Border trade between Pakistan & China to resume next week after 3 years

    [ad_1]

Islamabad: After a three-year hiatus, Pakistan and China are set to resume trade from Monday through the Khunjerab Pass – the only land route between the two all-weather allies, a media report said on Saturday.

The Khunjerab Pass was closed in November 2019 to contain the transmission of the COVID-19 virus between the two countries.

The arrangements to reopen the border point for bilateral trade and other activities under the China-Pakistan Eco nomic Corridor (CPEC) have been finalised by both sides, the Dawn newspaper reported.

    MS Education Academy

The USD 60 billion CPEC, which connects Gwadar Port in Balochistan with China’s Xinjiang province, is the flagship project of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s ambitious Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The CPEC is a network of roads, railways, pipelines, and ports in Pakistan connecting China to the Arabian Sea.

Gilgit-Baltistan Home Secretary Rana Mohammad Saleem Afzal said that officials on both sides agreed to reopen Khunjerab Pass for trade and travel activities from April 3. He added that the process of issuing border passes would start soon, the report said.

“Most important aspect is that it’s a CPEC route. CPEC consignments will enter Pakistan through Khunjerab Pass from China,” he said.

Under an agreement, trade and travel activities between the two countries through the Khunjerab Pass start annually on April 1 and close on November 30. Daily bus service also plies from the Sost Valley of the Gilgit-Baltistan region to the Xinjiang province of China, the report said.

The first trade activity between China and Pakistan under the CPEC started via the Karakoram Highway in November 2016.

Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Hina Rabbani Khar, said that the federal government had been working to revive CPEC activities, the report said. She added that all hurdles in the bilateral trade’s way would be removed.

The prolonged closure of the Khunjerab Pass caused immense financial hardships to the local business community, and thousands of workers became jobless, the report said, quoting officials.

During the last three years, the Pass was occasionally opened for emergency cargo transportation from China to Pakistan on specific days.

The volume of trade between the two countries would increase after the reopening of the Khunjerab Pass, Gilgit-Baltistan Collector of Customs Syed Fawad Ali Shah was quoted as saying in the report.

He said all required arrangements had been finalised for normal trade at the Sost dry port. Shah added that he met traders, the port management and other stakeholders, who were all happy and assured the administration of their cooperation in smooth trade activities at the dry port.

Haji Liaquat of the Gilgit-Baltistan Importers and Exporters Association said that the people affiliated with trade between the two countries were optimistic about the revival of economic activities in the region, according to the report.

He added that the people of the region and the government exchequer suffered losses worth billions of rupees owing to the prolonged halt of trade at the Sost dry port.

  • 30 Years After Student’s Death in Fake Encounter, Court Hands Life Term to Retired Policeman – Kashmir News

    [ad_1]

30 Years After Student’s Death in Fake Encounter, Court Hands Life Term to Retired Policeman

Over three decades after the death of a 21-year-old man in a fake encounter here, a local court on Friday sentenced a retired sub inspector to life imprisonment. Additional Sessions Judge Pashupatinath Mishra on Wednesday held Yudhisther Singh, the then sub inspector, guilty of killing Mukesh Johri alias Lali, on July 23, 1992 in Bada Bazar area of the city.

The court awarded life imprisonment to Singh on Friday and also imposed a fine of Rs 30,000 on him, government counsel Ashutosh Dubey said.

It said the fine amount will be provided to relatives of the victim.

According to police, Singh, who was posted at Thana Kotwali, claimed to have killed Lali in an encounter in self-defence. The then SI had filed a case of robbery and murderous attack against the victim.

In a report submitted by Singh, he had alleged that while returning after buying household items from Bada Bazar on the fateful day, he saw three people having a dispute with a salesman of the Pink City Wine Shop and anticipating robbery, he challenged the accused and one of them opened fire on him, but he escaped narrowly.

The SI had said that if he had not fired, the miscreants would have killed him. He said he fired at one of them with his official revolver due to which he fell down bleeding.

Singh, however, was accused of killing Lali, a second-year BA student, by the victim’s family.

