New Zealand to provide further humanitarian support for Turkey, Syria

    [ad_1]

Wellington: New Zealand will provide further humanitarian support for Turkey and Syria where devastating earthquakes earlier this month killed more than 57,300 people, Foreign Minister Nanaia Mahuta said on Tuesday.

“The earthquakes on February 6 have had devastating consequences, with almost 18 million people affected. More than 53,000 people have died and tens of thousands more have been injured,” she said.

This represents the third tranche of humanitarian funding provided by the New Zealand government, totaling NZ$4 million ($2 millio) in order to support those in urgent need in the two heavily hit countries, Xinhua news agency quoted the Minister as saying.

The sum includes NZ$1.4 million to the UN Population Fund to deliver essential healthcare services for expectant and new mothers, and protection services for vulnerable women and girls in Turkey, she said.

New Zealand is also contributing NZ$2.1 million for Unicef’s operations in Syria to provide education, water and sanitation, medical care and protection services for children and their families, said the Foreign Minister.

A total of NZ$500,000 in funding will also be made available to accredited New Zealand non-governmental organisations working with their local partners in Turkey to deliver essential relief, she said.

The funding was pledged at an International Donors’ Conference in support of the two quake-hit nations in Brussels on Monday, hosted by the European Commission, the government of Sweden and Turkish authorities.

Tuesday’s announcement brings New Zealand’s total humanitarian funding for the response to NZ$8.5 million.

  • Eric Adams support for Cardi B performance puts him at odds with his police commissioner

Eric Adams support for Cardi B performance puts him at odds with his police commissioner

    [ad_1]

On Friday, however, Adams praised the idea, putting him in agreement with Holmes and at odds with Sewell.

“There are those who critique: Why would you bring Cardi B because she was arrested?” Adams said. “The same reason why you brought Cardi B is why people voted for me, because I was arrested. You don’t discard people.”

Holmes had also butted heads with Sewell after nixing a timed fitness requirement for recruits, according to a report in the New York Post. While Sewell first shot down the idea, Holmes later went directly to Adams and got the change approved.

On Friday, the mayor praised Holmes’ 35 years in the NYPD and said she was the right person to lead the probation department, in part because of her forgiving nature.

“This is the best fit: someone that understands that you don’t throw people away,” the mayor said. “And I think it’s reflected with what she did with Cardi B.”

Holmes’ departure is part of a broader shakeup in the department. Multiple chiefs have left this year as the NYPD settles under the new leadership of Sewell and Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Philip Banks, an Adams confidant who also exerts influence over the department.

  • A Vulnerable Trump, With Real Support for DeSantis in New Grassroots Survey

A Vulnerable Trump, With Real Support for DeSantis in New Grassroots Survey

    [ad_1]

It’s still early in the campaign, and many respondents are not yet committed to a presidential candidate. But the survey results are a potentially ominous sign for Trump as he seeks to claw his way back to the White House in the face of resistance from key party actors.

County chairs are a group whose opinions are worth gauging. County chairs are far more politically attentive and committed to their party than average American voters; they’re going to show up at the polls on primary day. They’re both activists and prominent local figures in the party, who are likely to help influence how others view the 2024 contenders. At the same time, county chairs are a bit removed from the top levels of leadership — they’re not party elites at the national or even state level. They’re still part of the grassroots. County chairs are the kind of people that successful candidates want on their side during the “invisible primary,” when fundraising and endorsements and polling start to matter.

A note about methodology. In my capacity as director of the Center on American Politics at the University of Denver, I sent this survey out to nearly 3,000 Republican Party chairs — for every county in the country — and ultimately 187 responded. It’s fewer than I would have liked, but it’s certainly enough to conduct a statistically useful analysis. There’s no obvious bias embedded within the survey that I can find; respondents hailed from every region of the country, from Florida to North Dakota to Rhode Island; 91 percent described themselves as “conservative” or “very conservative.”

For this survey, I asked county chairs about their candidate preferences in a few different ways. For a first cut, I asked if they’re committed to supporting a particular candidate in the presidential race at this point. Just about half reported that they are currently uncommitted to a candidate. Among those who said they had made a choice, 19 percent said DeSantis, the Florida governor, and 17 percent said Trump.

This in itself is quite telling. Trump’s grip on the Republican Party was once legendary, and he is one of only two GOP candidates who has officially announced for president for 2024, the other being former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley. The former president certainly may end up the Republican nominee again, and his attacks on DeSantis have only begun. But the fact that Trump is not the first choice of this group and that fewer than one in five county chairs is committed to him suggests some considerable reservations.

I provided anonymity to respondents, but some allowed me to give their names and comments. One was Kylie Crosskno, chair of the Republican Party of Mississippi County, Ark., who remarked, “While I don’t live in Florida, I support the conservative actions that Mr. DeSantis has taken. He is not afraid to stand up for the principles and values of the Republican Party.”

