Islam, not Christianity biggest in the world

    [ad_1]

    By Dr. Javed Jamil

If you ask anybody or google which are the largest religions in the world, the answer will be Christianity followed by Islam. But the truth is that the population of Muslims believing in the fundamentals of Islam is much larger than the population of Christians believing in the basic tenets of Christianity.

Pew Centre shows 2.2 billion Christians (32% of the world’s population), 1.6 billion Muslims (23%), 1 billion Hindus (15%), nearly 500 million Buddhists (7%) and 14 million Jews (0.2%) around the world as of 2010. Obviously, these are little older figures. Wikipedia gives the following percentage of the main religions:

    ReligionAdherentsPercentage
    Christianity2.382 billion31.11
    Islam1.907 billion24.9
    Secular/Nonreligious/Agnostic/Atheist1.193 billion15.58
    Hinduism1.161 billion1

But while the number of Muslims who are firmly committed to the fundamentals of their religion (One God, Muhammad the Last Prophet, Quran the Book of God, Hereafter) has been continuously growing, the number of Christians believing in the basic tenets of Christianity (Jesus as God or Son of God, Gospel the Divine book) continues to go down with every passing day. Interestingly, while Muslims firmly believe that Jesus was born as a divine miracle from a virgin mother Mary, a large number of Christians will be found rejecting or doubting this.

According to an article, titled “ A Majority Of Americans Think Jesus Is A Great Teacher Yet” (PRNewswire), “A new survey reveals that 52 percent of American adults believe that Jesus was a great teacher and nothing more.” This is despite the fact that the Christianity in America is stronger than in Europe and Australian continents.

An article, titled ‘Christianity as default is gone’: the rise of a non-Christian Europe” by Harriet Sherwood published in Guardian says:

“Europe’s march towards a post-Christian society has been starkly illustrated by research showing a majority of young people in a dozen countries do not follow a religion. The survey of 16- to 29-year-olds found the Czech Republic is the least religious country in Europe, with 91% of that age group saying they have no religious affiliation. Between 70% and 80% of young adults in Estonia, Sweden and the Netherlands also categories themselves as non-religious.”

An article on the situation in Australia titled “Most Australian young people open to change their religious views”says:

“Australian research company McCrindle recently released a study called The Changing Faith Landscape in Australia, which shows that 46% of Australians “identify with Christianity”. Furthermore, 13% defined themselves as unaffiliated believers; 33% of respondents said they were atheists or agnostic; and 6% practiced other religions.

Regarding the age, “younger Australians are less likely to identify with Christianity than their older counterparts”. Nearly three-quarters (73%) of the oldest generation still consider themselves Christian while just 38% of the Generation Z respondents said that.”

In contrast, Muslims are showing greater commitment to their religion, and this has continued to increase. An article about Muslims in America, “Non-Belief: An Islamic Perspective – Secularism and Nonreligion” by K Sevinç · (2018) says, “The rate of those who believe in God is 94.5% and those who self identify themselves as Muslim is 97%”.

The same is true of the whole Muslim world where the overwhelming majority of Muslims (95-99%) can be easily found as having firm belief in God, Muhammad and Quran.

If only 40-50 % (even less in many parts including Europe) of the so-called Christian world does not even believe in Jesus as prescribed in Christianity, why should their numbers be still counted as above 2.3 billion. The truth is that the number of Christians by faith is not more than 1.3 billion. There is absolutely no reason to doubt that Islam is the biggest religion of the world, and its percentage is expected to continue to increase at least in the next decade.

According to The New York Times, an estimated 25% of American Muslims are converts. In Britain, around 6,000 people convert to Islam per year and, according to a June 2000 article in the British Muslims Monthly Survey, the majority of new Muslim converts in Britain were women. According to The Huffington Post, “observers estimate that as many as 20,000 Americans convert to Islam annually.”