Chandra Johri, the mother of the deceased, had taken refuge in the Supreme Court to file a report against Singh and others, and later the investigation was handed over to the CB-CID. “In the inquiry, it was found that Singh was not on duty at the time of the incident and misused his official revolver. The then SI had said that Lali was shot from the front, but the post-mortem examination revealed that the bullet was found in the back,” Dubey said, adding that there was no encounter and Singh deliberately fired at the victim with the intention of killing him.

On November 20, 1997, an FIR for murder was registered against Singh on the complaint letter of Inspector Sheeshpal Singh of the CB-CID.

‘Jail Ka Taala Tuth Gaya’: What Raja Singh sang at this year’s Ram Navami rally

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The annual Sri Ram Navami Shobha Yatra here has become a show of strength for Hindutva groups to flex. The procession has also become a launchpad for Hindutva mascot and suspended BJP MLA Raja Singh to release new inflammatory ‘songs’ every year. In 2022, he sang a song degenerating Muslims and threatened to “kick” them out of India if they “don’t chant Ram’s name”. This year was no different.

Here’s a cursory glance at what Raja Singh said at the Ram Navami Shobha Yatra on Thursday. The MLA released a few more songs at his mega saffron rally, which were officially uploaded on some Youtube Channels and played during the Shobha Yatra procession.

Raja Singh as a practice has been singing songs and releasing them during the Sri Rama Navami festival each year. One of latest songs, ‘Baap Tu Baap Rahega’, was clearly a dig at the ruling government (or even the cops) for arresting him last year and putting him in the jail under the PD Act after he released a video passing derogatory comments against Prophet Muhammad. He did that in retaliation against the state got allowing comic Munawar Faurqui to hold a show.

The lyrics also make mention his PD Act detention following registration of a series of cases for making derogatory remarks against Prophet Mohammed in a video and also old cases booked against him for delivering hate speeches. The lyrics goes ‘Jail Ka Taala Tuth Gaya, Baap Tumhara Choot Gaya’. The song is of 5:10 minutes duration.

People who joined Singh’s Hindutva rally waved photos of Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin, now a beloved Hindutva figure.

    nathuram godse

His song further also goes on the usual demand of turning India into a Hindu nation. ‘Hindu Rashtra Banega Hindustan. Jitehjeh Hamko Karna Heh Kaam. Desh Yeh Sarah Bhagwa Rangse Sajehgah’. Raja Singh as usual was the centre of attraction at the Sri Rama Navami Shobha Yatra on Thursday as well.

Raja Singh also threatened to “see the end” of anyone who dares to touch his son or family. “If anything happens to me, my son will take the Hindutva cause forward,” the suspended MLA said, while introducing his son to the Ram Navami Shobha Yatra on Thursday.

Demands for formation of ‘Hindu Rashtra’

The MLA known for his hateful rhetoric against minorities, was once again trying to promulgate his ideologue among the masses gathered to participate in the religious procession. He is currently out on bail from the Telangana high court, allowed him to walk out out on the condition that he would not participate in public rallies and meetings.

On Thursday, hundreds of men, women and children participated in the procession and T Raja Singh asked them all to “work hard to form a Hindu Rashtra”. “Those who oppose formation of a Hindu Rashtra should go away to any other Islamic country of their choice including Pakistan or Bangladesh. After the Hindu Rashtra is formed the capital of the country would be Ayodhya, Kashi or Mathura. If a Hindu nation is formed cow slaughter and love jihad will automatically stopped,” said the controversial MLA.

Raja Singh also claimed that said soon West Bengal, Kerala and some other States will become Muslim nations. “The Hindus need to be vigilant and careful,” he warned. He also administered a pledge to scores of youngsters at Begum Bazar Chatri to “work for formation of a Hindu Rashtra”.

Before the pledge he said there are 100 crore Hindus in India. “There are 50 Islamic countries in the world and more than 150 countries where majority citizens are Christians. I want to ask you all, why there can’t be a Hindu Rashtra. Why can’t Bharat be Hindu Rashtra? Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan and Bangladesh were formed after getting separated from India,” Raja Singh said.

“The law and order situation has improved appreciably in J&K and this year highest number of 1.88 crore tourists visited J&K,” he said.

Under “My Youth My Pride, Har Din Khel Har Ek Kay Liye Khel”, he said, nearly 50 lakh youth have participated in different sports activities this year.

