  • Residents of Chinpazpora in Bandipora Express Concern as Water Starts Inundating Residential Areas

    [ad_1]

    Babar Rather

Bandipora, Jul 10 (GNS): In a worrying development, water from the Naz Nallah Channel of Walur lake has started entering residential areas in village Chinpazpora of Ajas in Bandipora district.

A local Parvaiz Ahmad told GNS that the main cause of concern for them is the dysfunctional state of the Zadwa gauge – a crucial gate controlling the water levels from Wular Lake.

“Due to this malfunction, the water has started to seep into the residential areas of Chinpazpora village,” he said.

Worried villagers expressed apprehensions that if the gauge is not restored and closed promptly, the water may eventually submerge their homes in the coming days even as the link road is already partially submerged.

The residents expressed their disappointment over WUCMA’s failure to live up to its assurances’ of increasing the water holding capacity of Wular Lake. They claimed that a substantial amount of funds has been spent on this endeavor, but the situation on the ground tells a different story.

The villagers have appealed to the WUCMA authorities and the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Bandipora to urgently intervene and address the imminent issue to mitigate the threat posed by the surging water levels.

When contacted, Coordinator WUCMA Irfan Rasool said that he will look into the matter.

It remains to be seen how the authorities will tackle this situation and provide relief to the residents of Chinpazpora. (GNS)

AMU starts process to hold election for teachers’ representatives to Executive Council

    [ad_1]

Aligarh: The Aligarh Muslim University on Saturday initiated the process to hold an election for teachers’ representatives to the Executive Council by appointing a chief election officer.

The development comes ahead of the council’s meeting for empanelling the next vice chancellor of AMU.

According to an official notification issued by the AMU, Professor Mohhamad Parwez has been appointed as the chief election officer to conduct the elections for selecting the four teachers’ representatives.

    MS Education Academy

The teachers are elected to the council for a period of three years. The elections were last held in 2018 and the term of the representatives elected back then ended in 2021, AMU officials said.

Senior faculty members had last month announced that if elections to several democratic institutions of the university were not announced at an early date, the “teachers would have no option but to start an agitation to press for their demand”.

Professor Aftab Alam, a senior faculty member who was earlier representing the teachers in the council, welcomed the development.

“No elections have been held since 2018 and this step was long overdue. We are now awaiting the notification of dates because any further delay in holding these elections will lead to delay in the appointment of the next vice chancellor,” he said.

  • Top Dem super PAC starts Biden ad blitz, pledges $75 million campaign effort

Top Dem super PAC starts Biden ad blitz, pledges $75 million campaign effort

    [ad_1]

The president’s long-awaited announcement on Tuesday allows Biden to begin fundraising for what will be an expensive campaign. But his April launch also gave the green light for Democratic groups like Priorities USA to jumpstart 2024 efforts backing the president.

“It is essential to remind voters of what’s at stake in 2024, and to do so online. Issues such as abortion access, protecting our climate, curbing gun control, making health care more affordable and making our economy work for every American will be the centerpieces of this campaign,” said Danielle Butterfield, the group’s executive director.

Founded in 2011, Priorities USA is among the Democratic Party’s largest political action committees. But it won’t be the only one supporting Biden, or the main one for that. Future Forward, which already has been running TV ads, will likely be Biden’s primary outside spending apparatus, though American Bridge and others are also expected to have a share in the campaign’s portfolio.

There was also some uncertainty about the role Biden-allied Building Back Together might play after the 2022 election. But instead of paid media campaigns, BBT will focus on coordinating among Democratic groups to highlight the Biden administration’s efforts to implement the president’s agenda.

Priorities’ ad, titled “Our Strength, Our Champion,” focuses on the Biden administration’s accomplishments and echoes the tone of Biden’s announcement video — with imagery of Jan. 6 and Biden’s leading GOP opponent, former President Donald Trump. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, another expected 2024 GOP candidate, make appearances as well. The ad will stream in English and Spanish.

The ad then runs through a list of Biden’s accomplishments, noting that he has “worked across the aisle,” “protected marriage equality,” “took historic climate action,” and “lowered health care costs.”

In the final seconds of the video, with Biden’s voice playing in the background, “Joe Biden is fighting with us. Let’s finish the job together” flashed across the screen.

  • Wall Street starts to fear a debt limit crisis

Wall Street starts to fear a debt limit crisis

    [ad_1]

    financial markets wall street 17149

How Wall Street investors react to a possible default is crucial because they’re the ones who finance the country’s enormous debt by buying the securities that Treasury sells to fund the government. If they shy away from the market, interest rates could skyrocket, squeezing the government, businesses and consumers.

