Harris blasts DeSantis over Ukraine remarks, lack of experience

DeSantis, widely expected to announce a 2024 presidential campaign, has yet to announce such a run but has spent recent weeks making high-profile stops around the country — including in Iowa — to promote his new book.

The vice president chalked the comments up to what she said was DeSantis’ lack of experience on the world stage, contrasting her own experience meeting with world leaders with that of a regional lawmaker.

When you have that experience, you understand the need to stand “firm and clear about the significance of sovereignty and territorial integrity, the significance of standing firm against any nation that would try to take by force another nation,” Harris said.

Speaking on a radio show this week, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio struck a similar chord: “Well, I don’t know what he’s trying to do or what the goal is. Obviously, he doesn’t deal with foreign policy every day as governor.”

While backlash from Democrats was expected, rebukes from the right have been swift and decisive, especially among potential presidential contenders.

Former President Donald Trump accused the Florida governor of a “flip-flop,” noting DeSantis’ rather hawkish stance toward Russia while in Congress. Trump also accused his potential opponent of imitating his isolationist stance: “Whatever I want, he wants,” Trump told reporters.

Former ambassador to the United Nations and declared 2024 presidential candidate Nikki Haley, who said in her own Carlson questionnaire that aiding Ukraine is in the U.S. national security interest, agreed with Trump’s assessment of DeSantis. The Florida governor is mimicking the former president “first in his style, then on entitlement reform, and now on Ukraine,” she said in a statement. “Republicans deserve a choice, not an echo.”

  • Telangana man writes to Collector over lack of Kingfisher beer in shops

Telangana man writes to Collector over lack of Kingfisher beer in shops

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: With great sense of purpose, a Jagtial resident wrote to his district collector highlighting the lack of Kingfisher in the district. Not quite the bird, but the brand of beer.

Beeram Rajesh wrote a letter to the Jagtial District Collector on Monday highlighting the lack of ‘KF’ beers in wine shops.

“In the process of obtaining permissions they state that all kinds of liquor will be made available through their wine shop. However, after receiving the permissions, wine shops owners are selling only low quality beers,” said Rajesh in the letter.

He explained his concern for other alcoholic’s health, who are seemingly being forced to drink low quality alcohol as the wine shops don’t have ‘KF’ beer available and the income that the state government is losing out.

He also reasoned that many accidents take place when people, desperate to have the alcohol of their choice, are forced to travel to far away places to buy it.

He said the alcoholics who have no other option but to drink the low quality beer being offered in the wine shops face a risk of ‘Uric Acid’.

“Since the wine shops only have low quality alcohol available, people who consume alcohol are having to travel 20 to 30 kilometers to get alcohol. In this process, many accidents are taking place,” said Rajesh in the letter.

He alleged that belt shops have the KF brand beer available but it is priced very high at 200 to 300 rupees. He explained that the only way to get the alcohol of his choice is to buy the overly priced beer from the belt shops or travel to places far away.

He also expressed his concerns over the genuineness of the KF beers being sold at the belt shops.

“How are the belt shops getting ahold of KF beers that elude the wine shops and bars? Are they selling real beer or is it artificially manufactured?”

“When it is the government that gives permission to the wine shops, what rights do the wine shop owners have to sell only the alcohol of their choice?” he said.

He questioned the alleged silence of government officials who are standing by and watching the government’s income take a hit.

“When the officials who are stringent about the fact that only people with Government’s permissions should sell alcohol, why are they mum when the state government’s income is taking a hit?” asked an evidently upset Rajesh.

He said that the officials in the collector’s office responded positively to his complaint.

Whitmer dismisses lack of Dem enthusiasm for Biden

Whitmer noted that the poll question was not conducted as a matchup between candidates. Former President Donald Trump, who lost to Biden in 2020, has been the only Republican to announce a campaign — though others in the Republican Party have also teased potential 2024 ambitions, some more clearly than others.

Whitmer and the White House have both pointed to the Biden administration’s legislative accomplishments and Democrats’ performance in the midterms as proof of his ongoing electability, despite the recent polling.

Speaking on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Gov. Phil Murphy (D-N.J.) said support for Biden is likely to catch up to his achievements.

“I think there’s a lead lag factor here. I think we underestimate the trauma of the past several years,” he said, adding: “I don’t think you snap back from that overnight.”

  • Lack of clarity blurs KCR’s roadmap for a ‘Third Front’

Lack of clarity blurs KCR’s roadmap for a ‘Third Front’

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao had long been talking of an alternative to both the BJP and Congress and even made efforts to bring regional parties together. But his roadmap has remained ambiguous.

