Lake would likely galvanize Trump supporters to the point that many Republicans think she would be all but impossible to defeat in a primary. But GOP strategists are concerned that Lake would turn off swing voters in the general election, particularly after she contested her loss in the gubernatorial contest in 2022.

Last year, a number of Senate contenders tied to Trump won their primaries but were defeated in the fall. In an effort to avoid another disappointing election, Sen. Steve Daines (R-Mont.), chair of the NRSC, has actively recruited candidates he believes are electable in key battleground states, including West Virginia, Montana and Pennsylvania. But Daines has not picked a favorite as of yet in Arizona.

In a CNN interview this week, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell declined to comment directly on a possible run by Lake, though he left Arizona out of his list of top four Senate battlegrounds. He said there is “high likelihood” that GOP leaders would wait until after the primary to determine whether to get involved. “I think there are some other places where with the right candidate, we might be able to compete — in Nevada, Arizona,” he said. The Arizona Senate primary won’t take place until August of 2024.

The NRSC regularly sits down with potential and declared candidates, and such a meeting does not suggest any preference on its part. Pinal County Sheriff Mark Lamb, the only Republican who has announced a run for Sinema’s seat, had a meeting with the NRSC earlier this year, as did Karrin Taylor Robson, a businessperson who is considering a campaign. Taylor Robson lost to Lake in the 2022 gubernatorial primary.

Lake’s spokesperson did not provide the names of the senators she is sitting down with this week. The NRSC declined to comment on whether Daines is meeting with Lake. When Lake previously gathered with NRSC officials in February, she did not meet with him.

Lake and her staffers have taken a number of steps recently that suggest she is either close to running for the Senate or positioning herself as Trump’s running mate, should he win the presidential nomination. Her aide, Colton Duncan, said he is “99 percent sure she’s going to run for Senate.” She is releasing a book, “Unafraid: Just Getting Started.” She has also attacked Gallego as too liberal for Arizona.

A GOP strategist close to Lake said she is expected to announce a Senate campaign in the early fall, though others in her orbit said a kickoff could take place earlier.

In addition, Lake has made two stops this year in Iowa, the first-in-the-nation caucus state where she happens to have grown up. Last week, she spoke at Conservative Political Action Conference Hungary and met with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, a venerated international figure in America’s MAGA movement. She is currently in the United Kingdom, where she appeared on “Piers Morgan Uncensored,” speaking to him about her lawsuit disputing her loss in the governor’s race as well as her future.

“If for some reason we don’t get a fair outcome in our election, I will run for Senate, most likely,” Lake told him.

G-20: Men And Machinery Working For Maximum Hours To Clean Dal Lake

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Intensifying the ongoing cleaning of Dal Lake in Srinagar ahead of the mega event of G-20, the J&K Lake Conservation and Management Authority (LCMA) has placed men and machinery to work for maximum hours to ensure the cleaning of the water body on a fast-track basis, an official said on Tuesday.

LCMA Vice Chairman, Bashir Ahmad Bhat said that the cleaning of the Dal Lake is an ongoing process, but ahead of the G-20 event, they have switched the cleaning process on a fast-track basis.

“In view of the G-20 summit event, men and machinery have been pressed into work for maximum hours, and these days it starts from around 7 am to 9 pm on a daily basis,” he said.

He said they are cleaning the entire Dal and are maintaining the area of around 6.5 sq km, which they have cleaned up over the past two years so that there is no regrowth.

Bhat said there are some areas across the shoreline where they cannot take up cleaning with the help of machines, but they are deploying labor for manual cleaning in those areas alongside the work of dredging on the shorelines.

Pertinently, in order to add to the beauty of the lake and to attract more tourists, J&K LCMA in March this year installed an aerator/fountain inside the Dal Lake which shoots water up to 80 meters high.

According to the LCMA officials, the clusters of the aerators have been pre-programmed with different patterns of formations viz high jet, mist formation, and trumpet formation with changing colors which provides breath-taking and scintillating visuals.

As the G20—tourism summit is scheduled to be held at Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC) on the banks of Dal Lake here from May 22 to 24 this year, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir—Srinagar is witnessing a major makeover—(KNO)

  • Remains found in Lake Mead identified as Las Vegas man missing for 25 years

Remains found in Lake Mead identified as Las Vegas man missing for 25 years

    [ad_1]

Nevada officials have identified remains found in Lake Mead as those of a Las Vegas man missing for 25 years, the latest development in a quest to identify a series of bodies discovered in America’s largest reservoir last year.

