Turkey-Armenia border gate reopens after 30 years for quake aid

    [ad_1]

Ankara: A border gate between Turkey and Armenia has been opened for the first time in 30 years for the passage of humanitarian assistance for victims of the devastating earthquakes hitting southern Turkey, the state-run Anadolu News Agency reported.

An Armenian delegation with five trucks of aid has entered Turkey through the Alican Border Gate in the eastern province of Igdir, the report said on Saturday.

The Armenian aid delegation carrying 100 tonnes of food, medicine, and drinking water passed through the gate in the morning toward the southeastern province of Adiyaman, according to a tweet on Saturday by Serdar Kilic, Turkey’s special representative for normalisation talks with Armenia.

On Tuesday, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan offered condolences and support to the Turkish people in a phone conversation with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Xinhua news agency reported.

Armenia has sent 27 rescuers to quake-hit Turkey to assist in the search-and-rescue operations, the country’s Internal Affairs Ministry said on Wednesday.

The Alican Border Gate was last used in the 1988 earthquake in Armenia when the Turkish Red Crescent crossed the border gate to dispatch aid to disaster areas.

Turkey severed diplomatic relations and closed the border with Armenia in 1993 in support of Azerbaijan which was fighting a war with Armenia over the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh, before the two neighbours launched talks for the re-normalisation of relations in 2022.

On Monday, two devastating earthquakes measuring 7.7- and 7.6-magnitude hit 10 provinces in southern Turkey, killing at least 21,848 so far and injuring more than 80,000, according to the latest figures.

  • Saudi increases prison sentence of US citizen to 19 years for tweets

Saudi increases prison sentence of US citizen to 19 years for tweets

    [ad_1]

Riyadh: The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia court has increased the sentenced of Saad Ibrahim Almadi, who holds both Saudi and American nationalities, to 19 years in prison, local media reported.

72-year-old Saad Ibrahim Almadi, retired project manager living in Florida, was arrested in November 2021, while visiting family in the kingdom and was sentenced in October 2022 to 16 years.

Saudi court convicted him of attempting to destabilize the kingdom and supporting terrorism.

As per media reports, Saad Almadi had been detained over 14 tweets posted on Twitter over the past seven years, mostly criticizing government policies and accusing them of corruption. He was also banned from traveling for 16 years.

As per New York Post, the US State Department informed Ibrahim Almadi of the new Saudi punishment, on Wednesday, February 8, months after the White House publicly condemned the mistreatment of his father, Saad Almadi.

Ibrahim, criticized the handling of his father’s case after the US State Department told him that his father would spend a longer period in prison.

He told The New York Post, ‘It’s not a slap in the face, it’s a middle finger. When the US asked for an appeal, they said: “Here you go, 19 years!”‘

This appears to be the latest in a series of recent cases in which Saudis have been sentenced to lengthy prison terms for social media posts critical of the government.

    Wave of arrests

Since Mohammed bin Salman, also known as MBS, became the Saudi crown prince in June 2017, dozens of imams, women’s rights activists and members of the ruling royal family have been detained.

In August 2022, Saudi court sentenced a woman Nourah bint Saeed al-Qahtani to 45 years in prison for using Twitter to express her opinions.

This conviction of Nourah Al-Qahtani comes less than a month after another Saudi woman, Salma al-Shehab, was sentenced to 34 years in prison and given a further 34-year travel ban for following and retweeting activists on Twitter.

Similarly, in August 2022, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Courts of Appeal sentenced a prominent former imam and preacher at the Grand Mosque in Makkah Sheikh Saleh Al Talib to ten years in prison.

Among those arrested are prominent Islamic preachers Salman al-Awdah, Awad al-Qarni, Farhan al-Malki, Mostafa Hassan and Safar al-Hawali.

  • Telangana’s migrant worker freed from Dubai jail after 14 years

Telangana’s migrant worker freed from Dubai jail after 14 years

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: A migrant worker from Telangana’s Nizamabad district, who was jailed after being convicted in an alleged murder case, was released from Dubai jail after almost 14 years.

Makuri Shankar of Mendora village spent a decade of his life in Fujairah jail in Dubai and reached his home town on Friday.

He went to Dubai for employment in 2006 and worked as a foreman in a company for three years.

However, an unusual incident happened in 2009 when he was supposed to return to his native land.

