New Delhi: CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury on Thursday said efforts for opposition unity have picked up the pace ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha polls and seat adjustments will be made at the state level.

Speaking to the media after meeting Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar here, Yechury indicated that a third front was a possibility.

“Efforts for opposition unity have picked up the pace. An opposition coalition will be formed and seat adjustments will be done at the state level,” the CPI(M) general secretary said.

“In Kerala, Congress and our party are arch rivals. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is not in a fight there,” he said.

He further said that the third front that is going to be formed will always be after the elections.

“But in India, fronts are formed post polls such as United Front in 1996, in 1998 NDA was formed after elections, UPA formed post polls in 2004,” Yechury said.

Earlier, Bihar CM Kumar, who on Wednesday met Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi as part of his initiative to forge an alliance of opposition parties, met Yechury here.

Later, Yechury tweeted, “With Bihar CM Shri Nitish Kumar to carry forward the efforts to unite secular democratic parties to safeguard the Indian Republic, Constitution and democracy, severely assaulted by the BJP & Modi govt. Defeat the BJP in order to save India & people’s livelihoods (sic).”

The Bihar CM also met CPI general secretary D Raja on Thursday.

“Had a meeting with JD(U) leader & Bihar CM Shri Nitish Kumar to discuss broad issues of opposition unity against RSS-BJP. The country is in turmoil and all sections of society are vocal against BJP misrule. Unity of secular-democratic forces is must to protect our democracy and people,” said Raja in a tweet after the meeting.

New Delhi: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar met CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury, CPI leader D. Raja and other leaders here on Thursday amid talks of opposition unity.

Nitish Kumar is on a three-day visit to New Delhi to bring the non-BJP parties together to fight against the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Yechury, while speaking to the media, said that his party and the Left have always believed that democratic parties with secular ideology need to unite.

He said: “Today, we have to save our country, our constitution and democracy. For this, there is a need to defeat the BJP and the present government at the Centre. Our basic objective is to stop the division of anti-BJP votes. For this all parties need to come together.”

He stated that a joint meeting of all the parties would be held soon wherein the whole outline would be decided.

Yechury said: “We have to save the Constitution today and for that we have to defeat the BJP in the 2024 elections. Talks are on with other political parties as well… The front that is going to be formed will always be there after the elections.”

Yechury tweeted: “With Bihar CM Shri Nitish Kumar to carry forward the efforts to unite secular democratic parties to safeguard the Indian Republic, Constitution and Democracy, severely assaulted by the BJP & Modi govt. Defeat the BJP in order to save India & people’s livelihoods.”

Commenting on the seat-sharing formula, Yechury said that the political alliance will be decided by the CPI(M) according to the circumstances in the states. He added that seats will be distributed as per the political situation in different states.

Citing the example of Kerala, he said that the BJP has no hold there, so the competition will be between the Congress and the Left parties, but in the states where the BJP has to be fought, the opposition parties will coordinate on the seats.

  • BJP sharpening communal divide as 2024 general elections approach: Yechury

BJP sharpening communal divide as 2024 general elections approach: Yechury

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury on Wednesday alleged that the BJP is sharpening communal polarisation as the 2024 general elections approach.

He said that clashes between groups of people have been witnessed during the Ram Navami celebrations in some parts of the country.

“As 2024 (Lok Sabha elections) approaches, sharpening communal polarisation has become mainstay for the BJP for its electoral and political mobilisation,” Yechury said at a press conference here.

    MS Education Academy

Stating that there is no history of clashes during the Ramnavami celebrations in the past in many of the places where they occurred, the CPI(M) leader claimed that it was engineered.

The CPI(M) leader said that the anti-BJP forces in the country have to unite to make sure that the saffron party does not continue to control the reins of the government and state power.

Yechury said that post the general elections next year, the actual formation of an anti-BJP alliance will take shape.

He claimed that this combine will form the next government, replacing the BJP-led NDA.

The CPI(M) leader said each state has its specific political alignments, but the idea is to maximise pooling of the anti-BJP forces.

“Both in 1996 and 2004, alliances were formed after the elections,” he said.

He pointed out that the CPI(M) supported the Manmohan Singh government in 2004 despite having fought the Congress in three states West Bengal, Kerala and Tripura.

He said that the CPI(M) has decided to continue to talk with all the secular, democratic opposition parties.

“The effort would be, in the coming 2024 elections, in every state to maximise the pooling of patriotic and secular opposition forces so that the BJP cannot take advantage of a division in the opposition,” he said.

Asked about the possibility of Mamata Banerjee-led ruling party in Bengal being in it, the CPI(M) leader claimed that the Trinamool Congress’ credibility as an anti-BJP force has “always been questionable.”

Claiming that politics is not just about arithmetic and adding numbers, he said that it has to be seen who is a consistent ally.

