Delhi: Man impersonates UAE govt official, cheats Leela Palace Hotel for Rs 23L

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The man, who impersonated a UAE government functionary and duped The Leela Palace Hotel in the national capital of Rs 23 lakh after fleeing without paying the bills, was finally arrested by the Delhi Police from Karnataka.

A senior police official said that the accused, identified as Mohammed Sharif, 41, stayed at The Leela Palace Hotel in the Sarojini Nagar area for three months and then fled without settling his outstanding bills of more than Rs 23 lakh. He also stole some hotel valuables.

The accused was arrested on January 19 from Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka.

Sharif stayed at the hotel from August 1, 2022, till November 20, 2022, and escaped without settling a bill of Rs 23,46,413, as per the hotel staff.

According to the FIR accessed by IANS, the man checked into the hotel with a fake business card and posed as an important functionary of the government of UAE office of His Highness Sheikh Falah Bin Zayed AL Nahyan.

“He also gave a resident card of the United Arab Emirates on arrival. It seems the guest purposely gave these cards to create a false image and garner extra trust with an intent to cheat/deceive the hotel at a later stage,” stated the FIR.

“The man had also made a few part settlements in the month of August and September 2022 worth Rs 11.5 lakh for room charges, the total outstanding still stands at INR 23,48,413 against which he had issued us a post-dated cheque worth INR 20 lakh due for November 21, 2022, which was duly submitted to our bank on September 22, 2022, but due to insufficient funds, the cheque bounced,” read the FIR.

“On November 20, 2022, around 1 p.m., the man fled with hotel valuables and this seems to be completely pre-planned since we were under the impression that by November 22, 2022 hotel will get the dues cleared through the cheque he had submitted,” read the FIR.

Based on the complaint, the Delhi Police registered an FIR on January 13 under sections 419 (punishment for cheating by personation), 420 (cheating), and 380 (theft in dwelling house, etc.,) of the Indian Penal Code.

Further investigation in the matter is on.

Bharat Jodo Yatra resumes amid tight security in J-K’s Kathua

    [ad_1]

Kathua/Jammu: The Bharat Jodo Yatra led by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi resumed Sunday from Hiranagar in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district amid heightened security in the wake of twin blasts in Jammu.

After a day-long break, the foot march started as per schedule around 7 am from Hiranagar near the International Border along the Jammu-Pathankot highway which was sealed by police and other security forces.

Accompanied by J-K Pradesh Congress chief Vikar Rasool Wani, working president Raman Bhalla and hundreds of volunteers carrying the tricolour, Gandhi entered Samba district’s Tapyal-Gagwal after crossing Londi check point at around 8 am and was greeted by enthusiastic workers and supporters waiting on both sides of the road.

After covering about 25-km distance, the march will have a night halt at Chak Nanak before restarting from Samba’s Vijaypur for Jammu, where it will reach on Monday.

Officials said adequate security arrangements are in place for Gandhi with police, CRPF and other security agencies keeping a tight vigil to ensure a peaceful march.

Security has been further beefed up across Jammu and Kashmir in the wake of twin bomb blasts in Narwal area on the outskirts of Jammu city on Saturday, that left nine people injured.

Police suspect that IEDs were used to carry out the twin explosions in an SUV parked in a repair shop and in a vehicle at a nearby junkyard at Transport Nagar area of Narwal.

The terror attack comes at a time when security agencies in the region are on high alert in the wake of the Yatra of the Congress and the upcoming Republic Day celebrations.

The march started from Kanyakumari on September 7 and entered Jammu and Kashmir from Punjab on Thursday.

The yatra is scheduled to end in Srinagar on January 30 with hoisting of national flag at Congress headquarters by Gandhi.

  • After chilly winter season, Hyderabad may witness harsh summer

After chilly winter season, Hyderabad may witness harsh summer

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The residents of Hyderabad who were witnessing the chilly winter season for the past few weeks are likely to see harsh summer in the coming months as El Nino event may make 2023 hotter.

The last three years were La Nino years whereas, the upcoming year is likely to be El Nino which not only makes summer harsher but also results in monsoon failure.

What are El Nino and La Nino?

El Nino and La Nino are two climate patterns. While El Nino is known for the abnormal warming of surface water in the eastern tropical pacific ocean whereas, La Nino results in the unusual cooling of the tropical eastern pacific.

Due to this unusual warming and cooling of surface water, the monsoon in India is adversely affected. In intense La Nino, flood poses risk to crops whereas, in El Nino, the agriculture sector faces drought conditions.

Their impact on seasons in Hyderabad

The duration of the La Nino event is between one to three years whereas, El Nino continues for less than a year.

For the past three years, Hyderabad along with other parts of the country was seeing chilly winter season and good monsoon due to La Nino, however, El Nino which is likely to be witnessed in the upcoming months may make summer hotter.

Hyderabad may see harsh summer after chilly winter

During the past few weeks, Hyderabad saw chilly winter season. The minimum temperate dropped to 6.5 degrees Celsius last week.

