Alia made her grand debut at the Met Gala 2023 last week only. For her debut, Alia opted for a pristine white gown with a billowing silhouette from the shelves of Prabal Gurung.

“Met Gala — Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty…I have always been fascinated by the iconic Chanel brides. Season after season, the genius of Karl Lagerfeld shone through in the most innovative and awe-inspiring couture. My look tonight was inspired from this and in particular by supermodel Claudia Schiffer’s 1992 Chanel bridal look.. I wanted to do something that felt authentic (hello, pearls!) and proudly made in India. The embroidery, made with a 100,000 pearls is a labour of love by @prabalgurung. I’m so proud to wear you for my first Met,” she shared the details of the dress.

“A girl can never have too many pearls… and the right accessories to complement the look which in our case translated to the bow of pearls on my hair. Oh, and it’s white, for my Choup-ED,” Alia added.

On the work front, she will rekindle her on-screen romance with Ranveer Singh in Karan Johar’s directorial ‘Rocky Aur Rani ki Prem Kahani.’

  • Big Relief: Mother Dairy Cuts MRP Of Dhara Cooking Oils- Check News Rates Here – Kashmir News

    [ad_1]

Mother Dairy has cut maximum retail prices (MRP) of its edible oils, sold under Dhara brand, by Rs 15-20 per litre with immediate effect in line with the reduction in global prices.

The stock with revised MRP is expected to hit the market next week.

The reduction comes following the food ministry’s direction to edible oil industry body SEA regarding the need for downward revision of the MRP of cooking oils.

“The MRP of Dhara edible oils are being reduced by Rs 15-20 per litre across variants with immediate effect. This reduction is largely being done in variants such as soyabean oil, ricebran oil, sunflower oil and groundnut oil, on account of reduced impact of international markets and ease in availability of domestic crop,” Mother Dairy spokesperson said.

The MRP of Dhara refined soyabean oil (1 litre poly pack) has been reduced to Rs 150 from Rs 170, while the MRP of Dhara refined rice bran oil will now be Rs 170 per litre as against Rs 190 per litre earlier.

The company has revised the MRP of Dhara refined sunflower oil to Rs 160 from Rs 175 per litre.

The MRP of Dhara groundnut oil has been cut to Rs 240 from Rs 255 per litre.

Edible oil industry body Solvent Extractors’ Association of India (SEA) had advised its members to reduce MRP in line with the falling prices of edible oils.

It has sought the details of reduction in MRP during the last three months so that the same could be informed to the food ministry.

Mother Dairy manufactures, markets and sells milk and milk products, including cultured products, ice cream, paneer and ghee under the ‘Mother Dairy’ brand.

The company sells edible oils under the ‘Dhara’ brand and fresh fruits & vegetables, frozen vegetables & snacks, unpolished pulses, pulps & concentrates, etc., under the ‘Safal’ brand.

In Delhi-NCR, it has hundreds of milk booths as well as Safal retail outlets.

“The Department of Food and Public Distribution regularly review the price of edible oil in country. International prices has been sharply reduced in the last 6 months and particularly in last 60 days, however local prices, in spite of bumper crops of groundnut, soyabean and mustard, not declined in line with the International market,” SEA had said.

“While most of the brands have reduced prices in the past but still the prevailing MRP of the packed edible oil in the market is not in line with the current prices as in international market, i.e. the prices of edible oil (MRP) in domestic market seems to be on higher side considering the prevailing market scenario,” the association said.

The department had advised SEA to inform members to reduce MRP on edible oils and pass on the benefits to consumer.(PTI)

Drug abuse is already an epidemic. Earlier the drug abusers used to die silent death by overdose. Now, the resource-deficit addicts have started turning against their own relations, reports Raashid Andrabi

Cover Page drug addiction ticking bomb by Malik Kaisar @ mk creations Srinagar scaled e1674323953937
With the hospitals getting an unprecedented number of addicts, some with overdose, a new pandemic is in progress in Kashmir. KL Illustraition: Malik Kaisar

That the instant and unexplained deaths of young men could be the outcome of a drug overdose is the old story. The new story is more tragic. Desperate to have drugs and the means to manage the costs can push the addicts to kill their own family members, even the closest relations.

Kashmir has actually landed into a state of fear and disbelief, as a series of heinous crimes rocked the Vale. In a spate of horrific incidents,  family members turned on each other. The tragedy is that a son was held responsible for killing his mother.

