Rahul disqualification: Youth Congress workers block Delhi-Jaipur Highway, burn tyres

    [ad_1]

Gurugram: Many Youth Congress workers on Saturday blocked the Delhi-Jaipur Highway here and burnt tyres in protest against the disqualification of party leader Rahul Gandhi from the Lok Sabha.

The party workers led by Haryana Youth Congress chief Divyanshu Budhiraja reached near Kherki Daula toll plaza at around 12:30 pm and raised slogans against the BJP government.

“The Centre has cancelled the membership of Rahul Gandhi to suppress the voice of the Opposition. We will protest on the streets against the dictatorial decision of the BJP government which is scared of the support received by Gandhi-led ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’,” Budhiraja said.

The Gurugram police reached the protest site and detained one of the protesters.

“Vikas Parmar alias Lala, a resident of Rohtak, was detained. He was released later,” a police officer said.

Following the complaint of ASI Yogender Kumar, an FIR was registered against about 20 protesters under sections 147 (riots), 283 (obstruction in public way), 341 (wrongful confinement) of the IPC at the Kherki Daula police station, he said.

“A case was registered on Saturday against those who blocked the Delhi-Jaipur Highway. One of them was arrested while action will be taken against others,” Inspector Rajender Kumar, SHO, Kherki Daula police station said.

Gandhi was disqualified from the Lok Sabha on Friday, a day after a court in Gujarat’s Surat convicted him in a 2019 defamation case. The disqualification will bar Gandhi (52), a four-time MP, from contesting polls for eight years unless a higher court stays his conviction.

Meanwhile, former BJP MP Sudha Yadav accused the Gandhi scion of making unwarranted comments on Prime Minister Narendra Modi during several occasions on both national and international platforms.

“The conduct of Rahul Ganbdhi in this case simply shows his arrogance. He has made unwarranted remarks against the prime minister in national and global fora,” she said at a press conference here.

Countering the charges, Congress leader Captain Ajay Yadav claimed it was the
pre-plan of the saffron party and that the Union dispensation “cannot face the truth” as shown by Gandhi.

  • Hindutva workers booked for rioting, vandalism in Aurangabad post Chavhanke’s speech

Hindutva workers booked for rioting, vandalism in Aurangabad post Chavhanke’s speech

    [ad_1]

Members of a right-wing group, Hindu Jan Garjana Morcha, attacked a women’s public washroom, among other acts of violence, on Sunday afternoon in an attempt to remove the name ‘Aurangabad’ from its board.

In videos that surfaced and have now gone viral on social media, the group can be seen violently attacking the board over the public toilet for women, to break the portion that reads “Aurangabad Mahanagar Palika, Aurangabad (Aurangabad Municipal Corporation, Aurangabad).

Aurangabad was recently renamed Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar after Shivaji, in an attempt to erase the roots of the Muslim emperor Aurangzeb, often termed a tyrant by Hindu extremists.

A few right-wingers climbed over the slab of the toilet and hit the nameplate with bricks and hammers amid cheers, slogans and whistles from supporters.

The incident took place during a march organised by the Sakal Hindu Ekatrikaran Samiti in support of the decision to support the remaining of the city. The rally took place despite the police denying permission for the event.

According to the details of this incident, Hindu Jan Garjana Morcha members first pelted stones on the name board of the women’s toilet. On information, the police reached the spot following which the stone-pelting gang fled the scene, after this incident, the police increased security in the city.

The march commenced from Kranti Chowk and reached I.M. from Adalat Road Hall, in front of Vivekanand College reached Aurangpura from Niral Bazar through Samthargarh.

The rally also witnessed speeches by the editor-in-chief of Sudarshan News Suresh Chavhanke and suspended Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA T Raja Singh.

