European lawyers challenged the ban on providing services to companies from Russia

European lawyers challenged in the Court of Justice of the European Union (EU) a ban on providing legal services to companies from Russia. This follows from a document published on Monday in the Official Journal of the EU. Data leads RIA News.

A lawsuit against the Council of the European Union was filed by the Association of French Bar Unions ACE-Avocats. It says that such measures are contrary to the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, as well as some decisions of the EU Court of Justice, confirming that lawyers should be able to carry out their work without hindrance.

On October 6 last year, as part of another package of sanctions, the EU Council imposed a ban on the provision of legal services to the Russian government, as well as companies registered in Russia. However, exceptions are allowed, which must be approved by the authorities of a particular EU country.

Earlier, the EU disclosed the amount of frozen Russian assets: 21.5 billion euros – they belonged to organizations and individuals from Russia. This was announced by the European Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders.

Akshay Kumar takes onus of his films not working, says it’s 100% his fault

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar, who had a string of flops with his recent film ‘Selfiee’ being another addition, said that the films not working at the box-office are solely his fault and one must not blame the audience for not liking a particular film.

As per media reports, the actor said that he has faced the similar issue early during his career when his 16 films tanked at the box-office in a row.

He said: “This is not happening to me for the first time. In my career, I have had 16 consecutive flops at a time. There was a time when I had eight films in a row that did not work. Now, I have had three-four films in a row that did not work. The thing is that it happens due to your own fault, film ka na chalna (a film not working). The audience has changed, you need to change, you need to dismantle yourself. You have to start again because the audience requires you to see something else.”

Akshay said: “It is a great alarm, aapki film nahi chal rahi to galti aapki hai (If your films are not working, it is your fault). When your films flop in a row, it is an alarm for you that it is time for you to change. Main koshish kar raha hun, wahi kar sakta hoon (I am trying to change, that is all I can do).”

He also said that he’d like to tell everyone that when films don’t work, the audience must not be blamed.

“Do not blame the audience or anyone else. It is my fault, 100 per cent. Aapki film na chalna is not because of the audience (a film not working is your fault only). It is because of what you selected. Maybe you have not given the right ingredients in the film,” he added.

Column | Many would already have the right to shorten their working hours, but few do

    [ad_1]

Money is the main reason why parents of young children rarely work part-time, but it is not the only reason.

in Britain a four-day work week was tried, and it yielded good results. Productivity increased, and employees feel better than before.

In Finland, the news was received as expected: employers’ representatives were shocked, left-wing politicians praised. In the end, everyone said that it wouldn’t work like this for us, but maybe we could try something.

Bridge times I read the reactions of politicians and experts more closely than usual, because I myself work a four-day work week. Reducing working hours is a legal right of parents until the child finishes second grade.

However, I am obviously lucky that my job allows me to do this. Few parents seize the opportunity, even though a four-day week could improve the well-being of those living in their peak years.

Of those who exercise their right, the overwhelming majority are women. The current government brought about a family leave reform, but it did nothing for care leavers.

From now on, mothers of children under the age of three will rather take a leave of absence from work altogether than return to work and work shorter working hours.

Supporters of the change push for a four-day week for people other than parents of small children and with full pay.

Monetary however, it is not the only reason why the opportunity is not being used now. Of course, that is an important reason.

Coil in 2021, paid an average of 189.57 euros per month for parents of children under the age of three, and an average of 99.68 euros per month for parents of first- and second-graders. Everyone can calculate how much their own salary would decrease due to shorter working hours and how Kela’s support would relate to that.

Many employers are not more flexible than they have to be.

Made by Kela years ago statement according to this, the users of the support are more educated than average and have better incomes.

Indeed, they often wrestle with problems other than money. I know mothers who do their expert work at night, because the employer requires 100% work input with 80% working time and salary. Many have the experience that career and salary development freezes due to reduced working hours.

With this attitude in many workplaces, it’s no surprise that employers’ representatives immediately slammed the UK results. Many employers are not ready to be more flexible than is legally required.

