Oppn calls out PT Usha over her remarks on protesting wrestlers

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Several opposition leaders hit out at Indian Olympic Association president PT Usha on Friday for criticising a protest by wrestlers in Delhi, alleging she has become a “political mouthpiece”.

The wrestlers have launched a second round of protest against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, accusing him of sexual harassment and intimidation.

Usha, a Rajya Sabha member, has condemned the protest, saying the grapplers lacked discipline in hitting the street in support of their demand. She also said their action has tarnished the image of India.

    MS Education Academy

Responding to Usha, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said ignoring their pleas tarnishes the country’s image, not their protest.

“Dear @PTUshaOfficial, it is does not become you to disparage the justified protests of your fellow sportspersons in the face of repeated & wanton sexual harassment. Their standing up for their rights does not ‘tarnish the image of the nation’. Ignoring their concerns – instead of hearing them out, investigating them & taking just action – does,” he said.

CPI MP Binoy Viswam blamed the sprinter’s “newly found” political friends for her stand on the issue.

“Usha, with utmost respect and affection, I have to say, your comments on the suffering wrestlers should have been avoided. The country and the sport lovers wish to see you as a spirited sports person. Alas! Your newly found friends want to make you their political mouthpiece,” Viswam said.

TMC MP Mahua Moitra also attributed the former sportswoman’s stand to her Rajya Sabha seat.

“Wrestlers protesting on streets tarnishing India’s image says @PTUshaOfficial. So ruling party MP chairing WFI for years accused of molestation & abuse of power against who @DelhiPolice refuses to lodge FIR in spite of SC order makes India smell of roses, does it?” tweeted Moitra.

Congress MP Jebi Mather said a person like P T Usha who is held in high esteem by every Indian, especially sports enthusiasts, stooping to the level of demeaning the wrestlers, is quite unwarranted and unexpected of her.

“By degrading the wrestlers, P T Usha has failed in the exercise of her duties as the President of Indian Olympic Association,” she said.

“Instead of standing by the side of her fellow sportspersons who are fighting for justice in the context of repeated instances of sexual harassment, Usha is playing petty politics. She owes an apology to the wrestlers. While the matter is sub-judice, it is quite suspicious that she has taken a stand against the wrestlers,” Mather said.

“The fact that Usha, who expressed solidarity with the wrestlers while they first raised the complaint in January, has now changed her stance raises questions regarding her intention,” she said.

Top wrestlers are protesting at Jantar Mantar in Delhi, demanding that the government make public the findings of the oversight panel that investigated sexual harassment allegations against the WFI chief.

Rajya Sabha member Mather said that being the president of the Indian Olympic Association, Usha should make efforts to ensure unity and equality among the sportspersons, not to create division.

She should make earnest efforts in resolving the issue at the earliest, the Congress MP added.

Don’t trust Delhi police, might file loose FIR against Brij Bhushan: Wrestlers

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The protesting wrestlers rejoiced “the first step towards victory” as Delhi Police decided to file an FIR against WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. However, they will continue their agitation and demanded that the BJP MP be removed from all the positions he holds.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Delhi Police, told a Supreme Court bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice P S Narasimha that the FIR would be registered on Friday.

The wrestlers, who have accused the WFI chief of sexual harassment and intimidation, have been demanding that an FIR be filed since they resumed their agitation on April 23.

“This is first step towards victory but our protest will continue,” Sakshi Malik told reporters at Jantar Mantar, where they put up huge banners, with one of those listing all the ongoing criminal proceedings against Brij Bhushan.

Vinesh Phogat said it took Delhi Police six days to file an FIR and they don’t trust the probe agency.

“It (Police) might file a loose FIR. We we will see, observe then take a decision (on calling off protest). He should be behind the bars and removed from all the posts he holds, otherwise he will try to influence the investigation,” World Championship medallist Vinesh said.

Attitude of Delhi Police rude: Women wrestlers to SC

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Seven women wrestlers have told the Supreme Court that it is crucial that police take all complaints of sexual harassment seriously and register FIRs promptly and not create yet another obstacle by delaying the registration.

However, the attitude of the police was shockingly rude towards the complainants.

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court issued notice to Delhi police on a plea by wrestlers seeking a direction for the registration of an FIR against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

    MS Education Academy

The plea said women athletes who make our nation proud are facing sexual harassment, and instead of getting the support they deserve, they are being forced to run from pillar to post to get justice.