On three different days last summer, visitors at a beach on the lake discovered skeletal remains along the shoreline. The Clark county coroner’s office announced on Thursday that those remains belonged to the same person, now identified as as Claude Russell Pensinger, who disappeared on 14 July 1998 at the age of 52.

Pensinger is the third person the office has identified after several sets of remains emerged from the lake amid a devastating drought that has severely depleted the reservoir.

Water levels at Lake Mead, a popular recreation site that hosted more than 7 million visitors last year, have been at record lows due to a drought that has gripped the region for nearly two decades. The dry spell in the Colorado River basin, along with overextraction, extreme heat and decreased snowmelt, has uncovered large swaths of the lake bed.

Beginning last spring, human remains surfaced at Lake Mead in quick succession: a body with a gunshot wound in a barrel in May, a jawbone in the sand the following week, and in July, partial skeletal remains encased in mud along the shoreline. In October, contractors working near a marina found more remains.

The back-to-back discoveries were not an indication of a serial killer, experts cautioned, but rather the consequence of the environmental disaster draining the lake and uncovering bodies that had once been lost to the water. Most are suspected to be accidental deaths but one case, the remains found in a barrel, is being investigated as a homicide. The local mob museum said a barrel was historically a mob method for disposing of bodies.

The coroner’s office team have identified two other sets of remains, both Las Vegas-area men who are believed to have drowned – Donald P Smith, a 39-year-old last seen in April 1974, and Thomas Erndt, a 42-year-old last seen at the lake in August 2002. All three identifications were made using DNA analysis.

The cause and manner of Pensinger’s death is undetermined, the coroner’s office said. The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that Pensinger was fishing on the lake when he disappeared and his boat was later found running in circles in the water.

Pensinger’s brother said the pair were fishing together on the lake that day, in separate boats, when Pensinger failed to show up at a meeting point later, 8NewsNow reported. His brother reportedly described him as a good swimmer and a navy and coast guard veteran.

The remains of a man who died of a gunshot wound discovered in a barrel have not yet been identified.

Dealing with skeletal remains is particularly challenging, Melanie Rouse, the Clark county coroner, told the Guardian last year, due to the delay from the time of death to the time of recovery and the lack of key physical identifiers. But the office remains dedicated to investigating the cases and providing answers to families, she said.

“That’s one of the reasons why we continue to do what we do – being able to provide closure and being able to return these unidentified individuals back to their families and provide them with a name,” she said.

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: A Waste Project is organising a clean-up drive on Thursday at the Nerella lake walkway, Kondapur with the help of volunteers from across the city.

The dried-up Nerella Lake, which is situated at a 10 minute walk from the Sarath City Mall, is strewn with plastic bottles, empty liquor bottles and plastic bags. Volunteers from across Hyderabad will be tidying up the space with some help from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC).

Speaking about the initiative, Avinash told Siasat.com, “Our aim is to use social media as a tool to raise awareness and inculcate personal responsibility against littering. Of the 30 most polluted cities in the world, 22 are in India. We want to reach out to youth through social media and sensitise them about throwing garbage on roads and littering in their surroundings”.

Bodies of two missing Indian students recovered from US lake

    [ad_1]

New York: Bodies of two Indiana University students from India who went missing at a lake last week, have been recovered after a massive search that was hampered by severe weather conditions, officials said.

Siddhant Shah, 19, and Aryan Vaidya, 20, went swimming at Monroe Lake, roughly 64 miles southwest of downtown Indianapolis, with a group of friends on April 15 but didn’t resurface, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources said in a news release.

The bodies were located and recovered by search crews on April 18 east of the Paynetown Marina in 18 feet of water.

    MS Education Academy

The two were boating on a pontoon when their group anchored to swim in the lake, which is 10,750 acres and 35-40 feet deep.

“When both men did not resurface, friends tried to help but were unsuccessful,” the release said.

One of the men had been struggling in the water when others jumped in to help, said Lt. Angela Goldman, a Department of Natural Resources representative, told USA Today.

