Turkey condemns burning of Quran in Denmark

    [ad_1]

Ankara: Turkey condemned the burning of the Quran by a far-right politician near a mosque in Denmark on Friday.

“We condemn in the strongest terms that the hate crime committed in Sweden against our holy book Quran is allowed to be committed again in Copenhagen, Denmark today,” the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

“The fact that this despicable act, which was carried out in Denmark after Sweden and the Netherlands, was not prevented despite all our warnings, is worrying as it reveals the dangerous dimensions of religious intolerance and hatred in Europe by abusing the so-called freedom environment,” the statement added.

Rasmus Paludan, leader of the Danish far-right political party Hard Line, burned the Quran in front of a mosque in Copenhagen on Friday, Xinhua news agency reported.

Paludan earlier burned the Quran outside the Turkish Embassy in Stockholm last Saturday which caused Turkey to postpone a trilateral mechanism meeting with Sweden and Finland on their NATO bid.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry on Friday summoned Danish Ambassador to Ankara Danny Annan ahead of the demonstration and asked for the reversal of the permission given to Rasmus Paludan.

The protest involving the Quran is the third of its kind recently.

Ankara summoned the Dutch envoy in Ankara on Tuesday to convey its protest after Edwin Wagensveld, leader of a far-right group Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamisation of the West, tore out pages from a Quran in the Netherlands.

Moscow orders Latvian ambassador to leave Russia within 2 weeks

    [ad_1]

Moscow: The Latvian ambassador to Russia, Maris Riekstins, should leave Russia within two weeks, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

Latvian Charge d’Affaires Dace Rutka was summoned to the Ministry in protest over Latvia’s decision to lower the level of Russian-Latvian diplomatic relations, the Ministry said in a statement on Friday.

Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics said on Monday his country recalled its ambassador from Russia and downgraded diplomatic relations with Russia to the level of charge d’affaires as of February 24. Rinkevics said the decision was made in a show of solidarity with its neighbour Estonia, Xinhua news agency reported.

The Russian Foreign Ministry called Latvia’s justification of its decision completely unacceptable. It said that the only way the Baltic states had shown solidarity was through their “total Russophobia” and their efforts to promote hostility against Russia.

  • ‘Haath Se Haath Jodo’ Abhiyan getting an overwhelming response: Shabbir

‘Haath Se Haath Jodo’ Abhiyan getting an overwhelming response: Shabbir

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Former Minister Mohammed Ali Shabbir on Friday claimed that the ‘Haath Se Haath Jodo’ Abhiyan was getting tremendous response from the people across the State.

About 50 activists of BRS and BJP of Kancherla village of Bhiknoor Mandal, Kamareddy district joined the Congress party. Shabbir Ali invited them to the Congress party by offering a ‘Khandwa’.

Speaking to media persons on the occasion, Shabbir Ali said that the ‘Haath Se Haath Jodo’ Abhiyan would be an overwhelming success. He said the campaign has already been launched at a grand scale in Kamareddy on the occasion of the 74th Republic Day on Thursday. “During the two-month-long campaign, we will expose the failures of the BJP Govt at the Centre and BRS Govt in Telangana. We will explain to the people how they were deceived by Modi and KCR Govts with their false promises and fake assurances. They failed to address the problems of rising unemployment and inflation and deceived the people by creating an illusion of development,” he said.

He informed that a letter written by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and a ‘charge sheet’ against the BJP and BRS Govts would be delivered to each household during the ‘Haath Se Haath Jodo’ Abhiyan. “Telangana’s politics has become too noisy due to the ongoing war of words between BRS and BJP leaders. Both parties are admitting lack of development in Telangana during the last eight years. But they are blaming each other for the same. People have realised that the tussle between BRS and BJP was fake and was only aimed at diverting people’s attention from the failures of their governments in the State and at the Centre. Therefore, people have decided to support the Congress party in the next elections,” he said.

Shabbir Ali accused Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao of wasting more time in politics than focusing on governance. “The Union Budget will be presented on 1st February and Telangana’s budget will also be presented in the first week of February. Telangana is in huge debts of over Rs. 5 lakh crore and it has no money to pay salaries on time. Instead of holding meetings with financial experts to explore ways to come out of the ongoing financial crisis, KCR is entirely focussed on expanding his BRS party. Even Finance Minister T. Harish Rao is busy attending party programmes. CM KCR did not hold a single meeting with the Finance and other related departments to discuss the forthcoming budget. This approach will cause huge damage to Telangana’s interest,” he said.

The Congress leader said that the ‘Haath Se Haath Jodo’ Abhiyan would strengthen the reach of the Congress party across Telangana as each party worker would visit every household in his area to expose the failures of BRS and BJP Govts. “We will carry the message of peace, brotherhood and unity given by Rahul Gandhi during his Bharat Jodo Yatra to every citizen. We will enlighten people on how they were being mistreated by the KCR and Modi regimes,” he said.