It said the accused person, in this case, is an influential person and is misusing the process of law to evade justice and further manipulating the legal system and obstructing justice.

The plea said that “it is crucial that the police take all complaints of sexual harassment seriously and register FIRs promptly and not create yet another obstacle by delaying the registration of FIR”.

“Failure to do so not only undermines the credibility of the police department but also emboldens perpetrators of sexual harassment, making it more difficult for women to come forward and report such incidents.”

The plea contended that despite filing complaints which ex-facie disclose the commission of a cognizable offence, the Delhi Police in complete disregard of the law laid down by the constitutional bench of the apex court has failed to register FIRs against the persons accused therein.

“Inspite of the lapse of three days i.e., from April 21-24, no conclusive action has been taken by the Delhi Police. This clearly depicts a sad state of affairs and a clear violation of human rights. It is the responsibility of the police to ensure the safety of all citizens especially of those who are most vulnerable, however, having miserably failed to discharge their duties, the very institution that is meant to safeguard them,” said the plea.

The petitioners submitted that on April 21, they went to the police station at Connaught Place, with their formal written complaints and the police took the complaints and did not even issue a formal receipt of the complaint for about three hours.

“The Police officials were seen taking pictures of the complaints on their mobiles and sending the same here and there. The attitude of the police was shockingly rude towards the complainants. This is a grave injustice and a clear violation of their human rights,” said the plea.

The plea contended that after being sexually, emotionally, mentally, and physically exploited by the accused and his close aids on numerous occasions, the petitioners along with other wrestlers mustered up the courage to raise their voices before the appropriate authority against such acts and sat on protest (dharna) at Jantar Mantar seeking appropriate action against the perpetrators.

It added that the Ministry of Sports in wake of such allegations against the accused person, vide public notice dated January 23 decided to constitute a 5- member oversight committee to investigate the allegations on the receipt of the complaints received on the behest of the petitioners.

“The oversight committee took note of the allegations and the statements of the victims were recorded. However, it is distressing to know that despite the committee being formed, no concrete steps have been taken to address this critical issue.

“Further, as per print media, it is in circulation that the accused in fact has been given clean-chit in the matter and the report of the committee is lying at the Ministry of Sports and despite requests the report is not being made public,” said the petition.

The top court is likely to take up the petition for hearing on Friday.

SC issues notice on wrestlers’ plea seeking FIR against WFI chief

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday issued a notice on a plea by the country’s seven top wrestlers seeking a direction for the registration of an FIR against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

A bench headed by Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud and comprising Justice P.S. Narasimha, said: “There are serious allegation in plea on behest of international wrestlers with regards to sexual harassment meted out to them. Issue notice returnable on Friday. Liberty to serve standing counsel NCT Delhi. The complaints which form an attachment in sealed cover and shall be again resealeda.”.

The plea was mentioned before the bench by senior advocates Kapil Sibal and Narendra Hooda, representing the wrestlers.

    MS Education Academy

Sibal submitted that this is the wrestlers’ matter and they are sitting in dharna, and seven women have complained and one is a minor.

He stressed that an FIR has not been registered and added that the plea seeks one against Singh over alleged sexual harassment by women wrestlers.

During the hearing, Sibal argued that there is a committee report which has not been made public.

The Chief Justice asked Sibal to show the case papers.

Sibal said please see the complaint by the minor, the young girl had won a gold medal and added even the police personnel can be prosecuted for not registering an FIR.

He emphasized that the court should look at the allegations and the police are not acting.

After hearing submissions, the top court sought response from the Delhi Police.

According to the plea, the wrestlers have cited an inordinate delay in registration of FIR by the Delhi Police against the WFI President and urged the apex court to issue a direction to police to lodge a case.

The top court agreed with the petitioners to suppress their identity mentioned in the petition.

NCP wants Anurag Thakur, Irani to step in to resolve issues raised by wrestlers

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Sharad Pawar’s NCP said on Sunday that Union ministers Anurag Thakur and Smriti Irani should step in to address the concerns raised by top wrestlers protesting here against former Wrestling Federation of India chief Brijbhushan Sharan Singh.

“(Youth Affairs And Sports Minister) Anurag Thakur and Smriti Irani must intervene immediately and ask the Delhi Police, which works under the Union home ministry, to take immediate action. If they cannot do this for people who have won laurels for our country, then what can common citizens expect?” NCP spokesperson Clyde Crasto asked.

