Hospitals in Hyderabad witness surge in patients with moonlighting-related ailments

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Hospitals in Hyderabad have reported a surge in patients with brain and heart-related ailments caused by moonlighting. Moonlighting, a practice of working for a business of the same niche while being a permanent employee of another, has gained momentum due to remote working and reduced job security since the Covid pandemic. Although there is a debate on whether moonlighting is ethical, its side effects have not been discussed much.

Doctors from Hyderabad, who have treated many patients who suffered brain and heart-related ailments due to moonlighting, have a word of caution.

Tech professionals work for more than one company

Hyderabad, a key IT and ITes destination in the country, is home to millions of technology professionals. There would be thousands of professionals who might be working for more than one company, and this trend would have only multiplied since the start of 2020 when the Covid-19 pandemic struck, and work from home became the new normal. However, hospitals in Hyderabad have now started receiving more and more patients with complaints and ailments which are believed to be the side-effects of moonlighting.

    MS Education Academy

“We are a rehabilitation facility where we help patients who have suffered a brain stroke or heart attack or underwent some surgical procedure to recover. Over the past six months, we have received patients from various hospitals in the city who needed recovery after suffering a brain stroke or heart attack,” said Vijay Bathina, Director and Chief of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, at Uchchvas Transitionalcare.

“The most common factor is that they were all IT professionals, they all were doing more than one job, they all worked for more than 60 hours a week, and were working late into the night. These three common factors indicate that moonlighting, which is a growing phenomenon among the new generation professionals, has started impacting their health.”

Bathina explained that working for more than 60 hours a week will have an adverse impact on the health of a person.

“It is important that professionals understand the fact that every individual has limitations to his/her physical ability. Adding more work hours will result in sleep deprivation, which will result in mental health complications like increased stress and decrease in cognitive performance. Hence, it is very important that professionals understand how much physical and mental strain they can take. Else, the body could give up suddenly, causing severe health complications,” he added.

Doctors at various hospitals in Hyderabad are against moonlighting

Highlighting certain key reasons, Manoj Vasireddy, neurologist at Amor Hospitals, said, “When a human body is put under stress, it releases cortisol and adrenaline hormones, which further lead to anxiety and depression. And these two are the major causes for mental health disorders. Sustained anxiety or depression is likely to cause high blood pressure which will have a direct impact on the heart.

“It is very important that IT professionals who sit in front of a computer for long hours know how to balance their life with work. The more an individual works, the more she/he needs rest to recover and rejuvenate from day to day stress. Professionals working for long hours must also do some exercise to stay both physically and mentally fit.”

Shivaram Rao Komandla, consultant neurophysician, Yashoda Hospitals in Hyderabad, said, “Working for long hours or engaging in physically or mentally demanding work can lead to chronic stress, which can contribute to a range of health issues, including neurological problems. Chronic stress has been linked to changes in the brain that can increase the risk of developing anxiety, depression, and other mental health disorders.

“It can also cause physical changes in the brain, such as reduced volume in the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for decision-making, planning, and impulse control. Also, chronic stress can contribute to the development of hypertension, which is a major risk factor for stroke. It’s important to prioritise self-care and manage stress when doing multiple jobs. This can include taking breaks, getting enough sleep, eating a healthy diet, and engaging in stress-reducing activities such as exercise or meditation.”

COVID-19 surge: Centre asks states to stay alert, identify hotspots

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Amid rising cases of coronavirus, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Friday held a review meeting and advised states to stay alert and be prepared for COVID-19 management.

In the meeting with state health ministers and principal and additional chief secretaries held virtually, Mandaviya stressed on identifying emergency hotspots by monitoring trends of influenza-like illness (ILI) and severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) cases, ramping up testing and vaccination and ensuring readiness of hospital infrastructure.

Along with enhancing genome sequencing and ramping up whole genome sequencing of positive samples, he also emphasised on creating awareness about following Covid-appropriate behaviour.

    MS Education Academy

The Centre and the states need to continue working in collaborative spirit as was done during the previous surges for COVID-19 prevention and management, Mandaviya said.

He also urged the state health ministers to conduct mock drills of all hospital infrastructure on April 10 and 11 and review the health preparedness with district administrations and health officials on April 8 and 9.

States and Union territories were further informed that currently WHO is closely tracking one variant of interest (VOI), XBB.1.5 and six other variants are under monitoring (BQ.1, BA.2.75, CH.1.1, XBB, XBF and XBB.1.16), a health ministry statement said.

