chennai and expressed satisfaction over the state government’s actions after the alleged fake videos emerged. It had earlier travelled to Tirupur and Coimbatore, both of which employ a large number of migrant labourers.

D Balamurugan, Bihar Rural Development Secretary, told reporters here the TN government acted after the videos started circulating.

“There were some apprehensions after the videos emerged but now things have been clarified,” he added. In Chennai, the official Bihar team met Chief Secretary V Irai Anbu as well.

In Patna, senior DMK leader and Lok Sabha member, T R Baalu called on Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and handed over a letter sent by Stalin on the steps taken by the government to protect migrant workers from States including Bihar.

DMK’s Deputy General Secretary A Raja hit out at Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) chief Chirag Paswan and said that the LJP leader may do his politics of being “BJP’s B-Team”, in Bihar and not in Tamil Nadu.

DMK chief Stalin’s Dravidian model of social justice-led inclusive growth would help set up a regime of secular and progressive forces at the Centre following Lok Sabha polls next year, Raja said in a statement.

Paswan was in Chennai on March 6 and he had called on Governor R N Ravi and submitted a memorandum on the issue while demanding a thorough probe on allegations of attack on Bihar workers.

  • Kejriwal, Mann to address AAP workers in Raipur on Sunday

Kejriwal, Mann to address AAP workers in Raipur on Sunday

    [ad_1]

Raipur: Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party national convener Arvind Kejriwal will be on a one-day visit to Chhattisgarh capital Raipur on Sunday to boost AAP’s preparations for the assembly elections in the state scheduled later this year, a party leader said.

Kejriwal will be accompanied by Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann and the duo will address a party workers’ convention here.

The AAP had tried its luck for the first time in Chhattisgarh assembly polls in 2018 and fielded candidates in 85 of 90 seats but failed to achieve success. However, a landslide win in Punjab last year turbocharged its national ambitions.

Even though it won in just five constituencies despite running a high-decibel campaign in Gujarat, where the Bharatiya Janata Party won a record 156 seats, the party garnered about 13 per cent vote share. On Saturday, AAP also announced its plans to contest all 230 seats in Madhya Pradesh, which too goes to polls this year.

The visit of the AAP top leadership and their interaction with party workers will further strengthen the preparations for the assembly elections in Chhattisgarh, Delhi minister and the party’s state election in-charge Gopal Rai told reporters here.

The two leaders will address the party workers’ convention in Jora ground in front of the Agriculture university around 3 pm on Sunday, he said.

Rai accused the Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party that have governed the state since it was carved out of Madhya Pradesh in 2000. The present Bhupesh Baghel-led Congress government has completely failed on the law and order front, he claimed.

Highlighting several schemes of the Kejriwal government in New Delhi in just few years of its rule, Rai demanded to know why Chhattisgarh has failed to register such achievements in so many years.

He said the BJP and Congress have been seeking votes through false promises and populist announcements.