“If the entire purpose of the Trinamool and the BJP is to isolate the Left and the Congress and the other secular forces, then the point is what in the future they will do together,” he asked.

In the past a number of opposition parties uch as DMK, the Left, RJD, JD(U) and NCP have held meetings to forge an understanding ahead of the 2024 general elections. However, the Trinamool Congress at that time had indicated it would like to remain equidistant from both the Congress and BJP.

Nevertheless, after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification, the TMC Supremo Mamata Banerjee tweeted her condemnation and the party started sending its representative to various opposition programs.

Yechury termed as “peculiar” the Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s assertion that if their lives “are difficult or made difficult with the support of the State”, would the Indian Muslim population be growing.

“This very argument is completely unacceptable,” he said.

The Left leader claimed that the real wages in India have remained stagnant over the last eight years of the Narendra Modi government.

“With inflation soaring, if the real wages are stagnant, that means people’s consumption are declining, which means poverty levels are increasing,” he said.

Yechury claimed that in the last 10 years, two India’s have emerged – shining India and suffering India, with the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer.

Alleging misuse of the ED, CBI and governors, he also claimed that the democratic system in the country is being destroyed.

Yechury questions Centre’s reluctance in allowing JPC to probe Adani issue

    [ad_1]

Thiruvananthapuram: CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury on Saturday lambasted the BJP-led government at the Centre for not allowing a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) to examine the alleged “Adani scam” and charged that it is to hide the nexus between the corporate house and Prime Minister Narendra Modi dispensation.

If there is nothing to hide and nothing is wrong, why is the Modi government refusing to inquire into the scam? he asked.

Charging that the “communal corporate nexus” that has emerged under the Modi government is actually together destroying the foundational pillars of the Indian constitutional order, he also said the worst form of “crony capitalism” has developed under the BJP regime.

Yechury was speaking after inaugurating the culmination of the month-long “Jana Jagratha Yatra” led by party’s state secretary M V Govindan here highlighting the anti-people policies of the Centre.

“If there is nothing wrong, why they are not allowing a Joint Parliamentary Committee to examine the said issue (Adani scam)? The JPC, according to Parliamentary norms, will be headed by the party that has maximum number of MPs which is BJP,” he said adding that but still they were afraid of the JPC.

Because, what is being hidden is the link between the corporate house and the Modi government and the truth of the crony capitalism, the Marxist veteran said.

If anybody questions the PM or the government, then they are immediately branded as anti-nationals and that is the most serious thing happening in the country now-a-days, the leader said giving the example of the recent BBC documentary on Gujarat riots.

“If you are questioning the Prime Minister, you are questioning India…you are anti-national….Any question of Modi is anti-national and any question of Adani is anti-national.”

Like the country had given a reply to the slogan “India is Indira and Indira is India” decades ago, he urged the people to give a firm reply to Narendra Modi also in the coming Lok Sabha polls.

India is neither Indira nor Modi-Adani but people of the country and it can be asserted only if this government at the Centre is removed from office, he said.

Noting that removing the Modi government from office is of paramount importance to defend the Constitutional order, democracy and democratic rights of people, Yechury said that is the most “patriotical duty” of all Indians today.

“And that is the final test of Indian nationalism and that is the final test of whether we are for the interest of India or for enemies of the country.”

The Left leader also alleged that the four foundational pillars of the Constitutional order-secular democracy, economic self-sovereignty, social justice and federalism-are facing threat under the BJP rule.

He claimed that there is much focus on the Pinarayi Vijayan-led LDF government in Kerala as the BJP and the central government are well aware that it is the only non-BJP state government in the country that is offering an alternative model for development.

There are a lot of false stories being spread to defame Kerala, but President Droupadi Murmu’s recent words praising the achievements of the state in various sectors is the befitting reply for that false propaganda, he added.

Centre using government agencies as political weapons: Sitaram Yechury

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Speaking to the media at the day-long hunger strike led by Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader K. Kavitha at Jantar Mantar here on Friday, national general secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M), Sitaram Yechury said that the Centre has been using government agencies as political weapons and violating the constitutional system.

Yechury appealed to all the opposition parties to put pressure on Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he had promised that he would implement the Women’s Reservation Bill 9 years ago, which is still stuck in the Lok Sabha.

He added that there is a need to pressurise the Central government to pass the bill.

The CPI-M leader said that the Centre is misusing the government agencies and harassing leaders.

He added that the BJP says that leaders who claim to be innocent should answer the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

He stated that all the leaders who have been summoned to appear before the ED, have done so and cooperated in its inquiry by answering the questions asked.

He said that the media should understand that all the leaders gathered at the protest site are here in support of the Women’s Reservation Bill and not to unite opposition parties.
