After layoffs, Zuckerberg now wants 2023 to be ‘year of efficiency’

San Francisco: After laying off 11,000 employees, Meta Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg now wants 2023 to be the “year of efficiency”.

In his quarterly earnings call with analysts late on Wednesday, Zuckerberg said that “I just think we’ve entered somewhat of a phase change for the company”.

He said that global headcount steadily climbed for nearly two decades, making it “very hard to really crank on efficiency while you’re growing that quickly”.

After the layoffs, Zuckerberg said he is focused on “increasing the efficiency of how we make decisions”.

Meanwhile, Zuckerberg has now reportedly put middle managers at the company on notice.

According to the newsletter Command Line by The Verge’s Alex Heath, Zuckerberg warned managers at a recent all-hands meeting.

“I don’t think you want a management structure that’s just managers managing managers, managing managers, managing managers, managing the people who are doing the work,” the Meta CEO apparently told them.

Ukraine’s grain harvest to reach 49.5 mn ton this year: Forecast

Kiev: Ukraine is forecast to have a grain harvest of about 49.5 million ton this year, the Interfax-Ukraine news agency reported, citing a forecast by the Economy Ministry.

While commenting on the forecast, Ukrainian First Deputy Economy Minister Denys Kudin said on Wednesday that the projected harvest will enable Ukraine to fully cover its domestic demand for grain.

At the current stage, the Ministry sees no need to restrict the exports of agricultural products from Ukraine, Kudin added.

As of January 27, Ukrainian farmers reaped 52.6 million ton of grain and legumes of the 2022 harvest from 96 per cent of sowed areas, Xinhua news agency reported.

Ukraine for years has been a key global producer of wheat, corn and sunflower oil. In 2021, the country’s harvest of cereals and legumes hit a record high of 84 million ton, up 28.5 per cent year-on-year.

In the current marketing year, between July 1, 2022, and January 30, 2023, Ukraine exported about 26.3 million ton of grain, down 30.8 per cent from the same period of the previous marketing year.

Govt to continue 50-year interest-free loans to states for another year: Sitharaman

New Delhi: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday announced that the Centre will continue 50-year interest-free loans to state governments for one more year.

She also said the enhanced capex of Rs 10 lakh crore for infrastructure development is at 3.3 percent of the GDP.

Presenting the Budget for 2023-24, she said the newly established infrastructure finance secretariat will assist in attracting more private investment.

An expert committee will also be set up to make infrastructure classification and financing framework suitable for Amrit Kaal, she added.

On October 13 last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Gati Shakti – National Master Plan, aimed at developing an integrated infrastructure to reduce logistics costs.

All logistics and connectivity infrastructure projects, entailing an investment of over Rs 500 crore, are routed through the NPG, constituted under the PM Gati Shakti initiative.

She also informed that the PM Primitive Vulnerable Tribal Group scheme would benefit 3.5 lakh tribals.

Pfizer reports record revenue, expects Covid-19 vaccines to be commercialized later this year

In its 2022 fourth-quarter earnings call, company executives said that they expect sales of Covid-19 vaccines to decrease, in part because they still have shots that the government purchased last year to distribute.

The decline in revenue also comes in part because an estimated 24 percent of the population will receive a Covid-19 vaccine this year, down from 31 percent in 2022 as fewer people comply with federal recommendations.

“Fewer people are expected to receive their primary doses,” Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla said. “And for the most part only those who are older or at higher risk are expected to continue receiving more than one booster per year.”

Pfizer expects to account for about two thirds of Covid vaccinations, and Bourla estimated about 102 million shots of its vaccine, called Comirnaty, would be distributed this year. The company is not expecting any new Covid variants that would prompt more people to get vaccinated.

The company also noted that the U.S. government had previously purchased a set number of Covid-19 vaccines; but moving forward, there will be less demand once the vaccine is sold on the commercial market.

Company executives did not mention how much they plan to charge for their Covid products on the commercial market but have previously stated it would be somewhere between $110 and $130 per dose. Moderna, which also makes an mRNA Covid-19 vaccine, has floated a price of $110 to $130 per dose.

On Monday, the White House announced that it would end the Covid-19 emergency declarations in May. And last week, the FDA’s Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee discussed the steps it would need to take for a simplified Covid-19 vaccine regimen as it moves toward a model of managing the virus on a yearly basis, similar to the way flu shots are developed and administered.

Pfizer has its sights set on future iterations of Covid-19 vaccines, which it expects will be needed as immunity wanes as the virus continues to mutate.

“We expect to see an increase in Covid-19 vaccination rates assuming the successful development and approval of a Covid-flu combination product,” Bourla said, noting that about half of eligible adults receive a flu shot annually.

Other products in the pipeline: Pfizer also noted that it expects to launch its RSV vaccine for adults 60 and older this year. The FDA said Tuesday that it would convene its external vaccine advisory committee to discuss its application in late February.

The company is also developing an mRNA-based flu vaccine and an mRNA-based shingles vaccine.

TSBIE cuts inter first year practical exam syllabus by 30 pc

Hyderabad: Telangana State Board of Intermediate Education (TSBIE) has decided to reduce inter first practical exam syllabus to 70 percent. However, there will be no change in inter second year syllabus.

The practical exams are scheduled to be held in February 2023.

As per the press release by TSBIE, there will be no change in the theory syllabus of inter exams for first and second year. The inter exams for both years will be conducted in 100 percent syllabus.

Demand to postpone exams

Meanwhile, a few students are demanding the postponement of Telangana inter practical exams alleging that no practical classes were conducted in their colleges.

In some junior colleges, practical classes are not conducted in inter first. In the second year too, the classes are held just before the examination thereby leaving students confused.

It is alleged that some colleges don’t even have proper equipment needed to conduct lab.

English likely to be added to Telangana inter practical exams

TSBIE is gearing up to introduce English practical lab in intermediate courses.

From next academic year, the English practical exam is likely to be conducted for 20 marks by reducing the weightage of the English theory exam to 80.

The board has taken this decision to improve the spoken and comprehension skills of the inter students.