That’s why their level of confidence can serve as the strongest force to drive Washington partisans to make a deal.

For most of this year, many on Wall Street assumed that lessons learned from the 2011 crisis — including voters furious over declines in their retirement accounts as stocks plunged — would prevent such an event from happening again. That faith is starting to fade.

“Debt ceiling negotiations are essentially nowhere,” Brian Gardner, chief Washington policy strategist at investment bank Stifel, wrote in a note to clients. Gardner added that while a last-minute deal could certainly emerge, “the GOP’s narrow majority and the Speaker’s tenuous political position make the pathway to an agreement more uncertain than usual.”

To be clear, it’s nowhere near all-out panic. The government has until the summer to strike a deal, when the Treasury Department is likely to run out of room to keep paying the nation’s bills and servicing its existing debt.

But signs of stress are piling up, especially after House Speaker Kevin McCarthy came to the New York Stock Exchange on April 17 to make the GOP case that any hike in the borrowing limit must come with significant spending cuts. That’s something the White House and congressional Democrats say they won’t consider.

The shift from general nonchalance to rising concern can be seen in an obscure corner of the markets: the soaring cost of insuring against exposure to U.S. debt through instruments called credit default swaps, which mitigate risk for large holders of Treasury securities.

The cost of insuring against a U.S. default rose to its highest level in over a decade on Thursday as JPMorgan analysts said there was a “non-trivial risk” of at least a technical default on the government’s debt in which the nation runs out of borrowing ability for even a short period before a deal is reached.

Darrell Cronk, chief investment officer of Wells Fargo’s wealth and investment management division, said his biggest worry is that the “X-Date” — the moment when emergency moves to forestall default are exhausted — gets pulled forward to early-to-mid June with 2022 tax receipts likely weak after a brutal year for markets.

Goldman Sachs researchers said they also expect a much shorter timeline due to a steep reduction in capital gains revenue. And McCarthy’s hardline position — as well as questions about whether he can unify House Republicans over any strategy at all — have amped up alarms. “People seem to be dug in a little bit more in the trenches,” Cronk said.

Some bank executives said they are growing more concerned about the state of play in Washington but remain unsure how to inject themselves into the debate. Speaking out would be unlikely to sway hard-line conservatives, they fear, given that such calls would probably be dismissed as special pleading by rich Wall Streeters.

So for now, they are mostly issuing anodyne statements arguing for the importance of not allowing the U.S. to default, in a bid to nudge the two sides toward a solution.

Following McCarthy’s address, congressional Republicans urged bankers to press Biden to engage with the GOP.

“Obviously, people [on Wall Street] are worried,” Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio said in an interview. “We’ll just say, ‘Look, it’s a two-party system. And Kevin McCarthy gets to make the first shot across the bow, but they need to put pressure on Joe Biden, to the extent they’re able to, to actually come to the negotiating table.’”

Rep. Warren Davidson of Ohio said he’s telling bankers that “the only way that we’re going to not default later is if we start taking corrective action now.”

“Joe Biden’s plan is to not take corrective action now,” said Davidson, a member of the House Freedom Caucus. “That’s a nonstarter. We’re not going to move his ‘no action now’ bill,” he said, referring to Democrats’ hopes of passing a “clean” debt limit hike with no spending cuts.

Democrats expressed frustration that the financial world hasn’t exerted more pressure on Republicans.

“Wall Street and business need to start getting energized and put pressure on Republicans to do what we’ve done all these years, which is pay for the debt that we incurred and not hold the American people hostage,” said Rep. Pramila Jayapal of Washington, who chairs the Congressional Progressive Caucus.

Senate Banking Chair Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) said he was confident Wall Street would eventually speak up. “But I think that it’s telling that McCarthy went to Wall Street to talk about all this because he’s Wall Street’s guy,” Brown added. “So we’ll see.”

Meanwhile, concerns over the impact that a nasty fight over the debt limit could have on the economy are showing up on bank earnings calls.

Goldman CEO David Solomon identified uncertainty over the debt limit as a potential source of volatility during the bank’s call on Tuesday. An hour earlier, responding to a question from POLITICO, Bank of America CFO Alastair Borthwick told reporters he didn’t have much to say on the status of non-existent negotiations between the White House and McCarthy.

“Obviously, we’re all hoping that gets resolved successfully,” he added.

