  • Tata Electronics to become a key Apple player after Wistron’s iPhone plant acquisition

Tata Electronics to become a key Apple player after Wistron’s iPhone plant acquisition

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: As Apple doubles down on local manufacturing in India, Taiwan-based iPhone manufacturer Wistron is reportedly winding up its operations in the country and Tata Electronics is set to take over Wistron’s Karnataka factory and manufacture new Apple products.

The move will only give a fillip to the government’s local manufacturing dream, at a time when iPhone exports from the country surged to cross $5 billion (over Rs 40,000 crore) in FY23.

Wistron’s factory in Karnataka, that employs about 12,000 people, constitutes a major chunk of its business in the country.

    MS Education Academy

According to a report in Hindu Business Line, Wistron will be winding down its operations and is “likely to approach the National Company Law Tribunal and the Registrar of Companies to dissolve its India operations within the next year.”

The 150-year-old Tata Group has taken several measures to step up its business with Apple in the recent past.

Prabhu Ram, Head, Industry Intelligence Group, CMR, told IANS that the ‘Make in India’ initiative is set to gain even more momentum with the emergence of homegrown majors, such as Tata Electronics, “and the possibility of concurrent production of the Apple iPhone 15 and beyond.”

“As we progress, these initial steps will undoubtedly bolster India’s semiconductor ecosystem and strengthen its position in the global electronics value chains,” Ram added.

According to the report, Wistron is also waiting for some subsidy payments under the smartphone production-linked (PLI) scheme, before it winds down its India operations.

In FY23, Apple shipped more than 7 million iPhones and half a million iPads in the country, registering a 28 percent growth for iPhone shipments, according to initial estimates provided by market intelligence firm CMR.

As Apple doubles down on domestic manufacturing in India, the tech giant is likely to garner 6 percent market share in FY23-34, with selling more than 8 million iPhones in the country in the period.

In such a scenario, Tata Group is hopeful of India becoming an electronics manufacturing hub after the conglomerate succeeded in its efforts to take over Wistron’s iPhone assembly plant, according to earlier reports.

Russia ‘evacuates’ area around major nuclear plant in Ukraine

    [ad_1]

russia ukraine war nuclear plant 47976

Hundreds of civilians on Sunday fled Ukrainian territories under Russian control as part of an “evacuation” ahead of what’s feared to be intense fighting around an area home to Europe’s largest nuclear power plant.

A Ukrainian mayor slammed Moscow’s move as a cover-up operation to move troops, while the U.N. nuclear watchdog raised concerns over heavy fighting during a potential spring counteroffensive when Ukrainian forces are expected to seek to regain control of territories lost to Russian control.

Russian forces announced the evacuation for 18 settlements on Friday, and over the weekend, civilians have been rushing to leave those areas. The Ukrainian mayor of Melitopol, Ivan Fedorov, called it a “mad panic” as thousands of cars were stuck on the roads with five-hour waits, BBC reported.

Meanwhile, Russian paramilitary group Wagner’s boss on Sunday signaled that his men would continue to fight in the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut, a U-turn from an earlier threat — made in a video filmed alongside dead bodies — to withdraw from there as he criticized Moscow for failing to supply his group with the ammunition it needed.

Russian defense officials reportedly had reservations about over-assisting Yevgeny Prigozhin, whose Wagner mercenaries have played a key role in securing control over Ukraine’s eastern territories.

In Bakhmut, Ukraine has accused Russia of attacking the besieged city with phosphorus munitions.

Russia’s Federal Security Services claimed on Sunday they had foiled an attempt by Ukrainian intelligence to attack a military airfield in central Russia with drones stuffed with explosives. Kyiv has not responded to the accusation but previously attributed such actions to “false flag” operations or Russians opposed to President Vladimir Putin.

  • 29 firms file bids for Vizag Steel Plant, Telangana stays away

29 firms file bids for Vizag Steel Plant, Telangana stays away

    [ad_1]

Visakhapatnam: As many as 29 companies, including seven international players, have submitted bids for supply of raw materials and providing working capital to Visakhapatnam Steel Plant

The deadline for filing of Expression of Interest (EoI) invited by the Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd (RINL), the corporate entity of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP), ended Thursday.

