After chilly winter season, Hyderabad may witness harsh summer

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The residents of Hyderabad who were witnessing the chilly winter season for the past few weeks are likely to see harsh summer in the coming months as El Nino event may make 2023 hotter.

The last three years were La Nino years whereas, the upcoming year is likely to be El Nino which not only makes summer harsher but also results in monsoon failure.

What are El Nino and La Nino?

El Nino and La Nino are two climate patterns. While El Nino is known for the abnormal warming of surface water in the eastern tropical pacific ocean whereas, La Nino results in the unusual cooling of the tropical eastern pacific.

Due to this unusual warming and cooling of surface water, the monsoon in India is adversely affected. In intense La Nino, flood poses risk to crops whereas, in El Nino, the agriculture sector faces drought conditions.

Their impact on seasons in Hyderabad

The duration of the La Nino event is between one to three years whereas, El Nino continues for less than a year.

For the past three years, Hyderabad along with other parts of the country was seeing chilly winter season and good monsoon due to La Nino, however, El Nino which is likely to be witnessed in the upcoming months may make summer hotter.

Hyderabad may see harsh summer after chilly winter

During the past few weeks, Hyderabad saw chilly winter season. The minimum temperate dropped to 6.5 degrees Celsius last week.

However, in the next few months, the city is likely to see rise in temperature. Even the monsoon season in the city is likely to be impacted due to the El Nino event.

In 2015, the El Nino event has significantly increased the temperature in the city during the summer. It has also affected rainfall and crop output in India.

  • Demand to postpone Telangana inter practical exams rises

Demand to postpone Telangana inter practical exams rises

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Several students are demanding the postponement of Telangana inter practical exams alleging that no practical classes were conducted in their colleges. The exams are scheduled to be conducted in February.

Some of them are of the opinion that the practical exams should be conducted after inter theory examinations that are scheduled to be held in March.

No practical class conducted in inter first year

In some junior colleges, practical classes are not conducted in inter first. In the second year too, the classes are held just before the examination thereby leaving students confused.

In several colleges, practical classes are conducted at the end of the academic year when students have to focus on the theory examination.

Some colleges don’t even have proper equipment needed to conduct lab.

Students fear drop in overall percentage

The practical marks play a significant role in the overall percentage in inter. Because of it, students are worried that their percentage may dip due to poor performance in the practical exams.

MPC students have to appear for practical exams in Physics and Chemistry whereas, BiPC students have to appear for four subjects viz., Botany, Zoology, Physics, and Chemistry.

English likely to be added to Telangana inter practical exams

Telangana State Board of Intermediate Education (TSBIE) is gearing up to introduce English practical lab in intermediate courses.

From next academic year, the English practical exam is likely to be conducted for 20 marks by reducing the weightage of the English theory exam to 80.

The board has taken this decision to improve the spoken and comprehension skills of the inter students.

TSBIE likely to introduce jumbling system for Telangana inter practical exams

Meanwhile, the board is considering the option of introducing a jumbling system for Telangana inter practical exams in the current year.

If implemented, the students will have to appear for practical exams in different junior colleges. Currently, the students appear for the exams in their respective colleges.

Nepal plane crash: Relatives of 4 Indians yet to receive dead bodies

    [ad_1]

Kathmandu: The relatives of four Indians who died in a plane crash in Nepal are still waiting to receive the dead bodies of their family members despite spending their third day at a hospital here on Saturday.

Nepalese authorities on Tuesday started handing over to family members the bodies of those killed after Yeti Airlines’ aircraft with 72 people crashed minutes before landing in a river gorge in the resort city of Pokhara on Sunday.

Fifty-three Nepalese passengers and 15 foreign nationals, including 5 Indians, and four crew members were on board the aircraft when it crashed. The five Indians, all reportedly from Uttar Pradesh, have been identified as Abhisekh Kushwaha, 25, Bishal Sharma, 22, Anil Kumar Rajbhar, 27, Sonu Jaiswal, 35, and Sanjaya Jaiswal.

The body of Sanjaya Jaiswal was handed over to his family on Friday and taken back home.

However, the relatives of four other Indian nationals have been waiting for three days to receive the dead bodies of their kin.

Sonu Jaiswal’s father Rajendra Prasad Jaiswal was among the relatives waiting at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital to receive the bodies.

One of the relatives said they want to take back all four bodies of the Indians in a single consignment.

The body of Bishal Sharma was identified on Saturday, the hospital sources said.

The hospital completed postmortem on 49 dead bodies on Friday. Twenty-two dead bodies of Nepali nationals have been handed over to their families in Pokhara.