Shabbir Ali said the problems being faced by the people in their villages and localities would also be highlighted during the ‘Haath Se Haath Jodo’ Abhiyan.

  • J&K: Kharge writes to Shah regarding adequate security for Bharat Jodo Yatra

J&K: Kharge writes to Shah regarding adequate security for Bharat Jodo Yatra

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has written to Home Minister Amit Shah seeking his intervention in ensuring adequate security to the Bharat Jodo Yatra in Jammu and Kashmir.

His letter to Shah comes after the Bharat Jodo Yatra was suspended for the afternoon session on Friday following a “security lapse”, with the Congress alleging that the J and K Police had withdrawn security around its leader Rahul Gandhi in the wake of surging crowds during the foot march in Qazigund.

“We are expecting a huge gathering to join the yatra over the next two days and also the function that will be held on 30th January at Srinagar. Many senior Congress leaders and leaders of other important political parties are attending the culmination function to be held on the 30th of January.

“I shall be grateful if you could personally intervene in this matter and advise the concerned officials to provide adequate security till the culmination of the yatra and the function on the 30th January at Srinagar,” the Congress president said in his letter to the home minister.

He said he is writing after the “unfortunate security lapse” during the Bharat Jodo Yatra.

On the advice of the security officials in charge of the security detail of Rahul Gandhi, the Yatra had to be suspended, Kharge said.

“We appreciate the Jammu and Kashmir Police and welcome their statement saying they will continue to ensure complete security till the culmination of the journey,” he said.

However, the leader of opposition in the Rajya Sabha also said, “You will appreciate the fact that a large crowd of common people has joined and walked in the Bharat Jodo Yatra every day. It is difficult for the organisers to tell exactly how many people are expected over the day as it is a spontaneous gesture of the common people to join the yatra.”

The Bharat Jodo Yatra led by Gandhi started in Kanyakumari on September 7 and will culminate on January 30 in Srinagar after traversing through 12 states.

The 3500-km foot march is aimed at galvanising the Congress cadres across the country, but the party is claiming that the Yatra is not political and seeks to unite India in the wake of growing “hatred”.

8 Israelis killed in East Jerusalem synagogue attack

    [ad_1]

Jerusalem: At least eight people were killed and 10 others injured in a shooting attack in a settlement in East Jerusalem on Friday night, the Israeli Foreign Ministry said in a tweet.

According to Israel’s Magen David Adom emergency service, several people were being treated for life-threatening injuries and the assailant had been shot dead.

Israeli media reported that the attack began at a synagogue before spreading to a street in the neighbourhood, Xinhua news agency reported.

The incident came hours after Palestinian militants from the Gaza Strip fired rockets into Israel, which retaliated by launching airstrikes. No casualties were reported yet.

Tensions have been high since Israeli forces killed nine Palestinians, including a 61-year-old woman, in a raid in the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank on Thursday. Israel said the raid was carried out to foil “a terror squad” that planned an attack against Israelis.

  • Children’s ‘rushed’ immune response makes them susceptible to Covid reinfection: Study

Children’s ‘rushed’ immune response makes them susceptible to Covid reinfection: Study

    [ad_1]

Melbourne: Scientists have found that children’s immune systems, unlike those of adults, do not remember the virus and do not adapt, and so when exposed to SARS-CoV-2 again, their body still treats it as a new threat, risking reinfection.

According to the study, children have largely avoided severe COVID-19 symptoms because they have a strong initial ‘innate’ immune reaction that quickly defeats the virus.

And now, researchers led by scientists at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, Australia, have uncovered what this might mean for the immune system, the study published in the journal Clinical Immunology said.

“The price that children pay for being so good at getting rid of the virus in the first place is that they don’t have the opportunity to develop ‘adaptive’ memory to protect them the second time they are exposed to the virus,” said lead author Tri Phan, Co-Lead of the Precision Immunology Program at Garvan.

“Because children haven’t been exposed to many viruses, their immune system is still ‘naive’. And because they don’t develop memory T cells, they are at risk of getting sick when they become reinfected.

“With each new infectious episode as they get older, there is a risk of their T cells becoming ‘exhausted’ and ineffective, like the T cells in older people. This is why we think it’s important to vaccinate children,” said Phan.

The immune system has two modes. The innate immune system is the first line of defence, comprising physical barriers such as skin and mucosal surfaces that block viruses from entering.

The innate immune system is also composed of cells that make chemicals to signal to other cells and ward off the viruses. The innate immune system does not distinguish between one type of virus or another.

The second line of defence comprises B and T cells of the adaptive immune system. These cells have specific receptors that can recognise and distinguish different parts of a virus and generate a rapid response to neutralise or limit it.

Infants start with an immune system blank slate, which has a much higher proportion of naive T cells, the researchers found. As they move through childhood into adulthood and become exposed to more viruses, the naive T cells are replaced by memory T cells that are locked in to making responses to viruses they have seen before, the study said.

