Hyderabad: Rs 25 crore announced for Hare Krishna Heritage Tower works

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Telangana chief minister K Chandrashekhar Rao on Monday announced Rs 25 crore for the construction of Hare Krishna Heritage Tower in the city.

The Hare Krishna Movement (HKM) organized Bhumi Puja ceremony for the monument, which is 400 feet (120 meters) tall and is meant to be major religious and cultural landmark in Hyderabad.

Taken up at a cost of Rs 200 crore, the tower consists of temples that have a linkage through various religions and will likely be completed by 2028.

    MS Education Academy

    About the Tower

The Tower will be constructed on a sprawling six-acre campus at Goshpada Kshetra (land sanctified by cows) in Narsingi. The deities’ of Radha and Krishna along with the eight gopis known as Asthasakhis, will be installed in the grand temple hall.

A traditional stone-carved temple with a large prakara dedicated to Sri Srinivasa Govinda, inspired by the world-renowned Sri Venkateshwara Swamy shrine in Tirumala will be there in the Tower that will draw architectural elements from Kakatiya, Chalukya, Dravidian and other ancient styles.

The campus will have features like a library, museum, and multi-vision theatre for the spiritual and cultural education of children, youth, and families.

Various attractions integrated with the latest technologies, such as hologram and laser projection, will create engaging and immersive experiences for visitors and present our rich culture and heritage in a captivating manner, a grand vaidika samkara hall and pilgrim guest rooms have also been built that can be utilized for large gatherings.

Speaking after laying the foundation for the Hare Krishna Movement’s Heritage Tower at Narsingi, KCR said that the state government would extend all support to organizations, which follow peaceful, devotional practices.

“I am really proud to be here among all of you to share joyous moments. A very very devotional beautiful temple will come up very shortly in Hyderabad,” said KCR.

Recalling that the Telangana government has built the Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple at Yadadri in a very decent way and was being appreciated by one and all, KCR said that the Anjaneya Swamy Temple at Kondagattu and Vemulawada and Kaleshwaram temples are also under construction.

Stating that the Hare Krishna Heritage Tower should serve society in both devotional and social ways, KCR said, “If you want to have peace, it can be derived from prayers at temples and other religious structures.”

“Religious ignorance among people creates trouble for humans. No religion promotes hatred but religious ignorance takes people into a trance and forces them to perform inhuman activities,” added KCR.

“Right from school children to IT employees, many were relishing hot, hygienic, and nutritious food through Annapurna Centres. Not a single complaint has been lodged to date. After relishing the food, students and even high-income group people were appreciating the state government and Akshaya Patra Foundation,” added KCR.

  • Plans approved for Britain’s first women’s-only tower block

Plans approved for Britain’s first women’s-only tower block

    [ad_1]

Planners have approved designs for what is believed to be Britain’s first women’s-only tower block.

The scheme for 102 flats to be rented to single women is to be built in west London by a housing association founded in 1920 as part of the suffragette movement.

Each home will have a deep balcony and will be designed specifically for women. Details could include slightly lower kitchen work surfaces and careful attention to ventilation to ensure comfort for menopausal women, said Women’s Pioneer Housing (WPH), the landlord.

The 15-storey tower in Ealing will offer homes for low social rents to women who face inequality, abuse and disadvantages in the housing market. Tenants are likely to include victims of domestic abuse and black and minority ethnic women who face a significant pay gap, making housing less affordable.

The person taking the tenancy must be a single woman, and men will only be able to live in the tower block if they become a tenant’s partner. The only way a tenant could be male is if they are the adult child of a female tenant and inherit the tenancy. Transgender women, including people intending to undergo gender reassignment, will be allowed, but men who cross-dress, transgender men, and anyone with a known history of male violence against women or children will not.

Artist's impression of the women's-only tower in Ealing
Men will only be able to live in the tower block if they become a tenant’s partner. Photograph: GRID Architects

“The benefit is security,” said one woman who has lived in a current WPH property on the site since she was a previously homeless student 20 years ago. “We’re not dealing with different types of people moving up and down [the stairs] all the time. I feel comfortable because I am around women only.”

But the project is proving controversial with some of the current tenants who face years living elsewhere before returning to the tower or not being practically able to come back because their households are now too large. Several legal cases are under way arising from disputes over rehousing, residents have said.

A woman who has lived in the complex for 40 years after a private landlord threatened her with rape said: “The benefit for me is there is more safety.” But she said she feared a high-rise could bring with it social problems seen in other tower blocks.

The scheme also attracted opposition from some locals, who argued such a high concentration of women “will put the women at risk” and that “single women would find a high-rise very unpleasant”.