In this regard, too, we can envy Sweden, where part-time work for both parents is the norm rather than the exception in workplaces.

Congress empty, KCR working to build coalition to take on BJP: Kavitha

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader Kalvakuntla Kavitha on Saturday said her father, Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao was working to put together a strong front of regional parties to take on the BJP.

Her party has good relations with Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray and NCP supremo Sharad Pawar, she said, speaking to reporters here.

“There is only one front, BJP, in the country. The Congress is empty. There is no front or tent (of opposition). We have good relations with Uddhav Thackeray and Sharad Pawar. KCR (Rao) is working to build a strong alternative of regional parties and that will be the alternative front,” the Telangana legislator said.

Maharashtra and Telangana have a close bond as the two states share a border of more than 1,000 km and Vidarbha (eastern Maharashtra) is inspired by KCR’s leadership, she said.

“Our agenda is people-oriented development. We are looking for a progressive partner like Maharashtra. The state’s icons are inspirational. We work for time-bound development,” she said.

  • SC refuses to entertain PIL seeking menstrual pain leave for female students, working women

SC refuses to entertain PIL seeking menstrual pain leave for female students, working women

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Supreme Court Friday refused to entertain a PIL seeking a direction to all the states to frame rules for menstrual pain leave for female students and working women at their respective workplaces, observing that the issue falls under the policy domain of the government,

A bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud disposed of the petition and granted liberty to the PIL petitioner to approach the Union Ministry of Women and Child Development with a representation seeking a policy decision on the issue.

“This is a policy matter so we are not dealing with this…Having regard to the policy views, it would be appropriate if the petitioner approaches the Union Ministry of Women and Child Development. The petition is accordingly disposed of,” said the bench which also comprised justices P S Narasimha and J B Pardiwala.

During the brief hearing, the bench took note of the submissions of a law student, opposing the PIL, that if employers are compelled to grant menstrual pain leaves to women employees every month then it may dis-incentivise them from hiring them.

The court, however, said though the plea had raised some important points, but the issue being a policy related, it cannot entertain this.

The petition, filed by Delhi resident Shailendra Mani Tripathi through lawyer Vishal Tiwari, had sought a direction to the Centre and all the states for compliance of section 14 of the Maternity Benefit Act, 1961.

Section 14 of the Act deals with appointment of inspectors and says appropriate governments may appoint such officers and may define the local limits of jurisdiction within which they shall exercise their functions under this law.

Earlier on February 15, the top court had agreed to hear the PIL.

The plea had said countries like the United Kingdom, China, Wales, Japan, Taiwan, Indonesia, South Korea, Spain and Zambia are already providing menstrual pain leave in one form or the other.

It had said only women are empowered to propagate the human race with their special ability of creation and during different stages of maternity, she undergoes a number of physical and mental hardships, be it menstruation, pregnancy, miscarriage or any other related medical complications.

The had plea said the 1961 Act makes provisions for almost all the problems faced by women that can be understood by several of its provisions which have made it mandatory for employers to grant paid leave to women employees for certain number of days during pregnancy, in case of miscarriage, for tubectomy operation and also in cases of medical complications arising out of these stages of maternity.

“Ironically, the most disappointing aspect in the direction of respecting the rights of working women, is that in spite of a provision under section 14 of the Maternity Benefit Act, 1961, that there will be an inspector for a particular area to monitor the implementation of such great provisions, no government in India has created the post of inspectors, forget about the appointment of such inspectors,” the plea had claimed.

It had said the provisions of law under the 1961 Act are one of the “greatest steps” taken by Parliament to recognise and respect motherhood and maternity of working women.

“Definitely even today also, in several organisations, including government organisations, these provisions are not being implemented in their true spirit and with the same legislative intent with which it was enacted but at the same time one of the biggest aspects of this whole issue or one of the very basic problems related to maternity which are faced by every woman has been completely ignored by the legislature in this very good law and also by the executive while making rules, specifically the leave rules,” the petition had said.