Citi CEO Jane Fraser said her bank believes it’s “now more likely that the U.S. will enter into a shallow recession” later this year. “The biggest unknown,” she told analysts on the bank’s recent earnings call, is “how the debt ceiling plays out.”

BlackRock Vice Chair Philipp Hildebrand warned at the Bloomberg New Economy Gateway Europe Forum on Thursday that default would undermine “a basic anchor” of the world’s financial system and “must not happen.”

“All we can do is to pray that everyone in the United States understands how important the sanctity of the sovereign signature of the leading currency, of the leading bond market, of the leading economy in the world is,” Hildebrand said.

  • Kerala to get Vande Bharat Express, BJP starts celebrations

Kerala to get Vande Bharat Express, BJP starts celebrations

    [ad_1]

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala, which had witnessed intense protests due to which the state government had to shelve its proposed flagship Silver Line semi-high-speed rail corridor project, will get a new Vande Bharat Express train from the Centre soon.

Though an official announcement is yet to come, the state BJP leadership confirmed on Friday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would make the big announcement on his arrival in the state later this month.

They described it as a “Vishu kaineettam” to the people of the state from the Centre and the Prime Minister. According to tradition, elders of the family give gifts, especially money, to members of the house as “kaineettam” on the day of the harvest festival “Vishu”, which falls on Saturday, April 15, this year.

    MS Education Academy

The unexpected arrival of rakes of the semi-high speed train in Palakkad this morning from Chennai evoked a great response among local people, who thronged the station along with BJP workers to get a glimpse of it and accord it a grand reception.

Railway officials of the train were garlanded, and sweets were distributed among them by saffron party activists celebrating the occasion.

“I am so glad to see that the coaches of an express train like Vande Bharat are arriving in my state. I am in my late 70s, and I am so happy to know that I can travel in an express train in Kerala soon,” an elated elderly man told reporters at Palakkad railway station.

Union Minister V Muraleedharan and state BJP president K Surendran said the new Vande Bharat Express was a “Vishu Kaineettam” by PM Modi to the people of the state.

In a Facebook post, Surendran also criticised their political opponents. “Those who have been making fun of (us) over Vande Bharat are now lamenting that they have not been informed about its arrival,” he said.

He also said it was “childish” to allege that the prestigious train was being introduced in the state only in view of the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

Sharing the same sentiments, Muraleedharan said the Prime Minister had now given an answer to those who raised doubts over the introduction of the Vande Bharat Express in Kerala, and thanked Modi and the railway minister for allotting it to the southern state.

He told reporters here that the semi-high-speed train would accelerate the development of Kerala.

Taking a dig at the Pinarayi Vijayan-led state government here over its shelved Silver Line project, he said the Centre does not bring development by evicting tens of thousands of people.

“The state government is trying to implement the Silver Line by evicting thousands of people. But, the Centre is bringing Vande Bharat for the smooth journey of everyone without causing any difficulty to anyone,” he said.

He also rejected the charges of a political agenda behind the allotment and said the PM had made such announcements ahead of his visits before as well.

CPI(M) Lok Sabha member A M Ariff and UDF MP N K Premachandran welcomed the unexpected allotment of the Vande Bharat Express to Kerala but opined that it could not be seen as a special consideration shown by the Modi government to the southern state.

Ariff said the traffic issues in Kerala could not be resolved by the arrival of a single train.

Rejecting BJP leaders’ claims that the train was PM’s gift to the people of the state, Premachandran said there was no need to attribute any politics to it and that Kerala had been allotted the new train just as many other states have.

V Abdurahiman, the minister in charge of railway affairs in the state, said he would respond only if the state government received an official confirmation in this regard.

The arrival of Vande Bharat is likely to be a hot political topic during the 2024 Lok Sabha polls in the state, as the BJP leaders and workers are claiming that the train was allotted to the state thanks to the PM’s care for Keralites.

BJP leaders are calling the Vande Bharat train the answer to the state government’s charges that the Centre was creating hurdles in the development path of Kerala by denying permission to its ambitious Silver Line project, which it was forced to shelve due to intense protests by local people.

The Silver Line project was envisaged to cover a 530-kilometre stretch from Thiruvananthapuram to Kasaragod and was to be developed by K-Rail, a joint venture of the Kerala government and the Ministry of Railways.

It was planned that the semi-high-speed rail line would have 11 stations and be built at an estimated cost of around Rs 64,000 crore.

Also known as K-Rail, the mammoth project was opposed by parties, including the Congress and the BJP, as well as by the local people in some parts of the State.
