Why teaching of mathematics is still a big challenge in schools,writes Khurshid Bhat

Srinagar: Mathematics has always been a critical subject in our education system and it is an essential component of student learning.Mathematics is an integral part of our daily lives and it is pertinent to problem-solving, quantitative reasoning, and decision-making. However,teaching mathematics remains a big challenge in schools today and there are various reasons behind it.
One of the primary reasons that make teaching mathematics a big challenge in schools is the lack of competent and effective teachers. Although there are many teachers trained to be math instructors,not all of them possess the skills and expertise to deliver effective math lessons.Some teachers themselves find mathematics very challenging and feel uncomfortable teaching math concepts and problems to their students.
Another significant challenge is inadequate instructional materials and resources.There are often not enough textbooks,worked examples and practice materials for mathematics in most schools to help students understand the concepts. The lack of practical materials for students to work with means that they cannot develop their problem-solving and analytical skills fully.
Moreover,the difficulty level of mathematics is another obstacle in teaching mathematics. Mathematics is a subject that requires critical thinking,logical reasoning and continuous practice to understand better. Unfortunately,some students struggle with grasping the basic concepts and applying them to solve problems. This issue is compounded by the fact that in the traditional approach,the subject was taught as a series of rules and procedures, with little emphasis placed on visual representations and real-world applications.
Furthermore,the teaching of mathematics is also influenced by student’s attitudes and cultural background.Some students may have a preconceived idea that mathematics is a difficult subject and that they are not capable of learning it. This kind of negative attitude can result in a lack of interest in the subject,leading to disengagement from class and poor performance.
In conclusion,the teaching of mathematics remains a big challenge in schools,even in today’s era of advanced technology and pedagogy.The factors that contribute to this problem include the lack of qualified teachers, inadequate teaching resources,the difficulty level of mathematical concepts and the students attitude towards the subject.To overcome these challenges,a collaborative effort must be implemented among teachers,students and policymakers to develop effective teaching methodologies and provide the necessary resources to make mathematics education accessible and enjoyable for everyone.By doing so, we can inspire a love for mathematics and equip young minds for a better future.

MS Academy kids win 138 gold medals in Int’l Mathematics Olympiad

Hyderabad: MS Education here Academy bagged 138 gold medals in the International Mathematics Olympiad, a prestigious competitive test, where young minds from around the world come together to showcase their skills and knowledge in fundamental subjects.
In the competition, 138 students of MS Education Academy won gold medals at level 1 out of 1331 contestants. Students from the third to ninth grade participated and attended the test. Five of them advanced to the next level, accomplishing success in Level 2 of the competition.
Following the success, the school management held a ceremony in Hyderabad to felicitate the winners (when?). This was the first time ever that the students of the school participated in the International Mathematics Olympiad.

At the ceremony, managing director of MS Education Academy, Anwar Ahmad, addressed the audience and said that MS is striving hard to get the youngsters of the community at top levels such as the Indian Administrative Services. Expressing joy over the success of his students, he said “ The International Mathematics Olympiad would prove to be a stepping stone for the students to achieve their aspirations.”
Dr Moazzam Hussain, senior director of MSEA, while applauding the winners, said this was the first taste of success for the educational institution.
“However, it would not be the last as students have a long way to go in their careers. The next goal of MS Education Academy is to participate in the International Science Olympiad, which will be held on November 21, 2023. The school is committed to performing well in this competition too. Insha Allah, they will also participate in the International Maths Olympiad and International English Olympiad in the next academic year,” Hussain added.
What is Math Olympiad Exam?
The Math Olympiad is a prestigious exam conducted for every grade so that students can present their mathematical skills. The competitive test consists of real-life logical problems and situations based on the student’s grade level.

Mathematics Subject of HSE Part-Ist (Class 11″), Session Annual (Regular) Examination 2023 for Hard Zone Areas of UTs of Jammu and Kashmir/Ladakh, that was scheduled to be held on today 25-04-2023 (Tuesday) has been postponed. All the concerned Superintendents are accordingly informed that they shall not open the said Question paper packet.
However, other paper/s scheduled for today and onwards shall be conducted as per schedule.

Srinagar Schools To Teach Four Fundamental Ops Of Mathematics, BODMAS To Students Upto Class 10

SRINAGAR: The authorities in Srinagar have decided to teach four fundamental operations of Mathematics with “BODMAS” to students upto class 10th in order to enhance the quality of education and create equal interest in learning among students.
The decision was taken after the authorities found that non-teaching of four fundamental operations of Maths, along with “BODMAS” was impeding students’ understanding of Mathematics and making studies difficult for them.
Chief Education Officer Srinagar in a circular has said a discussion was held with education experts and experienced officers in Srinagar district to identify reasons for the lack of interest in studies among some students.
“It was concluded that students lacking a full command of Maths cannot become extraordinary intelligent, efficient, and all-rounder citizens,” the circular reads.
It reads that it has been decided that all schools in Srinagar district must teach these basic concepts to all students from Primary to Higher Secondary levels.
CEO has directed all the heads of institutions to impart impart full knowledge of the four fundamental operations and “BODMAS” to all students up to class 10th.
“The heads of schools are given a 15-day window, from April 24 to May 8 to impart full knowledge of the four fundamental operations and BODMAS to all students up to class 10th,” the circular reads.
CEO also warned schools of action if any student, after May 9 is found to be weak in these basic concepts.

“The concerned teachers will face action as warranted under the rules, and the concerned HOI will be held responsible,” the circular reads.
As per the circular chairman of cluster level committees have been asked to monitor this process under the guidance and supervision of respective cluster heads to ensure proper implementation of this circular in letter and spirit—(KNO)

Bharatpur: Senior BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi on Tuesday said the arithmetic of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s success has spoiled the “mathematics of the Modi bashing brigade”.
Speaking at an iftar event here, the former Union minister, without naming anyone, said some people are distressed over the continued failure of the disinformation drive against the prime minister.
“The arithmetic of PM Narendra Modi’s stupendous success has spoiled the mathematics of the Modi bashing brigade,” Naqvi said.

Targeting the Opposition, he said the Congress and its allies are suffering from the “obstinacy of opposing” each and every policy of the Modi government.
The people of the country are intelligent and they understand that the “clan of corrupt and criminals” is trying to create speed breakers in the path of the country’s prosperity.
The prime minister is demolishing every speed breaker with the power of “inclusive empowerment”, he said.
The iftar event was organised by Ajmer Dargah Committee member Amin Pathan. A large number of religious leaders and other prominent personalities attended the event.