A coworker of Shankar accidentally fell down from the sixth floor of an under-construction building and died. The Dubai Police after investigating the incident held Shankar responsible for the man’s death and locked him up.

Following the arrest, Shankar defended himself that he had no relation to the incident and was only carrying out his job at the site.

He justified by saying that the man had slipped and fallen by accident which was ignored by the court of Dubai which handed him a death sentence in 2013.

Shanker then appealed for a reconsideration of his punishment following which the court directed that the family of the deceased should bring an amnesty document in order to avoid the death sentence.

Shankar’s family, along with TDP leader Degam Yadagoud from Nizamabad district approached a lawyer in Dubai who revealed to them that the man who died belonged to Rajasthan.

They then approached the deceased’s family members and offered them financial assistance of Rs.5 lakh and got an amnesty paper signed by them and presented it to the Dubai court following which the court acquitted Shankar of the death penalty.

Finally, Shankar with the help of migrants’ rights activists after securing the pardon of the victim’s family reached home on Friday after almost 17 years.

  • Around 5000 Kanals Of Custodian Land Retrieved In Last Two Years Across Kashmir: Govt

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: The government on Thursday said that around 5000 kanals of custodian land have been retrieved across Kashmir in the last two years and that the people whose property is being illegally occupied by the land grabbers should approach the department to take a due course in this regard.

Quoting custodian Evacuee Property Department, Kashmir, Tariq Hussain Naik news agency KNO reported that the department has been putting every effort to identify the custodian land that has been notified years ago.

“We have been working from the last two years to ascertain how much land is notified and how much land is in the records in the Revenue department. Almost 80 per cent of our reconciliation has been completed with the Revenue Department so far,” he said. He also added that so far, the department has been able to retrieve around 5000 kanals of custodian land in different districts across Kashmir.

He added that there is a misconception and to end it, the people should know that the custodian land is only a private property. “We are retrieving the land and the process under Evacuee Act is being followed. If a property is notified once, it will remain so until and unless somebody will not claim the land through proper procedure,” he said.

Stating that the retrieval of custodian land at present is not new, but it is a continuous process; however, he said that nobody will be displaced or disturbed anywhere.

“As per the procedure, if a structure is being raised anywhere illegally on the custodian land, we demolish it, but if a structure is already raised years ago, then we have a provision for that and we will have to notify it following which the rent is being fixed,” he said.

He also said that if the land of any person has been grabbed illegally by anyone, he or she should approach the department and a due course will be taken as per the provision of the Act to restore the property under section 14 of the Evacuee Property Act.

‘2022 records highest arrival of 12 lakh migratory birds in Kashmir, 40 lakh in last 4 years’

    [ad_1]

Srinagar, Feb 09: Amid the ongoing Integrated Management Action Plan (IMAP) for Wetland Conservation Reserves of Kashmir, authorities at J&K Wildlife Department claim that more than 40 lakh migratory birds arrived in the valley wetlands in the last four years, while 2022 recorded the highest arrival with more than 12 lakh guest birds.

Wildlife Warden Wetlands, Ifshan Dewan told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that the last four years recorded the arrival of more than 40 lakh migratory birds in the valley wetlands. “2022 recorded the highest numbers with as many as 12 lakh migratory birds visiting Kashmir,” she said.

Ifshan also said that the census of migratory birds for the year 2023 is likely to start next week.

According to the statistical figures shared by the Wildlife Department, the year 2019 recorded the arrival of around 9 lakh migratory birds, 8 lakh in 2020, 11 lakh in 2021 and approximately 12 lakh in 2022.

We have recorded the arrival of around 70 species of migratory birds, Dewan said.

While the officials last month said that a rare species of migratory duck was sighted at Wullar Lake after 84 years; every year, lakhs of migratory birds from Siberia, Europe, and Central Asia arrive in the Kashmir Valley.

As per the authorities at the Jammu and Kashmir Wildlife Department, interventions are taking place under the Integrated Management Action Plan (IMAP) in various wetlands of Kashmir in order to improve the habitat conditions to make them suitable for migratory waterfowl.

Notably, the five-year Integrated Management Action Plan (IMAP) 2022-2027 for Kashmir Wetland Conservation Reserves has outlined a number of threats and challenges in conserving the valley’s wetlands.

According to the document, the risks to the valley wetlands include siltation, weed infestation, pollution, habitat modification, water quality degradation, solid waste, and encroachment—(KNO)