Rescuers started searching the lake using sonar and scuba divers, but were forced to pause operations on the first day due to windy weather conditions.

“With 15-to-20-mph sustained winds, we’re struggling with that,” Goldmsaid told USA Today.

Indiana University student services transported the rest of the group back to campus where they were provided counseling services.

  • Parliamentary Panel Recommends Fresh Mapping Of Dal Lake

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: A parliamentary panel has recommended to the JK Union Territory administration to conduct fresh mapping of Dal Lake.

In its report, the department-related parliamentary standing committee on Ministry of Home Affairs has recommended to the UT administration to conduct fresh mapping of Dal Lake.

“The Committee recommends that the UT administration may conduct fresh mapping of Dal Lake to get an understanding about the percentage of the lake’s water which is relatively clean or severely degraded. This will help the UT administration to make a conservation plan for Dal Lake as well as in removing encroachments,” reads the report which was tabled in the Parliament during the ongoing budget session.

The panel has recommended that the cleaning of the water-body should be completed within a time frame. “Additional allocations, if required, may be sought from the Ministry of Finance at the Revised Estimates(RE) stage for this purpose,” the report states.

Briefing the panel about the steps taken for the restoration of Dal-Nagin lake, the UT Administration on Feb 16, 2023 informed them that the  work for the preservation of both the water bodies spread over an area of 25.01 sq. km. and in the catchment area of 337.17 sq. km has been undertaken in a mission mode.

“Numerous other steps including de-weeding and lake cleaning on a large scale have been taken up for the conservation of the lake to restore it to its pristine glory,” the JK administration told the panel.

In 2022-23, the Ministry of Home Affairs allocated Rs 273 crore for the rehabilitation of the Dal-Nagin Lake.

The committee, in its report, said that it notes that while Rs 273 crores was sanctioned in BE 2022-23, the UT administration has not provided details regarding its utilization.

The panel observed that there are large number of encroachments in the Dal lake area.

“Weeds, silt and untreated sewage are increasingly choking the beautiful lake, which draws tens of thousands of tourists each year. The waste discharge from houseboats also adds to the pollution in the lake. The committee observes that the visible outcome of the projects are yet to be seen,” the report further states. (KNO)

  • Construction of Non-motorable walkway around Wular Lake: RTI Applicant Alleges Authorities of Asking Him To ‘Pay Charges’ De

    [ad_1]

    Babar Rather

Srinagar, Mar 16 (GNS): An RTI applicant from Bandipora on Thursday alleged that he has been asked to deposit charges by a Public Information Officer in the Office of Executive Engineer R&B Division Bandipora in lieu of obtaining desired information vis-à-vis construction of non-motorable walkway around Wular Lake in the north Kashmir district.

Exercising his right to know, anti-corruption & RTI activist, Parvaiz Bhat had sought details of tendering process of construction work of non-Motorable walkway around Wular lake from Banyari Bridge to Naaz Nallah including approach road leading towards Delta Park. The work, according to him, is being executed by WUCMA and is being supervised by R&B (PWD) Division Bandipora.

“I had filed the RTI as I was having strong apprehensions that proper procedure and formalities have not been taken care of before and after the tendering process of the work”, Bhat told GNS.

“The approach road constructed can cost the lives of people in future as the laid procedure hasn’t been followed anywhere as sub standard soil has been used in gross violation of the set norms”, he said.

He alleged that R&B department in order to save their skin were hiding information and are instead serving him notices to pay arbitrary costs for obtaining the desired information.

Taking a strong exception to the levy of ‘arbitrary costs’, Bhat said that these PIOs need to be first imparted with proper training and awareness regarding the provisions of RTI Act (2005). “I belong to the BPL category and have attached the photocopy of my Ration card with the RTI application for reference. There are clear observations in the (RTI) Act that persons belonging to BPL category are exempted from paying any kind of fee,” he added.

He further alleged that he was being pressurized to withdraw RTI Application by the different quarters.

He appealed probe agencies including CBI, ACB and Crime Branch Kashmir to take suo-moto cognizance of the matter and initiate a probe into the matter in order to bring the culprits to justice.

When contacted, Public Information Officer (Executive Engineer R&B Division Bandipora), Asadullah Najar told GNS that they haven’t denied any information to the applicant under the Act.