His move to turn the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) into Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) to play a key role in national politics may lead to confusion among opposition ranks, especially in the absence of any clarity as to how the party plans to expand to states ruled by opposition parties and what it wants to achieve.

According to political observers, the public speeches made by KCR, as the Chief Minister is popularly known, in recent weeks indicate that he is trying to put forth an alternative national agenda with strong focus on the Telangana model of development.

The BRS chief on several occasions stated that he was not looking to form a front of some parties to come to power.

Stating that the country has seen many fronts in the past, KCR has called for an alternative agenda and a new political force for the country’s development.

An observer pointed out that there has been a contradiction in what KCR says. On some occasions, he blamed both the BJP and Congress for all the problems faced by the country due to their wrong policies over the last 75 years.

At times, he also underlined the need to bring like-minded parties together to throw BJP out of power.

In August last year, he even gave a call for a “BJP-mukt Bharat” by 2024 by throwing out the saffron party from the country and protecting the nation from its “religious madness”.

The opposition camp has however, remained suspicious about KCR’s real intentions. The Congress party dubbed him ‘B’ team of the BJP.

“KCR has been impacting the Congress-led UPA umbrella. Barring the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), all the parties he is trying to join hands with were either part of UPA or were considered friendly to Congress,” observed analyst Palwai Raghavendra Reddy.

The analyst pointed out that KCR wooed parties like DMK, RJD, SP and JMM. This is seen as an attempt to isolate the Congress.

Last month, the maiden public meeting of BRS at Khammam was attended by the Chief Ministers of Delhi (Arvind Kejriwal), Punjab (Bhagwant Mann) and Kerala (Pinarayi Vijayan) as well as SP chief Akhilesh Yadav and CPI general secretary D. Raja.

While leaders from other parties praised KCR for taking the initiative of bringing together leaders of various opposition parties, there was no clarity if they are ready to work together. They were also silent on TRS turning into BRS to expand its footprint in various states.

Political observers say while all the speakers were unanimous on the need for the opposition parties to work together to throw the BJP out of power, they were not clear on how they planned to achieve the goal.

KCR used the occasion to take the leaders to Yadadri temple to show the renovation works undertaken by his government. The leaders of other parties also attended the inauguration of an integrated office complex in Bhadradri Kothagudem district and KCR also explained to them the Kanti Velugu programme undertaken by his government for free eye screening of 1.5 crore people.

At the public meeting, he made some promises the BRS would fulfil after coming to power at the Centre or by playing a key role in the formation of the next government.

KCR was expected to unveil the national agenda of BRS but he told the gathering that this would be done soon. With focus on his slogan of ‘ab ki baar kisaan sarkar’, he gave a glimpse of the agenda.

There was no clarity on how BRS plans to expand its footprints to states where non-BJP parties are in power.

KCR is planning another public meeting in Hyderabad on February 17, his birthday. It is scheduled after the inauguration of the new building of the Telangana Secretariat.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav, JD(U) national president Lalan Singh as representative of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar have been invited for the inauguration and the public meeting.

However, political analysts see this as another attempt by KCR to showcase the Telangana model to the state leaders.

The BRS government which named the new Secretariat complex after Dr B.R. Ambedkar, has also invited his grandson Prakash Ambedkar for the inauguration.

KCR had earlier stated that the new secretariat building will reflect the pride of Telangana and would stand as a role model for other states.

“KCR seems to be building a narrative for the Assembly elections scheduled to be held towards the end of the year. By inviting leaders of other parties and by organizing various programmes, he is trying to show that it is the Telangana model of development which everyone in the country is talking about. He apparently believes that this will ultimately help him win another term and at the same time project himself as pan-India leader,” says a senior journalist.

KCR has been planning a national foray since 2018. After retaining power in Telangana, he held a series of meetings with leaders of various parties including West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to cobble up together what was proposed to be a federal front.

However, with the BJP returning to power at the Centre in 2019 with a clear majority, all his hopes were dashed.

KCR, who often came under attack from Congress for supporting demonetization and even the three controversial farm legislations brought by the Central government, revived his efforts to form an alliance in 2021 after turning a bitter critic of the BJP-led government.

He visited Punjab, Bihar and Jharkhand to distribute assistance to families of soldiers killed in clashes with Chinese troops during the Galwan face-off and also to the kin of farmers who died during the protests against the three farm laws.

KCR has been trying to build a narrative around his national aspirations. He is highlighting the failures of the Centre during the last eight years and the achievements of the BRS government during the same period.

