Petition accusing Amit Shah of spreading communal tension filed

Darbhanga: A Congress leader in Bihar on Tuesday filed a petition before a court accusing Union Home Minister Amit Shah of spreading communal tensions and tarnishing the party’s reputation.
The petition was filed before Chief Judicial Magistrate, Darbhanga, by Pratibha Singh, who is the Congress’ in charge of Hayaghat assembly seat.
The petitioner has assailed an election speech of Shah, delivered on April 25 in Karnataka where assembly polls will be held on May 10.

The petitioner has taken exception to Shah’s statement that the state will be “afflicted with riots” if the Congress, shown as having the upper hand in poll surveys, formed the next government in Karnataka, which is currently ruled by the BJP.
The petitioner has contended that the statement has cast aspersions on the Congress and triggered communal tension.
The court has fixed May 4 as the next date of hearing in the matter.

Nothing wrong in spreading Christianity, no case of forceful conversion: TN govt to SC

New Delhi: The Tamil Nadu government has told the Supreme Court there is nothing wrong in the acts of missionaries spreading Christianity as Article 25 of the Constitution guarantees every citizen the right to propagate his religion.
The M.K. Stalin government said, “Conversion of poor people to other religions by intimidating, threatening, deceivingly, luring through gifts and also by using black magic and superstition are not reported in Tamil Nadu.”
In an affidavit to a PIL filed by advocate Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay, the DMK government said: “As far as Tamil Nadu is concerned, there have been no incidents of forceful conversion reported in the past many years. The allegations raised by the petitioner…are alleged to have taken place only in certain tribal areas in Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and India’s Hindi belt and therefore even according to the petitioner, it does not apply to the State of Tamil Nadu”.

The state government contended that Article 25 of the Constitution guarantees every citizen the right to propagate his religion, therefore the acts of missionaries spreading Christianity by itself cannot be seen as something against law. “But if their act of spreading their religion is against public order, morality and health and to the other provisions of Part III of the Constitution it has to be viewed seriously,” it said.
The DMK government contended that the citizens are at liberty to choose the religion they want to follow.
“The Constitution does not give a fundamental right to any person to turn another man into one’s own religion. But it gives a right to any person to propagate his religion. Likewise, the Constitution does not prevent any person from getting converted to the religion of his choice. The citizens of the country should be allowed freely to choose their religion and it would not be appropriate for the government to put spokes to their personal belief and privacy,” it said.
The state government submitted that the petitioner has made sweeping allegations against it saying that the government was determined to remove the conversion angle from the case of Lavanya’s suspicious death.
“The petitioner, who belongs to the Bharatiya Janata Party, has attempted to convert the court proceeding into a political fight by bringing in ideological politics into the matter. All the allegations made against the Government of Tamil Nadu are politically motivated. There are no instances of forceful conversion of religion reported in Tamil Nadu…,” it said.

The DMK government contended that the state shall have the responsibility to take measures against persons who deliberately and maliciously intend to outrage the religious feelings of any class by insulting their religion or religious beliefs.
The state government said: “One of the rights guaranteed by the Indian Constitution is the right to Freedom of Religion. As a secular nation, every citizen of India has the right to freedom of religion, i.e., the right to follow any religion.”
It said, “As one can find so many religions being practiced in India, the Constitution guarantees to every citizen the liberty to follow the religion of their choice. According to this fundamental right, every citizen has the opportunity to practice and spread his religion peacefully. The right to have faith in a particular religion can be traced under Article 21 of the Constitution and it is an inviolable right”.
Many states have passed their own version of the anti-conversion laws and some are still in existence. The Tamil Nadu government said the anti-conversion laws are prone to misuse against minorities and there is no data on convictions under the various anti conversions’ laws of the states.
“In 2002, the State of Tamil Nadu passed the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Forcible Conversion of Religion Act, 2002 (Tamil Nadu Act 56 of 2002). However, the same was repealed by the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Forcible Conversion of Religion (Repeal) Act, 2006 (Tamil Nadu Act 10 of 2006) due to popular opposition. In the year 2003, the State of Gujarat passed the Gujarat Freedom of Religion Act, 2003. In 2017 and 2018, Jharkhand and Uttarakhand States passed anti-conversion laws, respectively. In 2021, the Karnataka State Legislative Assembly passed the Karnataka Protection of Right to freedom of religion bill”, said the state government.
In connection with Upadhyay’s plea, the state government said: “The prayers sought by the petitioner in the present writ petition do not only attack a specific community with intentions to divide the society through hate, fuelling religious intolerance in the country, bringing disharmony in the society.”
Upadhyay moved the apex court seeking a direction to declare that fraudulent religious conversion and religious conversion by intimidation, threatening, and deceivingly luring through gifts and monetary benefits offends Articles 14, 21 and 25.

