Attack on Christians in India and Pakistan

A hallmark of a civilised society is that minorities therein can live with dignity and honour. The recent attacks on Christians (and other minorities ) in India and Pakistan show that neither country is really civilised.

Christians in India and Pakistan are tiny minorities in both countries, about 28 million or 2.3% of the total population of about 1400 million in India, and about 1.27 million or 1.65% of the total population of about 230 million in Pakistan. They are peace loving people who have never done any harm to other communities. Rather, they have made a great contribution, particularly in the field of education, where many non Chistians prefer to send their children to Christian schools ( myself being a product of one of them, the Boys High School, Allahabad ).

Yet savage attacks have been made on them in both countries, many of whom were killed, their women raped ( two of them paraded naked and beaten in Manipur ), and their churches and homes often torched and vandalised.

For instance, recently in the state of Manipur the minority Christian Kuki community were barbarically attacked by the majority Meitei community ( most of whom are Hindus ), supported by the state government which is ruled by the pro-Hindu BJP party, which also rules the Central Govt.

Elsewhere too in India Christians have been attacked, and atrocities committed on them.

Similar atrocities have been committed recently on Christians in Pakistan

What drives these attacks on minorities ?

It is the majoritarian policy of the ruling party in India, which thrives on religious hatred, as it gets them votes.

And in Pakistan it is the free hand given to the mullahs and religious extremists given by the Establishment.

It is sad to say, but this situation will continue until there is a radical change in the political and social system in both countries, but that is still a far way off.

TN: Stalin moves resolution to bring Dalit Christians under Scheduled Castes

    [ad_1]

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin introduced a motion in the Assembly on Wednesday seeking to include Dalit Christians into the purview of the Scheduled Castes (SC) quota, stating that doing so will allow them to benefit from social justice in all aspects.

“This august House urges the Government of India to make necessary amendments to the Constitution to extend statutory protection, rights and concessions including reservation as provided to the people belonging to Scheduled Castes under the Indian Constitution, also to the Scheduled Castes who have converted to Christianity, so as to enable them to avail the benefits of social justice in all aspects,” the resolution moved by Stalin read, reported Deccan Herald.

The resolution comes at a time when the Union Government is opposed to granting quota privileges to Dalits who have converted to Christianity or Islam.

In December 2022, the Centre informed the Supreme Court that it was unwilling to execute the recommendations of the Justice Ranganath Misra Commission for Religious and Linguistic Minorities that Dalits who converted to Christianity and Islam be granted quota.

The Centre has also formed a commission to investigate the subject, led by former Chief Justice of India Justice K G Balakrishnan. While Dalits who are Buddhists or Sikhs are eligible for SC reservation advantages, those who converted to Christianity or Islam are not.

  • ‘Christians are in danger..false’, Centre to SC on plea over attacks

‘Christians are in danger..false’, Centre to SC on plea over attacks

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Centre has brought on record data from eight states before the Supreme Court to claim that plea alleging increasing attacks on Christians across the country is an “attempt by the petitioners to paint a false picture”, and petitions like these are “projected outside the country to say “look Christians are in danger”, which is a concern for the government.

In a compliance affidavit, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said: “It is submitted that perusal of the verification reports furnished reveals that state governments have stated that majority of the incidents (263 out of 495) from the list furnished by the counsel for the petitioner(s) have not been reported to them”.

The affidavit said out of 232 incidents, which have been reported to the concerned state Governments, the matter(s) were resolved in 73 incidents amicably with mutual agreement between both the parties. “These 73 incidents were related to land disputes, family disputes, superstitious practices, violation of Covid-19 guidelines and other trivial issues. FIR/non-FIR complaints were registered in the remaining 155 cases,” it added.

    MS Education Academy

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Centre, and advocate Sumeer Sodhi, representing the Chhattisgarh government, opposed arguments made by senior advocate Colin Gonsalves, representing the petitioners, before a bench headed by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud.

Mehta said, “They want to keep the pot boiling that is very apparent…in fact there are 64 arrests in Chhattisgarh…state governments are saying that most of the incidents never happened…and this would be projected outside the country…look Christians are in danger…that is our concern.” Gonsalves said it is not a question of arrests, “you attack and then you put us behind…once see the data lordships”.

According to the Centre, in Bihar the petitioners claimed 38 incidents (attack on Christians), however state government reported 15 incidents, out of which five matters were resolved amicably between both the parties, 12 accused were arrested and charge sheets have been filed in two cases.

In Chhattisgarh, 119 incidents were claimed by the petitioners, however the state government reported 36 incidents and in 12 incidents matters were related to family disputes, which was resolved amicably, and 64 accused were arrested and charge sheets have been filed in 13 cases.

In Uttar Pradesh, 150 incidents were claimed by the petitioners, but 70 incidents were reported by the state government. It further added that 44 FIRs were registered and 72 accused were arrested and 33 were served notice under section 41-A of CrPC, and charge sheets have been filed in 30 cases.

During the hearing, Mehta, stressing petitioners’ data on number of attacks on Christians is incorrect, submitted that in Bihar, petitioners claimed 38 incidents, but these were fights between neighbours where one happens to be a Christian, and fights were resolved and whenever there is a grave offence, arrests have happened.