India’s top wrestlers, including Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat, returned to the protest site Jantar Mantar on Sunday and demanded that the government make public the findings of an oversight panel that investigated sexual harassment allegations against Singh.

    MS Education Academy

The six-member oversight panel, headed by legendary boxer MS Mary Kom, had submitted its report in the first week of April but the government has not yet made it public.

“Why is Woman and Child Development Minister Smriti Irani avoiding this issue. Would she have not raised it if it had happened in Amethi or Wayanad,” the NCP spokesperson asked.

Crasto said it was sad to see the kind of treatment meted out to the country’s wrestlers.

“The BJP-led NDA government at the Centre and their ministers bask in the glory of our sportspersons when they win laurels, but now the same are betraying them in their hour of need,” the NCP spokesperson said.

WFI sexual harassment case: Wrestlers back to protest at Jantar Mantar

    [ad_1]

Top Indian wrestlers who protested against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chairman and other coaches earlier this year, accusing them of sexually abusing female wrestlers, have returned to Delhi’s Jantar Mantar with a fresh police complaint.

Seven female wrestlers have filed a sexual harassment case against federation leader Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh at Central Delhi’s Connaught Place police station.

A First Information Report based on the complaint has yet to be submitted, wrestler Sakshee Malikh said expressing frustration that a government panel report on the topic has not yet been made public.

    MS Education Academy

“We want the report that contains the statements of the female wrestlers to be made public. It’s a sensitive issue, and one of the complainants is a minor girl,” she added and stressed that the complainants’ identities should not be revealed.

Another top wrestler Bajrang Punia stated that they won’t leave until Brij Bhushan is arrested.

Vinesh Phogat stated that despite numerous attempts to reach out, they have received no answer from the administration.

“We’re going to sleep and eat here until justice is served. For three months, we have been attempting to reach them (union sports minister Anurag Thakur and other relevant authorities). Members of the committee have not responded to us, nor has the sports ministry; they have not even returned our calls. We’ve won medals for the country and put our careers on the line for this,” she remarked.

On January 23, the Sports Ministry established a five-member monitoring committee, led by famed boxer MC Mary Kom, and instructed it to present its findings within one month.

On the protesting wrestlers’ request, it later extended the deadline by two weeks and appointed Babita Phogat as the panel’s sixth member. The committee delivered its report in the first week of April, but the government has yet to release its conclusions.

According to reports, the wrestlers were unable to substantiate the sexual harassment charges against the WFI chief after many hearings.

The wrestlers had previously stated that they did not want to go to court because they trusted the Prime Minister, but had warned them to go to the police if the government did not act. They expressed dissatisfaction with negotiations at the sports ministry mediated by olympian Babita Phogat, a BJP member and member of the Haryana government. Anurag Thakur spoke with the wrestlers about the charges, which he described as ‘serious.’

The Delhi Commission for Women, the state agency concerned with women’s concerns, has sent a notice to Delhi Police for neglecting to file an FIR in the case.

WFI sexual harassment case: Govt didn’t consult us before forming probe panel, say wrestlers

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The wrestlers who accused WFI president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh of sexual harassment and intimidation on Tuesday rued that the government did not consult them before forming the oversight committee that will probe charges against the sports administrator.

Sports Minister Anurag Thakur announced on Monday that a five-member oversight committee, headed by legendary boxer M C Mary Kom, will investigate the charges against the WFI boss and also manage the day-to-day affairs of the Wrestling Federation of India.

Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat, Sarita Mor and Sakshi Malik, who staged a sit-in protest at Jantar Mantar for three days demanding the sacking of the WFI president, posted identical tweet on the micro-blogging site, expressing their dismay.

“We were assured that we will be consulted before the formation of the oversight committee. It’s really sad that we were not consulted,” the wrestlers tweeted and tagged Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and Thakur.

The oversight committee has former wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt, ex-badminton player and Mission Olympic Cell member Trupti Murgunde, ex-TOPS CEO Rajagopalan and former SAI executive director – teams – Radhica Sreeman as other members.

The wrestlers had accused Singh, who is also a BJP MP, of acting like a dictator and sexually harassing junior wrestlers.

The wrestlers did not reveal the identity of the athletes who faced sexual harassment.

  • Plea withdrawn in Delhi HC against wrestlers alleging sexual harassment by WFI chief

Plea withdrawn in Delhi HC against wrestlers alleging sexual harassment by WFI chief

    [ad_1]

Delhi: Hours after a plea was moved in the Delhi High Court on Monday against the sexual assault allegations on Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh by multiple wrestlers, it was withdrawn.

