40,000 women in J&K already lakhpati as they earn over Rs 1 lakh in one year: Mission Dir J&KRLM

    [ad_1]

Srinagar, Mar 14: Mission Director, Jammu and Kashmir Rural Livelihood Mission (JKRLM), Indu Kanwal Chib on Tuesday said that 40,000 women in Jammu & Kashmir are ‘lakhpati’ as they earn over Rs one lakh a year and that under the supervision of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, a big e-commerce platform will soon be started for the women entrepreneurs in the Union Territory.

Talking to the reporters, Chib, as per the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) said that the J&KRLM is going to organize an 11-day National level fair SARAS (Sale of Articles and Rural Artisan Society) from tomorrow on the banks of world famous Dal Lake Near Ghat No- 8 Boulevard Road.

She said that such events are being organized frequently outside J&K, but in the UT, the frequency was too low. However, we have started organizing such events and after Jammu, the event will be organized from tomorrow in Kashmir as well. SARAS is a marketing strategy for the rural artisans to sell their products,” she said.

Under the UMEED scheme, she said that there are many platforms where the women are being skilled in both farm and non-farm skills.

At present, Self help groups of 78000 people have been engaged, she said that there are many entrepreneurs in J&K. “For me, those selling milk at home are also entrepreneurs. 40,000 women are lakhati as they are earning more than one lakh a year and 65 per cent among them are entrepreneurs,” she said.

“The time has changed as the women are not behind the men. From drivers to carpenters, women can do everything. But, it is not a race,” she said while replying to a query.

She further said that under UMEED scheme, a big e-commerce platform is being made available under the supervision of Lieutenant Governor and that the work is already going on with ‘Meesho’—(KNO)

  • Mary Kom wants Asian Games to be her swansong, says ‘I’ll be forced to retire next year’

Mary Kom wants Asian Games to be her swansong, says ‘I’ll be forced to retire next year’

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Racing against time to get fit, six-time world champion boxer MC Mary Kom is targeting the Asian Games as her swansong in the ring before she is “forced” to retire next year.

The veteran pugilist, who had torn her anterior cruciate ligament after twisting her left knee during the Commonwealth Games selection trials last year, underwent a reconstructive surgery to repair the ACL tear in August.

“What happened during the Commonwealth Games trials was very unfortunate. I suffered a major injury and I had to undergo a surgery,” Mary said at the unveiling of the Indian team jersey ahead of the women’s World Championship.

“I’m trying to come back soon. Because I have only this year, next year I’ll be forced to retire. So this year I want to compete in any competition before the retirement.”

According to the rules, the maximum participation age for a boxer is 40 years and the Manipuri will turn 41 in November.

“I don’t want to retire at all. I want to compete for the next five years, but above 40, we can’t compete, that is the rule.”

“My main (target) is the Asian Games, hopefully I will recover by then. I will have time for preparation also. It is my dream to compete once this year before retirement.”

The Asian Games, which were postponed last year, are set to be held from September 23 to October 8 this year.

However, in order to be selected for the marquee-event, the London Olympics bronze medallist will have to go through the new selection process, which requires a boxer to go through an evaluation test in the national camp.

“My recovery is going very well. Very soon I’ll be able to run and train. I’m trying my level best. If I’m able to compete then I will try to beat the boxers to get selection.

“But if I don’t get fit by the Asian Games then I want to compete in any other international competition once.”

Boxing Federation of India President Ajay Singh said, “We will fully support her recovery process and her desire to box again and from our side, we will try to give her a wonderful send-off.”

The Asian Games is also a qualifying event for the 2024 Olympics and if Mary wins then she will have earned a quota for the Paris Games where she will not be eligible to participate due to her age.

“May be the IBA president will allow me to compete (at the Olympics),” she jokingly commented.

Asked if she plans to turn pro post retirement, Mary said she hasn’t decided yet.

“Pro is also not easy. But the easy part is in one year there are only two or one competition and the money is more. Amateur and pro are different.”

Want 3 medals from India at the World Championship

The multiple-time World Championship gold medallist will not compete in this edition due to her recovery from the injury but she will serve as the event’s brand ambassador alongside Bollywood actor Farhan Akhtar.

Having delivered year after year, Mary hopes the Indian contingent can bag three gold medals at home.

“I think India will win at least three golds. Since last many years, our girls are performing very well in international championship. This time we are hosting so why not,” said Mary, who won gold the previous two times India hosted the event in 2006 and 2018.

The BFI has announced hefty prize money for the tournament, with the gold medallist set to get USD 100,000, silver-medal winner USD 50,000 and bronze medallist USD 25,000.

But Mary warned the boxers to focus on their performance and not go after the money.