It was highlighted that while Omicron and its sub-lineages continue to be the predominant variant, most of the assigned variants have little or no significant transmissibility, disease severity or immune escape. The prevalence of XBB.1.16 increased from 21.6 per cent in February to 35.8 per cent in March, 2023.

However, no evidence of an increase in hospitalisation or mortality has been reported, the statement said.

During the meeting, it was observed that 23 states and Union territories had average tests per million below the national average, according to a health ministry statement.

Mandaviya said irrespective of the new variants, the five-fold strategy of ‘Test-Track-Treat-Vaccinate and adherence to Covid-appropriate behaviour’ continue to remain the tested strategy for Covid management.

This would facilitate undertaking of appropriate public health measures, he said.

States and Union territories were also requested to expeditiously increase the rate of testing from the current rate of 100 tests per million, as on the week ending April 7. They were further advised to increase the share of RT-PCR in tests, the statement said.

The states and Union territories were briefed that the country has been witnessing a steady increase in COVID-19 cases with average daily cases rising to 4,188 in the week ending April 7 from 571 in the week ending March 17; and weekly positivity up to 3.02 per cent in the week ending April 7.

However, 88,503 daily average cases have been reported globally in the same time, with the top five countries contributing 62.6 per cent of global cases in the last one week, the statement said.

It was also informed that while India has achieved over 90 per cent coverage of primary vaccination, the coverage of precaution dose is very low.

The Union health minister advised the states and Union territories to ramp up vaccination of all eligible population, especially of the elderly and vulnerable population group.

It was also observed that eight states are reporting high number of Covid cases in India with 10 or more districts reporting more than 10 per cent positivity in Kerala, Maharashtra and Delhi and over 5 districts reporting more than 5 per cent positivity in Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Haryana.

Mandaviya stressed on the importance of enhancing public awareness campaigns regarding adherence to Covid-appropriate behaviour. He requested all the state health ministers to personally monitor and review the preparedness of all logistics and infrastructure including availability of sufficient designated hospital beds and ensure that there is adequate stock of essential medicines.

States were also asked to regularly update their Covid data on the Covid India portal.

They were reminded of the joint advisory issued by the Union health ministry and ICMR to all states on March 25 which calls for a reinvigorated public health response to contain the surge of seasonal influenza and Covid cases through early detection, isolation, testing and timely management of suspected and confirmed cases to detect and contain outbreaks of new SARS-CoV-2 variants.

Mandaviya requested he states and Union territories to ensure effective implementation. There was comprehensive and detailed discussion on various aspects of COVID management including ramping up of hospital infrastructure; increased testing.

Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangaswamy, health ministers of Uttarakhand (Dhan Singh Rawat), Assam (Keshab Mahanta), Goa (Vishwajit Rane), Jharkhand (Banna Gupta), Madhya Pradesh (Prabhuram Choudhury), Punjab (Balbir Singh), Manipur (Sapan Ranjan Singh), Haryana (Anil Vij), Tamil Nadu (Thiru Ma Subramanian) and Telangana (Thanneeru Harish Rao) among others attended the meeting.

Pakistan’s Lahore sees surge in crime rate amid inflation spike

    [ad_1]

Lahore: As Pakistanis are struggling to make the ends meet amid the rise in inflation, Lahore is seeing a massive surge in street crime, reported Dawn.

According to the official data, the crime rate in the first three-and-a-half months of the year shows that over 90 percent of them have been committed at gunpoint. This shows that robbers are fearless and brandish illegal weapons in the city to deprive the citizens of cash and valuables. The criminals are so desperate and fearless of the police action that they are even lifting bicycles too.

The data also revealed that 143 bicycles were stolen from various parts of the provincial capital during the first three-and-a-half months of this year besides 5,366 motorcycles.

    MS Education Academy

Lahore has six police divisions, 35 circles, and 84 police stations. Each division is headed by a superintendent of police (SP) while circles are headed by sub-divisional police officers (SDPOs), reported Dawn.

But despite the appointment of so many police officers in such a large number, the criminals are on the rampage, looting and depriving citizens of their belongings fearlessly. The official data shows that 89 citizens have been allegedly murdered in Lahore in about the first quarter of 2023.

Most of the murder incidents – 20 each – were reported in City and Saddar divisions.