The Telangana government, which had sent a team of Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) last week to VSP to study the feasibility of filing EoI, stayed away from the process.

    MS Education Academy

Sources in the VSP said both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh governments showed no interest in filing bids for the EoI.

Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao had sent a team of SCCL officials to the VSP to study the feasibility and the move had triggered curiosity in political circles.

While employees of the VSP, who have been protesting against the Centre’s decision to privatise the public sector undertaking, had welcomed the move, Andhra Pradesh’s ruling party YSR Congress had criticised the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) government of adopting double standards on the issue.

Andhra Pradesh Industry Minister Gudivada Amarnath had slammed BRS for opposing the privatisation of VSP and at the same time, planning to participate in the bidding.

Parties opposing privatisation of the VSP had also demanded that the YSRCP government of Andhra Pradesh to participate in the bidding to save the PSU.

As per the earlier schedule, the deadline for submitting bids for EoI was to end on April 15 but the RINL extended the last date by five days.

The RINL had invited EoI for supply of raw materials and (or) funding of working capital against the supply of finished steel products

Meanwhile, former CBI joint director V.V. Lakshmi Narayana, who has submitted a bid, asked the VSP management to clarify if they accept public donations to tide over the working capital crunch which led to the issuance of EoI.

The retired IPS officer submitted a letter to Chairman and Managing Director of VSP, informing him that he wished to request people to donate funds required for the working capital of the RINL in the form of public donations credited directly to the RINL bank account. He mentioned in the letter that recently people have contributed in the form of donations for the construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya.

“It was stated during discussions that to keep the plant running at full capacity of 7.3 MTPA an estimated amount of Rs 850 crore is required per month for a period of 4 months,” Lakshmi Narayana wrote.

Addressing a press conference along with Lakshmi Narayana on Wednesday, Praja Shanti Party President and evangelist K. A. Paul had said that he was ready to purchase the steel plant at five times more than the quoted price.

He said he was also fighting a legal battle against the privatisation of the VSP.

  • ‘Does KCR have moral right to speak on Vishakhapatnam steel plant?’ asks Kishan Reddy

‘Does KCR have moral right to speak on Vishakhapatnam steel plant?’ asks Kishan Reddy

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Union Minister for Culture, Tourism And Development Of North Eastern Region, G Kishan Reddy questioned whether Telangana Chief Minister K has any moral right to speak about the Vishakhapatnam steel plant privatisation issue.

While addressing the press conference on Sunday, G Kishan Reddy said, “KCR and his family have been talking a lot about the Vishakhapatnam steel plant in the past week. Singareni collaries are in loss. It is not getting funds from the Telangana government. When PM Modi came to Hyderabad to inaugurate development works in Telangana, the Kalvakuntla family and BRS party organised protests saying that Singareni is being privatised. On one side they are staging protests about privatisation and on another side, they say that they will buy the Vishakhapatnam steel plant”.

“As many industries in Telangana were shut down, the BRS party in its manifesto has promised that in 100 days they will open Nizam sugar factory. Now it has been 9 years, but not a single step has been taken by KCR in this direction. Does KCR have the moral right to speak about the Vishakhapatnam steel plant?” he said.

    MS Education Academy

He further stated the Telangana Government led by KCR has just one aim which is to criticize the central government from morning to evening.

“They have made their main aim to criticise the central government. Telangana people elected KCR for good governance and to fulfil the dreams of the Telangana people. However today, he has left Telangana to the air and the Chief Minister and his family in the name of BRS have made their main agenda to criticise the central government from morning to evening,” he said.

G Kishan Reddy also mentioned that the Telangana government has failed to deliver on the promises they had made in their manifesto during elections over the opening of industries in the state.

