    E. Jean Carroll, under pointed questioning from Trump lawyer: ‘He raped me whether I screamed or not’

Carroll, a magazine writer, testified for a second day in her civil lawsuit against the former president. She is suing him for battery and defamation. He has said the alleged incident “never happened.”

The questioning got off to a terse start as Tacopina wished Carroll “good morning” twice before she would reply to him. “There ya go,” he said when she finally responded.

Carroll has said that she believes the alleged attack at Bergdorf Goodman occurred in the evening on a day between the fall of 1995 and the spring of 1996, and under questioning from her own lawyer on Wednesday, she added that she believes it took place on a Thursday. A former Bergdorf employee testified that Thursdays were the only nights of the week the luxury department store stayed open late.

But Carroll has repeatedly said she can’t recall exactly what date it happened.

On Thursday, Tacopina questioned why Carroll said only now that it was a Thursday and why neither she nor two friends she says she told contemporaneously can recall the date.

“I wish to heaven we could give you a date,” Carroll said. “I wish we could give you a date.”

Carroll testified that she always had a hunch the alleged attack occurred on a Thursday, but didn’t identify the day of the week in a book she wrote or in interviews because she wasn’t absolutely sure and “I tried to stick to the facts.”

Tacopina also questioned Carroll about a 2017 email referencing Trump between her and her friend Carol Martin, in which Martin wrote: “As soon as we are both well enuf to scheme, we must do our patriotic duty again …” Carroll responded: “TOTALLY!!! I have something special for you when we meet.”

When Carroll testified, as she had also done Wednesday, that she couldn’t recall what the email meant, Tacopina asked how she could remember details from the alleged rape from at least 27 years ago but couldn’t recall anything about a six-year-old email.

“Those are facts that I could never forget,” Carroll said of the alleged attack. “This is an email among probably hundreds of emails between Carol and I that I have no recollection of.”

Tacopina also pressed Carroll on why she went public with her story when she did, in 2019. Though Tacopina suggested she was using the claim to try to attract a book publisher, Carroll disputed that, saying she was instead prompted by revelations about film producer Harvey Weinstein’s sexual predation in The New York Times in 2017.

“When that happened, across the country women began telling their stories, and I was flummoxed [and thought], wait a minute, can we actually speak up and not be pummeled?” Carroll testified. “I thought, well this may be a way to change the culture of sexual violence. The light dawned. I thought, we can actually change things if we all tell our stories. And I thought by god, this may be the time.”

She continued: “It caused me to realize that staying silent does not work. It doesn’t work. If women speak up, we have a chance of limiting the harm that happens.”

Tacopina challenged Carroll on specific details of her account of the alleged rape.

He pressed her on her recollection that she didn’t see anyone in the department store as she and Trump rode the escalators to the sixth floor. “I was not looking for other people,” she said. “I was in a very engaging conversation with Donald Trump.”

He questioned why, as she has testified, she would have suggested Trump, a relatively tall and heavyset man, try on a skimpy women’s lace bodysuit they found on a counter in the lingerie department. “It just struck me as very funny,” she said. “If a man tells me to put on some lingerie, my natural instinct is to tell him to go put on the lingerie.”

Tacopina asked how she could have fought back against Trump while wearing 4-inch-heels, as she has said. “I can dance backwards and forwards in 4-inch-heels,” she replied.

And, in perhaps the most heated moment of the day, Tacopina questioned why she wouldn’t have screamed if she were being sexually assaulted.

“I’m not a screamer. You can’t beat up on me for not screaming,” she replied, growing agitated. “I’m not beating up on you. I’m asking you questions,” Tacopina said.

“Women don’t come forward. One of the reasons they don’t come forward is because they’re always asked, why didn’t you scream?” Carroll told the courtroom. Women are told, she said, “You better have a good excuse if you didn’t scream.”

At that point, Carroll raised her voice. “I’m telling you: He raped me whether I screamed or not,” she exclaimed.

“Do you need a minute, Ms. Carroll?” Tacopina asked.

“No,” she replied. “Go right on. I don’t need an excuse for not screaming.”

The trial will not meet on Friday. Carroll is expected to continue her testimony on Monday.

Poonch terror attack: Man who consumed poison after being called for police questioning dies

    [ad_1]

Poonch: A 50-year-old man who allegedly consumed poison on being called by police for questioning in connection with last week’s terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch died on Thursday, sparking protests by agitated locals, an official said.

Mukhtar Hussain Shah, a resident of Nar village in the district’s Mendhar tehsil, was disturbed as he was facing some domestic issues, he said, adding that he was not summoned as a suspect.

However, in a video message which went viral after his death, Shah alleged harassment. He also called for stern action against the real culprits behind the attack and a united fight against terrorism.

    MS Education Academy

Shah allegedly consumed poison on Tuesday evening and was admitted to the Government Medical College, Rajouri, where he died on Thursday morning, the official said.