It said the central civil services (CCS) leave rules have made provisions like child care leave for women for a period of 730 days during her entire service period to take care of her first two children till they attain the age of 18 years.

The plea had said this rule has also given 15 days of paternity leave to male employees to take care of a child which is another great step of a welfare state in recognising the rights and problems of working women.

“In spite of making all the above mentioned provisions in law to take care of women in difficult stages of her maternity, the very first stage of the maternity, the menstrual period, has been knowingly or unknowingly ignored by society, the legislature and other stakeholders in society except few organisations and state governments,” it had alleged.

The plea had said Bihar is the only state which has been providing two days of special menstrual pain leave to women since 1992.

It said there are some Indian companies that offer paid period leaves which include Zomato, Byju’s and Swiggy.

Free bus rides for working women, schoolchildren from April 1 in poll-bound Karnataka

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Working women and schoolchildren will get free rides in public buses from April 1, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said here on Tuesday.

Speaking after dedicating KSRTC’s Volvo Multi Axel BS4-9600 sleeper buses ahead of the polls here, he said the purpose of chalking out this scheme was to enable women become self-reliant.

They need to introduce mini school buses and the existing buses will be utilised to start the operation. At the time of starting schools, a minimum of five buses must be operated in each taluk. More grants will be released, if necessary, he said.

“Transport plays an important role in economic development because of this it has been given priority and announced free pass facility for working women and school children in the state budget FY 2023-24. “Our government is always with the working staff and the management and let us provide a good service to the commuters,” he stated.

A special transport team called ‘Ambari’ was dedicated to the state earlier in the day which has the sleeper facility, the CM said. Several good features are provided in this fleet of buses just like the railway sleeper coaches.

The earlier edition of Volvo buses was not comfortable and understanding this the multi-axel buses have been designed to provide good facilities to the commuters. Henceforth, the night journey on these buses will be comfortable. The state transport corporation should buy some more buses, he said.

Two Naxalites working in Hyderabad nabbed by Gadchiroli police

    [ad_1]

Gadchiroli: Two Naxalites with a cumulative reward of Rs 10 lakh on their heads were held by Gadchiroli police on Monday while working in a security firm and car showroom in Hyderabad in Telangana after being on the run since 2006, an official said.

Thuge alias Madhukar Chinanna Kodape (42) was recruited as a member in the outlawed outfit’s ‘Aheri LOS’ in 2002 and later worked in various teams based in Jimalgatta and Sironcha, from where he absconded in 2006, a police release said.

“He is an accused in nine murder cases, eight encounters, two dacoities, four related to arson and one attempt to murder. He has a reward of Rs 8 lakh on his head,” an official said.

Woman Naxalite Shamala alias Jamani Mangalu Punam (35), a resident of Bijapur in Chhattisgarh, who was working as a member in Aheri LOS, was also nabbed.

“She is an accused in one murder case, five encounters, one each related to dacoity and arson. She was carrying a reward of Rs 2 lakh on her head. They may be husband and wife and were moving between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh since 2006 to avoid arrest,” he said.

Thuge was held from Hyderabad, where he was working as watchman in a local security firm, while Shamala was working in the housekeeping department of a car showroom.

“They were held on February after being tracked for nearly one year. The action was taken under the guidance of Superintendent of Police Neelotpal, who asked Naxalites to shun violence and join the mainstream,” he added.

Seth Meyers on Republicans: ‘No interest in improving the lives of working people’

    [ad_1]

    Seth Meyers

On Wednesday evening, Seth Meyers tore into the Republican party’s refusal to deal seriously with the toxic chemical train derailment in Ohio. “They claim they’re the party of the working class, but they don’t actually have ideas for or interest in improving the lives of working class people,” the Late Night host said. “And you can see that in the GOP’s reaction to the catastrophic train derailment and ensuing environmental disaster in Ohio.”

