Army deployed in violence-hit Manipur, 7500 people shifted to safer places

    [ad_1]

Imphal: The Army and Assam Rifles were deployed to control the situation in Manipur where violence broke out during a tribal agitation, a defence spokesperson said on Thursday.

So far, 7,500 people were rescued by the forces from the violence-hit areas, and given shelter, he said, adding that more people are being shifted to safer places.

The Army and Assam Rifles were requisitioned last night, and along with the state police, the forces arrested the violence by the morning, the spokesperson said.

    MS Education Academy

“Flag marches are being conducted to keep the situation under control,” he said.

A ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organised by the All Tribal Student Union Manipur (ATSUM) in the ten hill districts of the state on Wednesday to protest the demand of non-tribal Meiteis, who account for 53 per cent of the state’s population, for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

The march was organised after the Manipur High Court asked the state government last month to send a recommendation to the Centre within four weeks on the demand for ST status by the Metei community.

During the march in Torbung area of Churachandpur district, an armed mob allegedly attacked people of the Meitei community, leading to retaliatory attacks in the valley districts, which escalated the violence throughout the state, according to police.

Several shops and houses were vandalised, and gutted in arson that lasted for more than three hours in Torbung, they said.

Urging people to maintain peace, Chief Minister N Biren Singh said, “Precious lives have been lost, besides damage of properties, which is very unfortunate.”

However, the details of the deaths were not immediately available.

Singh said the violence was the result of “misunderstanding” in the society.

“The state government is taking all steps to maintain the law and order situation and additional para-military forces have been requisitioned to protect the lives and properties of the people,” he said.

“Central and state forces have been directed to take strong action against individuals and groups who are indulging in violence,” he said.

The Chief Minister of neighbouring Mizoram, Zoramthanga, wrote to Singh, expressing concern over the violence.

“As the Chief Minister of Mizoram, a lifelong neighbour that has much in common with Manipur in terms of history and culture, I am deeply pained by the violence that has flared up in parts of your State and the underlying tension between the Meitei community and the tribals there,” he wrote in the letter.

Singh said he spoke to Zoramthanga on the phone and apprised him of the present situation.

Curfew has been imposed in non-tribal dominated Imphal West, Kakching, Thoubal, Jiribam and Bishnupur districts, and tribal-dominated Churachandpur, Kangpokpi and Tengnoupal districts.

Mobile internet services were suspended across the state.

In the Imphal valley, houses of Kuki tribals were ransacked in several areas, forcing them to flee, police said.

Over 500 residents of the Kuki-dominated Langol area in Imphal West fled their homes, and are currently staying at the CRPF camp at Lamphelpat, police said.

Some places of worship were also set on fire in the Imphal valley last night, they said.

Meanwhile, around 1,000 Meiteis of the tribal-dominated Churachandpur district fled to various areas of Bishnupur district, including Kwakta and Moirang, they said.

Over twenty houses were also burnt in Motbung area of Kangpokpi district, police said.

Violence was also reported from Moreh near the Myanmar border in Tengnoupal district.

Lawmakers of the valley have earlier openly endorsed the demand by some Meitei organisation for ST status, alarming communities who figure in the Scheduled Tribe list.

The Meiteis inhabit the valley, which accounts for about a tenth of the former princely state’s land area. They claim they are facing problems in view of “large scale illegal immigration by Myanmarese and Bangladeshis”.

The hill districts which account for much of the state’s land are inhabited mostly by tribals — including the Nagas and Kukis who are mainly Christians — and are protected from encroachment by various laws.

Now Google places Blue verified check marks on email senders

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: After Twitter, Google has now announced to display a Blue checkmark next to a sender’s name to verify their identity and minimise scams, which is free at the moment.

In 2021, the company first introduced Brand Indicators for Message Identification (BIMI) in Gmail, a feature that requires senders to use strong authentication and verify their brand logo in order to display a brand logo as an avatar in emails.

“Building upon that feature, users will now see a checkmark icon for senders that have adopted BIMI. This will help users identify messages from legitimate senders versus impersonators,” the company said in a statement.

    MS Education Academy

The feature has been rolled out and is available to all Google Workspace customers, as well as legacy G Suite Basic and Business customers, along with users with personal Google accounts.

Companies that have adopted BIMI will automatically receive the checkmark.

“Strong email authentication helps users and email security systems identify and stop spam, and also enables senders to leverage their brand trust,” said the tech giant.

“This increases confidence in email sources and gives readers an immersive experience, creating a better email ecosystem for everyone,” it added.

The Blue check mark comes to Google after Elon Musk removed all legacy Blue badges on the platform, and now charges Rs 900 a month (Rs 9,400 a year) from individual users for Blue ticks and $1,000 from organisations for Gold ticks.

Meta is also testing paid verification for Instagram and Facebook for $11.99 per month on web and $14.99 per month on mobile.

Its CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that a “Meta Verified” account will grant users a verified badge, increased visibility on the platforms, prioritised customer support, and more.

The feature was rolled out to Australia and New Zealand in February and will arrive in more countries “soon”.

  • Ramzan in Hyderabad: Explore these places for mouth-watering dishes!

