YouTube Music now let users create customise radio stations

San Francisco: Google is rolling out a new feature to music streaming service ‘YouTube Music’, which will allow users to create their own custom stations based on specific artists.

Users can access the new “Radio Builder” feature by navigating to the “Your music tuner” section of the YouTube Music homepage in the iOS or Android application, reports The Verge.

Users can choose up to 30 artists when creating a custom station, and can also specify whether they want to hear music just from those artists or from artists that are similar to those they have chosen.

Also, users can instruct it to play songs they know, songs they haven’t heard before, or a combination of the two while adding filters to allow users to tune the mix.

According to Google spokesperson Paul Pennington, all users can access the feature, whether they are a paying subscriber or a free user, the report said.

Last December, it was reported that the company was testing this feature.

Meanwhile, earlier this month, the music streaming platform had reportedly rolled out the redesign of the “album view” for Android and iOS.

  • YouTube Music contract employees on strike over unfair labour practices

YouTube Music contract employees on strike over unfair labour practices

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: Dozens of third-party employees at YouTube Music, hired by Alphabet sub-contractor tech company Cognizant, have gone on strike over alleged unfair labour practices.

According to a report in The Verge, 40 striking workers alleged that both companies’ management have “leveraged unfair labour practices to get in the way of their union drive”.

They alleged that the vast majority of them are ready to vote yes in a National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) election.

“In an act of retaliation, our employer is forcing an end to remote work before the vote, which would dramatically interfere with the fair voting conditions mandated by federal law,” said YouTube Music generalist Sam Regan at a strike in Austin, Texas.

YouTube Music’s content operations team is expected to return to the Austin office early next week.

However, Alphabet Workers Union (AWU) said the majority of workers were hired remotely.

“Workers are paid as little as $19 dollars an hour and thus, cannot afford the relocation, travel or childcare costs associated with in person work,” the AWU said in a statement.

The AWU had filed an unfair labour practice charge with the NLRB.

Alphabet recently laid off 12,000 employees, or 6 per cent of its global workforce.

Google employees also staged protests in the US this week to call attention to labour conditions for sub-contracted workers and to support thousands of their recently laid-off co-workers.

Nearly 50 Google employees also protested outside a Ninth Avenue store in New York shortly after parent company Alphabet announced fourth-quarter profits of $13.6 billion.

YouTube Shorts now averaging over 50 bn daily views: Sundar Pichai

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: YouTube Shorts, Google’s answer to TikTok, is now averaging over 50 billion daily views, up from 30 billion that was last reported, Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai has announced.

Pichai said that this performance will reward creators and help improve the Shorts experience for everyone.

“Our subscription business continues to grow, with YouTube Music and Premium surpassing 80 million subscribers, including trials. Together with our YouTube Primetime channel subscriptions and YouTube TV, we have good momentum here,” Pichai said during the analysts’ call late on Thursday.

In December, the National Football League announced YouTube will pay around $2 billion a year for rights to the “Sunday Ticket”.

According to Pichai, YouTube’s NFL Sunday Ticket will help acedrive subscriptions, bring new viewers to YouTube’s paid and ad-supported experiences, and create new opportunities for creators”.

YouTube advertising revenue was $7.96 billion — down 8 per cent from $8.63 billion the year prior — in the December quarter.

“Beyond our advertising business, we have strong momentum in Cloud, YouTube subscriptions, and hardware. However, our revenues this quarter were impacted by pullbacks in advertiser spend and the impact of foreign exchange,” said Pichai.

He said there are many opportunities to build on the progress at YouTube over the years, starting with Shorts monetisation.

“Overall, I see this as an important journey to re-engineer the company’s cost base in a durable way,” said Pichai.

YouTube Music on the web gets mood filters

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: Google-owned music streaming platform YouTube Music gets mood filters, i.e. “activity bar” with various moods to tune what appears in the Home feed on the web.

In the web version, it is left-aligned (as on tablets) and appears beneath the app bar, which can be used to switch between Home, Explore, Library, and Search reports 9to5Google.

For a less Material look, pill-shaped buttons are used instead of rectangles with rounded corners.

By selecting one of the options — Energise, Workout, Relax, Commute, and Focus — YouTube Music gets updated with a feed of songs, albums, and playlists that match the mood.

Moreover, the music streaming platform also updates the background image at the top.

To go back to the main feed, users will need to click the mood they selected again, said the report.

Meanwhile, YouTube Music is reportedly testing a feature called — “live lyrics” with a tweaked Casting user interface (UI).

Some users have already received the new feature.

A Reddit user noticed a new UI while casting YouTube Music from an Android phone to a Chromecast Ultra.

Instead of album artwork, song name, and artist being centered on the screen, they were on the right with left-aligned text.