Mehta also questioned the data from the helpline referred by the petitioners, on which whoever reported an incident was counted.

After hearing submissions, the bench also comprising Justices P.S. Narasimha and J.B. Pardiwala, noted that the counsel for petitioners says MHA’s affidavit was received last night and time should be granted to the petitioners to file a response if needed, and listed the matter for further hearing after three weeks. The petition has been filed by Most Rev. Dr. Peter Machado and others.

The MHA’s affidavit said that it is evident from the information furnished by the concerned state governments that the counsel for the petitioners has exaggerated the number of incidents and many incidents alleged as Christian persecution in the report of the counsel for the petitioners may have been either false or wrongly projected.

“It is submitted that many trivial disputes between two parties are likely to have been given religious colour. For example – in relation to an incident in the district Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh, the Counsel for the petitioner(s) in their report, has claimed that the police barged in and disrupted the prayer of pastor Prem Singh and warned the pastor to discontinue with their services as well as detained the pastor. However, the verification report of the government of Uttar Pradesh reveals that there is a land dispute between pastor Prem Singh and a local resident, named Vijay Kumar. Police action in the matter was projected as persecution of Christians. The matter was deliberately given religious colour,” said the affidavit.

The affidavit further added that in reference to ‘Christians Under Attack in India’ — a fact finding report prepared by the Association for Protection of Civil Right (APCR), the UCF, and United Against Hate (UAH), the verification reports received from concerned state governments thereof reveals that many allegations and observations made in the report were found to be unfounded and the majority of the incidents quoted either were false or deliberately exaggerated, and uncorroborated.

“The incidents, quoted here, from the UCF, PR (Persecution Relief) and EFI/ RLC’s (Evangelical Fellowship of India- Religious Liberty Commissions) reports were based on the alleged calls on their helpline and social media sites and the said organisation have no mechanism to corroborate the incidents reported to them over the helpline or their websites,” it added.

The MHA said India is a vibrant pluralistic society founded on strong democratic principles and practices and the Indian Constitution guarantees fundamental rights to all citizens, including the Right to Freedom of Religion under Article 25 to 28 of the Constitution, and all persons have equal right to practice, profess and propagate their religion peacefully.

The affidavit said the attempt of the petitioners is to paint a particularly false picture for aims unknown and it is submitted that the country is governed by the rule of law and the attempt of the petitioners is to create a false narrative through the present Article 32 petition must be deprecated.

“It is submitted that the present petition is an attempt to short-circuit the process of law followed by the entire country that ought to be stalled. Therefore, in view of the aforementioned, it is denied that there is any violation of fundamental rights as enshrined under the Constitution of India, as alleged. It is, therefore, humbly prayed that the petition may be dismissed,” said the affidavit.

  • SC directs Centre to file report on cases of alleged attacks on Christians

SC directs Centre to file report on cases of alleged attacks on Christians

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Supreme Court directed the Centre on Wednesday to file a report on alleged attacks on Christian institutions and priests across the country as well as on the implementation of its earlier guidelines to curb hate crimes.

A bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices PS Narasimha and JB Pardiwala directed the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to collate a report on the state’s compliance with the court’s guidelines and file the same before it.

The court passed the directions after the petitioner’s counsel, senior advocate Colin Gonsalves, said nodal officers have been notified in every district but they are not registering cases, even though hate speeches have been delivered during rallies in Uttar Pradesh and Chhattisgarh and such news appear regularly on television and in newspapers.

Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati opposed the submission made by Gonsalves, saying it is “easy to make sweeping statements”.

The CJI then said, “Let the MHA file a reply…. We can keep this after two weeks.”

In 2018, the apex court issued a slew of guidelines for the Centre and states for dealing with hate crimes. These included fast-track trials, compensation to the victims, deterrent punishment and disciplinary action against lax law-enforcing officials. The court said offences such as hate crimes, cow vigilantism and lynching should be nipped in the bud.

The states shall designate a senior police officer not below the rank of superintendent of police as the nodal officer for the implementation of the guidelines in each district, the court had said, adding that these officers will set up a task force, to be assisted by a DSP-rank officer, for taking measures to prevent incidents of mob violence and lynching.

The state governments shall immediately identify the districts, sub-divisions and villages where instances of lynching and mob violence have been reported in the recent past, the court had said.

BJP opposes SC status for Dalit Christians, says ‘real’ Dalits will lose out

    [ad_1]

Andhra Pradesh BJP president Somu Veerraju chastised the YSRCP-led state administration for passing a motion in the state Legislature requesting the Centre to modify the Constitution to grant Schedule Caste status to SCs who converted to Christianity.

Veerraju urged that the YSRC administration rescind the resolution, claiming that it was nothing more than ‘encouraging religious conversions’ in a secular society. The State BJP chairman stated that he will send a memorandum to the Governor in this respect on March 27.

Addressing reporters in Visakhapatnam, BJP MP GVL Narasimha Rao said the party will reject the YSRC government’s plan to include Dalit Christians on the SC list.