“You prove yourself in the ring, and money will come to you. If you are money-minded, you may not perform well. Attitude, arrogance and money can affect your training and preparation. Our performance should not suffer.”

  • Dubai: Private schools to increase fees from next academic year

Dubai: Private schools to increase fees from next academic year

    [ad_1]

Abu Dhabi: Dubai’s Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) announced on Friday that private schools can increase tuition fees for the next academic year.

Tuition fees for private schools in Dubai were frozen for the last three consecutive academic years.

“Taking into account the current economic and academic situation in Dubai, the approved rate for fee increase at Dubai private schools for the 2023-24 academic year is set at 3 percent,” KHDA tweeted.

The rate by which fees can be hiked is tied to each school’s most recent inspection rating from the Dubai Schools Inspection Bureau.

Methodology outlined by KHDA to increase school fees

    • Private schools that maintain the same inspection rating will be allowed to increase their fees by 3 percent
    • Schools that improve their rating from “weak” to “acceptable” and from “acceptable” to “good” can increase fees by up to 6 percent
    • Schools that move from “good” to “very good” can increase fees by 5.25 percent
    • Schools that improve from “very good” to “outstanding” can apply a 4.5 percent rise
    • Schools that fall lower in the annual rankings will not be eligible for any fee increase

Dubai-based private school giant GEMS announced on Friday that it will increase the salaries of faculty members. “We are pleased to confirm also today that we will be implementing teacher salary increases in April for our Indian curriculum schools and in September for our International schools,” Dino Varkey, Group CEO of GEMS Education told Arabian Business.

Tata Steel to manufacture 22 Vande Bharat trains in next one year

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Indian Railways has signed an agreement with Tata Steel under which the company will manufacture 22 trains of the country’s fastest and feature-rich Vande Bharat Express in the coming year.

The Ministry of Railways has set a production target of 200 Vande Bharat trains for the next two years, besides setting a target to run the first sleeper version of Vande Bharat by the first quarter of 2024.

Keeping this in view, an agreement has been signed between Indian Railways and Tata Steel on several schemes to speed up the production work.

The seats in the Vande Bharat Express, from first AC to three-tier coaches, will now be manufactured by Tata Steel. The contract for making Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches of the train has also been given to the company, under which structures of panels, windows and railways are being prepared.

Under the scheme, at present, the Indian Railways has given a tender of about Rs 145 crore to the multinational steel company for manufacturing the parts of the train, which is to be completed in 12 months.

The composites division of Tata Steel started working in this direction after receiving a bulk order for seating system of Vande Bharat Express, including 22 train sets with 16 coaches each.

Debashish Bhattacharya, Vice President (Technology and New Materials Business), Tata Steel, said: “The seats of this train are specially designed, which can rotate up to 180-degree and have aircraft-like passenger amenities which are a first in India.”

According to sources, Tata Steel is constantly engaged in increasing its stake in the Railways and has also posted officials for coordinating with the Railways.

  • FCC nominee Gigi Sohn withdraws after more than a year of fighting for post

FCC nominee Gigi Sohn withdraws after more than a year of fighting for post

    [ad_1]

The narrow Democratic majority in the Senate — and ongoing reservations from moderates like Manchin — presented challenges to advancing Sohn’s bid, particularly given sustained attacks from conservative, industry and police interests. If Democrats had remained united, they would have been able to confirm Sohn and seat a Democratic majority at the FCC.

The commission, meanwhile, has lacked a Democratic majority for the entirety Biden’s time in the White House. It’s not immediately clear who Biden will nominate next for the seat, but it will likely take several months for the Senate to consider a new contender.

A White House official confirmed Sohn’s decision to POLITICO, and the administration seemed to acknowledge the withdrawal publicly.

“We appreciate Gigi Sohn’s candidacy for this important role,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said during Tuesday’s briefing. “She would have brought tremendous intellect and experience, which is why the president nominated her in the first place.”

Sohn, a former counselor to Obama-era FCC Chair Tom Wheeler and an advocate for net neutrality, also confirmed the decision, sharing a statement first reported by The Washington Post. According to that statement, she made the decision Monday night.

“When I accepted his nomination over sixteen months ago, I could not have imagined that legions of cable and media industry lobbyists, their bought-and-paid-for surrogates, and dark money political groups with bottomless pockets would distort my over 30-year history as a consumer advocate into an absurd caricature of blatant lies,” Sohn said in the statement. “The unrelenting, dishonest and cruel attacks on my character and my career as an advocate for the public interest have taken an enormous toll on me and my family. Unfortunately, the American people are the real losers here.”

Sohn ultimately faced senators across three confirmation hearings since Biden first tapped her for the post. Her nomination, which awaited a committee vote in 2023, never received floor consideration.