Shah took the extreme step within hours of being asked to report for questioning in connection with the April 20 ambush by terrorists in the Bhata Dhurian forest that left five soldiers dead, he said.

The slain soldiers were from a Rashtriya Rifles unit deployed for counter-terror operations.

“He was not a suspect (in the terror attack case) but was called for questioning like most of the residents of his village that is located near the ambush site. We came to know he was facing domestic issues and was disturbed,” the official said.

Soon after Shah’s body reached near his house, his relatives and neighbours blocked the Jammu-Poonch national highway between Bhimber Gali and Bhata Dhurian to press for an inquiry into the circumstances leading to his death.

The protesters also raised slogans against the police and are being persuaded to disperse, the official said.

“I have no pressure from the Army, police or villagers. I am ending my life, even though it is wrong as per my religion. My family and I are being harassed and despite speaking the truth, nobody is listening to me,” Shah said in his nearly 10-minute video message.

Swearing by Allah and the holy book that he did not help the terrorists in carrying out the attack, he said 200 to 500 innocent villagers are facing harassment and torture for no fault of theirs.

“I am sad that my brothers from Rashtriya Rifles got martyred and I express my solidarity with their families. Humanity demands that no innocent’s blood should be shed and my family and villagers will protect our country and cooperate with (security) officers,” he said.

Shah said his family always supported India but the “same family is getting tortured. My request to the (security) officers is not to oppress innocents and if anyone is involved, let there be stern action against them”.

He said people are facing harassment because of someone else’s mistake. “I want to appeal to all Muslims that we should come together and support the Army so that the bloodshed ends forever and we are relieved of the torture,” he said.

“Let us come together with determination to stand up for peace. The government is providing everything to us but we are troubled because of some people. We have to expose them so that this thing is over for good,” he said.

Security forces have detained over 60 people as part of an ongoing anti-terrorist operation following the attack in Bhata Dhurian, a notorious infiltration route for terrorists from across the Line of Control because of its topography, dense forest cover and natural caves.

The massive search and cordon operation has been extended to many areas of both Poonch and nearby Rajouri but there has been no contact with the terrorists who fled the scene after the deadly ambush.

The official said a suspect has admitted to having provided logistic support to the terrorists for over two months and his further questioning is on.

Special forces are also engaged in the search operation that entered its eighth day on Thursday, officials said, adding that agencies are using drones, sniffer dogs and metal detectors in the operation.

Sources had earlier said that seven to eight terrorists in two groups are believed to have engineered the attack.

The terrorists reportedly hid under a culvert on the road from where they launched the attack on the truck which was carrying fruits, vegetables and other items to Sangiote village from the Bhimber Gali camp for iftar to be organised by the Rashtriya Rifles, according to initial investigation.

There were more than 50 bullet marks on the vehicle, which shows the intensity of the firing by the terrorists, the sources said.

The troops involved in the operation are exercising utmost caution as the terrorists may have planted improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in the densely forested area with deep gorges and caves, they said.

Experts from various agencies, including the National Security Guard (NSG) and the National Investigation Agency (NIA), have visited the site of the attack.

According to the officials, a sniper is believed to have targeted the Army vehicle from the front before his associates fired and lobbed grenades on the vehicle from opposite sides, apparently giving the troops no time to retaliate.

“The terrorists used steel core bullets that can penetrate an armoured shield,” the officials said, adding that the terrorists decamped with the soldiers’ service weapons.

Baltics blast China diplomat for questioning sovereignty of ex-Soviet states

    [ad_1]

united nations russia ukraine war 22929

The Baltic states of Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia are demanding an explanation from Beijing after China’s top envoy to France questioned the independence of former Soviet countries like Ukraine.

Lu Shaye, China’s ambassador to France, said in an interview on Friday with French television network LCI that former Soviet countries have no “effective status” in international law.

Asked whether Crimea belongs to Ukraine, Lu said that “it depends how you perceive the problem,” arguing that it was historically part of Russia and offered to Ukraine by former Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev.

“In international law, even these ex-Soviet Union countries do not have the status, the effective [status] in international law, because there is no international agreement to materialize their status as a sovereign country,” he said.

The comments sparked outrage among Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia — three former Soviet countries.

Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs said in a tweet that his ministry summoned “the authorized chargé d’affaires of the Chinese embassy in Riga on Monday to provide explanations. This step is coordinated with Lithuania and Estonia.”

He called the comments “completely unacceptable,” adding: “We expect explanation from the Chinese side and complete retraction of this statement.”

Margus Tsahkna, Estonia’s foreign minister, called the comments “false” and “a misinterpretation of history.”

Gabrielius Landsbergis, Lithuania’s foreign minister, shared the interview on Twitter with the comment: “If anyone is still wondering why the Baltic States don’t trust China to “broker peace in Ukraine,” here’s a Chinese ambassador arguing that Crimea is Russian and our countries’ borders have no legal basis.”