Data that the government has put in the public domain suggest nearly 10 lakh people in Jammu and Kashmir are victims of drug abuse. Cannabis addiction affects at least 1.44 lakh drug abusers, while opioid addiction is prevalent among 5.34 lakh men and 8,000 women, and sedative addiction among 1.6 lakh men and 8,000 women. Experts believe that these figures could be much lower than the actual numbers, as many drug users are hesitant to seek medical care or open up about their addiction due to fear of social ostracism.

Despite efforts to combat the epidemic, the problem seems to be getting worse. In 2022, a report by the National Drug Dependence Treatment Centre of AIIMS estimated the total number of drug abusers in Jammu and Kashmir at over 6 lakh, placing the erstwhile State fifth in the country among all States and Union Territories. Another study, conducted in December 2022, ranked Kashmir second among the States and Union Territories in the country for drug abuse, ahead of Punjab.

The impact of drug addiction is evident across the region, with reports of violence, crime, and broken families. The recent spate of homicides has only served to highlight the devastating consequences of this epidemic. Families are torn apart, and communities are left in fear and disbelief, as the people of Kashmir struggle to come to terms with the reality of the situation.

    Ashmuqam Murders

The air was thick with tension as the news of the heinous crime spread like wildfire through the narrow alleys of Anantnag. Javaid Ahmad Rather, a successful baker, had committed an unforgivable act of violence against his own family and neighbours.

    Ashmuqam
    Ashmuqam: The shrine area.

On a chilly Friday morning in December 2022, the small town of Ashmuqam was abuzz with rumours of an incident involving one of its residents. Rather, a man known for his excessive drinking and drug use had apparently lost his sanity under the influence of a faith healer. The news quickly spread like wildfire, and people started to speculate about what could have possibly driven him to such madness.

Some claimed that the faith healer had given him powerful drugs, while others believed that he had cast a spell on him.

Rather’s father vehemently denied these accusations, insisting that his son was not a drug addict or a drunkard. He spoke of Rather’s success as a businessman, with three traditional bakery shops in Pahalgam that were managed by ten people. However, there was no denying the horror of what had occurred.

Rather’s father had just returned from Pahalgam, where he had gone to bring his son back home. Rather’s father claimed that the faith healer had asked them to sacrifice a sheep, but he did not know what had made his son lose control.

It started with Rather hitting his father on the head, sending him reeling to the ground. Rather then took his mother, Hafiza Begum, on the pretext of visiting a shrine. But instead of seeking blessings, he attacked her with a cane, causing her to die on the spot. The blood-curdling screams of Rather’s mother echoed through the quiet streets, alerting the neighbours who rushed to help.

But the horror had only just begun. Rather, now completely out of control, began targeting everyone in the area. Mohammad Amin Shah and Ghulam Nabi Khadim, two of Rather’s neighbours, were caught in his path of destruction and were brutally killed.

As the town’s gossip mill went into overdrive, the local police were called in to investigate the incident. They managed to apprehend Rather, but not before he had injured six other people. Shockingly, it was later revealed that Rather had been detained by the police just a day before the incident when he was seen roaming naked in the market carrying a bottle of liquor.

    A Mother’s Murder

Anantnag’s Kehribal village was plunged into darkness when a shocking incident came to light. In what can only be described as a heinous crime, a 45-year-old woman named Razia Akther was brutally murdered by her own son and his accomplice, all for the sake of money. The victim Razia was hit on the head with a stone by her own son, Aaqib, and his accomplice Adil. The duo had allegedly hatched a conspiracy to steal money from Razia, but it ended up in a brutal murder.

The initial incident was thought to be an accidental fall from a concrete slab, but police investigations revealed that it was indeed a murder.

Drugs-destructionOn October 21, details revealed police recovered the body of Razia and rushed her to GMC Anantnag for treatment, but the doctors declared her brought dead. The prolonged matrimonial dispute and various allegations and counter-allegations in societal circles made the police suspect foul play. They initiated proceedings under section 174 CRPC and took the body into possession for medico-legal formalities.

In a quick follow-up to the murder, it was Aqib, the son, holding the microphone and telling on camera the details of how his grandparents actually killed his mother. With emotional outbursts, he had successfully managed to hoodwink society.