I then sought to determine a somewhat softer level of candidate interest, and the results of this question were even worse for Trump. I asked these chairs what candidates they are considering supporting at this point. I permitted them to provide as many candidate names as they wanted, and most named more than one. (The percentages in the chart below thus add up to well over 100 percent.)

Among all the candidates named, DeSantis was the one who is receiving the most widespread consideration — mentioned by 73 percent of the county chairs. Trump was a rather distant second, mentioned by 43 percent. Indeed, Trump was mentioned just a bit more than Haley, who was named by 36 percent, and South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott, who was at 28 percent.

Again, this question does not imply any strong degree of commitment to the candidates. But it does point to who these local party leaders are thinking about at this early stage, and DeSantis easily takes the broadest swath of respondents.

The third approach I took to asking about candidate interest may be most revealing: I asked which candidate the county party chairs definitely did not want to see as the 2024 Republican presidential nominee.

The candidate who was rejected outright by the most county chairs was former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie; 55 percent of chairs didn’t want him. He was followed by Donald Trump Jr. (51 percent), former Vice President Mike Pence (43 percent), and then, rather stunningly, by Trump himself, named by 39 percent of chairs. That is, four in 10 county chairs do not want Trump to be the party’s next nominee. By contrast, just nine percent of county chairs have ruled out DeSantis, the best showing of any of the contenders.

The degree of disinterest in Trump is rather striking. In some ways, this looks similar to the GOP presidential contest of 2015-16, with a lot of resistance to Trump but still a path for his nomination. Trump had a low polling ceiling where support maxed out, but a high floor with a core group of unwavering supporters. In a crowded race, the opposition splintered, allowing Trump to eke out a win with a plurality of the vote. He may be counting on that scenario again, and the results of the survey do not rule that out. However, the survey does highlight one difference between now and 2016, which is that back then, opposition to Trump was spread out among a number of different candidates. Today, it seems much more concentrated behind DeSantis.

The numbers show DeSantis is in a strong position at the start of the race and before he even formally launches his all-but-certain presidential bid. In the fight to be the Trump alternative, at least by this measure, he is indisputably the frontrunner. (For Christie, things look rather grim.)

Still, the campaign has only just begun. I’ll be checking in with these key party leaders throughout 2023 and early 2024 to see how their minds are changing and where the race is really heading.

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Senior Congress leader Mohammed Ali Shabbir appealed to the Muslim community to support the ongoing Hath Se Haath Jodo yatra while addressing the Muslim Intellectuals Meet in Karimnagar on Wednesday.

The former Telangana leader of the Opposition urged the gathering to trust the party which is on a mission to expose the failures of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi-led state government.

“Throughout the last eight-and-a-half years, chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao has been cheating the minorities. He promised to increase the Muslim reservation in jobs and education from the existing 4% to 12%. But no efforts are being made to enact it. KCR has been cheating the Muslim community by wearing the fake mask of secularism,” Shabbir alleged.

Shabbir also said that Chattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel, Congress MP Jairam Ramesh, and other senior leaders will soon address the people of Karimnagar.

“Congress has always supported and empowered the Muslim community, I urge you to lend your support to the Haath Se Haath Jodo yatra,” Shabbir said.

The Haath Se Haath Jodo yatra entered its 20th day with Congress leader Revanth Reddy leading it.

Nagaland: NCP declares support to CM Rio, makes no reference to his ally BJP

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Bowing to the wishes of its elected legislators, Sharad Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Wednesday announced support to Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphu Rio, but stopped short of saying whether it would be part of the government.

After a meeting with Pawar and Baramati Lok Sabha member Supriya Sule on Tuesday, NCP general secretary Narendra Verma said the NCP chief had decided to accept the leadership of Chief Minister Rio “in the larger interest of the state of Nagaland”.

An NCP statement on Wednesday made no mention of the BJP, which is also a coalition partner of Rio’s Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP).

“On Tuesday morning, after listening to the North East in-charge he took the decision to accept the leadership of Mr N. Rio, Chief Minister of Nagaland, in the larger interest of the state of Nagaland,” Verma said in the statement.

The NCP had the best performance among the opposition parties, winning seven of the 12 seats it contested in the recently held assembly elections.

At the first meeting of NCP’s Nagaland legislature party on March 4 in Kohima, there was a discussion on whether the party should be a part of the government or it will play the role of main opposition.

The NCP said the newly-elected MLAs and its local unit were of the opinion the party must be a part of the government in the larger interest of the state and the good relationship that its MLAs share with Rio.

Pawar also approved the proposal to appoint NCP MLA Picto Shohe as the leader of the NCP Legislature Party in Nagaland.