Controversial leaders Chavhanke and Singh delivered communally charged speeches at the event that was attended by Maharashtra cabinet ministers employment guarantee scheme and horticulture minister Sandipan Bhumare and cooperative minister Atul Save alongside Shiv Sena MLA Pradeep Jaiswal and BJP MLA Shivendra Raje Bhosale were present.

Members of the Navnriman Sena, ISKCON, Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal among others were also present.

In his communally charged speech, Chavhanke used derogatory terms to address Muslims whilst slamming Aurangzeb.

“There is no body of Arungzeb in his grave, Marahatas have done with him what America did with Osama bin Laden,” claimed Chavhanke challenging history writers to dig up his grave.

Garnering applause, Suresh Chavkanke expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Maharashtra chief minister Eknath Shinde, and Deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis for changing the name of the city, while taking an oath that Hindus will ensure that the name remains till the end of time.

“The name Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar has just been introduced for the city but it is now on us to change the entire image of this city.”

Now, all Hindus must ensure that we refrain to buy from shops that have Aurangabad on their nameplates. “We will economically boycott the ‘children of Aurangzeb’,” he said reiterating the economic boycott of Muslims traders.

The concussion of the event, where Chavhanke, delivered this speech witnessed the violence. Members of Sakal Hindu Ekatikaran Samhitihi went on a rampage and vandalized boards of several shops and posters that read Aurangabad instead of Sambhajinagar.

Following the incident, the Police Commissioner directed patrolling of the city until those participating in the march dispersed.

Seven FIRs including those for rioting and damage to public property have been registered against several suspects were registered.

According to the Times of India, among the seven, an FIR against Raja Singh and Chavhanke, who have been previously booked for hate speeches, has been registered under section 153 (A), for creating enmity between different groups of religions, race place, etc, of the Indian Penal Code (IPC),

Four FIRs have been filed at Kranti Chowk police station, while each is at Osanpura Vedantnagar ad MIDC Cidco police stations.

Police stated that as a result of communal speeches delivered at the event, some people from the crowd, on their way back home went on a rampage and started tearing off the banners, and flexes and bringing down nameplates bearing Aurangabad on them.

However, when Siasat.com attempted to reach out to the police in the case, they refused to comment or release any information.

  • 11 sanitation workers died in Gujarat in 2 yrs while cleaning sewers: Govt to Assembly

11 sanitation workers died in Gujarat in 2 yrs while cleaning sewers: Govt to Assembly

    [ad_1]

Gandhinagar: The Gujarat government on Thursday informed the Legislative Assembly that eleven sanitation workers have died of asphyxiation while cleaning drains in different parts of the state during the last two years.

While seven of them, who entered into blocked sewer lines to clean them, died between January 2021 and January 2022, four sanitation workers lost their lives between January 2022 and January 2023, Gujarat Social and Justice and Empowerment Minister Bhanuben Babariya said during Question Hour in the Assembly which is having its budget session.

She was responding to a question raised by Congress MLA Imran Khedawala, who sought to know the status of compensation to be paid to the kin of the deceased.

Babariya told the House the government has already paid Rs 10 lakh as compensation to the kin of each of the 11 sanitation workers who died of asphyxiation.

When senior Congress MLA Shailesh Parmar sought to know whether the state government gives jobs to the kin of deceased conservancy workers as per guidelines of the Supreme Court, the minister said the issue was under consideration.

All urban local bodies as well as panchayats have been directed by the government to strictly follow the provisions of the ‘Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act, 2013’, she said.

“Despite our best efforts to see that no worker is asked to go inside sewer lines and all guidelines are strictly followed, some private contractors hire workers from other states and ask them to enter into drains, which leads to tragedy. Even if a worker belongs to another state, we pay compensation to the kin (in case of death),” she said.

The minister further said the government has already set up an organisation, Gujarat Safai Kamdar Development Corporation (GSKDC), for upliftment and rehabilitation of sanitation workers.