“We haven’t denied any information. He was asked to pay the requisite amount against the Photostat charges”, he said.

Asked about the exemption to BPL category under the Act, Asadullah Najar claimed that there are 50% of Ration Cards issued fraudulently. “The applicant should obtain an income certificate mentioning the income of not more than 1000 Rupees per month from concerned Tehsildar and accordingly we will entertain that he’s belonging to a BPL category”, he maintained.

He also said that the applicant was not being pressurized by anyone to withdraw the application. (GNS)

A cultural anthropologist gives time to Kashmir’s famed Dal Lake and generates an impressive piece of literature, writes Insha Shirazi

Tourists enjoying a sunset in Dal lake rendered golden by the sub. KL Image Bilal Bahadur
Tourists enjoying a sunset in Dal lake, rendered golden by the sub. KL Image Bilal Bahadur

Michael J Casimir’s The Cultural Ecology of the Dal Lake in Kashmir is a thorough and instructive exploration of one of the most exquisite and significant bodies of water. The lake has natural and cultural significance. Well known for its beauty, the lake is a significant source of income.

Casimir paints a clear picture of how the lake has been shaped over the centuries and how it still matters for contemporary culture and ecology. A professor of cultural anthropology at the University of Cologne, Casimir has spent a lot of time in the field studying ecology, economy, and environmental management.

The book goes into great length on the lake’s intricate ecosystem, the history of houseboats, and water transportation. It offers details about the evolution of tourism and its literal paralysis owing to political upheaval in the 1980s and 1990s. While detailing Kashmir’s transition to Islam, the book offers a sketch of Kashmir’s “caste systems”, sectarianism, marital customs and social structure.

The book dives into the ins and outs of Dal Lake while detailing its ecosystem. It explains the development of the houseboat and water transportation.

The key focus of the book is the exploration of the lifestyle of the Hanji people, a group of fishermen living in the lake and how they play an essential role in the advancement of culture, the economy, and aesthetics. He provides an in-depth look at the Lake market gardens, raised fields, and floating gardens, and how the residents make an artificial landscape on the water and plant vegetables, flowers, weeds, and water lilies.

The book explains how market gardeners plan their gardens based on weather trends and how the 2014 flood affected the growth of the lake.  Offering interesting insights into intriguing lotus gardens, the book explains how the lotus rhizomes are a source of revenue. An interesting and engaging read, the book provides an enlightening and informative look into the lives of the Hanjis and how essential they are to the economy and ecology of Srinagar city.

    5kashmir13
A man clears snow from the roof of his houseboat during heavy snowfall at river Jehlum in Srinagar

    The Houseboats

Detailing the history and evolution of the houseboats, the book does not forget to link the other economies and offer a window to explain how modern technologies like the cell phone has impacted space.  It offers an unbiased examination of the impacts of human-driven development on the ecology of the lake and its inhabitants, exploring both the positive and negative effects. He also provides a thorough discussion of the lake’s many fish species, vegetation, and water birds, as well as the issue of sewage pollution. The author offers insight into the lake’s ecology and how it has changed over the centuries as a result of human-driven development.

    The Pollution

Off late, the lake has been facing severe environmental issues due to the unregulated construction of various buildings on its banks, and the overuse of fertilizers for agricultural purposes. Massive concentration of fertilizers has resulted in the death of many native fish and aquatic species, including the now incredibly rare Schizothorax niger.

The government has relocated many of the local fishermen. It has made efforts to improve the lake’s condition, such as implementing sewage treatment programmes and providing better access to roads, basic sanitation, and quality education. Flagging the issues facing the lake, particularly its deterioration due to sedimentation, domestic sewage, and other human activities, the author has observed that success is eluding the policymakers.

Painting a grim picture of Lake’s future, the author believes that proper funding and support from the government can help the water body to regain its pristine status. The author argues that the political forces in power often have conflicting interests, and this can lead to the people of Kashmir being disconnected from their spiritual roots. To protect the iconic Lake, the author argues that both the public and the governing authorities must engage in actions that uphold the teachings of Islam. This will not only preserve the natural beauty of the lake and its surroundings but also preserve the culture and spiritual identity of the region. To achieve this goal, it is crucial that the general public cooperates with the government and that the government implements its policies in a manner that serves the best interests of the people.