Shohe was elected as MLA in 2018 on the Naga Peoples Front ticket. He later joined Rio’s NDPP, but crossed over to NCP after being denied ticket to contest elections.

Nagaland appeared headed towards a government supported by all political parties as NPP, NPF, LJP (Ram Vilas), RPI (Athawale), JD (United) and Independents have backed Rio.

Patwar Association’s Strike Enters Seventh Day, Tarigami Lends His Support

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: The Anantnag Patwar Association continued their sit-in protest for the seventh consecutive day at Achabal, to seek an early redressal of their demands.

The Patwar Association said they have been demanding a hike in pay scales for patwaris, departmental promotion of patwaris and girdawars, and a ban on direct recruitment of Tehsildars.

They said that construction of patwar khanas, creation of patwar halqas and girdawar circles, timely conduct of DPCs, and an increase in their allowances are also in their agenda.

“We are sitting here under the banner of All Jammu and Kashmir Patwari Association for the seventh consecutive day, to let the government know about our demands. We graduate patwaris have a grade pay issue which the government should consider.” they said.

“Education and finance departments , teachers , account officers in the finance department have a handsome grade pay. Similarly, we graduate Patwaris demand a genuine increase in our grade pay.”

The other issue is that girdawar circle and pathwar Halqa are the same since the time of Maharaja Hari Singh and  we demanding for their delimitation,”  they added.

“We would also like to draw the keen interest of the administration towards the direct recruitment of Naib Tehsildars and demand a 75:25 quota, like the one in vogue in the Union territory of Ladakh and 75%, Girdawars and departmental Patwaris should be promoted to Naib Tehsildar”, the protesting paatwaris  further said.

Meanwhile CPI (M) leader Mohamad Yousuf Tarigami also urged the government to redress genuine demands of striking patwaris. “The strike of patwaris has paralysed the working in revenue department”, Tarigami said.

“The administration has been giving assurances and making promises that their genuine grievances would be redressed, but nothing seems to be happening on ground, forcing them to go on protest. The demands include increase in the grade pay of graduate patwaris, timely departmental promotion of patwaris, girdawaris, rent for Patwar Khanas (Private accommodation), construction of new Patwar Khanas, creation of new patwar halqas and Girdawar circles are all genuine demands, which must be fulfilled without any further delay”, Tarigami said in a statement.

He urged that the Government must talk to the representatives of the Association and take effective steps to settle their genuine demands. (GNS)

Opposition come out in Lalu’s support against CBI interrogation

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The opposition has come out in support of Lalu Prasad and his family after the CBI on Monday reached at the residence of former Chief Minister Rabri Devi.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Congress General Secretary, said, “Those opposition leaders who have not bowed down against BJP are being subjected to harassment through ED and CBI. Today, they are torturing Rabri Devi while Lalu Prasad and his family are being harassed for years because they did not bow down. BJP wants to crush the opposition voice.”

Independent MP Kapil Sibal too slammed the CBI for interrogating former Bihar Chief Minister Rabri Devi.

Sibal said that it is being done to pressurise Lalu Prasad.

“The CBI heat is on Lalu Prasad. We all know the fragile state of his health. To pressurise Tejashwi, the more the government does this, the more the people will turn against this government,” Sibal said in a tweet.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) told IANS that it was not any raid or search operation, but the team paid a visit to the house of the former Bihar Chief Minister for further investigation in connection with the land for job scam involving former Railway Minister Lalu Prasad and others.

The opposition leaders accused the CBI of conducting raids ahead of Holi.

In this case, Rabri Devi, Lalu Prasad and others have been summoned by Delhi’s Rouse Avenue District Courts to appear before it on March 15. The CBI has got the prosecution sanction against Lalu Prasad in the case.

Meghalaya: In a new twist, Conrad Sangma gets support of UDP, PDF

    [ad_1]

Shillong: In a big jolt to the Trinamool Congress and the Congress, which were looking for avenues for an alternate formation to keep Conrad Sangma’s National People’s Party (NPP) out of power in Meghalaya, the United Democratic Party (UDP) — that emerged the second-largest, on Sunday extended its support to the NPP for the next government formation in the northeastern state.

Metbah Lyndoh, the president of UDP that bagged 11 seats to finish second behind the NPP (26), in a letter to Conrad Sangma mentioned: “Congratulations on your party’s performance, resulting in the resounding victory. In light of the people’s mandate, I on behalf of the parliamentary party of the United Democratic Party, do hereby extend support for government formation.”

The UDP was also an ally in the previous NPP-led government in Meghalaya.

Meanwhile, People’s Democratic Front (PDF), which was earlier holding talks with Trinamool Congress leader Mukul Sangma for an alternative formation, also joined the UDP to tender support to the NPP.

Following the fresh developments, the NPP now has the support of 45 MLAs in the 60-member Assembly in the state.

The election was held on February 27 while the result was announced on March 2.