When it comes to the reasons why Islam is growing, the Western experts try to paint it mainly the effect of their having more children. First, the conversion to Islam is definitely much more than that to any other religion. Second, if Muslim fertility rate is slightly higher, the reasons are simple. First, the family system is still strong in Muslim societies whereas it has totally disintegrated in the so-called Christian or Western world. Second, Muslims are much less likely to abort than others, as they consider it a sin. On the other hand, in America and Europe, an overwhelming majority of pregnancies end up in induced abortions. Human Rights organizations do not care of the daily genocide which is going around the world without a break, resulting in the murders of more than 70 million unborn children every year. In India, female foeticide is very common in Hindu community with the Male/Female ration dropping to less than 100/80 in many states.

Muslims need to tell the world that support to promiscuity, homosexuality and abortions in the name of “Freedom of Choice” is nothing but a support to dismantling and destroying humanity on the earth, in terms of its physical as well as moral and social meanings. If the current trend continues, a time can come sooner than later when the very survival of mankind will be in danger. Those who support and practice these practices can hardly claim to be civilized. But what else can be expected in a world, which is dominated by what I call “Economic Fundamentalism” and where the interests of life, health and peace are only secondary to the interests of the market.

But the West-dominated media will continue to give the misplaced figures because this suits them. If they are showing this it does not mean that they have any love for Christianity. It is only because they think that Christianity in name rather than in its spiritual and moral forms is no threat to their system which commercializes all those practices that are considered immoral y most religions. They fear Islam more because they feel that the concept of fundamental prohibition is more emphatic in Islam

I need to emphasize here that if Christianity is losing sheen it makes me worried. Christianity needs to be serious about why it is losing to atheist ideologies of the world.

I have been arguing for decades that the challenge for religious in today’s world does not come from one another but from the ant-religion forces that dominate the world; and the religions need to unite to face this threat rather than fighting each other.

Mandaviya unveils ‘India’s Vaccine Growth Story’ at World Book Fair

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Saturday released a book titled “India’s Vaccine Growth Story – From Cowpox to Vaccine Maitri” at the World Book Fair here at Pragati Maidan.

The book authored by Sajjan Singh Yadav, Additional Secretary, Union Finance Ministry, elaborates on India’s achievement in developing, producing and distributing Covid-19 vaccines.

Speaking on the occasion, Mandaviya said that India administered 2.2 billion doses as a part of the world’s largest Covid vaccination drive without any shortages across the nation, which resulted in saving 3.4 million lives.

The minister also highlighted that when other countries were struggling with vaccine hesitancy, India set an exemplary pro-vaccination Covid management model.

“It gives me immense pleasure to see research, manufacturing and vaccine drive has been portrayed in comprehensive fashion that recounts not just the pandemic crisis but also delves into vaccine history, that can be traced 2500 years back,” Mandaviya added.

He urged writers to come to fore, stating that “research-based documentation is a medium that can bring to light India’s heritage, illustrating to the world possibilities and solutions, as India’s Covid-19 trajectory has done, leaning on our traditional roots and heritage”.

“Our heritage reflects our knowledge and science that have stood the test of time, and proven exemplary in times of crisis,” he added.

In the book, the author has also delved upon future challenges that may emerge for vaccinology and new vistas for the growth of Indian vaccine industry in a candid manner.

World hearing day; Aging, chronic exposure to loud noises contribute to hearing loss, doctors

    [ad_1]

    Jahangeer Ganaie

Srinagar, Mar 03: Around 0.2 percent population in J&K have hearing disabilities with aging and chronic exposure to loud noises contributing to hearing loss.

Dr Saima Tabassum consultant ENT J&K health services told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that there are three main types of hearing loss including conductive, sensorineural, and mixed (both conductive and sensorineural).

The World Hearing Day is being observed for awareness about preventable hearing loss & deafness, ear health and care.

Dr Saima said that good hearing is crucial for communication, learning, and overall well-being because there is a highly-involved collaboration between ears and brains. “Our sense of hearing transmits and translates sounds of all kinds from our surroundings. So we can learn and understand,” she added.

According to the doctor, every 3rd or 4th person in each family has some sort of hearing impairment that’s why one shouldn’t ignore ear health.

Another ENT specialist from GMC told KNO that the signs and symptoms of hearing loss may include muffling of speech and other sounds, difficulty understanding words especially against background noise or in a crowd, trouble hearing consonants, frequently asking others to speak more slowly, clearly and loudly.

He said causes of hearing loss include damage to the inner ear as aging and exposure to loud noise may cause wear and tear on hairs or nerve cells in the cochlea that send sound signals to the brain.

