  • Kashmiri Handicraft Exports Set To Hit Rs 1000 Cr In 2023

Kashmiri Handicraft Exports Set To Hit Rs 1000 Cr In 2023

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Following the unexpected decline in the aftermath of the abrogation of Article 370 and the subsequent COVID-19 pandemic, it is expected that the export of Kashmiri handicrafts will amount to Rs 1000 crore during the fiscal year of 2022-2023.

In the wake of the abrogation of Article 370 on August 5, 2019, followed by the COVID-19 pandemic which has had a devastating impact on the global economy, the region of Kashmir remained closed for several weeks. Despite these challenges, it is encouraging to note that the export of handicrafts from Kashmir has increased during the fiscal year of 2022-2023.

According to official figures obtained by the news agency KINS, exports amounting to Rs 728.99 crore were recorded during the first three quarters of the fiscal year 2022-2023. Among these exports, Kashmiri carpets alone accounted for over Rs. 300 crore to various countries. Other notable handicraft items that were exported include shawls, paper machie, wood carving, and crewel/chain stitch products.

Mahmood Ahmad Shah, the Director of Handicrafts and Handlooms J&K, has reported that the figures for the export of Kashmiri handicrafts have been finalized for only the first three quarters of the current fiscal year. However, he expressed optimism that the export of these handicrafts is likely to reach Rs. 1000 crore by the end of the fiscal year 2022-2023. While it may take some time to confirm these final figures, Shah is confident in the positive trajectory of the industry.

During the 2021-22 fiscal year, Kashmir’s world-renowned handicraft products, which are known for their high quality and handcrafted nature, were exported to various markets for a total worth of Rs. 563.13 crore. Among these exports, carpets were the top-selling item with exports reaching Rs. 251.06 crore.

The Gulf and European countries represent a major customer base for Kashmiri carpets and Pashmina shawls. The iconic Kashmiri carpets are widely recognized for their intricate designs and impeccable craftsmanship, with some of the finest examples created during the Mughal-Afghan and Sikh-Dogra periods being showcased in prestigious museums across the globe. Recently, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha reported an unprecedented growth in the handicraft and handloom sector of the Union Territory during the fiscal year 2022-2023. He attributed this success to several important measures taken by the administration to support and promote the industry.

“We are committed to provide training, design, technology, financial and other infrastructure support that will significantly contribute to the growth of this sector and earnings of artisans,” stated the Lieutenant Governor. “More than three lakh artisans are registered with the department. A number of steps like enhanced financial assistance, 7 per cent interest subvention, training, assistance to 3,000 Self Help Groups and cooperative societies have been taken to accelerate the development of this sector,” the LG said. • Kashmiri farmers spreading fragrance of success: PM Modi

Kashmiri farmers spreading fragrance of success: PM Modi

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi Sunday said that Kashmiri farmers were spreading the fragrance of their success.

In his monthly radio broadcast ‘Mann Ki Baat’, the PM talked about the farmers who had shifted towards growing lavender and the benefits they were receiving through the government’s aroma scheme.

“Another effort by the Kashmiri farmers is spreading the fragrance of its success. There is a small town Bhaderwah in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir. The farmers there traditionally used to grow maize, but some farmers decided to do something innovative. They shifted towards floriculture. Under this, around 2500 farmers are growing lavender. They have also benefitted from the aroma scheme of the government. This has increased their income several times. And today, along with the lavender, the fragrance of their success is also spreading,” he said.

The PM pointed out the rising demand for lotus stems in Kashmir known by local name ‘Nadru’.

“Whenever we talk about Kashmir or Srinagar, the pictures of the mountains and Dal Lake come in front of us. We all want to enjoy the scenic beauty, but there is one more speciality attached to it. Dal Lake is also known for its delicious lotus stems. They are known by different names in the country, and in Kashmir, they are referred to as Nadru,” he said.

The PM said that looking at the rising demand for Nadru, the farmers had created a Farmers Producer Organisation (FPO), and 250 farmers had become a part of it.

“Today, the farmers are able to export the produce of FPOs to foreign countries. Recently, they sent two sets to UAE. This is not just taking up the name of Kashmir, but also increasing the income of the farmers,” he said.

The PM also paid tribute to the woman power.

“This is the time of Navratri, the time to worship Shakti. Today, the potential of India which is emerging from a new perspective, our woman power has a very big role in it. Recently, many such examples have emerged before us. You must have seen Asia’s first female loco pilot Surekha Yadav on social media. Surekha ji, setting another record, has also become the first woman loco pilot of Vande Bharat Express as well,” he said.

Referring to film producer Guneet Monga, whose documentary ‘The Elephant Whisperers’ won the Oscar award earlier this month, the PM said, “This month producer Guneet Monga and director Kartiki Gonsalves brought laurels to the country by winning an Oscar for their documentary, ‘The Elephant Whisperers’.

“Sister Jyotirmayi Mohanty, Scientist of Bhabha Atomic Research Center has also notched another achievement for the country. Jyotirmoyee has received a special award from IUPAC in the field of chemistry and chemical engineering. Earlier this year, India’s Under-19 women’s cricket team created history by winning the T-20 World Cup.”