As the cops started investigating the case, the cat was out of the bag. Police found Aqib and Adil responsible for the murder. They had hatched a criminal conspiracy to snatch money from the deceased. As she refused to yield, Aqib smashed his mother and punched her. Later, they tried to portray the murder as an accidental death and even created a fake crime scene.

Both accused fled away from the spot along with the snatched money. They even got the victim admitted to the hospital with the assistance of other family members. However, during further investigation, a disclosure memo was prepared, and the weapon of offence was recovered. An FIR has been registered under relevant sections of IPC.

    The Sopore Shocker

The Sopore town was jolted by a horrific incident on a chilly March morning.

On March 30, Showkat Ahmad Ganai, a 32-year-old resident of Dangerpora village in Sopore, reportedly strangled his 70-year-old mother, Aisha Begum. A son, consumed by the dark grip of drug addiction, committed the ultimate betrayal by snuffing out the life of his own mother. The community is reeling from the shock of yet another senseless murder, which has left many questioning the corrosive impact of drugs on society and the lengths to which addiction can drive a person to commit the most heinous of crimes.

    Sopore aerial view
Sopore: An aerial view. It is the bridge that connects the two parts of Sopore. Image: Junaid Bhat

Speaking to the media, Showkat’s devastated sister said the family had always tried to steer Showkat away from his wrongdoings and get him on the right track. They had even scolded him when he was heading in the wrong direction, but in recent times, he had turned his life around, working hard and earning a good livelihood.

Showkat’s sister is still in disbelief about what could have happened to him and that he would resort to killing his own mother. She said that her brother had been very humble towards everyone around him, and everything seemed to be going fine until this incident occurred.

The killer’s sister is also grappling with the shock and cannot come to terms with what has happened. She expressed her wish that the police should catch Showkat and bring him to face justice. She went on to say that she wants to see him hanged in front of her, as that is the only justice that she can think of.

    Larger Impact

With drug abuse as rampant as an epidemic, according to the police, a lot of crimes could be attributed to the addicts, who are always cash-starved. With some of them turning towards their family members, there is a possibility that they can kill others too.

While the authorities have been taking action against the suppliers – mostly the retailers, and making arrests on a daily basis, there is a requirement for snapping the supply chain. Officials have been consistently saying that the supplies are sourced from across the Line of Control (LoC) and various gangs including members of the security grid, have been arrested. However, the drug bazaar is still making a lot of money and on a daily basis; hundreds of families are getting devastated. Can Kashmir’s efficient security grid trace and squeeze the tracks that keep the drug supplies on?

Cairo: A horrific crime shook the Egyptian street on Friday, as a mother killed her 5-year-old son, then cooked his corpse and ate parts of his head, local media reported.

A woman identified as 29-year-old Hanaa, separated from her husband for about 3 years, had been living alone with her son in her own house in the village belonging to the Faqous Center in Sharkia Governorate.

According to Egyptian Daily Cairo 24, Hanaa was arrested by the police after her son’s body parts were found in buckets at her home.

The accused confirmed in the investigations that she did not intend to kill her child, and said that she “tried to eat his head so that he would not leave her forever”.

The security source familiar with the investigations revealed to Masrawy that the mother suffers from a mental illness.

It is reported that the mother was referred to the Public Prosecution Office, which requested investigations by the security services about the incident, the burial of the remainder of the child’s body, and the assignment of a medical committee to conduct a medical examination on the mother.

Dubai mother sentenced to life for torturing, drowning 10-yr-old daughter

    [ad_1]

Abu Dhabi: A Dubai Criminal Court has sentenced a Russian mother to life in jail for torturing her 10-year-old daughter to death, local media reported.

The incident occurred on June 22, 2023, in The Villa area in Dubai, where the mother called an ambulance, claiming that her daughter had drowned in the bathtub.

However, after investigation, the police discovered that the child had bruises and burns on her body.

    MS Education Academy

The police investigated and questioned the mother who lived with the victim, a two-year-old son, and a domestic worker, who left the country on the same day of the crime.

As per a report by Gulf News, during questioning, the mother denied her involvement in the crime and blamed the domestic worker for her daughter’s death.

After an arrest warrant was issued against the worker, the authorities arrested the servant at his country’s airport with the help of Interpol. However, he denied any involvement in the crime when questioned.

He pins the crime on the mother, indicating that he noticed that the mother deliberately abused her daughter and tortured her continuously.

A day before the crime, the servant saw the mother locking her daughter in her room.