“When these hairs or nerve cells are damaged or missing, electrical signals aren’t transmitted as efficiently, and hearing loss occurs,” he said.

Ear war can block ear canal and prevent conduction of sound waves and earwax removal can help restore your hearing.

He also said that In the outer or middle of ear, any of these issues can cause hearing loss and loud blasts of noise, sudden changes in pressure, poking your eardrum with an object and infection can cause your eardrum to rupture and affect your hearing—(KNO)

  • DAK Warns Against Excessive Use Of Earphones On World Hearing Day

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: On world hearing day, Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) on Friday warned against excessive use of earphones.

“Overuse of earphones at higher volumes over prolonged period of time can result in hearing loss,” said DAK President Dr Nisar ul Hassan.

Dr Hassan said the younger generation is particularly vulnerable because they are glued to their personal listening devices like earphones, headphones and earbuds.

They plug these devices into their smartphones and listen to many hours at volumes exceeding the safe limit.

“Young people often choose volumes as high as 105 decibels,” he said

“The safe sound levels are around 85 decibels for adults and 75 decibels for children.”

The DAK President said more people are coming with hearing issues due to the overuse of earphones and headphones.

“Today’s earphone users are going to be tomorrow’s hearing aid users,” he said.

“According to a study published in the Journal BMJ Global Health, one billion young people are potentially at risk of hearing loss due to their excessive use of headphones and earbuds.”

Dr Nisar said hearing is the sense that connects us to the people.

Taking care of our hearing is key to maintaining healthy relationship(s) and general health and well-being.

He said there is an urgent need to prioritize safe listening practices to safeguard aural health

It is always preferable to avoid earphones, but those who need them should take precautions.

“Limit the usage time, keep the volume low and take breaks,” he said

“Every year on March 3, world hearing day is observed to raise awareness on ways of preventing deafness and promoting aural care through safe listening,” he added.

  • Christian stall at Delhi World book fair vandalised by right-wing goons

Christian stall at Delhi World book fair vandalised by right-wing goons

    [ad_1]

Chaos erupted when a group of right-wing workers vandalised a stall containing Christian spiritual books at the New Delhi World Book Fair held in Pragati Maidan on March 1.

A video has emerged on social media Twitter where around 30 men wearing saffron scarves and tilak on their forehead can be seen tearing posters of the New Testament Psalms and Proverbs.

Alleging that Christians target poor Hindu families for religious conversions, they tore copies of The Holy Bible and shouted, “Free Bible bandh karo, dharam parivartan bandh karo” (Stop distributing free copies of the Bible, stop religious conversion) ‘Jai Shree Ram’ and ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’.

The book fair had several stalls of different genres including different spiritual and religious books. The vandalised counter had put a tag for free Holy Bible, which triggered a few Hindutva men.

According to Indian Express, one of the volunteers said other stalls also distributed free texts from other religions.

“The men accused us of converting people by forcing them to take the books. We told them that we were only distributing free books to passersby. But they didn’t listen,” the volunteer was quoted by the Indian Express.

Mahindri Panchandham, a self-proclaimed member of Unite Hindu, led the vandalism. In the video, when some people from the crowd try to remind him that the Indian Constitution describes the country as a democratic nation where one is free to follow under their free will, Panchandham shot back saying, “Democracy gives the right to preach religion but not to lure poor Hindus and convert them.”

As people try to calm an agitated Panchandham down and reason with him, he refuses to listen and starts raising slogans in a louder tone.

Meanwhile, the Delhi Police informed that no complaint was registered by the members of the book fair.

“We check the area and found that no books were torn. The group had only protested and was soon removed. There was no disruption or violence. The Gideons don’t wish to file a complaint and said the matter was sorted,” said a police officer.

Vishwa Hindu Parishad spokesperson Vinod Bansal said that Christian groups and missionaries are infamous for targeting poor Hindu families and tricking them into converting to Christianity. “These groups and missionaries convert people by forcing them to take books. We don’t support this and asked them not to do the same. There was no violence or anything,” he said.