“Over time, as you get infections, your immune system becomes more ‘educated’, allowing you to make a faster immune response that’s tightly matched to the viruses that have infected you before,” said Philip Britton, Associate Professor and clinical lead in the study.

“Children’s immune systems move from relying mostly on the innate system, to needing the adaptive system as a backup as they grow older and are unable to clear viruses as rapidly,” said Britton.

In this study, Phan, Britton and colleagues took a deep dive to investigate T cells and cellular immune responses of a small group of children and their household family contacts who had mild or no symptoms from coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) infection, it said.

The researchers sequenced white blood cell samples to analyse T cells in children and adults at the time of acute infection and one month later, the study said.

Because they studied household family contacts who were infected, researchers could control for the impact of genetic or environmental influences on the immune response, the study said.

The scientists found that children had many different naive T cells to fight SARS-CoV-2 and made poor memory T cell responses to the virus after they had recovered, whereas the adults had few naive T cells but made good memory T cell responses after recovery

India’s G20 presidency will be outcome-oriented: Amitabh Kant

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: India’s G20 presidency will be decisive, inclusive and outcome-oriented, said G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant at a press conference on Friday.

He underlined that G20 is important because it comprises 85 per cent of the global GDP, 78 per cent of global trade and 2/3rds of the world’s population.

It is significant in light of the world’s ongoing crises, Kant said.

A new Engagement Group – Startup20 – has been established as part of the G20 India Presidency. Startup20 aims to develop a global narrative for supporting startups and facilitating synergies among startups, corporations, investors, innovation agencies, and other key ecosystem stakeholders, according to an official release of Startup20 PRO.

The primary objective is to harmonise the global startup ecosystem through a collaborative and forward-looking approach.

As per the official statement, the purpose of this group is to provide a common platform for startups from G20 member countries to come together to develop actionable guidance in the form of the building of enabler’s capacities, identification of funding gaps, enhancement of employment opportunities, achievement of SDG targets and climate resilience, and growth of an inclusive ecosystem.

The Startup20 activities will span over five events.

The Inception Meet of Startup20 will be held in Hyderabad on January 28-29. The summit event will happen in July 2023 in Gurugram with three intervening events that have been planned in different parts of India.

  • Sky Sports to broadcast ICC tournaments in UK and Ireland till 2031

Sky Sports to broadcast ICC tournaments in UK and Ireland till 2031

    [ad_1]

Dubai: Sky Sports will broadcast all International Cricket Council (ICC) tournaments in the UK and Ireland until the end of 2031 after signing a new eight-year deal with cricket’s world governing body.

For the first time, there will be a direct contractual relationship between the ICC and Sky Sports.

“We are delighted to partner with Sky Sports until 2031 as the home of ICC cricket in the UK and Ireland. For the first time the partnership will be a direct relationship with Sky Sports which gives us some exciting opportunities for innovative collaborations. I am confident this partnership can support our long-term ambition to attract more players and more fans to the game,” said Geoff Allardice, ICC Chief Executive, in an official statement on Friday.

Starting from 2024, the partnership will see Sky and its streaming platform NOW hold the ICC Broadcast and Digital rights for all men’s and women’s events at the pinnacle of the sport including the ICC Cricket World Cups and ICC T20 World Cups through to the end of 2031.

During the course of the partnership, there will be both a major international men’s and women’s event every year as well as a World Test Championship Final every two years.

The new deal reaffirms Sky as the long-term home of cricket in the UK and Ireland, broadcasting 28 international events between 2024 and 2031 across men’s, women’s and u19 cricket. This also includes three confirmed events on UK soil, the ICC World Test Championship Final 2025, the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2030.

“With more people watching cricket at the highest-level after England men’s and women’s successes in 2017, 2019 and 2022, our award-winning coverage strives to give cricket fans the complete experience, with all the action both on and off the pitch.

This new direct partnership with the ICC means that Sky Sports viewers in the UK & Ireland will continue to enjoy every ball, run, wicket and catch from every international tournament for many years to come, and we’re all hugely excited to see what’s in store,” said Jonathan Licht, Sky Sports MD.

ICC events have had registered record viewing in the UK in recent years. The ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019 recorded the highest average audience for a cricket tournament in the UK to date and drew the highest ever UK TV peak for cricket of 8.8m viewers as Sky shared the rights to the Final with Channel 4.

England’s victory over Pakistan in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Final last year at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Australia was the highest viewed T20 match in the UK ever following a similar partnership with the terrestrial broadcaster.

Last year in August, Disney Star had bagged rights to broadcast all ICC men’s and women’s events in India on a four-year deal from 2024 to 2027. Less than 48 hours later, it announced that they had licensed the TV broadcasting rights of the Men’s and Under-19 events to Zee.
