Mumbai: In a chilling incident, a 23-year-old Mumbai man, while in a heavily drunken state, allegedly beat his father to death, police officials said here on Tuesday.

According to Joint Police Commissioner Satyanarayan Choudhary, on Sunday, following a tip-off, a mobile police van discovered an unidentified person lying in a seriously injured condition near Hariyali village in the Indira Nagar slums in Vikhroli east, a north-east Mumbai suburb.

The mobile police team immediately rushed the person to the BMC’s Rajawadi Hospital where he was pronounced dead, and the police started investigations.

The man’s identity was subsequently established as Sanjay P. Salve, 52, said the police.

According to a complaint lodged by the deceased’s elder sister, Nanda Salve, 53, her nephew Rahul, who was in a heavily inebriated condition, had allegedly assaulted his father brutally after a brawl on Sunday.

The motives behind Rahul’s fatal attack on his elderly father is not clear, but based on his aunt’s complaint, he has been arrested on charges of murder.

The accused was produced before a court which sent him to police custody till April 6, and further probe is on, said Choudhary.

  • Vaccine tycoon Poonawala longing for 8 years to occupy his ‘palatial’ Mumbai home

Vaccine tycoon Poonawala longing for 8 years to occupy his ‘palatial’ Mumbai home

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Billionaire vaccines tycoon Cyrus Poonawala is keen to move into his palatial Mumbai home which has been stuck in bureaucratic hassles for the past eight years.

As per certain media reports, Poonawala, 81, the Chairman of Serum Institute of India Ltd (SII) had bought the property from the US Government, which was running its Mumbai Consulate there till 2011.

The US government had purchased it in 1957 on a 999-year lease from the last ruler of Wankaner, Maharana Raj Shri Pratapsinhji Saheb of the Jhala Dynasty.

    MS Education Academy

Wankaner was a princely state (located in modern-day Gujarat, near Morbi) founded in 1620, and the last Maharana built his luxurious royal Mumbai home in 1933.

The sprawling property spread over two acres on the Arabian Sea shore with a built-up area of around 50,000 sq. feet, known as Wankaner House, was renamed ‘Lincoln House’, and the US Consulate functioned there till November 2011.

A few years after the Mumbai mission moved to a bigger premises in the Bandra Kurla Complex, the US government and Poonawala struck a deal of around Rs 750 crore for the property in the posh Breach Candy area of south Mumbai.

Later, it transpired that the ownership of the land was unclear with both the Maharashtra government and the Ministry of Defence staking claim, and the deal was kept on hold, and the Indian and US governments are attempting to iron out the differences.

A miffed Poonawala told a foreign publication that “the government of India is not providing any rationale for holding it up”, and suspects that it doesn’t want the huge amount (around $120 million) to go to the US.

Although officials are not ready to comment, the green signal is probably stuck owing to a technicality pertaining to the notice of the sale within a specified time-frame on the transfer of the lease rights.

Until the deal is cleared – probably by the PMO – Poonawala will continue to live in his Pune home and long to possess and occupy the palatial house worth a fortune in Mumbai.

Swedish national arrested in Mumbai for molesting IndiGo cabin crew

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: A Sweden national was arrested in Mumbai for allegedly molesting a cabin crew member onboard an IndiGo flight from Bangkok, officials said on Saturday.

The accused has been identified as, Klas Erik Harald Jonasm, 63, police said.

The Swedish national was handed over to Mumbai police by the airline staff when the flight landed at Mumbai Airport on Thursday, officials said.

The accused was arrested on Thursday after a complaint by IndiGo Airlines and was produced in the Andheri court on Friday and granted bail the same day, officials said.

A chargesheet was filed by the police, in Andheri court on Friday.

Police said they have started further investigations into the case.

This is the 8th unruly airline passenger arrested in India in the past three months, according to officials.

On March 23, Mumbai’s Sahar Police booked two IndiGo flyers travelling from Dubai to Mumbai for allegedly being drunk and misbehaving with the crew, police said earlier in the month.

The arrested passengers were identified as Dattatreya Bapardekar and John George D’Souza.

“Two Indigo flyers have been booked under section 336 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) & sections 21,22 and 25 of Aircraft rules for being drunk & misbehaving with the crew. Both were arrested formally but as the sections were bailable, they were granted bail from the police station itself”, DCP Dixit Gedam, Mumbai Police told ANI earlier in the month.

According to the police, the incident occurred on March 22. It is alleged that passengers John George D’Souza and Dattatreya Anand Bapardekar started drinking after the flight took off from Dubai on an Indigo flight from Dubai to Mumbai. When the cabin crew found this, they informed them about the ban on drinking alcohol inside the flight. But both the accused got infuriated and stood up from their seat and started walking inside the flight drunk.

  • Mumbai: 21 arrested over stone pelting at Ram Navami procession in Malvanib

Mumbai: 21 arrested over stone pelting at Ram Navami procession in Malvanib

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: As many as 21 persons have been arrested so far in connection with the stone pelting at a Ram Navami procession in suburban Malad (West), police said on Friday.

The tensions on Thursday night began following disputes over the loud DJ music being played in the procession as it was passing through the vicinity of mosques in Malvani area, a police official said.

A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered against nearly 300 identified and unidentified persons at the Malvani police station, he said.

As per the FIR, more than 6,000 persons had participated in the Ram Navami procession organised by the Bajrang Dal, Vishwa Hindu Parishad and other Hindu organizations.

The procession began from Ram Janki temple late in the afternoon.

Around 7.25 pm, as it was moving towards Jama Masjid, around 100 to 150 people objected to the high volume of music as namaz was going on in the mosque, said a local police official.

As the volume of music was not lowered, there was some slogan-shouting and one of the men who had objected to loud music allegedly hurled a stone at the procession and it hit a participant, he added.

Police personnel deputed for security along the route immediately took the man who had thrown the stone into custody, he said.

As per the FIR, when the procession was near the Ali Hazrat mosque around 8.45 pm, a mob of 200 to 250 persons began to pelt stones.

As police tried to bring the situation under control, some people in the mob hurled stones at them and manhandled some police personnel, the FIR said.

Earlier, police had said that there was a “clash” between the procession participants and the other group, but the FIR did not mention it.

Additional police force was called in and police used “mild force” to disperse people from both sides, said a senior official.

Members of right-wing organisations gathered outside Malvani police station late at night demanding action against those who pelted stones.

Senior police officers and local politicians reached the spot and the situation was brought under control, the official added.

The FIR was registered under Indian Penal Code sections 353 (assault or use of criminal force to deter a public servant from discharge of his duty), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means), 145 (unlawful assembly), 147 (rioting ) and relevant sections of the Maharashtra Police Act.

“The miscreants who tried to create tension during the procession are being identified with the help of drone and CCTV footage and action is being taken against them,” Deputy Commissioner of Police Ajay Bansal told reporters.

More arrests are likely, he added.

A large number of police personnel were deployed in the area and the situation was under control, Bansal said, while appealing people to maintain peace and not to believe rumours.
