Cairo: Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry held talks with his Yemeni counterpart Ahmed Awad Bin Mubarak in Cairo, calling for a comprehensive political solution in war-torn Yemen.

Shoukry said that Egypt encourages all efforts “aimed at finding a comprehensive and sustainable political solution in Yemen, to be agreed upon by the various Yemeni sects, in order to preserve the country’s unity,” said the Egyptian Foreign Ministry in a statement on Thursday.

The Egyptian Minister reiterated Egypt’s support for the legitimate government led by the Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council, and for the UN-sponsored truce between warring forces in Yemen, particularly those between the internationally recognised government and the Iran-backed Houthi militia.

For his part, Bin Mubarak affirmed Yemen’s appreciation for Egypt’s constant support of the Yemeni government and Cairo’s “efforts to reach a political settlement that would restore security and stability to the country”.

The Yemeni top diplomat briefed his Egyptian counterpart on the latest developments in Yemen and the ongoing efforts to reach a political solution in the country, Xinhua news agency reported.

Bin Mubarak handed Shoukry a letter from Chairman of the Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council Rashad Al-Alimi, addressed to Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi.

Since a truce came into effect in early April last year, Yemenis have witnessed nearly a year of reduced violence and the overall situation in Yemen has been relatively stable in the past months.

Yemen has been mired in a civil war since late 2014 when the Iran-backed Houthi militia stormed several northern cities and forced the Saudi-backed Yemeni government out of the capital of Sanaa. A Saudi-led military coalition intervened in the Yemeni conflict in 2015 to support the Yemeni government.

Sanaa: Overnight flash foods set off by heavy rain here in the Yemeni capital left traffic paralyzed.

The floodwaters, which started late Friday, once reached knee height in large parts of downtown Sanaa, inundating markets, lowrise homes, and shops through Saturday.

Some flooded main streets and tunnel entrances have been closed, Xinhua news agency reported.

On late Saturday, the water level has yet to recede in downtown’s Al-Tahrir Square, as well as Bab-Al-Yemen and Al-Sayelah in and outside the Old City of Sanaa, a UNESCO heritage site.

Residents were seen struggling to clear up water and sludge from their basements and shops while rescuing their belongings.

Yemen’s national weather service issued flash flood warnings for various provinces as a rise in precipitation is forecasted with the start of the rainy season.

Last rainy season, at least 10 multi-storeyed buildings in Sanaa were collapsed and dozens more in the Old City damaged due to heavy rains.

  • Escalating conflict in Yemen’s Marib forces hundreds to flee

Escalating conflict in Yemen’s Marib forces hundreds to flee

    [ad_1]

Sanaa: Hundreds of people were forced to leave their homes as fighting between the Yemeni government and the Houthi militia has continued to escalate in the war-torn nation’s oil-rich province of Marib, a military official said.

Key areas in Marib have been engulfed in armed confrontations over the past few days, leading to a large number of casualties on both sides, the official told Xinhua news agency late Wednesday.

He said that the situation has become increasingly dire for the civilians caught in the crossfire in Harib district, as many have been forced to leave their homes and belongings behind in search of safer places.

“The ongoing battles prompted a mass exodus of people from several villages in Marib and Shabwa provinces, causing overcrowding in temporary shelters and refugee camps with limited resources,” said the official.

From March 19 to 25, approximately 235 families, comprising 1,410 individuals, were forced to leave their homes in Marib, Hodeidah, and Taiz, according to the International Migration Organization (IOM).

The total number of families that had been transferred to various provinces in Yemen since January was 2,030, consisting of 12,180 individuals, according to the IOM.

The recent Houthi attacks against government troops in Marib and other regions have shattered hopes for a lasting peace pact.

The UN-brokered truce, which lasted from April to October last year, provided a momentary respite in the war-torn country.

Yemen has been embroiled in a devastating civil war since 2014, with the Houthis fighting against the internationally-recognized government and its allies, which include a Saudi Arabia-led coalition.

The years-long war brought the Arab world’s poorest country to the brink of collapse, causing famine and widespread suffering as well as disrupting the country’s food supply chain, leaving millions of people without access to adequate nutrition.

  • Roadside bomb explosion kills 2 govt soldiers in Yemen’s Shabwa

Roadside bomb explosion kills 2 govt soldiers in Yemen’s Shabwa

    [ad_1]

Aden: Two soldiers of Yemen’s government forces were killed and four others injured in an explosion in the country’s southeastern oil-rich province of Shabwa, a military official said.

A local military officer told Xinhua news agency on condition of anonymity on Saturday that an improvised explosive device on the roadside exploded when a motorcade of military vehicles that escorted trucks carrying diesel passed by in the Ar Rawdah district of Shabwa.

The IED, which was planted and remotely detonated by terrorists, also destroyed a military vehicle, the source said.

Security forces and a medical team were sent to the site and carried the wounded soldiers to a nearby hospital for treatment, he noted.

So far, no group has claimed the responsibility for the attack, Xinhua news agency reported.

The Yemen-based al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula network has exploited years of deadly conflict between the Yemeni government and the Houthi militia to expand its presence in the war-ravaged Arab country. It frequently uses hit-and-run tactics against Yemeni government forces while hiding out in rocky terrains and mountainous areas of Abyan and other neighbouring provinces, including Shabwa.