  • Cindy McCain tapped as head of World Food Program

Cindy McCain tapped as head of World Food Program

    [ad_1]

    arizona governor inauguration 05667

The media outlet Devex first reported McCain was set to be tapped for the role.

While McCain has participated in decades of humanitarian work, her appointment last year as U.S. ambassador to three U.N. food and agriculture agencies marked her first formal role in food policy. In that post, which is based in Rome, she has been part of a small cadre of U.S. diplomats working to limit the damage from Russia’s war in Ukraine, which has sent global food prices sky-rocketing and threatened to destabilize dozens of fragile countries already on the brink of widespread hunger. McCain described her initial months in the job as “a baptism by fire,” in an interview with POLITICO last year.

McCain said in an interview with POLITICO last month that she saw “room for improvement from the Middle East” in contributing to global food aid amid the fast-moving crisis. Asked about China’s role in global food security and U.S. criticism of Beijing for not doing more, McCain urged the Chinese government to be engaged. But she added, “There’s always strings attached with China.”

McCain will replace David Beasley, the World Food Program’s current executive director and the former Republican governor of South Carolina. People close to Beasley say he would likely consider pursuing a Senate bid in his home state, should Sen. Tim Scott (R) run for president in 2024 or Sen. Lindsey Graham (R) retire in the next few years.

McCain met Wednesday with Beasley and top United Nations food program officials, including Qu Dongyu, the director general of the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization.

A person close to McCain had described the prospect of leading the World Food Program as a “role of a lifetime” for her.

  • China urges US to stop trying to mislead the world on Taiwan

China urges US to stop trying to mislead the world on Taiwan

    [ad_1]

Beijing: The Taiwan question is purely China’s internal affair. It is time for the US to stop walking on the edge, stop using the salami tactics, stop pushing the envelope, and stop sowing confusion and trying to mislead the world on Taiwan, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday.

If the US refuses to change course and goes down that wrong path, there will be real consequences and it will come at real costs to the US, Spokesperson Mao Ning made the comment in response to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s recent ‘erroneous’ remarks on Taiwan.

“Secretary Blinken’s remarks are absolutely irresponsible and absurd. China firmly opposes that,” Mao said, adding that it seems that some history lessons are in order for the top US diplomat on the Taiwan question, Xinhua news agency reported.

“Taiwan is an inalienable part of China. The one-China principle is a universally recognised basic norm in international relations and the important political prerequisite and foundation for China’s diplomatic relations with countries in the world,” the Spokesperson stressed.

In 1972, the US stated in the Shanghai Communique that “The US acknowledges that all Chinese on either side of the Taiwan Strait maintain there is but one China and that Taiwan is a part of China. The US government does not challenge that position,” Mao said.

In 1978, the US stated in the Joint Communique on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between the US and China that “The US recognises the Government of theRepublic of China as the sole legal government of China. The US government acknowledges the Chinese position that there is but one China and Taiwan is part of China,” he added.

She also mentioned in 1982, the US stated in the August 17 Communique that “the US recognised the Government of the People’s Republic of China as the sole legal Government of China, and it acknowledged the Chinese position that there is but one China and Taiwan is part of China. The US government…reiterates that it has no intention of infringing on Chinese sovereignty and territorial integrity, or interfering in China’s internal affairs, or pursuing a policy of ‘two Chinas’ or ‘one China, one Taiwan’.”

“For some time, the US made those political commitments to China on the Taiwan question, which are written down in black and white,” the Spokesperson said.

The US has been deliberately ignoring and twisting the history and sending the wrong message on the Taiwan question. The US has significantly relaxed its restraint on official interactions and reinforced military contact with Taiwan and touted “Ukraine today, Taiwan tomorrow.” It has even been revealed by the media that the US government has a plan for “the destruction of Taiwan,” Mao said.

“We cannot help but ask what exactly is the US trying to achieve?”

The Taiwan question is purely China’s internal affair. It is at the very core of China’s core interests. It is the political foundation of China-US relations, and the first red line that must not be crossed in this relationship. China will never allow any external force to interfere in our internal affairs, Mao added.

“We have a clear message for the US: It is time to stop — stop walking on the edge, stop using the salami tactics, stop pushing the envelope, and stop sowing confusion and trying to mislead the world on Taiwan,” she said.