“The state government will set up a steel plant in Bayyaram even if the centre does not cooperate. The people are asking today, after 4 years, why are they not setting up the steel plant in Bayyaram? They said they will open many industries that were shut down, but did they open a single factory till today? KCR should answer this. The BRS manifesto also said that it will set up a revolving fund to open the small industries that were shut down. But to date, the revolving fund is still revolving in the air. As many industries belonging to the SC community are in trouble, there is around Rs.837 crores to be given. Many subsidies in the state for SC, ST, and others are not being given. Kalvakuntla family is now stating all other things to divert the people of Telangana from their failures” he said.

He also mentioned that CM KCR has no respect for the Indian constitution.

After 9 years, he (KCR) woke up and came out of his house on Ambedkar Jayanti. On Ambedkar Jayanti, all CMs would come to Tankbund and honour Ambedkar every year. But after becoming Chief Minister, KCR never came to the Ambedkar statue near Tankbund. KCR does not have any respect towards Ambedkar. He even said that the constitution written by Ambedkar is not relevant today and a new constitution should be written. He thinks that the Kalvakuntla constitution or the Nizam constitution should come.

There is a culture that on behalf of the Telangana people, Talambralu are given to the Bhadrachalam temple for Sri Rama Navami. But the Chief Minister today does not follow this culture. KCR hurts the sentiment of all the people. He even hurt the sentiments of Dalit people. He also said that he will make a Dalit as Chief Minister, give 3 acres of land to Dalits and also give Dalit Bandhu. The Dalit bandhu has become BRS Bandhu today. You (KCR) go for iftar parties, it is your wish but you do not come to Bhadrachalam,” he added.

Union Minister G Kishan Reddy also pointed out that in the Indian constitution, there is nowhere it has been mentioned that a Chief Minister and their family cannot be questioned by law enforcement agencies or the judiciary over scam allegations.

He further said, “Today in Delhi, Kejriwal is asking how can a Chief Minister been given notice. Ambedkar has given equal rights to everyone in the Indian Constitution. He did not give one right to Chief Minister for scams and another right to the common people. Whether Chief Minister or anyone else, it is the responsibility of the state police, High court, Supreme court, CBI and ED to enquire when there are allegations.

“The CM’s family should answer if there is anywhere in the Constitution that enquiry should not be done on the Chief Minister or Chief Minister’s family when there are allegations. Here also BRS party has set up a national party today to loot the country as it is not enough for them to loot Telangana. Union Government is not afraid of any of these atrocities,” he added.

  • BRS set to make political capital out of Vizag Steel Plant privatisation issue

BRS set to make political capital out of Vizag Steel Plant privatisation issue

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Looking to expand its presence to Andhra Pradesh, Telangana’s ruling party Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) appears to have struck a right chord by not only opposing privatisation of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP), but also expressing its intention to bid for the public sector undertaking.

The BRS move has put the emotive issue on the political discourse in the neighbouring state and set off tremors in the ruling YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) and main opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) as well. Both parties had pushed the issue to the backburner to remain in the good books of the BJP-led government at the Centre.

The series of developments over the last couple of weeks has made the issue of VSP privatisation and the plan of BRS to participate in the bidding a hot topic of debate in the political circles in Andhra Pradesh.

    MS Education Academy

While it is still unclear if Telangana government will submit Expression of Interest through Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) to acquire VSP, the BRS has succeeded in placing the issue on the political discourse, embarrassing both YSRCP and TDP who are coming under flak for not mounting pressure on the Centre to stop disinvestment process.

Political observers believe that irrespective of whether the disinvestment process goes ahead or not, the BRS has succeeded in projecting itself as a party which can fight to safeguard the interests of Andhra Pradesh.

“This is expected to help BRS get a foothold in Andhra Pradesh, where a majority of people still see it as a party responsible for the division of united Andhra Pradesh,” an observer said.

After changing its name from Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) to BRS a few months ago, this is the first time that the party appears to have made an effort to reach out to people in the neighbouring state.

BRS, which has been opposing privatisation of PSUs by the Modi government, had already demanded protection of VSP.

