Nabi won the second prize in the “Outstanding Contribution to Peace” category, and the Fetisov Journalism Awards praised her reporting for providing a “comprehensive and impressively detailed picture” of the issue.

According to a press release from the awards, Nabi’s story “highlights what is not known, shows the human consequences of neglect, and most emphatically gives voice to the people totally disregarded by their own authorities and whose ordeal is largely invisible to international audiences.”

The Fetisov Journalism Awards have four categories in total, and each winner in the three categories shares a cash prize of 130,000 Swiss francs (Rs 11, 94,371).

Nabi’s award-winning reporting brings attention to an often-overlooked issue and highlights the struggles faced by “half-widows” in Kashmir, whose stories are often ignored.

Alia made her grand debut at the Met Gala 2023 last week only. For her debut, Alia opted for a pristine white gown with a billowing silhouette from the shelves of Prabal Gurung.

“Met Gala — Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty…I have always been fascinated by the iconic Chanel brides. Season after season, the genius of Karl Lagerfeld shone through in the most innovative and awe-inspiring couture. My look tonight was inspired from this and in particular by supermodel Claudia Schiffer’s 1992 Chanel bridal look.. I wanted to do something that felt authentic (hello, pearls!) and proudly made in India. The embroidery, made with a 100,000 pearls is a labour of love by @prabalgurung. I’m so proud to wear you for my first Met,” she shared the details of the dress.

“A girl can never have too many pearls… and the right accessories to complement the look which in our case translated to the bow of pearls on my hair. Oh, and it’s white, for my Choup-ED,” Alia added.

On the work front, she will rekindle her on-screen romance with Ranveer Singh in Karan Johar’s directorial ‘Rocky Aur Rani ki Prem Kahani.’

  • India’s Bindyarani Devi wins silver at Asian Championships

India’s Bindyarani Devi wins silver at Asian Championships

    [ad_1]

Jinju: Indian weightlifter Bindyarani Devi was quick to make amends after an underwhelming performance in snatch section as she clinched an overall silver in the women’s 55kg competition at the Asian Championships here on Saturday.

The Commonwealth Games silver medallist had a total effort of 194kg (83kg+111kg), as she opened India’s medal tally in this edition of the championship.

Bindyarani also won the silver in the clean and jerk section. She was, however, competing in a non-Olympic weight category.

    MS Education Academy

“I’m happy with my performance today. I had injured my left knee before the trials. Once that was okay I had issues with my right one so my training was affected and I couldn’t give my best,” she told PTI.

“But today thanks to god my body was feeling good before the competition,” she added.

The Manipuri, who hasn’t been able to speak to her family back home due to the ongoing ethnic violence in the state, had two failed lifts — one each in snatch, and clean jerk. But a gold medal would have been out of her grasp even if she had completed those two lifts.

Chen Guan Ling of Chinese Taipei won the gold with a 204kg (90kg+114kg) effort while Vietnam’s Vo Thi Quynh Nhu 192kg (88kg+104kg) bagged the bronze in a depleted field.

The top lifters in 55kg have either bulked up or moved down weight classes in order to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics next year.

Bindyarani started off nicely, executing her first two snatch attempts of 80kg and 83kg with relative ease but her 85kg try was deemed a no lift. Her personal best in snatch is 86kg.

Placed fourth after the snatch event, the Manipuri covered ground by lifting the second highest weight in clean and jerk.

She, then, unsuccessfully, tried to improve her total with a 115kg lift. She had lifted 116kg at the Birmingham CWG last year.

The Manipuri was forced to switch back to her original 55kg weight division for this event due to an injury she sustained ahead of the selection trials.

She had moved to the 59kg weight class, that features in the Paris Olympics, during last year’s World Championships where she finished 25th.

Her performance here was not her best but head coach Vijay Sharma had said before the tournament that the aim was to make Bindyarani just participate in the event, which is one of the qualifiers of the Paris Olympics, and peak during the Asian Games later this year.

“Before the injury, I had improved my personal best but the injury affected my training and we wanted to take it easy. At the Asian Games, I will win gold for sure,” Bindyarani said.

Under the 2024 Olympic qualification rule, a lifter has to compulsorily compete in the 2023 World Championships and the 2024 World Cup.

Apart from the two above, a lifter also has to participate in three among the following additional events — the 2022 World Championships, the 2023 Continental Championships, the 2023 Grand Prix 1, the 2023 Grand Prix II and the 2024 Continental Championships.

Having competed here and in last year’s World Championships, both Mirabai Chanu and Bindyarani now need to take part in one other additional event, apart from the two compulsory ones.

The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) will publish the Olympic Qualification Rating (OQR) of each weight category at the end of the qualification period.

A weightlifter’s best three performances at the qualifying events will be taken into account for final assessment.

  • BJP does not enjoy public support, it wins elections by rigging EVMs: Sanjay Raut

BJP does not enjoy public support, it wins elections by rigging EVMs: Sanjay Raut

    [ad_1]

Belagavi: Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut on Wednesday alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) does not enjoy the support of people and it wins elections by rigging the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).

Addressing a poll rally here to campaign for Murlidhar Patil, a Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti (MES) candidate from Khanapur, Raut also accused the BJP of being a “Maharashtra hater” and said whenever the Marathi manoos gets stronger, it hatches a conspiracy – be it against Maharashtra or Marathi-speaking border areas of Karnataka.