To recap: two weeks ago, a train carrying hazardous material including vinyl chloride derailed near the town of East Palestine, Ohio, releasing a mushroom cloud of toxic chemicals. In the days since, residents have reported respiratory issues and burning eyes, as well as widespread wildlife death. “Of course, when Republicans see a plume of gray smoke, their first thought is, ‘Dear god, did someone open Hunter Biden’s laptop?’” Meyers joked.

In 2018, the Trump administration rolled back a train-braking rule aimed to prevent disasters such as the derailment in Ohio. “I mean, of fucking course he did,” said Meyers. “And I’m sure we didn’t hear about it because it was the same day he tried to buy Greenland or challenged Angela Merkel to a putting contest or drank water weird.”

Meyers then turned to Ohio senator and Trump acolyte JD Vance, who said in an appearance on Fox News that Democrats were “unserious people” in their handling of the disaster. “I’m sorry, you think Democrats are unserious people worried about fake problems?” Meyers laughed. “On that exact same network a day later, a lady in your party said whales are getting killed by windmills.”

The East Palestine environmental disaster is the “perfect example of the kind of thing a serious governing party should have answers for,” Meyers concluded. “It’s absolutely true that Democrats can and should do more. Meanwhile, Republicans are talking about culture war BS.”

    Stephen Colbert

On the Late Show, Stephen Colbert continued to speculate about alien contact after the US military shot down three unidentified flying objects in as many days. And on Monday, the US set up a new task force on UFOs.

Interesting coincidence, Colbert noted: “That’s like your flight attendant saying, ‘Uh, attention passengers, everyone in the cockpit is totally fine and conscious. Totally unrelated, we are setting up a task force on how to land a plane.’”

US senators were given a classified briefing on Tuesday, which John Kennedy, a Republican from Louisiana, summed up as: “The only thing I feel confident in saying right now is that if you’re confused, you understand the situation perfectly.”

“Then I’m all caught up,” Colbert deadpanned.

Kennedy also said the UFOs have been “going on for a long, long, long time”, since at least 2017. “Do you know what that means? The aliens were singing Despacito,” Colbert joked.

It is possible, he added, that the UFOs could be sky trash detected with new sensitivity on radar settings; the White House said there are “hundreds, if not thousands”, of trash objects in the sky, including used car lot balloons. “So not only did our Air Force get a direct hit, they also got an incredible deal on a pre-owned Buick Regal,” Colbert joked.

    Jimmy Kimmel

In Los Angeles, Jimmy Kimmel reacted to news that researchers are closing in on a male birth control pill, with a pill that will stop sperm from swimming for an hour. The drug has been tested in mice, “and after ingesting it, none of the mice got any women pregnant, so that’s good”, he joked.

“They say their ultimate plan is to crush the pills up, put them into a tranquilizer dart, and hide in a tree outside Nick Cannon’s house,” he added.

Kimmel also touched on the Unidentified Aerial Phenomena, which the US military said earlier this week are not aliens or Chinese spy balloons. “The best guess right now is that there were some overly aggressive Re/Max agents on the loose,” said Kimmel, referring to the real estate company with a hot air balloon logo.

“It’s cute that we brief senators on this story,” he added, “as if we found out that the aliens were invading, Joe Manchin would know what to do.”

    The Daily Show

And on the Daily Show, guest host Sarah Silverman mocked Elon Mock, the Twitter CEO and “man who has definitely scissored a robot”.

“If you felt that your Twitter feed was especially flooded with Elon’s tweets this week, you weren’t alone,” she explained. “Apparently Elon’s tweets weren’t going viral enough, so he pressured his engineers to design a special algorithm just for him” which would push his tweets above others to all users.

“Because it behooves all of us to be privy to the fresh and original insights of the richest man in the world,” she deadpanned.

“Really though, this is just the most pathetic thing I’ve ever heard,” she continued. “I don’t understand how someone can have 15 kids and still be an incel.” She even felt bad for him – “this man paid $44bn to get the same insecurities that I have for free.”