As per media reports, the next morning, when he went to wake her up for school, he found her missing from the bedroom.

When he heard the sound of water coming from the bathroom, he found the girl lying in the tub. He immediately informed the mother of the girl’s condition but was shocked by her calm reaction. Fearing that he would be accused of the crime, he left for his home country.

After the servant testified, the mother admitted to physically harming her daughter and drowning her in the bathtub.

The criminal court sentenced her to life imprisonment.

It is reported that the servant was referred to the Criminal Court, which sentenced him to one month in prison for not reporting a crime.

  • I once argued fiercely for child-free spaces. As a mother, I still believe in their sanctity | Rhiannon Lucy Cosslett

I once argued fiercely for child-free spaces. As a mother, I still believe in their sanctity | Rhiannon Lucy Cosslett

    [ad_1]

This morning I did something that I rarely do, for fear of inducing a full-body cringe the likes of which I have not experienced since, aged 10, I jumped on my dad’s back in the local swimming pool only to discover that it wasn’t him: I read one of my old columns. Written nearly a decade ago under the headline “I’ll drink to child-free pubs and cafes”, my twentysomething self grumbles about the presence of kids in adult spaces.

Fast forward and I have a one-year-old who regards my local pub as an extension of his living room. I have sung him to sleep in the beer garden and breastfed him, rosé in hand, while sharing birth stories. Sometimes, I have looked up and seen an exclusion zone of empty tables around where we are sitting. Time makes hypocrites of us all.

There has been a lot of discussion about child-free spaces recently, with two reported plane incidents going viral. The first involved a pregnant woman being asked by cabin crew to clear up her children’s popcorn crumbs, and the second, a grown man’s tantrum about the presence of a crying baby on his flight, during which, after his fellow passengers told him he was shouting, he replied with the immortal: “So is the baby! Did that motherfucker pay extra to yell?”

Both provoked fierce debate online that can be boiled down to, on the one hand, “Crying babies are annoying and should not be in public. Being unable to soothe them is poor parenting”, v “Children and babies are a part of society and they also cry. No one wants them to stop crying more than their own parents.” Although these factions could broadly be categorised along the lines of “childfree/childless” people and “childed” people (a word I dislike, but one that is becoming increasingly popular), many of us could see both sides.

I couldn’t not laugh at the man’s furious logic, because I have felt that, before and after becoming a parent. But motherhood has elevated my (already high) threat responses to the point where a large, angry man shouting at me and my baby in a confined space would almost certainly make me burst into tears, not to mention frighten the poor child. To intimidate babies and their mothers like that is unpleasant, to say the least.

Online, parents and childfree people often seem to be at war. Offline, however, in my personal relationships things feel a lot more cordial, perhaps because we love the people in our lives regardless of their reproductive status, or perhaps because all the beef is simply simmering, unarticulated, under the surface.

Since I became a parent, I’ve been having discussions with friends and readers about what it means to live a childfree life. They have made me think more deeply and empathically about how it feels to be part of a society where parenthood is the default journey when one does not have children. My colleague Helen Pidd’s recent article about the child-free movement and its radical, pioneering spirit, as well as our series “Why I don’t have a child”, added further to my understanding. The decision to be child-free is not always painless and can feel lonely. I can understand not always wanting to be reminded of that tough choice, or having the desire to feel like you’re enjoying life unencumbered. Parents benefit from child-free spaces, too. I love to read a book alone in a pub or cafe, and my heart will sometimes sink at the sight of a crying baby when I have left my own at home for some vital alone time.

I don’t take offence when people articulate a need for child-free spaces. When a child-free 37-year-old woman tells me that she doesn’t really want to be around children all the time, I get it. “But if you say that you have committed two massive, unforgivable crimes: not wanting kids (what is wrong with you?) and then not wanting to at least be involved with kids (you are a freak and must be a psychopath!),” she says.

I tell her that I always try to ask my child-free friends whether I should bring the baby along or not. “Hanging out with kids introduces all the elements I struggle with: chaos, noise, endless tasks … Sometimes that’s OK and it’s fun, but I appreciate it when friends don’t assume I’ll want to do that,” she says, noting that you can never have a proper conversation with another adult when their child is around. It brings to mind the phone call with married-with-toddlers Magda in Bridget Jones’s Diary: “Bridget, hi! I was just ringing to say in the potty! In the potty! Do it in the potty!”