JKBOSE Warns Private Schools Against Using Misleading Hoardings, Spreading Misinformation

SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education (BOSE) has warned all the private schools of action for misleading parents and the students by using hoardings that falsely indicate they are affiliated with other recognized boards or imparting studies on other patterns.
Secretary JKBOSE has issued a circular to all private academic institutions affiliated with them, cautioning against the use of misleading hoardings.
To prevent such fraudulent practices, the circular states that all institutions must install signboards that clearly reflect the name of their institution with the “School Code” along with the name of the affiliating boards as “Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education” in bold letters.
To ensure adherence to the circular, the BOSE has directed all Deputy, Assistant, and Incharge Officers of the Sub and Branch Offices of the Kashmir Division to acquire an action taken report with GI-tagged photographic proof from all affiliated academic institutions in their respective domains.
The schools have been asked to submit the action taken report to the office of the Joint Secretary, General, Kashmir Division, within a period of seven working days.
An official said the directive is intended to provide the BOSE with firsthand information about the implementation of the circular.
“Such measures will prevent any further misleading of gullible students and ensure that academic institutions affiliated with the Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education maintain transparency in their operations,” the Board official said. (KNO)

Goa cops issue summons to two sisters over posts spreading religious hatred on Insta

Panaji: The crime branch of Goa police has summoned two sisters against whom a case has been registered for allegedly spreading religious hatred against the majority community through their posts on Instagram, an official said on Tuesday.
The police had last week registered a suo moto case against two Instagram accounts over posts that were derogatory in nature and hurt religious sentiments, he said.
Superintendent of Police (Crime Branch) Nidhin Valsan told PTI that the twin sisters have been summoned on April 27 as a part of the investigation in the case.

The summons are issued to the sisters under section 41 (A) of the Criminal Procedure Code, 153-A (hurting religious sentiments) and section 67 of the Information Technology Act, it was stated.

New Omicron subvariant spreading in US

Los Angeles: A new Omicron subvariant is spreading in the United States, and has accounted for nearly 10 per cent of new weekly Covid-19 cases reported across the country, according to data updated by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The subvariant XBB.1.16, referred to as “arcturus”, has been added by the CDC to its variant tracker, Xinhua news agency reported.
The percentage is expected to increase in the coming weeks, and it may become the next dominant coronavirus strain in the country, experts warned.

The highly transmissible Omicron subvariant XBB.1.5 remains the dominant strain in the US and accounted for about 73.6 per cent of new Covid-19 cases this week, CDC data showed.
The World Health Organization is monitoring XBB.1.16, which is contributing to a recent surge of Covid-19 cases in India.

BJP, RSS attacking democracy, spreading hatred & violence: Rahul Gandhi

Bhalki: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday accused the ruling BJP and RSS of attacking democracy and spreading hatred and violence in the country.
He also appealed to the people to support the Congress and ensure that the party wins at least 150 seats in the May 10 Assembly polls in Karnataka, and comes to power with a full majority.
“Bidar is Basavanna’s (12th century social reformer) ‘karma bhoomi’. If someone first spoke about democracy and showed the path towards democracy it was Basavanna. It is sad that today across the country, people from RSS and BJP are attacking democracy,” Gandhi said.