However, in the next few months, the city is likely to see rise in temperature. Even the monsoon season in the city is likely to be impacted due to the El Nino event.

In 2015, the El Nino event has significantly increased the temperature in the city during the summer. It has also affected rainfall and crop output in India.

  • Demand to postpone Telangana inter practical exams rises

Demand to postpone Telangana inter practical exams rises

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Several students are demanding the postponement of Telangana inter practical exams alleging that no practical classes were conducted in their colleges. The exams are scheduled to be conducted in February.

Some of them are of the opinion that the practical exams should be conducted after inter theory examinations that are scheduled to be held in March.

No practical class conducted in inter first year

In some junior colleges, practical classes are not conducted in inter first. In the second year too, the classes are held just before the examination thereby leaving students confused.

In several colleges, practical classes are conducted at the end of the academic year when students have to focus on the theory examination.

Some colleges don’t even have proper equipment needed to conduct lab.

Students fear drop in overall percentage

The practical marks play a significant role in the overall percentage in inter. Because of it, students are worried that their percentage may dip due to poor performance in the practical exams.

MPC students have to appear for practical exams in Physics and Chemistry whereas, BiPC students have to appear for four subjects viz., Botany, Zoology, Physics, and Chemistry.

English likely to be added to Telangana inter practical exams

Telangana State Board of Intermediate Education (TSBIE) is gearing up to introduce English practical lab in intermediate courses.

From next academic year, the English practical exam is likely to be conducted for 20 marks by reducing the weightage of the English theory exam to 80.

The board has taken this decision to improve the spoken and comprehension skills of the inter students.

TSBIE likely to introduce jumbling system for Telangana inter practical exams

Meanwhile, the board is considering the option of introducing a jumbling system for Telangana inter practical exams in the current year.

If implemented, the students will have to appear for practical exams in different junior colleges. Currently, the students appear for the exams in their respective colleges.

Nepal plane crash: Relatives of 4 Indians yet to receive dead bodies

    [ad_1]

Kathmandu: The relatives of four Indians who died in a plane crash in Nepal are still waiting to receive the dead bodies of their family members despite spending their third day at a hospital here on Saturday.

Nepalese authorities on Tuesday started handing over to family members the bodies of those killed after Yeti Airlines’ aircraft with 72 people crashed minutes before landing in a river gorge in the resort city of Pokhara on Sunday.

Fifty-three Nepalese passengers and 15 foreign nationals, including 5 Indians, and four crew members were on board the aircraft when it crashed. The five Indians, all reportedly from Uttar Pradesh, have been identified as Abhisekh Kushwaha, 25, Bishal Sharma, 22, Anil Kumar Rajbhar, 27, Sonu Jaiswal, 35, and Sanjaya Jaiswal.

The body of Sanjaya Jaiswal was handed over to his family on Friday and taken back home.

However, the relatives of four other Indian nationals have been waiting for three days to receive the dead bodies of their kin.

Sonu Jaiswal’s father Rajendra Prasad Jaiswal was among the relatives waiting at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital to receive the bodies.

One of the relatives said they want to take back all four bodies of the Indians in a single consignment.

The body of Bishal Sharma was identified on Saturday, the hospital sources said.

The hospital completed postmortem on 49 dead bodies on Friday. Twenty-two dead bodies of Nepali nationals have been handed over to their families in Pokhara.

While a total of 12 dead bodies, including one of an Indian national, were handed over to their family members on Friday, on Saturday, the hospital authorities handed over 15 more dead bodies to the relatives.

According to a doctor involved in identifying the bodies, the signs provided by the family members were not sufficient to identify the dead bodies.

“We will try to verify the fingerprints of the dead bodies on Sunday,” the doctor said.

The Nepal Army said on Saturday it continued the search operation at the Seti River gorge and the surrounding areas on Saturday to find the remaining one body.

Meanwhile, a team of the European Union (EU) team that was planning to visit Nepal to undertake an ‘on-site evaluation’ of aviation safety has postponed its trip.

According to a statement issued by the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN), the planned visit of the EU’s technical team has been postponed for the time being.

In a joint statement issued on Friday, Director-General of the CAAN Pradeep Adhikari and EU’s Ambassador to Nepal Nona Deprez said that the scheduled visit of the on-site evaluation team to Nepal has been put off.

“Given the current context, related to the terrible accident and in mutual agreement, the EU and CAAN have reached the conclusion that it would be in our best interest to postpone a planned on-site assessment visit mandated by the EU Air Safety committee for the time being,” the statement said.

“The primary focus for CAAN at this time is on dealing with the aftermath of the accident. The European Union will continue to assist CAAN in its efforts to improve the aviation safety situation in Nepal,” it said.

Earlier in October last year, a team of the EU undertook a study on the aviation safety of Nepal and concluded that notable progress had been made in the country’s air safety.

The team had returned with a decision to send another team to carry out an on-site evaluation of the aviation safety of Nepal.

The EU has listed Nepal on the air safety list since 2013.