Meanwhile, in Islamabad, provincial’s Interior Minister Abdul Rehman Kanju admitted that the street crime rate has increased in the provincial capital, Dawn reported.

According to a Pakistani newspaper, Kanju claimed that the increase in the population has led to a spike in street crime cases, according to Dawn.

However, he claimed that the government was taking effective steps to ensure the safety of citizens.

The minister made these comments while responding to a calling attention notice, moved by PTI Member of National Assembly (MNA) Asiya Azeem regarding the increase in crimes against women in Islamabad, Dawn reported.

Giving details about the measures that the Pakistan government has taken to control crime, Interior Minister said that Eagle Squad had been formed to patrol streets on motorcycles, claiming that there had been a significant decline in the crime rate since the formation of the squad.

Kanju claimed that since the start of the year, not a single case of house robbery had been reported in the capital, reported Dawn.
Regarding the crimes against women, Kanju claimed that it was because of the government’s directives to the police to register every first information report (FIR) in this regard.

Oil prices surge after OPEC+ announce to cut output

    [ad_1]

Moscow: The Oil prices have surged and surpassed USD 85 per barrel after several oil producer countries announced surprise cuts in production, TASS Agency reported.

According to the Russian News Agency, this is the first time since March 7 that the price of futures contracts of Brent crude oil surged.

The price of futures contracts of Brent crude oil for June 2023 delivery on London’s ICE surpassed USD 85 per barrel.

    MS Education Academy

As of 1:09 am Moscow time on Monday, the price of Brent oil went up by 6.43 per cent to USD 85.03 per barrel, according to TASS Agency.

By 1:12 am (Local Time), Brent was trading at USD 85.41 per barrel (6.46 per cent). The price of futures contracts of WTI crude oil for May 2023 delivery went up by 6.21 per cent, to USD 80.37 per barrel.

Earlier, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) Plus oil producers announced further output cuts of around 1.16 million barrels per day.

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia’s capital and main financial hub said it would cut output by 500,000 barrels per day, or BDP, from May until the end of 2023, state media reported.

In a statement carried out by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), the Saudi official emphasised that this is a precautionary measure aimed at supporting the stability of the oil market, according to Emirates News Agency.

This voluntary cut is in addition to the reduction in production agreed upon during the 33rd OPEC and non-OPEC Ministerial Meeting, held on 5th October 2022.

The move came as a surprise as OPEC Plus said that they did not intend to make any changes in their policies but this announcement blew everyone, The Washington Post reported.

The alliance produced nearly two million barrels below its supply target in February, the last month for which official output figures are available. “We expect shortfalls to continue,” said Ha Nguyen, a global oil analyst for S and P Global Commodity Insights.

There have been persistent reports that Russia is struggling to keep up production without the benefit of Western service companies that have wound down their operations since the Russian invasion of Ukraine more than a year ago.

Saudi production has also been below its production quota set by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries in recent months, reported The Washington Post.

  • Adani’s net worth spikes as AEL stocks surge by over 40 pc in five days

Adani’s net worth spikes as AEL stocks surge by over 40 pc in five days

    [ad_1]

Adani Group stocks, especially Adani Enterprises Limited (AEL) stocks, witnessed a surge in value, resulting in Gautam Adani’s net worth surging by nearly 13%. Adani is now the 26th richest person globally.

Adani Enterprises stocks witnessed the highest surge of over 13 percent and are still trading in the green. This surge in AEL stocks has pushed Adani up in the billionaire list, making him the top winner for the third day in a row.

Adani’s net worth jump as yield-hungry investors rush into Adani stocks

After a recent slump, Adani Group stocks are on the rise again, with all Adani stocks currently trading in the green.

Adani Enterprises Limited (AEL), Adani Green, Adani Power, Adani Transmission, Adani Ports, ACC, Ambuja Cements, NDTV, and Adani Total Gas Limited stocks have seen an uptick.

While Adani Green, Adani Power, Adani Transmission, NDTV and Adani Total Gas are locked in their upper circuits, stocks of Adani Enterprises, Adani Ports, ACC, and Ambuja Cement witnessed a huge rise in their values.

    photo1677829197
Stocks of Adani Group companies at 1 pm today

The positive movement in Adani stocks comes after days of decline, and it has impacted Gautam Adani’s net worth. Investors are currently watching the market closely for further changes in Adani stock values.

