ED summons NCP MLA Hasan Mushrif for questioning in money laundering case

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate has summoned senior NCP leader and MLA Hasan Mushrif for questioning in a money laundering investigation being conducted against him and others, officials said Saturday.

The politician has been asked to depose before the federal probe agency in Mumbai next week so that his statements can be recorded under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), they said.

The ED had conducted searches at multiple premises linked to him in January. Some fresh searches were conducted over the last few days in Kolhapur and some other locations.

The money laundering case is linked to a probe related to alleged irregularities in the operations of some sugar mills based in the state that are connected to Mushrif, including the Sar Senapati Santaji Ghorpade Sugar Factory Ltd to which his three sons are linked.

Mushrif (68) is a Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MLA from the Kagal seat in Kolhapur. He is also the vice president of the party headed by Sharad Pawar.

BJP leader Kirit Somiaya had in 2021 alleged that the former rural development minister (Mushrif) indulged in corrupt practices by holding ‘benami’ entities through his family members and companies. The NCP had then dismissed these charges.

Land-for-jobs ‘scam’: Tejashwi Yadav skips CBI questioning Saturday, seeks fresh date

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav did not appear before the CBI for questioning on Saturday in the alleged land-for-jobs scam citing personal reasons, officials said.

The federal agency summoned RJD leader Yadav for questioning on Saturday after he had skipped the previous date on March 4, they said.

He has cited personal reasons for not attending the questioning session, following which the agency is likely to give him another date, they said.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had recently questioned RJD supremo Lalu Prasad and his wife Rabri Devi — former chief ministers of Bihar — in Delhi and Patna respectively.

The case pertains to people allegedly given employment in the railways in return for land parcels gifted or sold at cheap rates to the Yadav family and its associates, the officials said.

After the recent questioning of his parents, Tejashwi Yadav had alleged that investigation agencies were acting against political opponents of the ruling BJP at the Centre.

“It is an open secret that probe agencies are acting against political opponents of the BJP and helping those who agree to align with that party,” the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader had told reporters outside the Bihar assembly on Monday.

Yadav then said that Prasad, as the railway minister, had “no powers” to give employment in exchange for favours. He got support from the Congress and the AAP, which targeted the central government, alleging that the ruling BJP wanted to “suppress” the voice of the Opposition.

Bihar Chief Minister and JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar on Saturday hinted that he agreed with the contention of ally RJD that the recent crackdown on its president Lalu Prasad and his family members by the CBI and ED was “politically motivated”.

The CBI has filed a charge sheet in the land-for-jobs case against Prasad, Rabri Devi and 14 others under charges of criminal conspiracy and provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act, and all the accused have been summoned on March 15 by a special court, officials said.

The allegations have been denied by members of the Yadav family.

The officials said the fresh round of questioning is taking place as part of “further investigation” on the basis of fresh inputs gathered by it during its ongoing probe.

The CBI has alleged that during Lalu Prasad’s tenure as the railway minister in the UPA government from 2004 to 2009, favourite candidates were appointed in the railways in violation of norms and procedures.

No advertisement or public notice was issued for appointment but some residents of Patna were appointed as substitutes in different zonal railways located in Mumbai, Jabalpur, Kolkata, Jaipur and Hazipur, the CBI has alleged.

As a quid pro quo, the candidates, directly or through their immediate family members, allegedly sold land to the family members of Prasad at highly discounted rates, up to one-fourth to one-fifth of the prevailing market rates.

‘I pray you come out of jail soon,’ says Kejriwal ahead of Sisodia’s CBI questioning

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Ahead of Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia’s questioning by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday tweeted that the “whole party will welcome Sisodia when he comes out of jail”.

“I pray to God that you come out of jail soon, we will be eagerly waiting for you. We the parents, children and Delhities,” a line from Arvind Kejriwal’s tweet read.

Sisodia had earlier tweeted that he was going to join the probe of the CBI once again, and will fully cooperate with the agency.

“If I will spend a few months in jail, I don’t care. We are followers of Bhagat Singh. He (Bhagat Singh) even chose to be hanged,” Sisodia tweeted.

Reacting to his tweet, Kejriwal replied that they will be waiting for his release from jail.

“God is with you Manish. The wishes of lakhs of children and parents are with you. If you are going to jail for society and country, it will be a proud moment. You come out of jail, we will be waiting for you,” Kejriwal tweeted.