Addressing a public meeting here, he alleged that BJP and RSS are attacking Basavanna’s ideals of- equal partnership, equal opportunities, and that everyone should move ahead together.
“They are spreading hatred and violence in Hindustan, and they are taking away money from poor and weaker section people and giving it to two or three rich people,” he added.
AICC General Secretaries K C Venugopal and Randeep Singh Surjewala (in-charge of Karnataka), KPCC working president and candidate from Bhalki Assembly seat Eshwar Khandre were among those present.
Expressing confidence about the Congress coming to power, Gandhi said the party government’s first cabinet meeting will take a decision on implementing its poll guarantees.
The Congress party has announced four poll ‘guarantees’ — 200 units of free power to all households (Gruha Jyoti), Rs 2,000 monthly assistance to the woman head of every family (Gruha Lakshmi), 10 kg of rice free to every member of a BPL household (Anna Bhagya), and Rs 3,000 every month for graduate youth and Rs 1,500 for diploma holders (both in the age group of 18-25) for two years (YuvaNidhi), on coming to power in the state.

He said the Congress will not make false promises like Prime Minister Narendra Modi did regarding depositing Rs 15 lakh in every bank account, and war against black money, among others, and will fulfill its promises immediately after coming to power.
“Whoever becomes the Chief Minister of Karnataka, will convert guarantees into law, on the first day after coming to power,” he added.

Kashmiri farmers spreading fragrance of success: PM Modi

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi Sunday said that Kashmiri farmers were spreading the fragrance of their success.
In his monthly radio broadcast ‘Mann Ki Baat’, the PM talked about the farmers who had shifted towards growing lavender and the benefits they were receiving through the government’s aroma scheme.
“Another effort by the Kashmiri farmers is spreading the fragrance of its success. There is a small town Bhaderwah in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir. The farmers there traditionally used to grow maize, but some farmers decided to do something innovative. They shifted towards floriculture. Under this, around 2500 farmers are growing lavender. They have also benefitted from the aroma scheme of the government. This has increased their income several times. And today, along with the lavender, the fragrance of their success is also spreading,” he said.
The PM pointed out the rising demand for lotus stems in Kashmir known by local name ‘Nadru’.
“Whenever we talk about Kashmir or Srinagar, the pictures of the mountains and Dal Lake come in front of us. We all want to enjoy the scenic beauty, but there is one more speciality attached to it. Dal Lake is also known for its delicious lotus stems. They are known by different names in the country, and in Kashmir, they are referred to as Nadru,” he said.
The PM said that looking at the rising demand for Nadru, the farmers had created a Farmers Producer Organisation (FPO), and 250 farmers had become a part of it.
“Today, the farmers are able to export the produce of FPOs to foreign countries. Recently, they sent two sets to UAE. This is not just taking up the name of Kashmir, but also increasing the income of the farmers,” he said.
The PM also paid tribute to the woman power.

“This is the time of Navratri, the time to worship Shakti. Today, the potential of India which is emerging from a new perspective, our woman power has a very big role in it. Recently, many such examples have emerged before us. You must have seen Asia’s first female loco pilot Surekha Yadav on social media. Surekha ji, setting another record, has also become the first woman loco pilot of Vande Bharat Express as well,” he said.

Referring to film producer Guneet Monga, whose documentary ‘The Elephant Whisperers’ won the Oscar award earlier this month, the PM said, “This month producer Guneet Monga and director Kartiki Gonsalves brought laurels to the country by winning an Oscar for their documentary, ‘The Elephant Whisperers’.
“Sister Jyotirmayi Mohanty, Scientist of Bhabha Atomic Research Center has also notched another achievement for the country. Jyotirmoyee has received a special award from IUPAC in the field of chemistry and chemical engineering. Earlier this year, India’s Under-19 women’s cricket team created history by winning the T-20 World Cup.”

Referring to women in politics, he said, “If you look at politics, a new beginning has taken place in Nagaland. In Nagaland, for the first time in 75 years, two women legislators have reached the Vidhan Sabha through their victory. One of them has also been made a minister in the Government of Nagaland, that is, for the first time the people of the state have also got a woman minister.”
The PM also mentioned women members of the NDRF contingent, which had gone for relief and rehabilitation work in quake-hit Turkey. “India has also deployed a women-only platoon in the peacekeeping force under the UN mission,” he said. The PM also referred to Group Captain Shalija Dhami, the first woman Air Force officer to get a Command Appointment in a Combat Unit. He also mentioned Captain Shiva Chauhan of the Indian Army, the first woman officer to be posted at Siachen. The PM also highlighted the importance of organ donation and solar energy in his broadcast.