“It’s a very 1950s attitude that if a women goes up three flights of stairs they might faint,” said Colin Veitch, the director of GRID Architects, which has designed the tower. “It’s ridiculous.”

More people supported the scheme saying “we need cheaper housing especially for women” and “affordable housing is good. Nimbys are bad”. One person responding to the planning consultation said: “WPH rescued me from abusive and controlling relationships. Happier and more confident now. Without this housing, women like me face an almost impossible challenge.”

WPH’s latest annual review said: “There is no region in England where a single woman on an average woman’s salary can afford to rent a private-sector home of her own. The gender pay gap builds up over a lifetime and older women are particularly impacted.”

    skip past newsletter promotion

The same landlord is also planning to build another low-rise women’s-only complex in Shepherd’s Bush, in west London. It operates as a cooperative and community benefit society.

The tower design features red brick and reconstituted stone walls, a roof garden and a green roof. Veitch said there were few differences in the design process compared with a mixed block, but there was “more focus on security and a feeling of safety”. Particular attention will be paid to lighting the surrounding areas so residents feel safe at night.

The scheme is being developed in partnership with L&Q, one of London’s largest housing associations.

Tracey Downie, the WPH chief executive, said the block would be home to women who “have been unable to afford good affordable housing themselves because of their level of income or vulnerability”. That may be because they have been sexually harassed by a private landlord, are full-time mothers relying on income from a partner from whom they are now separated, or have been the victim of domestic violence.

She said the idea was to create homes where people could rebuild their lives. “We try to build in desirable locations where people can feel safe – Ealing is a leafy suburb.”

She said the women would benefit from having a shared understanding of security they might not get in mixed blocks where men might leave doors on the latch.

  • Kohinoor to be cast as ‘symbol of conquest’ in new Tower of London display

Kohinoor to be cast as ‘symbol of conquest’ in new Tower of London display

    [ad_1]

London: The controversial colonial-era Kohinoor diamond claimed by India is to be cast as a “symbol of conquest” as part of a new display of Britain’s Crown Jewels at the Tower of London set to open to the public in May.

Historic Royal Palaces (HRP), the charity that manages Britain’s palaces, said this week that the new Jewel House exhibition will explore the history of the Kohinoor – also known as Koh-i-Noor – through a combination of objects and visual projections.

The infamous diamond, which is set within the Crown of the mother of the late Queen Elizabeth II, remains within the Tower after Camilla – in a diplomatic move – chose not to use this traditional crown for her coronation with King Charles II on May 6.

“The history of the Koh-i-Noor, which is set within the Crown of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, will be explored,” HRP said, with reference to the new planned display.

“A combination of objects and visual projections will explain the stone’s story as a symbol of conquest, with many previous owners, including Mughal Emperors, Shahs of Iran, Emirs of Afghanistan, and Sikh Maharajas,” it said.

Kohinoor, which means mountain of light in Persian, came into Queen Victoria’s possession from the treasury of Maharaja Ranjit Singh a few years before she was to be crowned empress of India and has played a starring role in British coronations of the past.

It will now take centre-stage at the new post-Coronation exhibition at the Tower of London.

“We look forward to expanding the stories we are telling about the Crown Jewels, and to showcasing this remarkable collection for millions of visitors from around the world to enjoy,” said Andrew Jackson, Resident Governor of the Tower of London and Keeper of the Jewel House.

“We are delighted to unveil our brand-new Jewel House display from May 26, offering visitors a richer understanding of this magnificent collection. As the home of the Crown Jewels, we are delighted that the Tower of London will continue to play its part during this historic Coronation year,” he said.

The new exhibition will open just weeks after the Coronation of King Charles and Queen Camilla, who will be crowned with the Queen Mary Crown. It marks the first major change to the Jewel House at the Tower of London for over a decade, which has been home to Britain’s Crown Jewels for nearly 400 years.

“The Crown Jewels are the most powerful symbols of the British monarchy and hold deep religious, historic, and cultural significance. From their fascinating origins to their use during the Coronation ceremony, the new Jewel House transformation will present the rich history of this magnificent collection with more depth and detail than ever before,” said Charles Farris, Public Historian for the History of the Monarchy at HRP.

Among some of the other changes, the story of the famous Cullinan diamond will also feature, with the hammer and knife used to make the first cuts to the huge diamond going on display in the Jewel House for the first time.

Discovered in South Africa in 1905, the diamond is the largest gem-quality uncut diamond ever found at 3,106 carats. It was split into nine major stones and 96 smaller brilliants, with the largest two stones featuring in the British Sovereign’s Sceptre with Cross and the Imperial State Crown.