Though the UK could be more child-friendly, I do still believe in the sanctity of adult-only spaces that I argued for in my past column, and, to quote restaurant critic Marina O’Loughlin: “Children shouldn’t rule the roost anywhere, frankly, but restaurants least of all. I’ve endured too many longed-for, carefully planned moments totally bollocksed by them.”

I suppose it boils down to a need for kindness and empathy on both sides. We all started life as babies screaming from colic or explosive diarrhoea. Babies cry as a way of communicating, and being a part of humanity means that we can’t always choose which other humans communicate with or around us. But when there’s an exit that isn’t 30,000 feet up in the sky, parents can also choose to take their baby through it.

    What’s working

I’ve long been a fan of Tessa Hadley’s writing, so it was great to reread Sunstroke, her short story collection, from a new perspective, that of “the warm vegetable soup of motherhood”. No one writes families better than Hadley.

    What’s not

Thanks to everyone who got in touch to recommend leak-proof night nappies: trials are ongoing but sizing up has helped. We are now on to molars, however, the worst of all the teething pains, or so I’m told. The poor baby is taking bites out of everything, myself included.

Indigenous mother of baby murdered by abusive partner says police failed her in ‘every way’, inquiry hears

An Indigenous mother whose son was kidnapped, tortured and murdered by her former partner says her baby could still be alive if police had done their job properly and believes officers failed her family in “every way”.

In testimony on Thursday, Tamica Mullaley says she described how she was left bleeding after being attacked by her abusive partner Mervyn Bell in Broome in 2013 – but when police arrived after being called to assist her, they arrested her, claiming she was abusive to officers.

Bell returned to the house, took the boy and murdered him. Bell was sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering and sexually assaulting Charlie. Bell killed himself in prison in 2015.

Mullaley says she told the inquiry into missing and murdered First Nations women and children on Thursday how her father, Ted, had repeatedly tried to raise the alarm. Ted told police Bell had made threats towards the baby and that they needed to immediately search for him.

But authorities took hours to act on the information, before issuing incorrect licence plate details for the car Bell was driving when he took the baby, Mullaley said.

When asked if she felt police failed her and Charlie, Mullaley replied: “Bloody oath they did, in every way.”

“He would still be here if they did their job right, there’s only one road out of Broome and if they had of done their job they would have been able to get him along that road,” Mullaley told Guardian Australia.

After they found out Charlie was dead, she alleged police came to her house and “were abusing and being racist towards my dad”.

“If my family were white, there would have been more care, more help,” she said.

Mullaley was charged with resisting arrest, while Ted Mullaley was charged with obstructing arrest.

The WA government apologised in 2022 over the police treatment of the family, and both Mullaley and her father were officially pardoned by the WA attorney general, John Quigley. Quigley said both had been charged while enduring “the unthinkable”.

Mullaley said she told the inquiry police officers needed cultural competency training specific to the regions in which they worked.

After traveling from Broome to Perth for this week’s hearing, Mullaley met with senators who form part of the inquiry committee on Friday. She said she was grateful for the opportunity to share her family’s anguish, in the hope that it could bring change and accountability.

“We’ve all come in and been invited here. It shows they’re aware of it. They’re aware that there is something wrong and it needs to be changed,” the Yamatji mother said.

The Mullaley family has fought for years for an inquest into baby Charlie’s death in the hopes that no family would have to endure a similar pain. Mullaley said she told the committee inquests into missing or murdered Aboriginal women and children need to be mandatory.

Chair of the inquiry, Queensland senator Paul Scarr, said the inquiry was critical to improving responses to missing and murdered Indigenous women and children and preventing violence.

“As a Senate committee, we need to shine a bright light on this issue and grab the attention of lawmakers, stakeholders and the Australian public. We have people in our community who have been absolutely traumatised,” he said.

“We have to focus on doing whatever we can, in a practical sense to come up with recommendations to try and constructively address this.”

Dr Hannah McGlade, a member of the UN permanent forum on Indigenous issues and women’s safety advocate, is supporting families of those who have been murdered.

She said reforms are needed to ensure Indigenous families are treated appropriately in all circumstances.

“We see a pattern of under-policing when it comes to Aboriginal women and children as victims and over-policing of Aboriginal people as offenders or perceived offenders,” she said.

“It’s a serious violation of our international human rights obligations and there has to be appropriate responses by the Australian government.”