Under Digital J&K initiative, he said, 445 online services are being provided through

J&K is the first among States/Union Territories to have District Good Governance Index for assessing the public service delivery at district level, he said.

“Aspirational Panchayat Development Programme, Aspirational Block Development Programme and Aspirational Town Development Programme are the three new initiatives being implemented in J&K.”

He said highest ever investment of Rs 1547.87 crore received during the last 10 months of this year. “500 start ups have come up during last 3 years.”

Unemployment rate, he said, is marginally reduced. “33426 posts have been referred to recruiting agencies. 25450 selections have been made including 2436 selections of J&K Bank Limited. Around 2, 02,749 youth have been covered under various self-employment schemes and the target is to cover 2, 37,000 by end of current year,” he said, adding, “Next year around 3 lakh will be covered under all the self-employment schemes.”

  • Gujarat govt paid Rs 16,900 cr in two years to Adani, Tata firms to buy electricity

Gujarat govt paid Rs 16,900 cr in two years to Adani, Tata firms to buy electricity

    [ad_1]

Gandhinagar: The Gujarat government has paid Rs 16,900 crore to Adani Power and Tata Power for purchasing electricity during the last two years, the state Assembly was informed on Monday.

As per the data tabled by Energy Minister Kanubhai Desai during Question Hour, the state government paid Rs 8,160 crore to Adani Power Mundra Ltd while Rs 8,784 was paid to Coastal Gujarat Power Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Power, in 2021 and 2022.

While responding to a set of questions raised by Congress MLAs about the purchase of electricity from these private players, Desai said the state government paid Rs 2,760 crore to Adani Power in 2021 to buy 5,589 million units while Rs 5,400 crore was paid to the firm in 2022 for nearly 6,000 million units.

In 2021, the state government paid Rs 2,751 crore to Tata Power to buy 7,315 million units, while the cost came to Rs 6,033 crore for 10,446 million units in 2022.

The data suggested per unit cost of Rs 2.83 paid to Adani in January 2021 went up to Rs 8.83 per unit in December 2022 (provisional). Similarly, Tata Power charged Rs 4.92 per unit from the government in 2022 against Rs 1.80 in January 2021.

Desai said the per unit cost of electricity went up after 2018 due to “exponential rise” in the price of imported coal, which had forced such power generators to shut their plants in Gujarat.

To ensure people of Gujarat get uninterrupted power, the state government had signed new supplementary agreements with Adani to pay as per the actual cost of fuel, said Desai.

Again in 2021, when gas and imported coal prices saw significant rise, the state government, to ensure uninterrupted power supply, bought electricity from these firms under “special temporary arrangement” as approved by the Centre and state government, Desai said in the Assembly.

Man sentenced to 100 years in prison for causing Indian-origin girl’s death in US

    [ad_1]

Washington: A 35-year-old man has been sentenced to 100 years of hard labour for causing the death of a 5-year-old Indian-origin girl in the US state of Louisiana in 2021, according to local media reports.

Joseph Lee Smith from Shreveport was sentenced following his conviction in January of the killing of Mya Patel, local news media outlets like KSLA News 12 and the Shreveport Times reported.

Patel was playing in a hotel room on Monkhouse Drive when a bullet entered her room and struck her in the head. Patel was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she battled for three days and was pronounced dead on March 23, 2021.

During Smith’s trial, it was revealed to the jury that Smith got into an altercation with another man in the parking lot of the Super 8 Motel.

The hotel was owned and operated at that time by Vimal and Snehal Patel, who lived in a ground-floor unit with Mya and a younger sibling.

During the altercation, Smith struck the other man with a 9-mm handgun, which discharged. The bullet missed the other man but went into the hotel room and struck Patel in the head before grazing her mother.

District Judge John D Mosely sentenced Smith to 60 years at hard labour without the benefit of probation, parole or reduction of sentence in connection with the March 2021 slaying of Mya Patel, reports said.

Smith also must serve 20 years for obstruction of justice and 20 years for aggravated battery, for separate convictions associated with Patel’s slaying. Those terms must also be served without the benefit of probation, parole or reduction of sentence, the reports said.

On Thursday, the Caddo Parish District Attorney’s Office said: “the terms were enhanced by Smith being a repeat felony offender and must be served consecutively, for a total of 100 years.”