While a total of 12 dead bodies, including one of an Indian national, were handed over to their family members on Friday, on Saturday, the hospital authorities handed over 15 more dead bodies to the relatives.

According to a doctor involved in identifying the bodies, the signs provided by the family members were not sufficient to identify the dead bodies.

“We will try to verify the fingerprints of the dead bodies on Sunday,” the doctor said.

The Nepal Army said on Saturday it continued the search operation at the Seti River gorge and the surrounding areas on Saturday to find the remaining one body.

Meanwhile, a team of the European Union (EU) team that was planning to visit Nepal to undertake an ‘on-site evaluation’ of aviation safety has postponed its trip.

According to a statement issued by the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN), the planned visit of the EU’s technical team has been postponed for the time being.

In a joint statement issued on Friday, Director-General of the CAAN Pradeep Adhikari and EU’s Ambassador to Nepal Nona Deprez said that the scheduled visit of the on-site evaluation team to Nepal has been put off.

“Given the current context, related to the terrible accident and in mutual agreement, the EU and CAAN have reached the conclusion that it would be in our best interest to postpone a planned on-site assessment visit mandated by the EU Air Safety committee for the time being,” the statement said.

“The primary focus for CAAN at this time is on dealing with the aftermath of the accident. The European Union will continue to assist CAAN in its efforts to improve the aviation safety situation in Nepal,” it said.

Earlier in October last year, a team of the EU undertook a study on the aviation safety of Nepal and concluded that notable progress had been made in the country’s air safety.

The team had returned with a decision to send another team to carry out an on-site evaluation of the aviation safety of Nepal.

The EU has listed Nepal on the air safety list since 2013.

  • Exiled former Pak PM Nawaz likely to return, lead poll campaign: Minister

Exiled former Pak PM Nawaz likely to return, lead poll campaign: Minister

    [ad_1]

London: In exile since 2019, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN) supremo Nawaz Sharif is likely return to Pakistan, Geo News reported, adding that once back, he may chair the party’s parliamentary board for finalising candidates for the upcoming provincial elections in the country.

According to Geo News, the country’s Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah made the remark on Sharif’s return while interacting with the press in London. “Few senior party leaders, including myself, should resign (as ministers) to mobilise our election campaign along with Nawaz Sharif,” the report quoted Sanaullah as saying.

The buzz around Sharif’s return to Pakistan has gained ground amid the dissolution of the provincial assemblies of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Punjab, which were ruled by Imran Khan-led Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

Geo News quoted Sanaullah as saying that Sharif is likely to address public meetings across the two Punjab provinces upon his return.

Imran had to step down as Prime Minister in April last year after losing a no-confidence vote against him in the National Assembly. According to the Geo News report, Khan has since been stressing fresh elections in the country, claiming that early polls are the only solution to Pakistan’s ongoing economic and political crises.

In another big revelation, Sanaullah claimed Pakistan’s former army chief, General (retired) Qamar Javed Bajwa and ex-intelligence chief Lt Gen (retd) Faiz Hamid have admitted to their ‘wrongs’ in office on Friday, Geo News claimed.

“Nawaz Sharif’s stance has been clear: we were wronged. Now, the ones who wronged us have also admitted to their mistakes,” Geo News quoted Sanaullah as saying.

In a separate conversation with media persons earlier in the day, the Interior minister blamed the former Army and intelligence chiefs for the current ‘mess’ in the country.

  • Sports Ministry suspends WFI assistant secretary Vinod Tomar, cancels tournament

Sports Ministry suspends WFI assistant secretary Vinod Tomar, cancels tournament

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Sports Ministry on Saturday suspended Wrestling Federation of India’s (WFI) assistant secretary Vinod Tomar, a fallout of the grapplers’ allegations of sexual harassment and corruption against the sports body’s chief, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

It has decided to suspend Tomar, “with immediate effect, to ensure proper functioning of WFI”.

The ministry said it has also directed the WFI to suspend “all ongoing activities with immediate effect”, including the Ranking Tournament in Gonda, UP, Sharan’s stronghold.

This comes a day after Sports Minister Anurag Thakur announced the formation of an oversight committee to probe the charges levelled by some of the country’s top wrestlers, including Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik and Ravi Dahiya, against Sharan and his body.

Regarding Tomar, the ministry said in a letter, which is in possession of the PTI, that his presence will be “detrimental to the development of this high-priority discipline”.

“The Ministry has taken note of the reports about the functioning of the WFI, including the role of Shri Vinod Tomar and, has the reasons to believe that his continued presence will be detrimental to the development of this high-priority discipline,” the ministry said in the letter.

The aggrieved wrestlers had alleged that Tomar took bribes from athletes and was involved in financial corruption, helping him to build property worth crores.

