  • FSSAI allows labelling curd in regional names amid political controversy

FSSAI allows labelling curd in regional names amid political controversy

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Food safety regulator FSSAI on Thursday revised its order and allowed the use of regional names in printed labels of curd packets amid political controversy in Tamil Nadu.

Food Business Operators (FBOs) are now allowed to use the term ‘curd’ along with any other prevalent regional common name in brackets on the label. For example, ‘Curd (Dahi)’ or ‘Curd (Mosaru), ‘Curd (Zaamutdaud)’, ‘Curd (Thayir)’, ‘Curd (Perugu)’ can be used, the Food Safety Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) said in a statement.

The order has been revised following various representations received recently on the omission of the term ‘curd’ from the Standards of Fermented Milk Products and only the word ‘Dahi’ was mentioned.

The controversy erupted after the Tamil Nadu Cooperative Milk Producers Federation — which sells dairy products in brand name Aavin — declined to use the Hindi term ‘Dahi’ in its printed sachets as directed by FSSAI and said that it would only stick to the Tamil word ‘Thayir‘.

On Wednesday, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin decried the move as an attempt to “impose Hindi”. Dairy Development Minister SM Nasar said the government had received a letter asking it to implement the directive before August.

“The unabashed insistence of #HindiImposition have come to the extent of directing us to label even a curd packet in Hindi, relegating Tamil & Kannada in our own states. Such brazen disregard to our mother tongues will make sure those responsible are banished from South forever,” Stalin said in a tweet.

BJP state unit chief K Annamalai has said the notification was not in tandem with the Centre’s policy of promoting regional languages.

  • Delhi LG asks AAP govt to send names for labour welfare board, or explain why it can’t

Delhi LG asks AAP govt to send names for labour welfare board, or explain why it can’t

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: In yet another flashpoint between the two, Delhi LG VK Saxena has asked the AAP government to reconstitute the Labour Welfare Board appointing suitable members or communicate opinion on the matter so that it could be referred to the President, sources said.

No immediate reaction could be had from the AAP on the matter.

The LG and AAP government have had many rows in the past several months including the one over probes ordered by Saxena on complaints of corruption and the issue of sending teachers for training to Finland.

The labour welfare body remains without an executive board even after two years due to an impasse over eligibility criteria for appointment of the members.

“The LG has asked for the Board to be constituted with members who have domain expertise in labour welfare or send the file to him for expressing difference of opinion,” sources at LG office said.

The AAP government sat on a file meant for re-constitution of the Delhi Labour Welfare Board (DLWB) for more than 14 months, between June, 2021 and September, 2022 and finally sent the proposal with names for approval of the Lt Governor on September 12, 2022, they claimed.

The names proposed by the then labour minister, Manish Sisodia, and approved by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal were not as per the criteria for selection of such members, sources at LG Office said.

The members nominated to the Board, instead of being domain experts in labour welfare, were picked from among vaccination camp organisers, RWA presidents and individuals distributing food during Covid pandemic, they claimed.

The Lt Governor returned the file to the Chief Minister on November 21, 2022, with observations advising the Labour department to submit a panel of names for appointment after a thorough background check on their suitability and experience in related fields.

“Members of this Board perform important functions of welfare of labourers and therefore, it is important that such members must possess sufficient experience in the field of labour welfare.

“Such nominated members must demonstrate skill and expertise which reveal their capabilities to contribute to the cause of labour welfare,” the LG had observed.

In the proposed list, most of the nominees, especially nine of the 17 do not have appropriate experience or domain knowledge to effectively contribute for welfare activities and also it is difficult to ascertain if nominations of others are commensurate with the spirit of the law, the LG said in a note.

He had also suggested creation of a search committee for appointment of the members.

In its reply, the Delhi government submitted the file back on January 7, 2023, asking the LG to either agree to the names suggested by it or invoke difference of opinion as prescribed under Article 239AA(4) and Rule 49 and 50 of the Transaction of Business Rules, claimed the sources.

The LG office again returned the file to the Chief Minister’s office, on February 9, 2023, noting that in case the Chief Minister had different views on the issue, the matter may be referred to the Council of Ministers for its consideration.