T Raghavendra Reddy believes that KCR and some of his fellow aspirants for the Prime Minister’s post might realise that Congress cannot be wished away from a contest, and the Grand Old Party is the only counterweight to the saffron party across many states.

“KCR is in a dilemma where he can neither align with Congress nor bring others together without Congress being in the equation,” he said.

When KCR first mooted the idea of a national alternative, he was targeting both BJP and Congress, blaming them for the problems faced by the country. This stand was not in sync with other regional parties who see BJP as the number one enemy and were not averse to joining hands with the Congress.

Last year, the BRS chief appeared more critical of BJP than Congress. He had even dropped hints of softening his stand towards Congress by saying the priority of all parties should be to throw out the Narendra Modi government at the Centre.

However, he subsequently preferred his previous stand of ‘equi-distance’ from both the BJP and Congress. It was for this reason that the BRS stayed away from the meeting of opposition parties called by Mamata Banerjee to discuss the strategy for Presidential elections.

KCR made it clear that his party will not be part of a meeting where the Congress was invited.

Since BRS considers Congress as its main opponent in Telangana, KCR did not wish to be seen rubbing shoulders with the leaders of that party at the national level.

However, in the interest of larger opposition unity, KCR declared support to Yashwant Sinha, the joint candidate of the opposition parties in the presidential election.

KCR’s son and TRS working president K.T. Rama Rao along with party MPs was present when Sinha filed the nomination.

Though KCR held a series of meetings last year with leaders of various political parties including Shiv Sena, DMK, RJD, SP and JD (S), no consensus could be reached on forging a front as an alternative to both BJP and Congress.

The much-awaited meeting between KCR and his West Bengal counterpart did not take place and despite the attempts made in the past KCR could not have Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy on board as both the BJD and YSRCP continue to extend support to the Modi government on key bills in Parliament.

  • Filthy Washrooms To Lack of Testing and Hostel Facilities, GMC Baramuala Has It All

    [ad_1]

    by Masrat Nabi

BARAMULLA: The Associate Hospital of Government Medical College Baramulla has failed to come up as an alternative tertiary care health facility for the north Kashmir districts. The hospital lacks diagnostic facilities, hygienic washrooms and also proper accommodation facilities for students.

The hospital’s washrooms are filthy with the potential to further accentuate an illness or even start a new one.

“Hospitals are meant to make us feel safe and provide an environment where one receives proper medical attention,” Muneera Hassan, a patient said. “But these washrooms here are in a mess.”

A group of patients said that they feel that they are at risk of contracting new infections due to the poor hygiene level of the hospital.

Safeena, a patient said, “The air stinks, there is urine on the floor, and the water faucets are broken.”

Suraya Malik said, “Once I opened the door of a toilet at the hospital I had to immediately step back because a musty, unpleasant odour permeated the air. I could barely make out the shape of the commode as it was covered in mould and mildew. A thick layer of grime had accumulated on the walls and floor, and it was clear that no attempt had been made to clean this public space.

Suraya then opted for the washroom of a nearby restaurant.

While unhygienic washrooms are a part and parcel of the hospital, the facility also doesn’t conduct the ECHO test for several months. An ECHO is an important device used to evaluate the condition of the heart and is essential for patients suffering from cardiac ailments. It checks the structure of the heart and surrounding blood vessels, analyses how blood flows through them, and assesses the pumping chambers of the heart.

The ECHO test facility was started a few years ago at the hospital after Jammu and Kashmir Bank donated the device under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

However, the hospital authorities have failed to ensure that the device was regularly maintained. The ECHO device granted to the hospital by Jammu and Kashmir Bank was in reality secured by the civil society of Baramulla who persuaded the higher officials of the lead bank.

Like the washrooms and the ECHO, the students pursuing their MBBS course from the Government Medical College Baramulla are also in the doldrums.

The students have been complaining about the non-availability of hostel facilities within the premises along with the lack of transport facilities as well. The situation has forced many students to opt for costly private accommodations wherefrom commuting is also expensive. The college has students from as far as Jammu and Ladakh who are forced to take these private accommodations adding to their monthly expenses.

Also, the students have raised concerns about the limited availability of laboratories in the college.

A student said, “Anatomy lab isn’t a proper one.  We were supposed to do a practical session at the forensic lab but that never happened. We had to contend with digital content. This presents some difficulties since online content cannot provide the same level of interactivity and first-hand experience that a laboratory setting would have given us.”