According to sources, the ministry will announce the names of its oversight committee members on Sunday.

In a press release, the ministry said it “has communicated to the Wrestling Federation of India on Saturday that in view of the Government’s decision to appoint an Oversight Committee to investigate the various allegations raised by athletes against the Federation, WFI will suspend all ongoing activities with immediate effect, unless the Oversight Committee is formally appointed and takes over the day to day functioning of WFI”.

It added, “In view of the direction to suspend all activities immediately, the Sports Ministry has asked WFI to also cancel the ongoing Ranking Tournament in Gonda, UP.”

In this regard, the ministry has also asked the WFI to return the entry fees charged to participants for the ongoing event.

The oversight committee of the ministry will have the powers to take all decisions on matters concerning Indian wrestling while also overseeing the day-to-day affairs of the federation.

Earlier in the day, the WFI had rejected all the allegations, including that of sexual harassment against its president, and claimed that the wrestlers’ protest was motivated by a “hidden agenda to dislodge the current management”.

The WFI denied all the charges in its response to the government’s notice and asserted that “there is no scope for arbitrariness and mismanagement ” in the federation.

The ministry had sought an explanation from WFI after the country’s top wrestlers sat on a dharna and alleged that the federation chief sexually harassed women wrestlers and acts like a “dictator”.

Before the wrestlers agreed to end their protest, the Indian Olympic Association had on Friday formed a seven-member committee of its own, headed by M C Mary Kom, to investigate the charges against Sharan.

The IOA panel was constituted even as the wrestlers’ sit-in protest entered the third day.

Besides legendary boxer Mary Kom and wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt, the panel includes archer Dola Banerjee and Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWLF) president and IOA treasurer Sahdev Yadav.

The IOA committee also has two advocates — Talish Ray and Shlok Chandra — besides former shuttler and IOA joint secretary Alaknanda Ashok, who is its vice chairperson.

The decision was taken during the IOA’s emergency Executive Council meeting, which was attended by the likes of Olympic champion shooter Abhinav Bindra, Olympic bronze medallist Yogeshwar, along with IOA president PT Usha and joint secretary Kalyan Chaubey.

  • Why The Society Must Get Up To Fight Drug Addiction?

Why The Society Must Get Up To Fight Drug Addiction?

    [ad_1]

    by Bilal Gani

Civil society groups need to be mobilised to stop drug trafficking at the local level. Parents should monitor the activities of their children and protect them from getting addicted to drugs and falling into the clutches of drug addicts.

Drug addiction is a hot topic in Jammu and Kashmir because there is an alarming increase in drug addiction cases. The recent extremely upsetting report by the Government Medical College’s Psychiatry department has revealed that Kashmir has surpassed Punjab in drug abuse cases and is currently at the number two position among the top drug abuser states in the country. With the Northeast topping the drug abuse list, Kashmir is not far behind. Jammu and Kashmir is on the powder keg of drug addiction.

Addiction is a neuropsychological disorder characterised by a persistent and intense urge to engage in certain behaviours, one of which is the usage of a drug, despite substantial harm and other negative consequences. Drug addiction, also called substance use disorder, is a disease that affects a person’s brain and behaviour and leads to an inability to control the use of a legal or illegal drug or medicine. Substances such as alcohol, marijuana and nicotine are considered drugs. When you are addicted, you may continue using the drug despite the harm it causes.

Drug addiction can start with the experimental use of a recreational drug in social situations, and, for some people, drug use becomes more frequent. For others, particularly with opioids, drug addiction begins when they take prescribed medicines or receive them from others who have prescriptions.

Globally, some 35 million people are estimated to suffer from drug use disorders who require medical treatment, according to the latest World Drug Report, released by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).  The most widely used drug globally continues to be cannabis, with an estimated 188 million people having used the drug in 2017.

As per the study conducted by Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences Kashmir (IMHANS-K) titled Prevalence and Pattern of Substance Use in 10 districts of Kashmir: A 2022 survey, Jammu and Kashmir has surpassed the number of drug abuse cases in Punjab.

Thousands of youth in Kashmir are slipping into the dark alleys of drug addiction as the valley has been flooded with a huge quantity of heroin usage. The Jammu and Kashmir administration had said as per a consumption survey there are at least six lakh residents affected by drug related issues in the region.

Over 33 thousand syringes are used to inject heroin by drug abusers in the Kashmir on a daily basis. Heroin is among the most common drugs used by these abusers. The study shows 90 percent of drug abusers are using heroin while the rest are using cocaine, brown sugar, and marijuana. The survey has also revealed that most of the drug abusers are in the age group of 17-33 years. Unemployed youth are the main consumers of these drugs. And the number of drug abusers in the valley has crossed 67000, while 33000 are injected heroin using syringes. Drug use has become an easy escape from the fluctuating situations of life.