Referring to women in politics, he said, “If you look at politics, a new beginning has taken place in Nagaland. In Nagaland, for the first time in 75 years, two women legislators have reached the Vidhan Sabha through their victory. One of them has also been made a minister in the Government of Nagaland, that is, for the first time the people of the state have also got a woman minister.”

The PM also mentioned women members of the NDRF contingent, which had gone for relief and rehabilitation work in quake-hit Turkey. “India has also deployed a women-only platoon in the peacekeeping force under the UN mission,” he said. The PM also referred to Group Captain Shalija Dhami, the first woman Air Force officer to get a Command Appointment in a Combat Unit. He also mentioned Captain Shiva Chauhan of the Indian Army, the first woman officer to be posted at Siachen. The PM also highlighted the importance of organ donation and solar energy in his broadcast.

  • India must immediately end crackdown on Kashmiri human rights defenders: UN expert

India must immediately end crackdown on Kashmiri human rights defenders: UN expert

    [ad_1]

United Nations: A top UN expert on Friday asked India to immediately end the crackdown on Kashmiri human rights defenders and urged New Delhi to release and close all investigations initiated against them.

Mary Lawlor, UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders made this comment days after the National Investigation Agency (NIA) formally arrested jailed Jammu and Kashmir Coalition of Civil Society programme coordinator Khurram Parvez in connection with its NGO terror funding case.

The NIA said the case relates to the terror funding of proscribed terrorist organisations, such as LeT and Hizb-ul-Mujahideen, by certain NGOs, trusts and societies based in the Valley.

“Indian authorities appear to be intensifying the long-standing repression of Kashmiri civil society,” Lawlor said. “The State must respect its human rights obligations and be held accountable where it violates them,” she said in a statement. Parvez has been in prison since his arrest by the NIA in November 2021 for anti-national activities, including collecting information on vital installations and deployment and movement of security forces, procuring secret official documents and passing the same to his LeT handlers for monetary consideration. He was charge-sheeted along with six others on May 13 last year.

India has previously said that authorities in the country act against violations of law strictly in accordance with established judicial processes. The UN expert said prior to Parvez’s arrest, a former associate of the Jammu and Kashmir Coalition of Civil Societies, human rights activist and journalist Irfan Mehraj, was also arrested in the same case on March 20 from Srinagar and transferred to New Delhi.

“The Jammu and Kashmir Coalition of Civil Society (JKCCS) carries out essential work monitoring human rights. Their research and analysis of human rights violations are of immense value to international organisations seeking to ensure accountability and non-repetition of abuses,” Lawlor explained.

The statement issued in Geneva said UN experts have repeatedly highlighted “grave concerns” regarding the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, which allows the designation of any individual as a “terrorist,” bypassing the requirement to establish membership or association with banned outfits.

The expert also called for the release and the closing of investigations against Kashmiri human rights defenders. “The arrest and detention of persons for exercising their human rights are arbitrary. There must be accountability and remedy where such abusive actions are taken,” Lawlor added.

  • Kashmiri politicians attack Centre over Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification

Kashmiri politicians attack Centre over Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification

    [ad_1]

Srinagar: PDP president Mehbooba Mufti on Friday said Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification from the Lok Sabha has proved right apprehensions he had expressed in London recently.

“GOI is clearly rattled by RG for emerging as a powerful challenger pre 2024 elections. Since BJP can’t fight him politically, they are now subverting institutions because he refuses to do a Savarkar. The apprehensions he voiced in London are tragically being proven right,” Mehbooba tweeted.

Commenting on Gandhi’s disqualification, CPI(M) leader Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami said the central government was trying to control all institutions in the country for its advantage.

“I had never thought that the democracy of our country would be brought to such lows. For a long time, the government has been trying to take control of the Parliament and other institutions,” Tarigami told PTI.

He said the government was not in the mood of tolerating dissent in any form.

“Today the highest body of the country has been affected. Such a haste is astonishing! The court has barely announced the verdict, suspended the sentence and given time to him to appeal. The parliament has no time to discuss the daily issues of the common man. It has no patience to listen to the opposition voices and criticism,” he said.

“This is a warning not just to the opposition but people of the entire country that we are facing the same situation which we did not expect even during the emergency. This is not about Rahul Gandhi alone, this is a punishment for speaking the truth,” he added.

National Conference spokesman Imran Nabi Dar said today was not a good day for democracy.

“The speed with which the Lok Sabha secretariat has disqualified Rahul Gandhi raises a lot of questions. The other issue is that the defamation law under which this was done needs to be reviewed,” he said.

Dar said the move to disqualify Gandhi seems to be a fall out of the success of the Bharat Jodo Yatra. “Otherwise, the ministers in the same government have named Rahul Gandhi so many times.”

“We will support all such efforts which will strengthen the democracy in the country and will oppose all those forces which try to harm the democracy,” Dar said.