  • Exiled former Pak PM Nawaz likely to return, lead poll campaign: Minister

Exiled former Pak PM Nawaz likely to return, lead poll campaign: Minister

    [ad_1]

London: In exile since 2019, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN) supremo Nawaz Sharif is likely return to Pakistan, Geo News reported, adding that once back, he may chair the party’s parliamentary board for finalising candidates for the upcoming provincial elections in the country.

According to Geo News, the country’s Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah made the remark on Sharif’s return while interacting with the press in London. “Few senior party leaders, including myself, should resign (as ministers) to mobilise our election campaign along with Nawaz Sharif,” the report quoted Sanaullah as saying.

The buzz around Sharif’s return to Pakistan has gained ground amid the dissolution of the provincial assemblies of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Punjab, which were ruled by Imran Khan-led Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

Geo News quoted Sanaullah as saying that Sharif is likely to address public meetings across the two Punjab provinces upon his return.

Imran had to step down as Prime Minister in April last year after losing a no-confidence vote against him in the National Assembly. According to the Geo News report, Khan has since been stressing fresh elections in the country, claiming that early polls are the only solution to Pakistan’s ongoing economic and political crises.

In another big revelation, Sanaullah claimed Pakistan’s former army chief, General (retired) Qamar Javed Bajwa and ex-intelligence chief Lt Gen (retd) Faiz Hamid have admitted to their ‘wrongs’ in office on Friday, Geo News claimed.

“Nawaz Sharif’s stance has been clear: we were wronged. Now, the ones who wronged us have also admitted to their mistakes,” Geo News quoted Sanaullah as saying.

In a separate conversation with media persons earlier in the day, the Interior minister blamed the former Army and intelligence chiefs for the current ‘mess’ in the country.

  • Sports Ministry suspends WFI assistant secretary Vinod Tomar, cancels tournament

Sports Ministry suspends WFI assistant secretary Vinod Tomar, cancels tournament

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Sports Ministry on Saturday suspended Wrestling Federation of India’s (WFI) assistant secretary Vinod Tomar, a fallout of the grapplers’ allegations of sexual harassment and corruption against the sports body’s chief, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

It has decided to suspend Tomar, “with immediate effect, to ensure proper functioning of WFI”.

The ministry said it has also directed the WFI to suspend “all ongoing activities with immediate effect”, including the Ranking Tournament in Gonda, UP, Sharan’s stronghold.

This comes a day after Sports Minister Anurag Thakur announced the formation of an oversight committee to probe the charges levelled by some of the country’s top wrestlers, including Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik and Ravi Dahiya, against Sharan and his body.

Regarding Tomar, the ministry said in a letter, which is in possession of the PTI, that his presence will be “detrimental to the development of this high-priority discipline”.

“The Ministry has taken note of the reports about the functioning of the WFI, including the role of Shri Vinod Tomar and, has the reasons to believe that his continued presence will be detrimental to the development of this high-priority discipline,” the ministry said in the letter.

The aggrieved wrestlers had alleged that Tomar took bribes from athletes and was involved in financial corruption, helping him to build property worth crores.

According to sources, the ministry will announce the names of its oversight committee members on Sunday.

In a press release, the ministry said it “has communicated to the Wrestling Federation of India on Saturday that in view of the Government’s decision to appoint an Oversight Committee to investigate the various allegations raised by athletes against the Federation, WFI will suspend all ongoing activities with immediate effect, unless the Oversight Committee is formally appointed and takes over the day to day functioning of WFI”.

It added, “In view of the direction to suspend all activities immediately, the Sports Ministry has asked WFI to also cancel the ongoing Ranking Tournament in Gonda, UP.”

In this regard, the ministry has also asked the WFI to return the entry fees charged to participants for the ongoing event.

The oversight committee of the ministry will have the powers to take all decisions on matters concerning Indian wrestling while also overseeing the day-to-day affairs of the federation.

Earlier in the day, the WFI had rejected all the allegations, including that of sexual harassment against its president, and claimed that the wrestlers’ protest was motivated by a “hidden agenda to dislodge the current management”.

The WFI denied all the charges in its response to the government’s notice and asserted that “there is no scope for arbitrariness and mismanagement ” in the federation.

The ministry had sought an explanation from WFI after the country’s top wrestlers sat on a dharna and alleged that the federation chief sexually harassed women wrestlers and acts like a “dictator”.

Before the wrestlers agreed to end their protest, the Indian Olympic Association had on Friday formed a seven-member committee of its own, headed by M C Mary Kom, to investigate the charges against Sharan.

The IOA panel was constituted even as the wrestlers’ sit-in protest entered the third day.

Besides legendary boxer Mary Kom and wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt, the panel includes archer Dola Banerjee and Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWLF) president and IOA treasurer Sahdev Yadav.

The IOA committee also has two advocates — Talish Ray and Shlok Chandra — besides former shuttler and IOA joint secretary Alaknanda Ashok, who is its vice chairperson.

The decision was taken during the IOA’s emergency Executive Council meeting, which was attended by the likes of Olympic champion shooter Abhinav Bindra, Olympic bronze medallist Yogeshwar, along with IOA president PT Usha and joint secretary Kalyan Chaubey.