Kyiv also pushed back strongly against the ambassador’s comments.

“It is strange to hear an absurd version of the ‘history of Crimea’ from a representative of a country that is scrupulous about its thousand-year history,” Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s office, said in a tweet on Sunday. “If you want to be a major political player, do not parrot the propaganda of Russian outsiders.”

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell called the remarks “unacceptable” in a tweet on Sunday. “The EU can only suppose these declarations do not represent China’s official policy,” Borrell said.

France in a statement on Sunday stated its “full solidarity” with all the allied countries affected, which it said had acquired their independence “after decades of oppression,” according to Reuters. “On Ukraine specifically, it was internationally recognized within borders including Crimea in 1991 by the entire international community, including China,” a foreign ministry spokesperson was quoted as saying.

The foreign ministry spokesperson also called on China to clarify whether the ambassador’s statement reflects its position or not.

The row comes ahead of a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg on Monday, where relations with China are on the agenda.

Hyderabad: CBI continues questioning Kadapa MP in Viveka murder case

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) continued questioning Kadapa MP YS Avinash Reddy, his father Y. S. Bhaskar Reddy and their follower Uday Kumar Reddy for a third day on Friday in former minister Y. S. Vivekananda Reddy’s murder case.

While Avinash Reddy appeared before the CBI officials, his father and Uday continued to be grilled for the third day in CBI custody.

The duo was brought from Chanchalguda Jail to the CBI office. A court had sent them to six-day custody of CBI.

    MS Education Academy

The CBI officials were questioning the accused about the reasons for the murder, events of the day when the crime was committed and their movements on the day.

Avinash Reddy, the cousin of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, has to appear daily before the CBI till April 25, as per the direction of the Telangana High Court.

This was the fifth time that the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) MP appeared before the CBI.

The Telangana High Court had on Tuesday directed the CBI not to arrest Avinash Reddy till April 25.

In its interim order on the anticipatory bail petition of the MP, the court directed him to appear before the CBI daily till April 25.

The CBI had summoned Avinash Reddy for questioning on April 17 but the agency twice deferred the questioning due to hearing of his anticipatory bail petition.

The final order on the anticipatory bail plea will be delivered on April 25.

Bhaskar Reddy was arrested by the CBI on April 16 while his follower Uday Kumar Reddy was arrested on April 14 in Pulivendula town of Kadapa district in Andhra Pradesh. Both were brought to Hyderabad where a court sent them to judicial custody.

Vivekananda Reddy, brother of former chief minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, and uncle of Jagan Mohan Reddy, was murdered at his residence in Pulivendula on March 15, 2019, a few days before the elections.

The 68-year-old former state minister and former MP was alone at his house when unidentified persons barged in and killed him.

The CBI took over the investigation into the case in 2020 on the direction of Andhra Pradesh High Court while hearing a petition of Vivekananda Reddy’s daughter Suneetha Reddy, who raised suspicion about some relatives.

The Supreme Court transferred the case to Hyderabad in November last year after Suneetha Reddy raised doubts about getting a fair trial and investigation in Andhra Pradesh.

With the Supreme Court setting April 30 as the deadline for the CBI to complete its investigation, the agency has expedited the probe with the arrest of Bhaskar Reddy and Uday Kumar Reddy and questioning of Avinash Reddy.

Hyderabad: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) postponed questioning of Kadapa MP Y.S. Avinash Reddy in Y.S. Vivekananda Reddy murder case to Tuesday evening as his petition for anticipatory bail was being heard by the Telangana High Court.

The CBI, which had directed Avinash Reddy to appear before the CBI regional office at 10.30 a.m., postponed the hearing on the suggestion of the High Court.

The agency had earlier deferred the MP’s questioning on Monday in view of the hearing.

The High Court was hearing the arguments of counsels of Avinash Reddy, CBI and Vivekananda Reddy’s daughter Suneetha Reddy, who has impleaded in the case.

Avinash Reddy’s counsel pleaded to the court to direct the CBI not to arrest him. The agency submitted to the court that if necessary they will arrest Avinash Reddy.

The CBI counsel told the court that they suspect Avinash Reddy’s involvement in the murder conspiracy. The central agency believes that he played a key role in causing disappearance of evidence from the scene of the crime.

Suneetha Reddy has also filed an impleading petition in the High Court. She prayed to the court to hear her arguments before pronouncing its judgment.

The MP fears arrest in the case as his father Y.S. Bhaskar Reddy was arrested in the case on Sunday. In its petition seeking custody of Bhaskar Reddy, the CBI had named Avinash Reddy as co-accused.

Bhaskar Reddy, who was arrested in Pulivendula on Sunday, was brought to Hyderabad and produced before a magistrate, who remanded him to judicial custody for 14 days.