At a time when Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL), the corporate entity of VSP, set the bidding process in motion, BRS working president and Telangana’s industry minister K.T. Rama Rao came out with an open letter to the Centre.

KTR extended support to the employees of VSP who have been protesting against the Centre’s disinvestment plan for two years.

“Vizag steel is the right of Telugu people and the responsibility is on us to save the steel plant,” KTR had said.

In the open letter, KTR detailed the ‘evil’ plans of Modi government to hand over VSP to private players, the reasons behind the steel plant incurring losses, and the ways in which the plant could be revived.

The BRS leader claimed that the central government did not allocate captive iron ore mines to VSP and as a result the company is forced to spend up to 60 per cent of its production cost on raw material.

Stating that an Expression of Interest (EoI) notification was issued in the garb of mobilising funds for working capital and raw materials, KTR said that the Modi government was indirectly attempting to hand over the PSU to private entities through the notification.

Stating that VSP is not able to operate at its full capacity of 7.3 MTPA as the central government is not providing raw materials and capital, BRS working president said that the enterprise which is working at 50 per cent of the capacity is incurring the same production cost it incurs for working at 100 per cent capacity.

He said that if the Centre extends support, the enterprise can work at full capacity which will help it in generating profits. He said that VSP can compete with private companies if the central government provides loans to it on par with private companies and facilitates provision of capital through banks.

Maintaining that the Centre should stop conspiring to privatise a PSU which has Rs 1.5 lakh crore worth assets, KTR demanded that the Modi government should extend Rs 5,000 crore financial assistance to the steel plant.

Reacting to KTR’s letter, former joint director of the CBI, V.V. Lakshminarayana had suggested that either Andhra Pradesh or Telangana government should submit the EoI for VSP.

A few days later came the reports that the Telangana government intends to submit EoI through SCCL for the acquisition of VSP.

The Telangana government enjoys a majority stake in SCCL of 51 per cent while the Centre holds the remaining 49 per cent.

KTR later confirmed that Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao has sent a team of SCCL officials to VSP to examine the feasibility of submitting EoI.

Employees of VSP welcomed the interest being shown by Telangana in acquiring VSP while Jagan Mohan Reddy-led YSRCP government found itself on the backfoot. Andhra Pradesh industry minister Gudivada Amarnath issued a statement claiming that the state government remained opposed to privatisation of VSP.

Amarnath also targeted BRS for its contradictory stand. “One the one hand BRS saying it is opposed to privatisation of PSUs while on the other it is planning to participate in bidding,” he said.

Adding a new twist, KTR alleged that the Centre has gone back on its commitment to set up a steel plant at Bayyaram in Telangana and it is going ahead with privatisation of VSP as it handed over Bailadila iron ore mine which can be captive mine for both the plants to Adani group.

Around the same time, another Telangana minister Harish Rao slammed YSRCP and TDP for their silence over the VSP issue.

On April 13, Union Minister of State for Steel Faggan Singh Kulaste announced in Visakhapatnam that the Centre will not go ahead with the disinvestment plan. He told the media that the Centre will work to strengthen the plant.

BRS leaders claimed credit for the Centre’s announcement. KTR stated that it was aimed at diverting public attention from the allegation he made about Bailadila mining contract in Odisha awarded to the Adani Group.

However, within 24 hours the Centre took a U-turn. The Ministry of Steel issued a statement that there is no freeze on the disinvestment process of RINL.

The VSP employees intensified their protest demanding the Centre to stop disinvestment. However, the Centre remained unmoved.

The RINL extended the deadline for submission of bids for five days till April 20. It had invited bids to provide working capital, raw materials and purchase products of the VSP.

More than 20 companies including six international steel export companies have so far submitted their bids. Interestingly, former CBI officer V.V. Laxminararyana also submitted a bid on behalf of a private company. He plans to mobilise funds through crowdfunding.

The Telangana government has still not submitted its bid. While it remains unclear if it will do so, BRS flags have already come up in Visakhapatnam and its leaders in Andhra Pradesh are planning to contest all Assembly and Lok Sabha seats in the state in the 2024 elections.