Talking to IANS, Lawyer Shrikant Prasad said that Vicky, who was the petitioner, has asked us to withdraw the plea as the matter has been highlighted a lot.

The lawyer further said that the motive to file the plea was about the misuse of law by women on sexual harassment and resorting to protests and there should be some guidelines set up in this context.

In the plea, it is said that Phogat, who is also the first respondent in the plea, started blackmailing Bhushan for resigning from the post of WFI president on the pretext of protest against the sexual harassment of the wrestlers.

It is said that the media thinks of itself as Janata Adalat and has started intervening in the proceedings of the court, the plea said.

It is contended that wrestlers, instead of moving to court, have approached the media to show their concern, said the petition.

In the petition, it has been argued that respondents (wrestlers) have crossed all their limits to approach the issue and that his reputation and dignity were being tarnished.

It further claimed that sexual harassment laws were being misused and an extortion was being done on him.

This writ petition is filed against the complete misuse of sexual harassment laws by the wrestler women, the petition read.

It is in the petition that wrestlers are trying to get their own benefits out of this issue.

A huge protest by the wrestlers at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar was called off following assurances from the Centre that grievances would be addressed and Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh was asked to step aside for four weeks.

  • WFI rejects wrestlers’ sexual harassment allegations; claims ‘protest motivated’

WFI rejects wrestlers’ sexual harassment allegations; claims ‘protest motivated’

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has rejected all the allegations, including that of sexual harassment against its president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, and claimed that the wrestlers’ protest was motivated by a “hidden agenda to dislodge the current management”.

The WFI denied all the charges in its response to the government’s notice and asserted that “there is no scope for arbitrariness and mismanagement ” in the federation.

The Sports Ministry had sought an explanation from WFI after the country’s top wrestlers sat on a dharna and alleged that the federation chief sexually harassed women wrestlers and acts like a “dictator”.

The WFI sent its reply on Friday evening and, a few hours later, the wrestlers called off their protest after the government announced that it will form an oversight committee to probe the charges. It also said the WFI chief will step aside till the investigation is over.

“The WFI is managed by an elected body as per its constitution, and therefore, there is no scope for arbitrariness and mismanagement in WFI by any one individually, including the president,” the WFI said in its response to the Sports Ministry.

“The WFI, in particular, under the sitting president has always acted keeping the best interests of wrestlers in mind.

“The WFI has enhanced the image of wrestling sport nationally as well as internationally and for the record of this ministry, it is not possible without fair, supportive, clean and strict management of WFI,” it added.

The allegations were made by renowned wrestlers Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik and Ravi Dahiya.

The federation brought to the notice of the government that it has a five-member sexual harassment committee in place, chaired by its secretary general VN Prasood and which also has Sakshi as a member.

It said the charges were “motivated, biased, unfounded, untrue and false” and that the allegations were made solely with a view to harm the president, the WFI and its coaches.

“Any aggrieved person/wrestler may approach the said committee for its grievances if any, and the committee is bound to inquire as per law. However, no such complaint of any such nature as has been received from the protestors/wrestlers,” the WFI wrote.

The wrestlers, including young Anshu Malik, Sangeeta Phogat and Sonam Malik among others, started a sit-in protest at Jantar Mantar here on Wednesday and demanded the sacking of the WFI chief.

The wrestlers also demanded that the WFI be disbanded immediately and a new panel is formed, including grapplers.

The WFI listed 23 national events conducted in 2022 and claimed it “speaks of fair, supportive, clean and strict management”.

The WFI questioned the timing of the protest, and said vested interests are behind it.

“…who have evidently acted more in personal interest or under undue pressure or under any bigger conspiracy to malign and defame the present management of the WFI or president for vested interest only.

“The protesting wrestlers are accountable to explain for themselves, to the public as well as the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, particularly when mostly the protestors are seen coming together from a particulars region/state of Haryana,” the federation wrote.

“It would also be worth drawing attention that even the next election of WFI is due in near future of 2023… that the protest is not in the best interest of the wrestlers, it has some personal as well as hidden agenda to dislodge the current management of WFI.”

The letter, signed by WFI secretary general V N Prasood, also said that the federation is ready to cooperate with the government and will provide all the necessary information the ministry seeks.
