Dubai mother sentenced to life for torturing, drowning 10-yr-old daughter

    [ad_1]

Abu Dhabi: A Dubai Criminal Court has sentenced a Russian mother to life in jail for torturing her 10-year-old daughter to death, local media reported.

The incident occurred on June 22, 2023, in The Villa area in Dubai, where the mother called an ambulance, claiming that her daughter had drowned in the bathtub.

However, after investigation, the police discovered that the child had bruises and burns on her body.

The police investigated and questioned the mother who lived with the victim, a two-year-old son, and a domestic worker, who left the country on the same day of the crime.

As per a report by Gulf News, during questioning, the mother denied her involvement in the crime and blamed the domestic worker for her daughter’s death.

After an arrest warrant was issued against the worker, the authorities arrested the servant at his country’s airport with the help of Interpol. However, he denied any involvement in the crime when questioned.

He pins the crime on the mother, indicating that he noticed that the mother deliberately abused her daughter and tortured her continuously.

A day before the crime, the servant saw the mother locking her daughter in her room.

As per media reports, the next morning, when he went to wake her up for school, he found her missing from the bedroom.

When he heard the sound of water coming from the bathroom, he found the girl lying in the tub. He immediately informed the mother of the girl’s condition but was shocked by her calm reaction. Fearing that he would be accused of the crime, he left for his home country.

After the servant testified, the mother admitted to physically harming her daughter and drowning her in the bathtub.

The criminal court sentenced her to life imprisonment.

It is reported that the servant was referred to the Criminal Court, which sentenced him to one month in prison for not reporting a crime.

SL envoy gifts to India 2 paintings depicting arrival of Ashoka’s son, daughter

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Sri Lankan envoy Milinda Moragoda gifted to India two paintings depicting the arrival of Emperor Ashoka’s son and daughter in the country, officials here said on Saturday.

The paintings, replicas of the original paintings at a temple located close to the Sri Lankan capital Colombo, will be housed at the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA), they said.

Union Minister of State for Culture and External Affairs Meenakshi Lekhi received the paintings at the NGMA, a senior official said.

Sri Lankan High Commissioner Milinda Moragoda accompanied a group of senior monks from the country, led by Most Venerable Waskaduwe Mahindawansa Mahanayake Thero, to hand over the two paintings depicting the arrival of Ashoka’s son Mahendra and his daughter Sangamitra in Sri Lanka, she said.

The NGMA, located in Jaipur House near India Gate, comes under the purview of the Union Ministry of Culture.

The handover ceremony took place on the sidelines of the two-day Global Buddhist Summit that ended on Friday.

The Sri Lankan delegation to the Global Buddhist Summit was present, along with Mahabodhi Society representatives.

The minister later hosted them over lunch and ‘Theravada meal’ was served to the delegates at her office, the officials said.

Lekhi mentioned the close historical, cultural and traditional relationship between Sri Lanka and India, especially in the context of Buddhism.

While highlighting the ancient linkage between the two countries, Lekhi emphasised that this relationship should be “further strengthened by future generations over centuries”.

She described the pictures in detail, explaining how the king in Sri Lanka received Ashoka’s son and daughter. Lekhi thanked the Sri Lankan delegation and the high commissioner for their contribution to the NGMA. Some of the monks gifted books on Buddhism to Lekhi, said the officials.

The delegation was “elated” over the minister’s decision to do “something more concrete” on the Buddhist network between Sri Lanka and India in the coming months and years, the official said.

Lekhi also tweeted about the paintings being gifted and also shared some pictures.

“Happy to unveil the beautiful murals painted by Solias Mendis and presented by @SLinIndia on the sidelines of the Global Buddhist Summit,” she tweeted.

“The murals showcase historical events marking the advent of Buddhism in Sri Lanka and reflects the strong civilisational bonds between our two countries,” she added.

“The paintings as part of the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Sri Lanka depicts the arrival of King Ashoka’s son, Mahendra, and his daughter, Sangamitra, to Sri Lanka,” she added in her tweet.

Ashoka, also referred to as Ashoka the Great, was an emperor of the Mauryan Empire whose capital was located in ancient Pataliputra (current day Patna). He had sent his son Mahendra and daughter Sangamitra to Sri Lanka to spread Buddhism.

  • Mehbooba’s daughter Iltija gets ‘UAE specific’ passport with 2-year validity

Mehbooba’s daughter Iltija gets ‘UAE specific’ passport with 2-year validity

    [ad_1]

Srinagar: PDP president Mehbooba Mufti’s daughter Iltija has been issued a “country specific passport” for two years to allow her to study in the United Arab Emirates, brushing aside an adverse report by Jammu and Kashmir Police’s Criminal Investigation Department, officials said on Thursday.

Iltija, 35, moved the Jammu and Kashmir High Court in February after her application for a passport was not cleared. Her passport expired on January 2 this year and she had applied for a fresh one on June 8 last year.

The court directed the Regional Passport Office (RPO) to look into the merits of the case. Following this, Iltija, who wants to go for higher studies, has been issued a passport that is valid from April 5, 2023 to April 4, 2025, according to a letter by the RPO to the additional solicitor general.

    MS Education Academy

“This passport will be valid only for UAE,” an official said. The passport has a stamp stating this.

Quoting the RPO’s letter, officials said the CID/police verification report received from the special director general of police (CID), Jammu and Kashmir, in February does not favour issuing her a passport.

The officials said Passport Officer (Srinagar) Davinder Kumar sought a detailed report from the CID on whether there was any charge sheet or FIR against Iltija. However, the department refused to share its report and reiterated its stance taken in February.

“Why is the validity of this passport only for two years and that too country specific?” Iltija asked.

“They have not done me any favour. I am thankful to the honourable court but the larger question remains about CID’s gross misconduct and abuse of power by weaponising passports,” she told PTI.

She said the CID’s adverse report is full of “bald-faced lies”.

“They are infringing on my rights by filing adverse reports to ensure my passport is not issued,” Iltija alleged.

“To add to that, the adverse report has been classified as top secret. The only reason it is top secret is because the CID has nothing substantial against me,” Iltija said.

On March 29, the CID sought dismissal of Iltija’s writ petition. It informed the high court that her final verification report was forwarded to the department concerned in February.

“The petitioner has no ground to approach the court against the answering respondent because none of the rights, whether fundamental or legal, have been infringed by the answering respondent,” Senior Superintendent of Police, headquarters, CID, Jammu and Kashmir, had said.

In March 2021, Mehbooba and her 80-year-old mother Gulshan Nazir were refused passports, citing an “adverse report” against them.

Mehbooba’s passport expired on May 31, 2019 and she had applied for a fresh one on December 11, 2020. Her mother, wife of former chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, also applied for a passport in 2020 to undertake a religious pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia.

Mehbooba’s passport application is still pending. However, authorities issued the travel document to her mother in February on the directions of the high court.