UP: 9 booked for spreading rumours about Kashi Vishwanath temple

Varanasi: A case has been registered against nine persons for allegedly spreading rumours that the Kashi Vishwanath (KV) temple administration was charging a fee for ‘sparsh darshan’ of the presiding deity.
The police spokesman said that an FIR has been lodged under sections 153-A (disturbing communal harmony), 295 (insulting religion) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code, and the relevant sections of the IT Act on the basis of a complaint filed by temple official Arvind Shukla.
According to the complainant, a few persons visited the temple on March 2, a day before ‘Rangbhari Ekadashi’.
As one of them, Ajay Sharma, donated Rs 500 to the temple, he was given a donation slip at the temple’s counter located on the premises of Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple Trust, a police official said.
A picture of the slip was posted on a social media platform, which was shared multiple times, thus creating the rumour, the complainant said.
Giving a clarification, the temple administration said no fee was being charged from devotees for ‘sparsh darshan’.

Spreading Wings: Akasa Air plans to procure over 100 aircraft

Delhi: While Akasa Air has already placed a firm order for 72 Boeing 737 MAX airplanes, the low-cost airline has plans of placing an order for over 100 aircraft in the time to come.
Akasa Air has completed six months of operation, and with the delivery of one aircraft every 15 days, the airline has reached a fleet size of 17 aircraft and has flown over one million passengers since its launch in August 2022.
Akasa Air has been expanding its network across the country in a phased manner with a commitment towards making travel accessible in India through the introduction of routes in Tier 2 and 3 cities.
The company recently received its 17th aircraft and will have a fleet size of 18 by the end of March. Over the next four years, the airline will add 54 additional aircraft, taking its total fleet size to 72.
Without disclosing the exact number, Vinay Dube, Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Akasa Air, said that by the end of the year, the airline will place a large order for aircraft, which will take the fleet size to three digits.
“We will continue to strengthen our network and service offerings and extend an unmatched travel experience to our passengers. Bengaluru being our first home is special in many ways, and we are proud of the growing connectivity we are able to offer from the city.
“As we plan our next phase of expansion to serve India’s increasing travel demands, both domestic and international, we remain committed to our focus of connecting people, cultures and cities underscored by our warm, efficient and inclusive customer service,” he said.
Six months into operation, the airline is operating more than 700 weekly flights across 14 domestic destinations, including Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi, Chennai, Cochin, Ahmedabad, Guwahati, Agartala, Goa, Vizag, Pune, Lucknow, Hyderabad and Varanasi.

With 36 daily flights from Bengaluru, Akasa Air is the third largest domestic carrier in the city. The airline has flown a total of 0.5 million passengers from the city, which contributes to 70 per cent of the total number of passengers flown across its network to date.
With a growing demand for air travel to and from Bengaluru, the airline has significantly scaled up its operations from the city, currently connecting it with daily flights to 12 destinations across the country.

Indian-American charged for spreading false rumours about public firms

New York: The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in the US has charged Indian-American Milan Vinod Patel for spreading more than 100 false rumours about public companies to generate over $1 million in illicit trading profits.
Patel received rumours that he knew to be false from his accomplices about purported market-moving events, such as corporate mergers or acquisitions, involving publicly-traded companies, the SEC said in its complaint.
He then spread the rumours to his contacts at financial news services, chat rooms, and message boards.
“Today we charged Milan Vinod Patel for his central role in a multi-million dollar scheme to spread and trade on more than 100 false rumours about public companies,” the SEC tweeted.
Patel also disseminated the rumours to Mark Melnick, a host of a stock trading webcast, who shared them with his webcast subscribers.
The circulation of more than 100 rumours between December 2017 and January 2020 caused the prices of the subject companies’ securities to rise temporarily.
This allowed Patel to sell his holdings in such securities and generate more than $1 million in illicit trading profits.
The US District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, charged Patel with violating Section 17(a) of the Securities Act of 1933 and Section 10(b) of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 and Rule 10b-5 thereunder.

The SEC had previously charged Barton Ross, Mark Melnick, Anthony Salandra, and Charles Parrino for their roles in this scheme.
