We did not attack Putin, says Zelensky

Kiev: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has denied that his country carried out an alleged drone attack on the Kremlin, which Russia says was an attempt on President Vladimir Putin’s life.

Zelensky, who is currently on a trip to Finland, told reporters in Helsinki late Wednesday night: “We are not attacking either Putin or Moscow; we are fighting on our own territory, defending our villages and towns. We don’t even have enough weapons to do that… That’s why we didn’t attack Putin; we’ll leave that to the (international) tribunal.”

The President further stressed that Russia has had no victories at the front and that Putin can no longer motivate Russian society and send soldiers to war for no reason, reports Ukrayinska Pravda.

“So it is in his (Putin) interest to accuse Ukraine of committing some crimes. He needs to do something drastic: either ‘assassination attempts’, drones, or some ‘geese that bombed them’. They will come up with something or other every day.

“But the solution is simple: no need to intimidate anyone, no need to use weapons; you need to leave our territory,” he added.

On Wednesday evening, the Kremlin press service said that Ukrainian drones had “attempted to strike” at the residence of Putin.

The Kremlin called the so-called attack a “planned terrorist action” and an “assassination attempt on the Russian President”.

In response, Serhii Nykyforov, spokesman for President Zelensky, said that Ukraine had no information about the attack on the Kremlin.

“What happened in Moscow was clearly a Russian escalation of the situation,” he added.

Unverified footage circulating online showed smoke rising over the Kremlin, reports the BBC.

A second video shows a small explosion above the site’s Senate building, while two men appear to clamber up the dome.

Earlier on Wednesday, Russian strikes on Ukraine’s southern Kherson region killed 21 people.

According to Zelensky, the shelling had hit “a railway station and a crossing, a house, a hardware store, a grocery supermarket and a gas station”.

The victims included supermarket customers and employees of an energy company who were performing repairs, officials said.

Kiev: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and visiting Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte discussed defense aid for Kyiv and new sanctions on Russia.

At the talks, Zelensky thanked the Netherlands for the decision to transfer Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine and the participation in the “tank coalition”, Xinhua news agency reported, citing the presidential press service.

The Netherlands together with Germany and Denmark are preparing to hand over about 100 Leopard tanks to Ukraine, Zelensky said.

This year, the Netherlands allocated 2.5 billion euros (about $2.67 billion) for helping Ukraine in the military, financial, humanitarian, and legal spheres, he added.

Zelensky has called for imposing new sanctions on Moscow over the Russia-Ukraine conflict, including restrictive measures against the nuclear sphere, the missile industry, the IT sector, and all industries and enterprises that contribute to the implementation of the Russian missile program or the production of drones.

For his part, Rutte said that his country stands ready not only to supply tanks and air defense systems to Ukraine, but also to provide training and exercises for the Ukrainian military.

Rutte also announced that the International Center for the Investigation of the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine will be established in the Netherlands to collect evidence of crimes.

Rutte arrived in Kiev earlier in the day for his second visit since the start of the Russia-Ukraine conflict nearly one year ago.

Kyiv: Former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Sunday reached the Ukrainian capital and visited its outskirts before meeting President Volodymyr Zelensky, reports said.

The Conservative MP said it was a “privilege” to visit the country at the invitation of Zelensky, the BBC reported.

The unannounced visit came as fresh questions over Johnson’s personal finances emerged in the UK, including claims that BBC Chairman Richard Sharp helped Mr Johnson secure a loan while he was Prime Minister.

Johnson, who made no mention of the allegations, he was received by the President and other Ukrainian ministers.

“I welcome Boris Johnson, a true friend of Ukraine, to Kyiv. Boris thanks for your support!” Zelensky wrote on Telegram.

Johnson also visited the towns of Bucha and Borodyanka, which were occupied by Russian forces in March last year, and allegedly saw a massacre.