He also asked people not to entertain the BJP, the Congress and the Shiv Sena led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde when the leaders from these parties from Maharashtra come for campaigning.

    MS Education Academy

While the Congress is the principal opposition party seeking to dislodge the BJP government in Karnataka, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has fielded candidates for the Assembly polls in the state.

“Guard the EVMs. BJP wins with the help of EVMs. You vote for the stool (MES candidate’s symbol) in the morning and in the evening it gets changed to something else. This has to be taken care of. They (the BJP) don’t have people’s support and win by indulging in scams. This is the picture everywhere in the country,” he said.

He said be it Uddhav Thackeray or NCP president Sharad Pawar, they always had affection towards the Ekikaran Samiti and the Marathi manoos in Marathi-speaking areas of Karnataka.

The MES is a body fighting for the rights of the Marathi-speaking areas in Belagavi-Karwar areas of Karnataka, where Assembly elections will be held on May 10.

Truth always wins: Sooraj Pancholi on Instagram after being acquitted

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: After being acquitted of abetment charges in Jia Khan’s suicide case, actor Sooraj Pancholi took to Instagram to post “The Truth Always Wins!” The actor posted this note with folded hands and heart emoji. He wrote in hashtags# GodisGreat.

    ANI 20230428093657

Almost 10 years after actress Jiah Khan’s death by suicide, a special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court in Mumbai on Friday acquitted actor Sooraj Pancholi of abetment charges.

“Due to paucity of evidence, this court can’t hold you (Sooraj Pancholi) guilty, hence acquitted,” Special CBI court judge Judge AS Sayyed said while pronouncing the verdict.

    MS Education Academy

Jiah Khan was found dead in her suburban home on June 3, 2013.

Based on a letter seized on June 10, which was purportedly written by the 25-year-old Jiah, Mumbai Police booked Suraj Pancholi under section 306 (abetment to suicide) and arrested him.

Sooraj, son of actors Aditya Pancholi and Zarina Wahab, was allegedly in a relationship with Jiah.

Jiah’s mother Rabia Khan alleged that her daughter was murdered.

In October 2013, Rabia moved to the Bombay High Court seeking a CBI probe in the case while alleging that her daughter had been murdered.

On the order of the Bombay High Court, the CBI took over the probe from the Maharashtra Police in July 2014.

Rabia claimed that her daughter was in an abusive relationship with Sooraj Pancholi.

Sooraj and Jiah started dating in September 2012.

  • Eva Green wins high court battle over collapse of sci-fi film

Eva Green wins high court battle over collapse of sci-fi film

    [ad_1]

Eva Green has hailed her victory over what she described as a group of men who tried to use her as a scapegoat, after winning a bruising legal battle over the collapse of a sci-fi film.

The actor had sued White Lantern Films and SMC Speciality finance for a $1m (£802,000) fee that she said she was owed. However, she faced a counter-claim alleging she pulled out of the making of A Patriot, which collapsed in 2019, and breached her contract.

In a judgment on Friday, Mr Justice Michael Green ruled in her favour, saying she was entitled to the fee and dismissed the counter-claim.

Her victory follows a case in which Green gave evidence, saying it was “humiliating” that private Whatsapp messages she had sent were revealed in court.

Those messages included her comments about being “obliged to take [the producer’s] shitty peasant crew members from Hampshire” after the location was switched from Ireland. They also included her description of the production as a “B-shitty-movie” and the executive producer, Jake Seal, as “pure vomit”, a “devious sociopath” and “evil”.

Reacting to the judgment, Green said she had been “forced to stand up to a small group of men, funded by deep financial resources, who tried to use me as a scapegoat to cover up their own mistakes”.

“I am proud that I stood up against their bullyboy tactics,” she added.

“A few people in the press were only too delighted to reprint these lies without proper reporting. There are few things the media enjoys more than tearing a woman to pieces. It felt like being set upon by hounds; I found myself misrepresented, quoted out of context, and my desire to make the best possible film was made to look like female hysteria. It was cruel and it was untrue.”

During her evidence, Green denied the allegations that she was not prepared to go ahead with the project, saying: “In the 20 years that I have been making films, I have never broken a contract or even missed one day of shooting.”

In the 71-page judgment, released by email, Mr Justice Green concluded: “In particular, I find that Ms Green did not renounce her obligations under the artist agreement; nor did she commit any repudiatory breaches of it.”

He described Green as “in some senses a frustrating and unsatisfactory witness”, adding: “But for such a perfectionist in her art, she was surprisingly underprepared for her evidence.

“I understand the torment it must have been for her to have all her private texts and WhatsApp messages revealed in open court and scrutinised for what they disclosed about her true state of mind and intentions in relation to the film. She said it was ‘humiliating’ but some of her explanations for the language she used and the feelings she expressed – such as they were down to her ‘Frenchness’ – were not credible or adequate.”

    skip past newsletter promotion

Nevertheless, the judge said he believed allowances needed to be made for “the heightened emotions that were clearly present” when some of the messages were written and as these were assumed to be personal correspondence between friends.

While he added that he had to be cautious about accepting her spin on her words, the broad thrust of her evidence was “credible and fitted with her general commitment to the film”.

“I take account of her evident emotional and forthright personality in explaining her more extreme comments about Mr Seal, whom she clearly detested even though she only met him once,” he said.

The film company has been approached for comment.