Among the most potential causes attributed to the skyrocketing drug abuse in Kashmir are, an unusual increase in psychiatric disorders, the uncertainty of the conflict, unemployment among the youth and non-availability of recreational activities.

The youth see it as an escape from the uncertainty and trauma of living in a conflict region. But it has unnecessarily taken a heavy toll on youth who are the future of the society.

Kashmir is in the grip of an epidemic and the biggest victims of this epidemic are  youth.  Over the last few years, there has been an extraordinary increase in crimes in Kashmir.  It is said that the main reason for these crimes is the increasing use of drugs among the youth. Drug use has become a scourge,  which is giving rise to many social evils. The growing trend of drugs in the Valley should be of concern to the society.

    Drug Peddler
Couple held for drug peddling in Hazratbal on September 30, 2022 by Jammu and Kashmir Police.

Diagnosing drug addiction (substance use disorder) requires a thorough evaluation and often includes an assessment by a psychiatrist, a psychologist, or a licensed alcohol and drug counsellor. Although there’s no cure for drug addiction, treatment options can help you overcome an addiction and stay drug-free.

The eradication of drug addiction needs a multi-pronged approach. There is an urgent need for legal, social and religious measures to prevent drug addiction.  Although the government has taken strict measures to eradicate the scourge of drugs, several serious measures are needed to eradicate this epidemic.  The laws that are in force for the prevention of drug abuse should be implemented in a better way and these laws should be enforced and made stricter.  The cultivation, sale and misuse of cannabis and opium should be completely banned.  It is necessary to have cooperation between the administration and the people.  Only then can our society get rid of this evil.

    Sahir Bilal
    Bilal Gani

There is an urgent need for measures not only by the government but also by society to end this scourge. Civil society groups need to be mobilised to stop drug trafficking at the local level. Parents should monitor the activities of their children and protect them from getting addicted to drugs and falling into the clutches of drug addicts. Although there has been a lot of awareness among people about the harmful effects of drugs, this awareness needs to be spread to those areas and people who are unaware of it.

Another aspect of drug abuse prevention is the rehabilitation of victims of this scourge. But recovery must be consistent and victim-focused. The rehabilitation centres should take proper care of the psychological and emotional needs of the victims so that they can fully recover and move towards a prosperous future.  These rehabilitation measures include preventive education and awareness building, capacity building, skill development, vocational training and livelihood support for ex-drug addicts, among other relevant measures to stop this epidemic before it is too late.

As gold is also a commodity, its rates depend on demand and supply. In case of any uncertainty, the rates of yellow metal increase drastically as investors consider it save heaven.

Air India ‘pee-gate’: Delhi court extends Shankar Mishra’s judicial custody

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Patiala House Court on Saturday extended the judicial custody of Shankar Mishra, the man accused of urinating on an elderly female co-passenger in a drunk state on board a New York-New Delhi Air India flight in November last year, by 14 days.

On January 7, the court had sent Mishra to 14-day judicial custody, which was extended till February 4 on Saturday.

Earlier, in the wake of Air India banning Mishra from flying for four months on the basis of its internal committee report, his legal counsel had opposed the findings of the panel, saying that they are ready to file an appeal.

“We respect the authority and mandate of the internal inquiry committee, but we disagree with its findings and are already in the process of challenging this decision in accordance with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation’s (DGCA) civil aviation requirements for unruly passengers,” Mishra’s lawyers had said.

Aviation regulator DGCA had also imposed a fine of Rs 30 lakh on Air India besides suspended the licence of the pilot-in-command for three months in connection with the Air India urination case.

Moreover, the regulator had imposed a penalty of Rs 3 lakh on the director of inflight services of Air India for failing to discharge her duties on November 26, 2022.

The incident of passenger misbehaviour which occurred on the AI-102 flight from New York to New Delhi came to the notice of DGCA on January 4.

After Mishra claimed that the complainant had soiled her own seat, the latter had rubbished the allegation, saying it was “completely false and concocted”.

“The said allegation is also in complete contradiction and a complete volte-face of the statements and the pleaded case of the accused in his bail application,” she had said.

The victim had said that her intention has all along been to ensure that institutional changes are made so that no individual has to go through the “horrendous experience” she went through.

“Instead of being remorseful for the utterly disgusting act committed by him, he has adopted a campaign of spreading misinformation and falsities with the intent of further harassing the victim,” she had said.

On January 13, Mishra told the court that he is not the accused.

“There must be someone else who peed or it must be her who urinated,” he had said.

He also claimed that the woman was suffering from some prostate-related disease.