Adani Enterprises Limited stocks surge by over 40 pc

Adani Enterprises Limited (AEL) stocks have skyrocketed by over 40 percent in the last five days, reaching Rs 1819 today from Rs 1298 on February 27.

Market experts predict that the AEL stocks may reach Rs 1900 based on technical analysis. However, this is subject to the bulls maintaining support at Rs 1400.

Any further surge in AEL stocks will result in a rise in Gautam Adani’s net worth, as it is one of the crucial companies in the Adani Group.

Reason for jump in Adani group stock prices

As per media reports, United States boutique investment firm GQG Partners has bought shares worth USD 1.87 billion in four Adani group companies.

GQG reportedly took a 3.4 percent stake in Adani Enterprises for around 662 million, 4.1 percent in Adani Ports for USD 640 million, 2.5 percent in Adani Transmission for USD 230 million, and a 3.5 percent stake in Adani Green Energy for USD 340 million

As the decision of GQG marks the first major investment in the Adani group since a short-seller’s critical report resulted in a stock rout, it boosted investors’ confidence in the group thereby leading to jump in the values of Adani stocks.

Israeli, Palestinian officials to meet over surge in violence

    [ad_1]

    israel palestinians 76917

Abbas’ office said the Palestinians would “stress the need to stop all Israeli unilateral actions.” An Israeli official said the meeting was meant to ease tensions ahead of Ramadan and came after an American request.

The meeting’s Palestinian attendees were confirmed by a Palestinian official. A Jordanian official also said the meeting was meant to stop “Israeli unilateral actions,” build confidence and lead to more comprehensive contacts between the sides. He said the meeting will take place in the Red Sea resort town of Aqaba, Jordan.

All three officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to discuss the meeting with the media.

Palestinians who oppose any official engagement with Israel said they would protest the meeting, while the Islamic militant Hamas group, which rules the Gaza Strip criticized the meeting.

It’s not clear what the talks might achieve. Israel has pledged to continue fighting militants in the West Bank where the Palestinian Authority often has little control. Israel also is led by a far-right government with members that oppose concessions to the Palestinians and favor settlement construction on occupied lands sought by the Palestinians for a future state. Last week, Israeli officials advanced over 7,000 new settlement homes in the occupied West Bank, according to activist groups that attended the planning meeting.

Violence between Israelis and Palestinians has surged since Israel stepped up raids on West Bank cities, towns and villages following a spate of Palestinian attacks last spring. The bloodshed has spiked this year, with more than 60 Palestinians killed in the West Bank and east Jerusalem, according to a tally by The Associated Press. Palestinian attacks against Israelis have killed 11 people.

Israel says the raids are meant to dismantle militant networks and thwart future attacks. The Palestinians say the further entrench Israel’s 55-year open-ended occupation of lands they want for a future state, as well as undermine their own security forces.

Ramadan this year coincides with the weeklong Jewish holiday of Passover and worshippers from both faiths are expected to flock to the holy sites in Jerusalem’s Old City, which are often a flashpoint for violence between the sides. Clashes erupted at a key Jerusalem holy site last year and tensions at the site helped spark an 11-day war with Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip in 2021.

  • Ahead of Ramzan, tea crisis looms in Pakistan as prices surge

Ahead of Ramzan, tea crisis looms in Pakistan as prices surge

    [ad_1]

Karachi: Ahead of Ramazan, the price of black tea (loose) in Pakistan has swelled to Rs 1,600 per kg from Rs 1,100 in the last 15 days as around 250 containers are still stuck at the port that arrived from late December 2022 to early January, local media reported.

A retailer said a leading brand has raised the price of 170-gram Danedar and Elaichi packs to Rs320 and Rs350 from Rs 290. The 900 and 420-gram packs now cost Rs 1,480 and Rs 720 as against Rs 1,350 and Rs 550. Other packers are set to follow suit, Dawn reported.

Zeeshan Maqsood, Convener Standing Committee of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) on Tea, said that imports are currently under crisis which may lead to huge shortages in March, Dawn reported.

He said banks say they have instructions from the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) to release documents on 180-day defer contracts or 180-day letters of credit (LCs).

He added that the situation is getting worse because if anyone gets these containers released on 180-day deferred payment then how he would calculate the cost of imported tea as nobody knows what would be the dollar rate after six months on the interbank market, Dawn reported.

Zeeshan, who is also an executive member of the Pakistan Tea Association (PTA), said the banks are not opening LCs saying they do not have any instructions from the SBP for new contracts.