Ramzan in Hyderabad: Explore these places for mouth-watering dishes!

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: As the holy month of Ramzan almost comes to an end, all roads leading to the Old City will only get busier. One of the main attractions of the month undoubtedly is the food scene, that is an absolute gastronomical experience for anyone who loves to eat.

From ‘Pathar Ka Gosht’ to the famed Haleem, and not to mention desserts, Ramzan in Hyderabad is truly a foodie paradise. Moreover, over the last five years, other areas in the city like Toli Chowki have also become quite well known for different things. With less than a week to go before Eid however, beating the mad rush Ramzan rush will also be difficult post Iftar, especially for those who are going to explore for the first time.

Hence, for the uninitiated, here are some of the top places for good food this Ramzan, which Siasat.com has tried and tested. As a precaution to avoid getting stuck in traffic jams, using the metro as much as possible is a good idea to reach the Old City as well in Hyderabad. So here goes:

    MS Education Academy

Pathar Ka Gosht – Al Farooj Sonu Kabab/Deewan Hotel

Pathar Ka Gosht has surprisingly turned out to become one of the much sought after dishes in Ramzan here over the last five years or more. Both the places, situated in the Old City, offer two different varieties of the same dish. While Sonu Kabab only serves mutton and chicken, Deewan Hotel (Ghasmandi) offers the beef variant. Both are a must try.

Sonu Kabab also serves Marag (creamy mutton borth), which is equally good, but very heavy. One is advised to share this with one or perhaps two others if possible.

Haleem – Hotel Nayaab, Subhan Bakery et all

No Ramzan is complete without Haleem. While the number of places selling the dish are umpteen, every year the court of public opinion decides which are the best or the top five. Based on at least three dozen places sampled so far, Hotel Nayaab’s special haleem and Subhan Bakery have come out on top.

Subhan Bakery has in fact surprised everyone with its Haleem, which is a little milder, but is a absolute flavour bomb as well. Nayaab’s special Haleem on the other hand comes topped with boiled eggs and some chicken on the other hand. But it also tastes equally good.

    Kebabs and Desserts

For Sheekh Kebab and other items like Chicken Tikka (etc) there are tons of options in the city. Aside from Sonu Kababs and Deewan Hotel, which are both great (both places only have stalls in Ramzan), one can also try Shahran Kebabs at Moazzam Jahi market.

    photo 6170276324288083545 y 1

Aside from that, one can also explore the line of kebab stalls on the Toli Chowki main road, adjoining Shah Ghouse, and also opposite it close to Imperial Hotel.

For desserts, if you’re in the Old City of Hyderabad, then Nazeer fruit juice centre is the place to go. The mango malai and mulberry malai are without a doubt its two best sellers (one outlet is at Purani haveli, and another close to the Chowmahalla palace). And in case you are close to the Charminar, then Mathwale Doodh Ghar has summer special lassi (place will be crowded)

For those in the other side of town, Nice fruit juice centre at Toli Chowki and Secunderabad also has similar offerings of fruit and cream.

Wearing face masks should be mandatory in public places: Health expert

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Amid the daily spike in COVID-19 cases in the country, a health expert has advised people to wear masks and follow Covid-appropriate behaviour.

Dr Sandeep Nayar, Pulmonologist, HOD, BLK Hospital said that masks should be made mandatory in crowded places.

“Amid a rise in COVID-19 cases, it is most important that people start wearing masks. One should wear a mask while going to any crowded place. Use double-layer masks in places like hospitals etc., as it is very effective in preventing infection,” Dr Nayar said, adding that the government should also issue advisories and should make wearing face masks mandatory in crowded places.

    MS Education Academy

“Corona cases are shooting up, patients with symptoms of sore throat, cough, cold, and fever are coming to us,” the health expert said. “We are advising the patients with such symptoms to have strict home isolation for seven days,” he added.

He said that the condition of the patients is not worrisome.

“Very few patients are requiring hospitalization. Only patients suffering from some serious illness are required to be admitted to the hospital. Patients suffering from cancer, or other serious diseases are at greater risk from this variant and need to be extensively taken care of,” Dr Nayar said.

The national capital on Wednesday reported 1,149 new coronavirus cases, marking a sharp jump from Tuesday when 980 cases were reported, according to a daily bulletin issued by the Delhi Health Department.

According to the Delhi Health Department, one death was reported in the national capital but the primary cause of death was not Covid. While the positivity rate stood at 23.8 per cent.

On Wednesday, India recorded 7,830 new coronavirus cases, marking a sharp jump from Tuesday when 5,675 cases were reported, according to data shared by the Union Health Ministry.

Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Monday advised citizens not to panic amid rising Covid cases, saying that they should maintain proper hygiene.

“Don’t panic. We have controlled it before, We will do it now also with your support. Covid cases are rising, but don’t panic. Maintain hygiene,” the statement said.

According to leading epidemiologists and virologists, the new Covid variant — XBB.1.16 — could be the reason behind the increase in cases.

“People in high-risk groups — pregnant ladies, those over the age of 60, those with chronic illnesses, and those with underlying health conditions, immunocompromised — face an increased risk of severe illness and death from Covid-19. We need to protect them,” read the statement.
