No country other than India has made its G20 presidency an ‘election campaign’: Jairam Ramesh

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Taking a swipe at the Narendra Modi government, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh alleged on Friday that no other country has made its G20 presidency an “election campaign” as has been done by India.

“G20 has 19 countries + European Union as members. Its Annual Summit has been held in 17 countries & India is holding the 18th. No other country has made it an election campaign like India has, proving Mr. Advani’s insight on the man he prevented Mr. (Atal Bihari) Vajpayee from sacking,” he tweeted.

The Congress leader also attached a media report on BJP veteran L K Advani claiming in April 2014 that Narendra Modi was not his protege and was a “brilliant events manager”.

Prime Minister Modi had said earlier that India’s G20 presidency was a unique opportunity to showcase the country’s strengths to the entire world.

The G20 summit is not merely a diplomatic meeting, he had said, adding India takes it as a new responsibility and as the world’s trust in it.

  • Russia vows to build on privileged strategic partnership with India

Russia vows to build on privileged strategic partnership with India

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Russia on Friday described India and China as “friendly sovereign global centres of power” and vowed to give particular importance to comprehensive deepening of ties and enhancement of coordination with them.

Unveiling its new concept of foreign policy, approved by President Vladimir Putin, Moscow also asserted that its attitude towards other countries and multilateral bodies is contingent on the constructive, neutral or unfriendly character of their policies with respect to it.

Russia also said it places special emphasis on increasing the volume of bilateral trade with India, strengthening investment and technological ties, and ensuring resistance to destructive actions of “unfriendly states and their alliances”.

In the document, Russia underlined that it will build on a privileged strategic partnership with India with a view to enhance and expand cooperation in all areas on a mutually beneficial basis.

“A comprehensive deepening of ties and enhancement of coordination with friendly sovereign global centres of power and development, which are located on the Eurasian continent and committed to approaches which coincide in principle with the Russian approaches to a future world order and solutions for key problems of the world politics, is particularly important for achieving strategic goals and major objectives of the foreign policy of the Russian Federation,” the policy statement said in its sub-section on China and India.

Russia aims at further strengthening the comprehensive partnership and the strategic cooperation with China and focuses on the development of a mutually beneficial cooperation in all areas as well as enhancement of coordination in the international arena to ensure security, stability and sustainable development at the global and regional levels, both in Eurasia and in other parts of the world, said the policy document titled ‘The Concept of the Foreign Policy of the Russian Federation’.

It said it seeks to transform Eurasia into a continental common space of peace, stability, mutual trust, development and prosperity.

Achieving this goal implies comprehensive strengthening of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization’s (SCO) potential and role in ensuring security in Eurasia and promoting its sustainable development by enhancing the organisation’s activities in the light of current geopolitical realities, the document said.

The goal also implies establishment of the broad Greater Eurasian Partnership integration contour by combining the potential of all the states, regional organisations and Eurasian associations, based on the EAEU, the SCO and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), as well as the conjunction of the Eurasian Economic Union development plans and the Chinese initiative “One Belt One Road”.

Russia also called for strengthening the economic and transport inter-connectivity in Eurasia, including through modernisation.

It also sought a comprehensive settlement in Afghanistan, assistance in building it as a sovereign, peaceful and neutral state with stable economy and political system which meets the interests of all the ethnic groups living there and opens up prospects for integrating Afghanistan into the Eurasian space for cooperation.

In the document, Moscow also sought enhancing the capacity and international role of the interstate association of BRICS, the SCO, the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), the RIC (Russia, India, China) and other interstate associations and international organisations.

  • Limit to even transparency in ‘New India’: Cong on PM’s degree case

Limit to even transparency in ‘New India’: Cong on PM’s degree case

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Congress on Friday took a swipe at the government, saying there is a limit to even transparency in ‘New India’, after the Gujarat High Court set aside an order of the Central Information Commission asking the Gujarat University to provide information on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s degree.

The high court set aside the seven-year-old order of the commission, asking the varsity to provide information on prime minister’s degree to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

Allowing the Gujarat University’s appeal against the Central Information Commission (CIC) order, Justice Biren Vaishnav also imposed a cost of Rs 25,000 on Kejriwal and asked him to deposit the amount within four weeks to the Gujarat State Legal Services Authority (GSLSA).

Reacting to the verdict, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh in a tweet in Hindi said, “There is a limit to even transparency in New India. This is what the ‘Entire Political Science’ teaches.”

Asked about the issue at a press conference, Congress’ media and publicity department head Pawan Khera said, “See, why this matter went to the court. Courts have lot of pressure… PM’s educational qualification, whether his degree is genuine or not, this matter going to a court is astonishing.”

“It’s a matter of paradox in India, in a country where four crore cases are pending in courts, a hearing is happening on the prime minister’s degree. So, why this situation came up, we need to understand. ‘Entire Political Science’, I haven’t heard of it, if you have heard about it, please tell me,” Khera told reporters in response to a query.

“Even if today such a degree is offered then, I would like to take it,” he said.

  • Pakistan May Not Play Its 2023 ODI World Cup Games In India: Report. This Is The Likely Venue

Pakistan May Not Play Its 2023 ODI World Cup Games In India: Report. This Is The Likely Venue

    [ad_1]

New Delhi, Mar, 29: With the confusion over where Indian cricket team and Pakistan cricket team over where the two sides might play in the Asia Cup, ESPN Cricinfo has reported a fresh development on the World Cup front. The ODI ICC World Cup is being held in India in October-November. According to the report, Pakistan could play its matches in Bangladesh. “The idea has been discussed at the ICC level,” the report claimed. This reported development comes as a hybrid model is coming up as an option for host venue of the Asia Cup.

Also, Wasim Khan, former CEO of the Pakistan Cricket Board and the current General Manager of Cricket for the International Cricket Council (ICC) in an interview with ARY News claimed that Pakistan might also play their World Cup matches at a neutral venue.

“I don’t know if it would take place in a different country but a neutral venue is highly likely,” said Wasim on a question regarding the likely neutral venue for India’s Asia Cup fixtures.

“I don’t think that Pakistan will play their matches in India. I think their matches will also be held at a neutral venue just like India’s Asia Cup matches,” Wasim added.

Pakistan were initially announced as the Asia Cup hosts. However, in October, 2022, the Pakistan Cricket Board was caught off guard by BCCI secretary Jay Shah, who stated that India would not travel to Pakistan for the 2023 Asia Cup and that it would be held in a “neutral” venue. The PCB, under the then chairman Ramiz Raja, promptly responded and said that any such development might impact their plans to travelling to India for the World Cup.

Since then a stalemate has been there regarding the Asia Cup. According to report by news agency ANI, the Asia Cup 2023 is likely to be held in Pakistan, but India will play their games at a neutral venue. After a brief stalemate, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) are working quickly to broker a compromise that could result in both teams playing their tournament matches against one another outside of Pakistan. India are likely to play their Asia Cup 2023 matches in either England, Oman, Sri Lanka or UAE.

“A meeting between the boards had been done a few days back and the tournament will be allowed to be held in Pakistan. India will play their matches at a neutral venue and will not travel to Pakistan, the venues where India could play their matches are likely to be Oman, UAE, England, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Though the decision will be decided later,” a source told ANI.

The foreign location is still to be determined, although the UAE, Oman, Sri Lanka, and possibly England are viable candidates to host India’s matches, including at least two matches between India and Pakistan. The neutral venue is not confirmed but the UAE, Oman, Sri Lanka and even England are potential contenders. If India book their place in the Asia Cup final, the summit clash will take place at a neutral venue.