He feared that tea price may hit Rs 2,500 per kg in Ramazan in case stuck-up consignments were not released, Dawn reported.

As a result, the welfare associations may not be able to distribute tea in ration bags due to shortage and high cost, he added.

Zeeshan suggested that Pakistan should sign a Prefrential Trade Agreement (PTA) with Kenya. “We import 90 per cent of Kenyan tea from a weekly auction in Mombasa where all African Origin tea are sold.”

Kenya is the gateway to Africa connecting seven landlocked countries. Pakistan imports tea worth around $500m annually from Kenya and exports only $250m of different items, Dawn reported.

  • Report claims surge in Indians entering UK illegally on boats across English Channel

Report claims surge in Indians entering UK illegally on boats across English Channel

    [ad_1]

London: Indians have allegedly become the third-largest group of migrants entering UK shores illegally across the English Channel on dangerous small boats, according to a UK media report quoting Home Office sources on Friday.

‘The Times’ newspaper reports that Home Office officials believe Indian students are using a loophole in the rules that allows asylum seekers to study in the UK and pay much lower domestic, rather than international fees.

It reports that about 250 Indian migrants have made the dangerous crossing in small boats this year alone, more than 233 who crossed the Channel in the last year – making them the third largest cohort after Afghans and Syrians.

“One theory being pursued is Serbia’s visa-free travel rules for Indians, which Home Office officials believe is providing a gateway into Europe,” the report claims.

“Until the end of last year, all Indian passport holders were able to enter Serbia without a visa for up to 30 days. Home Office officials believe the arrangement, which ended on January 1 as part of Serbia’s efforts to align with EU (European Union) visa policies, led to some Indians travelling onward into the EU and subsequently to the UK in small boats,” it claims.

According to official Home Office statistics published in early November last year for these illegal Channel crossings in the first six months of 2022, over half (51 per cent) of small boat arrivals were from three nationalities – Albanian (18 per cent), Afghan (18 per cent) and Iranian (15 per cent).

Indians have not been among the nationalities referenced in official statistics of this illegal route so far.

“This is very disturbing to hear and is the first the NISAU (National Indian Students and Alumni Union) has heard of such an act,” said Sanam Arora, chair of the Indian student representative organisation in the UK.

“Indian students are law-abiding, meritorious and very hard-working and we are worried that such isolated incidents, if true, can reflect badly on the whole community. Indian students who have studied in the UK are trailblazers who are setting the future of the India-UK relationship. We’d like to understand details of who these immigrants are and what their motivations for entering the UK in this manner are…no student should ever abuse the UK’s visa system,” she said.

While the UK Home Office declined to comment specifically on the media report quoting sources, a government spokesperson told PTI that the UK’s Migration and Mobility Partnership (MMP) with India are aimed at accelerating the removals of any illegal migrants.

“Our migration deal with India aims to enhance and accelerate the removal of Indian nationals with no right to stay in the UK and secure greater cooperation around organised immigration crime,” the spokesperson said.

“The global migration crisis continues to place an unprecedented strain on our asylum system. This is why we are going to introduce legislation which will ensure that people arriving in the UK illegally are detained and removed to another country,” the spokesperson added.

Tackling the problem of illegal small boat crossings across the English Channel is among the top government priorities set by British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

The Home Office said its Small Boats Operational Command (SBOC) will oversee operational activity with neighbouring France to disrupt such crossings, save lives at sea and ensure the effective processing of arrivals in the UK.

Israel sees surge in foreign tourists’ hotel overnight stays

    [ad_1]

Tel Aviv: The number of overnight stays of foreign tourists in hotels across Israel surged 785 per cent year on year in 2022, revealed an annual report issued by the country’s Central Bureau of Statistics.

The nights foreign tourists spent in Israeli hotels totaled 7.1 million last year, up from 2.19 million in 2020 and 802,000 in 2021, Xinhua news agency quoted the report as saying.

However, the number of overnight stays last year was still significantly lower than the 12.13 million tourist stays registered in 2019, before the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Since the beginning of 2022, Israel has gradually lifted entry restrictions on foreigners, thus increasing the monthly number of foreign tourist stays from 76,000 in January to 910,000 in November and 643,000 in December.

Overnight stays of Israelis in hotels in the country reached an all-time high of 15.93 million in 2022, breaking the previous record of 13.69 million registered in 2019.