He recalled how they objected to such a step during the TDP’s reign. “We will develop an action plan in response to the ruling soon,” he added.

GVL said that such inclusion would jeopardise the interests of ‘real’ Dalits, who would lose a portion of their reservation. “That would be a huge disservice to Dalits. As a result, the YSRC government should rescind the resolution. It’s all part of the ruling YSRC’s vote bank tactics,” he explained.

The MP further said that the court decision in the Rahul Gandhi issue was being misconstrued. He said that the Congress, which had stifled democracy during the Emergency, was now talking about democracy.

  • Kerala’s apex church body seeks ban on play for showing Christians in poor light

Kerala’s apex church body seeks ban on play for showing Christians in poor light

    [ad_1]

Kochi: Kerala Catholic Bishops’ Council (KCBC), the apex body of the Catholic Church in the state, has urged the state government to ban the staging of a Malayalam drama alleging that it portrayed Christianity along with its congregations and convents in a bad light.

A recent meeting of bishops and heads of various congregations, chaired by KCBC president Cardinal Baselios Cleemis here, condemned the play ‘Kakkukali’ and opined that its staging was a blot on the culture of Kerala.

A play based on the story of Malayalam writer Francis Noronha, ‘Kakkukali’ revolves around a young nun and her struggles and challenges which she comes across in a convent.

Alappuzha-based Neythal Nataka Sangham gave the story a stage adaptation under the direction of Job Madathil.

In the meeting, the KCBC representatives said drama and literary works have the history of paving the way for reforms, transformations and social upliftment.

But glorifying works with highly derogatory content and distortion of history is unacceptable, the apex body said in a statement.

It was “highly condemnable” that ‘Kakkukali’, which hurt the self-confidence and self-esteem of thousands of nuns and congregations who offer unique services to the society, has been included in the international drama festival of the state government and given huge publicity by the Left outfits, the statement further said.

The Catholic body also urged the cultural society to denounce the play and demanded the government to take immediate steps to ban its staging.

However, Job Madathil, the play’s director, has rejected the criticisms and said the troupe would go ahead with its staging. “The drama was already staged in 15 venues and I did not understand why a protest suddenly broke out now,” he said.

Christians protest against ‘attacks on churches’ in Delhi

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Members of the Christian community staged a protest at Jantar Mantar here on Sunday against alleged “attacks on churches, violence and arrests” in different parts of the country.

“We are being accused of forcibly converting people to Christianity. Churches are being attacked, our people are being beaten up and arrested. The community members are living in a constant state of panic,” Steven from Uttar Pradesh said.

He claimed that the country saw “525 cases of atrocities against the members of the community in 2021 and 600 cases in 2022”.

“In Uttar Pradesh, the number of such cases increased from 70 in 2020 to 183 in 2022,” he claimed.

Shivpal from Fatehpur in Uttar Pradesh alleged that the state police has been arresting people over allegations of forced conversions.

“We are not even allowed to pray in our houses. A few women were arrested for offering prayers during a birthday celebration,” he said.

One of the FIRs filed against the members of the community names an 11-year-old and a person who died in 2010, Steven alleged.

“Churches are being attacked and our community members harassed in Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and many other states. Cases are being filed against them on the basis of false charges.

We have come here to express solidarity with our brothers and sisters,” Poonam, who came from Delhi’s Punjabi Bagh, said.

Rajasthan police launch enquiry into Ramdev’s remarks on Muslims, Christians

    [ad_1]

Rajasthan police on Saturday launched a suo moto enquiry into the controversial remarks made by Yoga guru Baba Ramdev about Muslims and Christians at an event in Rajasthan’s Barmer, according to reports.

The renowned yoga guru Ramdev Baba made a bigoted speech against Muslims and Christians and claimed that while Muslims are busy ‘making terrorists in the name of namaz’, Christians are performing religious conversions.

He was addressing a crowd in the Barmer district. “Ask any Muslim what your religion teaches, and they say, ‘keep reading namaz every day and do whatever you want’ even if that means kidnapping Hindu women. This is their definition of Islam. They are sinners, our Muslim brothers,” Ramdev said.

“Read the namaz daily and then do whatever you want, even if that means becoming a terrorist,” he added.

He said that the idea of Islamic heaven is beautiful angels and alcohol. “All these people have to do is shave their moustache, wear a white kurta-pyjama and a topi,” he said, further clarifying that though Islam or the Quran does not say such things, this is what is being spread. “I am not saying that Islam or the Quran ask them to do it but they are doing it anyhow,” he said.

He said that such a concept of heaven is worse than hell.

Coming to Christians he says, “What does Christianity say? Go to church, light a candle, and then stand in front of the Lord Jesus, all your sins are washed away.” He talks about the cross. a holy sign in Christians as well as the Rosary necklace (Rosary means a chain of roses and each rose is a prayer).

“They have some cross-like sign on their neck and then other chains that looks alike like ours,” he said.

He again clarifies that he is not against any religion in particular and then goes on to mention religious conversions. “Muslims want the whole world to convert to Islam and Christians want the whole world to accept Christianity as their major religion,” he said.