A group of students said, “We were promised hostel facilities within the campus. Completion of the hostel seems a distant dream given the slow pace of work,”

Medical Superintendent GMC Baramulla Dr Parvez Masoodi said that on daily basis they receive around 7000 patients for which limited washrooms are available. “We have already put people for proper sanitation in the hospital. But with such a huge influx of patients, it is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain hygiene, yet the health of our patients and staff remains a priority.”

“I have also implemented strict cleaning protocols to ensure that every single washroom is cleaned and disinfected thoroughly at least twice a day, and we will expand the infrastructure and build more washrooms so that we can provide a safe and healthy environment for everyone.”

Principal GMC Baramulla Dr Rubi Reshi didn’t want to comment on the story.

Lack of ability to tackle Ukraine war reflects UNSC’s ‘dysfunctional’ system: UNGA prez

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The “dysfunctional” system of the UN Security Council has been reflected in the “absurd” situation arising out of one of its permanent members attacking Ukraine and the global body’s failure to address it, UN General Assembly President Csaba Korosi said on Monday.

In an address at a think-tank, Korosi called for urgent reform of the UNSC to reflect the changing balance of global power and economic heft of various countries and criticized the slow process that was started around 17 years back to bring the changes.

India has been strongly demanding permanent membership in the UNSC considering the size of its population and role in international affairs. The current permanent members of the UNSC are China, France, Russia, the UK and the US.

Addressing a group of diplomats, strategic affairs experts, and academicians at the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA), the UNGA president also wondered why there is still no agreement on a text to take forward the reform process.

“Does it have a time frame? No, I think it does not. Does it have a negotiated text, no it does not…Have you ever seen a negotiated process that has no text to negotiate? Have you ever seen a negotiating process that has no clear-cut timeframe for when to deliver,” he asked.

“Why the member states cannot do it? Because the interests are very much divided, and for some, it is more preferable to see the current dysfunctional stage than to embark on a reform,” he said.

The Hungarian diplomat, who is currently serving as the President of the 77th United Nations General Assembly, commended India’s call during its recent membership of the UN Security Council, for peace in Ukraine and its humanitarian aid for people hit by the conflict.

Korosi said the war in Ukraine has caused untold suffering and displacements and “unleashed” an energy and food crisis across the globe.

The president of the UN General Assembly, on a three-day visit to India also lauded New Delhi for sending medical aid and Covid-19 vaccines to a large number of countries to help them deal with the pandemic.

Korosi also complimented India for the safe evacuation of its citizens from Ukraine after Russia started its invasion of that country in February last year.

On the reform of the UN Security Council, the UNGA President urged the member states to make compromises and consider even making partial agreements under a step-by-step approach to reform of the UNSC. “Otherwise it will be very very difficult.”

Korosi identified the Ukraine war and lack of agreement on a text for taking forward the reform process.

“There are two major problems that we are facing. One was brought up by the war in Ukraine. The Security Council was created in 1945 to be the prime responsible organ for catering to international peace and security, to make sure that there would be no more wars,” he said.

The aim of the UNSC was to avert war and large-scale destruction, and, therefore, extraordinary powers have been placed into the hands of the Council, he said.

“What if the Security Council members, one of them, a permanent member that has those extraordinary powers including the Veto power, is the one attacking its neighbor? It created a situation where the Security Council is incapable of addressing this issue,” Korosi said.

“Since the very beginning of the war in Ukraine, the Security Council has not been able to take any decision on the war on Ukraine. So it is an absurd situation which is describing the dysfunction of the Council,” he said.

The UNGA president millions of people who were expecting the UN to deliver were frustrated by the UNSC’s approach towards the Ukraine crisis.

“If millions of people were expecting the Security Council to make sure that wars would not be repeated, they would be frustrated. I can understand that,” he said.

Korosi said the composition and the working method of the UNSC were based on the situation in 1945-46 following the Second World War.

“Since then, much has changed. The world economy has changed, the balance of power in the world has changed.. so it is absolutely understandable that the countries and the leaders of the world are more and more impatiently demanding that the Security Council should be reformed,” he said.

The UNGA president said the reform process can be taken forward if the member states want.

“It is up to the member states to come up with some kind of shared understanding. Some kind of compromise. I very strongly asked the member states to think very hard. Do you want to spend another 17 years on a process or do you want to see results as soon as possible.” he said.

“If they like to go for the second (option), they will have to make compromises, they will have to make agreements. Maybe partial agreements. Maybe a step-by-step approach. Otherwise, it will be very very difficult,” she said.