The corporation provides cheap loans as well as subsidies on such loans so that sanitation workers can take up some other work or start business. It also provides financial assistance up to Rs 50,000 to private sanitation workers to buy safety equipment, said Babariya.

To prevent any untoward incident while cleaning sewers, sanitation workers of municipal corporations, municipalities and panchayats are given different types of safety equipment, such as jetting machine, suction instrument, hydraulic trolley, drainage cleaning device, breathing masks, full body suits and gas detection gadget, she added.

  • Stalin takes veiled swipe at BJP over fake news on migrant workers

Stalin takes veiled swipe at BJP over fake news on migrant workers

    [ad_1]

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Tuesday took a veiled swipe at the BJP by saying that ‘some political forces’ utilise technology for spreading rumours and cause deterioration of law and order.

In his address, inaugurating the 50th edition of ‘Bridge (Building human capital for a trillion dollar digital economy)’ conference, an initiative of the ICT Academy Stalin said all steps are being taken by the State government to take Tamil Nadu to the numero uno spot in the country in Information Technology sector.

Technology has two sides to it and the objective for which it is used decides its usefulness. “The younger generation should use technology for their growth and must not become its slaves. Crimes, involving use of technology for duping people are more,” he said. “Some political forces utilise it for spreading rumours and spoil law and order,” he said without naming anyone.

Recently, fake information was spread in social media that migrant workers were attacked in Tamil Nadu leading to unrest among labour force belonging to States including Bihar. The government had to reach out to workers to calm them that the claims were false and cases were registered by police including one against a Hindi daily and a BJP spokesperson as well.

The CM further said, “obscene websites are also on the rise and human lives are becoming fatalities in online card game Rummy.” Hence, the youth should grow in thier lives by using technology in the right manner and work for the nation’s development.

The Raj Bhavan had on Wednesday returned a Bill banning online Rummy to the Tamil Nadu Assembly for reconsideration.

Stalin said Tamil Nadu is a pioneer in successfully implementing National e-Governance Plan and State government e-Governance initiatives.

Underscoring various government initiatives during 1996-2001, when late DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi was the Chief Minister, including coming up with a IT policy in 1997, he said such pioneering initiatives is behind the achievements the State has made in the field.

His government, working on the social justice-led Dravidian model of governance is continuing such work.

Due to such efforts including e-office, people could soon avail ‘paperless, transparent services.’ Data is the new digital era fuel and TN government has unveiled its Data centre policy fulfilling the first objective of facilitating building of related infrastructure. To address ‘skills gap,’ the government has ensured appropriate learning modules for 50,000 IT/computer students.

The Information Technology sector should grow and it should be nurtured to see that in Tamil Nadu it is developed better than other States in the country.

According to the ICT Academy, the Bridge conference aims at bridging the industry academia gap.

“Bridge is a platform for all the stakeholders to discuss improving the industry-institute interaction primarily on the key issues that includes the role of technology, innovation, applied research, entrepreneurship, future virtual world, curriculum change, industry expectations, skill development etc.”

It is an opportunity for both industrialists and academicians to share their thoughts, ideas and ways for preparing academic campuses to “deliver high value industry relevant output.”

Ministers including T Mano Thangaraj (IT), J Jeyaranjan, Vice-chairman, State Planning Commission, top officials, technologists, Hari Balachandran, CEO of ICT Academy of TN participated.

  • TN: Coimbatore tense after arrest of Hindu Munnani workers

TN: Coimbatore tense after arrest of Hindu Munnani workers

    [ad_1]

Chennai: Tension continued to grip Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore city on Tuesday after the arrest of two Hindu Munnani workers.

The two were arrested on Monday, along with as many others, for allegedly assaulting migrant workers from West Bengal employed in a gold smithery unit.

Surya Prakash,19, and Prakash,23, are active workers of Hindu Munnani and they had picked up a quarrel with Gowtham Siyamel Kattuvam, 39, a native of West Bengal and two of his friends working in Coimbatore.