At the heart of the new display will be a room dedicated to the spectacle, pageantry and community of the Coronation Procession.

The display will present Coronation Processions throughout history, celebrating the contributions of the many people who take part in these unique events.

On display will be a series of objects from the Royal Ceremonial Dress Collection, including an exquisite court suit worn at the Coronation of George IV and a herald’s tabard which would have been worn during royal processions.

The display will culminate in the Treasury, the vault that protects most of the Crown Jewels collection, comprising over 100 objects in total. Among the spectacular items on display in the Treasury is St Edward’s Crown of 1661, which is used at the moment of crowning and is the most important and sacred crown within the collection.

The Sovereign’s Sceptre with Cross and the Sovereign’s Orb, which are presented to the monarch during the moment of investiture, are also on display in the Treasury.

New lighting will allow visitors to experience the world-famous collection like never before, HRP claimed of the re-presentation which is the culmination of a major four-year project.

‘Like knocking down the Eiffel tower’: battle to save historic Prague bridge

    [ad_1]

A historic Prague railway bridge, whose importance to the city’s landscape has been compared to the Eiffel tower in Paris, has been earmarked for demolition in a move denounced by architects and preservationists.

The much-photographed Vyšehrad bridge – instantly recognisable for its parabolic lattice steel structure – is unfit to carry an anticipated rising volume of rail traffic, claims Czech Railways, which plans to replace it with a modern structure.

    Prague railway

The proposal has triggered an emotive backlash from local campaigners and Prague city council, who want the original, which has earned national monument status, to be preserved. A petition pleading for the 120-year-old structure to be saved attracted more than 6,000 signatures after the railways administration published plans for a replacement.

The outcry has prompted the Czech transport minister, Martin Kupka, to call a special meeting of bridge engineers and the railways administration in an effort to find a solution.

Designed by František Prášil, a Czech engineer of the late Habsburg era, the bridge was built in 1901 and spans the Vltava river, carrying mainline trains between Prague and other European cities, including Munich. It lies within an area designated a Unesco world heritage site in 1992, and has become a favourite landmark among walkers and cyclists, who use two pedestrian walkways on either side of the bridge.

But the railways administration insists that corrosion means that repairing and maintaining it as a busy transport artery is too complicated and expensive, amid proposals to add an extra line to the existing two tracks and build a new local railway station nearby.

Critics counter that its dilapidated state is a result of the administration’s failure to prioritise repairs since the bridge was granted national monument status in 2004.

A competition among Czech architects to design a replacement resulted in a more modern blueprint, loosely based on the existing bridge, being chosen last November.

    Vyšehrad bridge
‘The people of Prague cannot imagine the city without the bridge,’ said Prague’s deputy mayor, Adam Scheinher. Photograph: Marketa Novakova/Alamy

But claims that the bridge is beyond repair have been contradicted. Feasibility studies commissioned by Prague city council concluded that preservation was “technically feasible” and that the structure had “sufficient structural capacity to carry future train traffic, including higher trainloads and higher train frequencies”.

Adam Scheinherr, Prague’s deputy mayor responsible for the city’s transport infrastructure and cultural landmarks, said: “What’s most important about the bridge is that it belongs to the panorama of Prague, and the people of Prague cannot imagine the city without it. When you see movies set in Prague, the railway bridge is nearly always there.”

Richard Biegel, chairman of the Club for Old Prague preservation group and an architectural historian at the city’s Charles university, said the railway administration’s plans betrayed “a lack of empathy”.

“It’s part of something that’s emblematic for Prague,” he said. “The importance of the bridge for Prague is like that of the Eiffel tower for Paris. It’s also important as a marker of the period of the industrial revolution in the city.”

Jan Nevola, spokesperson for the railways administration, said a new bridge was needed because renovating the existing one was “unrealistic”.

“Its condition is so bad that it would essentially be a replica made up of more than 60% new parts,” he said. “At the same time, this approach is much more costly, will not allow an increase in traffic and would only extend the lifetime by several decades.”

Ian Firth, a leading structural engineer who specialises in bridge design, co-authored a 2021 report recommending retaining the structure either as a pedestrian or one-track rail facility, while possibly moving it 50 metres to stand alongside a new, unobtrusive rail bridge.

“They weren’t interested. Their minds were already made up,” Firth said. “But to chuck away the existing bridge is a terrible shame because it’s a marvellous piece of work. Imagine the outcry around the world if Tower Bridge in London was declared unfit for purpose and the powers that be decided to demolish it and build something else. This is the same scenario.

“We are in the middle of a climate emergency, and we have a responsibility not to just throw things away and start building new things, which is environmentally wasteful.”