Sisodia first went to Rajghat for the prayer and then headed towards the CBI’s headquarters in Lodhi Colony.

Ahead of Sisodia’s CBI questioning, AAP leaders allege house arrest

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Ahead of the questioning of Delhi’s Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia in the excise policy scam by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday alleged that its leaders were being put under ‘house arrest’.

The Delhi Police have made elaborate security arrangements to stop all untoward incidents.

The AAP leaders, however, alleged that they “have been kept under house arrest by the police”.

The Delhi Police have put barricades at Lodhi Colony roads which leads to the CBI headquarters and no one is being allowed to go that side. Apart from this, the police have also put barricades outside Sisodia’s house and office and have deployed extra force to stop people going on that side.

At Lodhi Colony even the media was stopped by the police personnel posted over there.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has called it a tactic of the agencies to arrest Sisodia.

Sanjay Singh, the Rajya Sabha MP of AAP, has alleged that at the instructions of the Centre, agencies want to arrest Sisodia.

AAP MLA Atishi said that the BJP was trying to stop them, and that the allegations levelled on Sisodia were vague.

“Our leaders have been stopped at their house by the Delhi Police. Our leaders are in house arrest. We can’t come out of our houses. Delhi police are being misused by the Centre,” said Atishi.

Sisodia was earlier asked to appear before the CBI on February 19, but he sought a deferment by one week as he was giving final touches to Delhi’s budget.

The CBI accepted his request and issued him a second notice to join the probe on February 26.

He is likely to reach CBI headquarters by 11 a.m.

Delhi Excise policy case: Manish Sisodia urges CBI to defer questioning

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Sunday urged the CBI to defer his questioning till the last week of February in connection with the Delhi Excise Policy case as he is busy finalising the city budget.

Sisodia had been called for questioning on Sunday in connection with the case, nearly three months after a charge sheet was filed in the matter, officials said.

The AAP leader has not been named as an accused in the charge sheet as the investigation against him and other suspects is still going on.

“I have written to the CBI and asked for time for February last week as I am finalising the budget of Delhi and it is a crucial time. I have told them that I will come after the last week of February,” he told reporters.

It’s my duty as finance minister to present the budget on time and I have been working 24 hours for it. I have requested the CBI to allow me to come after the last week of February and answer all their questions, he told reporters.

The deputy chief minister in the Aam Aadmi Party government, who also held the charge of the Excise department, was earlier questioned on October 17 last year and his home and bank lockers were also searched in connection with the case.

Manish Sisodia called for questioning by CBI in Delhi Excise Policy case

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The CBI has called Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia for questioning in connection with the Delhi Excise Policy case nearly three months after filing the charge sheet in the case, officials said Saturday.

Sisodia, called on Sunday for questioning, has not been named as accused in the charge sheet, they said.

Arrested businessmen Vijay Nair and Abhishek Boinpally were among the seven accused named in the charge sheet.

It is alleged the Delhi government’s policy to grant licences to liquor traders favoured certain dealers who had allegedly paid bribes for it, a charge strongly refuted by the AAP.

“It was further alleged that irregularities were committed including in modifications in Excise Policy, extending undue favours to the licensees, waiver/reduction in licence fee, extension of L-1 license without approval etc.

“It was also alleged that illegal gains on count of these acts were diverted to concerned public servants by private parties by making false entries in their books of accounts,” the CBI spokesperson had said.

BJP slams AAP for questioning ED over excise policy case

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The BJP on Friday slammed the Aam Adami party and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for questioning the Enforcement Directorate’s supplementary chargesheet filed in connection with the excise policy case.

Addressing a press conference here, BJP leader and Union minister Meenakshi Lekhi said, “Anyone trying to question the ED is trying to question the apex court. The judiciary has upheld that ED’s job is to mitigate corruption in the country. The way the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is questioning the ED, it is becoming clear that Arvind Kejriwal is with those who indulge in corruption. Kejriwal does not want corruption to end in this country.”

She also alleged that the ED chargesheet makes it clear that “AAP has an alliance with unregulated businesses”.

“The ED has proved through its investigation that AAP was indulging in corruption under the guise of liquor policy. Along with this, the agency also revealed that Kejriwal and his deputy Manish Sisodia were also involved in this,” Lekhi said.

The court on Thursday took cognisance of the supplementary charge sheet filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) against five individuals and seven companies in connection with alleged irregularities in Delhi excise policy, which was withdrawn last year by the AAP government after a CBI probe was recommended into the matter.