Two others, Pragadeesh and Velmurugan who were also arrested with the Hindu Munnani activists are college students.

According to Variety Hall police which arrested the accused, the four entered into a quarrel with Govind and two of his other accomplices and later assaulted the migrant workers.

The migrant workers then left the scene and reached their accommodation when two other of their colleagues narrated the assault by the four.

According to police, a case was lodged by the migrant workers at Variety Hall Police station and this led to the arrest of the four people, including two Hindu Munnani activists, on Monday.

Coimbatore is a sensitive area and the arrest of Hindu Munnani activists has upped the ante by the police. Coimbatore police have ordered a strong police contingent to be put in charge to maintain the law and order in the area.

The serial bomb blasts in February 1998 in Coimbatore had left 58 people dead and more than 200 injured. The blasts were carried out by the Islamist organisation Al Umma whose leader SA Basha is still languishing in jail.

This has left Coimbatore a highly sensitive city where police have always been on an alert with stepped-up security.

It may also be noted that the car blast in Ukkadam near the Sangameshwara temple on October 21, 2022, on the eve of Deepavali had left a 29-year-old youth, Jameesha Mubin, charred to death.

On inquiry, police found that it was a botched-up attempt for a massive killing near the temple but the car blasted before reaching a crowded place thus charring the main conspirator, Jameesha Mubin to death.

The police have always been on alert after the February 14, 1998 blasts in Coimbatore, and the arrest of two Hindu Munnani activists has now led to further beefing up of security.

Prashant Kishor thanks Stalin for arresting TN leader threatening migrant workers

    [ad_1]

Patna: Bihar-based political strategist Prashant Kishor (PK) on Monday thanked Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin for arresting Tamil leader Senthamijhan Shiman, who allegedly gave a provocative speech against Bihari labourers in the state.

PK had tweeted Shiman’s video and demanded that the Tamil Nadu government act against him.

After the arrest, Kishor said “Thankyou Sir” to Stalin.

The Bihar and Tamil Nadu Police on March 10 claimed that all videos, purportedly showing assault on migrant labourers in Tamil Nadu, uploaded on social media are fake. Bihar Police registered two FIRs in this matter while 13 FIRs registered in Tamil Nadu for uploading fake videos.

Following the claims of the police of the two states, Kishor, on March 11, challenged them to register FIR against him as he had uploaded two videos related to a Tamil Nadu incident where local people are beating Bihari labourers.

He said that while some people had uploaded fake videos to provoke Tamil youths to beat Bihari labourers but that does not mean violent incidents are not taking place against Hindi speaking people in Tamil Nadu. “I have uploaded two videos where Hindi speaking people were beaten by local Tamil youths. One such incident had happened in the train in Kongu district and Tamil Nadu police registered an FIR against it. In another video, a leader was addressing a gathering and giving an ultimatum to Bihari people to leave Tamil Nadu in 7 days. I challenge Bihar and Tamilnadu police to declare my two videos fake and register an FIR against me,” he said on March 11 during the 161th day of his padyatra in Maharajganj of Siwan district.

California court lets gig companies keep treating workers as contractors

    [ad_1]

But the ruling could still hand a significant victory to unions and worker advocates. It invalidated a provision of Prop 22 that sets a high bar for the Legislature to pass laws allowing workers to organize.

“We are grateful that the California Court of Appeal has affirmed that companies like Uber, Lyft, Doordash and Instacart can’t keep drivers from joining together in a union through their deceptive ballot measure,” plaintiff and driver Mike Robinson said in a statement.

The legal battle has extended a long-running fight over the status of gig workers in California. In 2019, the state passed a law that made effectively compelled companies to classify their workers as employees, not contractors, by enshrining a California Supreme Court Decision.

After failing to block the law in Sacramento, tech companies fought back at the ballot box by pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into passing Prop 22. A labor-backed coalition then challenged the law as unconstitutional.
