    An official said that an accident took place at village Vehil Shopian as an autorickshaw turned turtle when its driver tried to save a dog on the road.

    In the incident, an autorickshaw driver identified as Sanan Ahmad Mir, son of Nisar Ahmed resident of Hanjipora Shopian received critical injuries, who succumbed to his injuries on way to the hospital.

    “We have done a lot already in terms of the donations, but now the question is more on sustainability,” Esa Pulkkinen, the permanent secretary, or deputy, in Finland’s defense ministry, said as military leaders gathered at Ramstein last month.

    “Besides supporting Ukraine, we also need to replenish our own stocks, right?” one European diplomat said.

    SRINAGAR: In the picturesque Lahaul valley of Himachal Pradesh, an ecological disaster is unfolding as the willow trees that have sustained the region’s inhabitants for generations are dying. A mysterious disease, coupled with improper irrigation resulting from a lack of winter snowfall, is the cause of this devastation. The valley’s residents rely on the willows for firewood and fodder, making this an urgent situation that requires immediate attention.

    To address this crisis, the Himachal Pradesh government has announced a plan to grow Kashmir willows in nurseries before planting them in the forest. The government has already planted 3.4 lakh trees, but more action is needed to save the valley’s source of livelihood.

    Lahaul-Spiti legislator Ravi Thakur brought the issue to the assembly’s attention, stating that the willow trees had decayed in just 18 years, impacting every household in the valley. He proposed that more Kashmir willows be planted to replace the decaying trees.

    Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu responded by saying that the government is searching for a cure and replacement for the decaying trees. The government is currently conducting studies to find the cause of the decay at Palampur’s Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishavvidyalaya and Nauni’s Dr Y S Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry. The government has also enlisted the help of Shimla’s Himalayan Forestry Research Institute to find the cause of decay and develop disease-resistant cloned varieties of willow for Lahaul-Spiti.

    To ensure the survival of the trees, the forest department has recommended growing willows in polybags at nurseries instead of planting them as naked rootstock. The department is also advising local landowners to use this technique. Additionally, the plantation site must be located near irrigation facilities since willows need a lot of water to grow. Rootstock for plantation should be selected from healthy, young, and vigorous plants, with pollarding done scientifically to avoid mechanical damage.

    While the government has recommended a mixed plantation of willow species based on local suitability, it has stated that it will not replace the decaying forest trees with Kashmiri willow trees to prevent the spread of disease caused by monoculture.

    New Delhi: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday hit back at the government for raising Rahul Gandhi’s democracy remarks in Parliament, saying those “crushing” democracy are talking of saving it.

    He also dubbed Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “dictator”.

    Kharge took out a protest march from Parliament House complex to Vijay Chowk along with MPs of other opposition parties, including those of the BRS, Left parties and AAP, after the BJP launched an offensive against Gandhi for allegedly defaming India by his remarks on democracy and demanded an apology from him.

    Gandhi had recently alleged in London that the structures of Indian democracy are under “brutal attack” and there is a full-scale assault on the institutions of the country.

    Talking to reporters at Vijay Chowk, Kharge said, “They (BJP) are crushing and destroying democracy and are talking of saving democracy and the country’s pride.”

    He charged that there was no rule of law and that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was running the country like a “dictator”.

    “They are ‘suppressing’ opposition parties through ‘misuse’ of agencies. This is like ‘ulta chor kotwal ko daante’ (pot calling the kettle black),” the Congress chief alleged.

    Kharge alleged that PM Modi has “ridiculed” India abroad several times and cited examples of his speeches in China, South Korea, Canada, UAE.

    If the prime minister can say all kinds of things against India, why is it a crime if Rahul Gandhi does so, he said.

    Kharge alleged that all this is being done by the government to divert attention from the Adani-Hindenburg issue.

    “We are demanding a JPC on the Adani issue. The government is trying to divert attention from this…We are together and will continue to demand JPC on the Adani issue,” he said.

    The Leader of Opposition also alleged that he was being discriminated against in the Rajya Sabha as the Leader of the House was allowed to speak for 10 minutes and when he rose the House was adjourned after two minutes.

    Opposition parties earlier met in the chamber of Leader of Opposition to coordinate their strategy in Parliament.

    This is the first day of the second part of the Budget session of Parliament.

    San Francisco: Telegram Messenger has launched major upgrades to its application with features like Power Saving Mode, Auto-Send Invite Links, Read Time in Small Groups, and more.

    Now, users can use the Power Saving Mode feature to preserve their device’s battery life.

    When the battery reaches a certain percentage, the mode turns off resource-intensive features such as auto-playing videos and GIFs, sticker animations, and background updates.

    “You can toggle Power Saving mode or tweak individual settings for autoplay, animations, and effects in Settings > Power Saving,” Telegram said in a blogpost.

    Moreover, the company said that it had tested more than 200 Android phones and created “optimised default settings” for users.

    Other than battery-saving mode, Telegram has also introduced the Auto-Send Invite Links feature, letting users control who is allowed to add them to groups.

    “If you’re inviting someone who restricts this, you can now quickly send them an invite link as a message,” the company said.

    Telegram has also rolled out a Read Time in Small Groups feature, which will now show the time when users’ messages were read by each person in groups under 100 members.

    Along with this, the company is also pushing features like new playback speed control for videos in chat, animated emojis and interactive reactions, translated bot descriptions, and improved folder support on iOS.