He also expressed disagreement with the Labour Minister’s view, approved by the CM, that in the absence of any prescribed qualification for the members, the proposal of the government must be agreed upon.

The file was again submitted to the LG on February 22 this year, with the observation that as per amended Rule 49 of ToBR the issue was discussed by the LG with the Labour minister within a statutory time limit of 15 days.

“Thus, this case is legally time barred for Hon’ble LG to express any difference of opinion,” read the CM’s note .

The file has once again been returned to the CMO for the matter to be brought before the Council of Ministers, if the CM and the Labour minister do not agree with the LG over the issue, sources added.

  • Names of many Muslim voters in a Bengaluru constituency removed

Names of many Muslim voters in a Bengaluru constituency removed

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Names of 9,159 Muslim voters in the Shivajinagar constituency in Bengaluru have been removed from the voters’ list. This removal is done based on a complaint filed by a private agency named Chilume which has links to the BJP. The complaint was filed on November 16, 2022, and the action was taken by the Election commission in January 2023.

It is reported that the private agency, Chilume prepared a list of 26,000 voters after collecting the data illegally since October 2022 for the Shivajinagar constituency. The complaint filed to the Election Commission alleged that 26,000 fake voters are identified in the Shivajinagar constituency who have either shifted from that place or are dead.

The Election Commission published the final electoral roll for the Shivajinagar constituency on January 15, 2023. This is when the BJP private agency swung into action with its voters list some eight days after the electoral roll was published. The private agency of the BJP went to the Election Commission demanding that the 26,000 names mentioned in the EC list should be removed.

The EC officials immediately cross-checked all the 26,000 names and found that 9,159 had either shifted out of their old home addresses or were dead. Accordingly, EC asked the suspected voters to appear before the authorities.

However, media reports say the suspected names that were deleted were all wrong and it verified with those who received the notices found them to be alive and living at the same old addresses.

Congress MLA Rizwan Arshad has reportedly said, “Voters are getting harassed. Many people replied to the first notice, despite the that they have been issued a second notice asking them to appear before the EC. This process is to tire people out.. I don’t know why Shivajinagar was chosen for this experiment. Maybe because this is a safe seat for the Congress, the BJP wants to see if deletion can help them win the election.”

Further, the MLA asked, “how a private group can do door-to-door electoral roll calls and create a voter list of its own is something that is a mystery? The alarming part is the quick response of the election commission to such a complaint.

The move is being seen as a violation of Election Commission rules issued on September 13, 2021, that says no deletion to the electoral rolls can be done six months prior to the end of the term of the Assembly. (Karnataka assembly term ends in the last week of May).

Rules mandate that Form 7 has to be filled if anyone wants to raise an objection and delete a name from the existing electoral roll. Did the BJP fill 26,000 Form 7s? The Electoral Registration Office confirmed that the BJP did not fill any Form 7. If they didn’t, why did the CEO’s office accept their complaint?

Shivajinagar, which is in the heart of Bengaluru, has around 1.91 lakh voters, 40% of whom are Muslims. The constituency has been represented by a Congress MLA since 2008.

Saudi Arabia names first female astronaut to send into space

    [ad_1]

In its endeavor to build national capabilities in the field of manned space flights, and to take advantage of the promising opportunities offered by the space sector and its industries globally, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), on Sunday, revealed the name of the first female astronaut to send to the International Space Station (ISS) during the second quarter of the year 2023.

First Saudi female astronaut, Rayyanah Barnawi, and a male astronaut, Ali AlQarni, will join the crew of the AX-2 space mission, which is scheduled to launch from the United States, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.

“Every journey has its pioneers and every mission has its heroes,” Saudi Space Commission said on Twitter.

Two other astronauts, Mariam Firdous and Ali Al-Ghamdi, will train in the Saudi human spaceflight program for all mission requirements.

This step also aims to contribute to scientific research that is in the interest of serving humanity in a number of priority areas such as health, sustainability and space technology.

There is a growing interest in space exploration on the part of other Gulf countries. In December 2022, Emirati space explorer “Rashid” set off towards the moon on a Japanese spacecraft on a 5-month journey.
