Tarigami Leads Protest For Minimum Wages, Worker Regularisation

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami, a leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), took to the streets on Monday in Jammu and Kashmir’s summer capital to lead a protest on the occasion of International Labour Day. Tarigami’s demonstration called for the implementation of the Minimum Wages Act in its true spirit while also demanding the abolition of the contractual system of employment.

According to Tarigami, workers employed on a contractual or daily wage basis in the Integrated Child Development Scheme and the National Health Mission were being denied their right to basic minimum wages. He stated that “Our demand is that minimum fixed wages be given to every worker as set by the labour conference.”

After leading the protest at Residency Road, Tarigami spoke with reporters, reiterating his stance and emphasizing the importance of fair wages for all workers. He said, “Our demand is to implement the Minimum Wages Act in letter and spirit, so that the contractual system of employment is abolished, and every worker gets the minimum fixed wages as set by the labour conference.”

Tarigami also drew attention to the long history of struggles against labour exploitation in Kashmir, pointing out that “In Zaldagar Kashmir, labourers had protested for their rights even before the May Day protests in Chicago in 1886. Workers here had fought against the taxes imposed by the then government.”

UP: Cong leaders booked for assaulting party worker for donning saffron kurta

    [ad_1]

Amethi: The Amethi district Congress chief has been booked for allegedly abusing and beating up a party worker for donning a saffron kurta to the party office here, police said on Friday.

On the complaint of Akhilesh Shukla, an FIR has been lodged against Congress district unit president Pradeep Singhal, Youth Congress district president Shubham Singh and others for abusing and beating Shukla and issuing life threats to him, Station House Officer of Amethi Kotwali police station Arun Kumar Dwivedi said.

Shukla, a former vice president of the Amethi Congress unit, said when he visited the party office at Durgapur Road here wearing a saffron kurta and white pants on Thursday evening, party workers accused him of supporting the BJP through his attire instead of campaigning for the Congress for the upcoming municipal elections here, the police officer said.

The argument escalated soon and a dozen people, including Singhal and Singh, thrashed him fiercely and tore his clothes, he said quoting the Shukla’s complaint.

Subsequently, a case was registered late Thursday evening under the Indian Penal Code, Dwivedi said.

Dismissing Shukla’s allegations as “baseless”, Singh said it was a conspiracy to tarnish the Congress’ image.

He added that Shukla was making “wild allegations” as he failed to get a position in the district party leadership.

  • Gujarat HC issues notice to govt on plea to prevent sanitation worker deaths

Gujarat HC issues notice to govt on plea to prevent sanitation worker deaths

    [ad_1]

Ahmedabad: The Gujarat High Court on Tuesday issued a notice to the state government over a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking steps to prevent deaths of sanitation workers and compensation to the families of those who had died while cleaning drainage lines and septic tanks.

The division bench of acting Chief Justice A J Desai and Justice Biren Vaishnav issued a notice returnable on May 1, 2023 over a plea filed by NGO Manav Garima.

The petitioner claimed that the state government had failed to implement provisions of the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act, 2013 and sought the court’s direction for its proper implementation.

    MS Education Academy

The high court had in 2016 directed the government to pay Rs 10 lakh compensation to the families of each deceased sanitation workers on the PIL by the NGO. However, so far compensation has not been paid to the families of 26 out of 152 workers who died between 1993 and 2014, and 16 who died after the main petition was filed in 2016, it said.

Though section 7 of the 2013 Act prohibits local authorities or their agencies to engage people for hazardous cleaning of sewer in underground drainage lines or septic tanks, they have continued to do so, causing several deaths, the plea stated.

As many as 45 incidents have taken place, where 95 workers lost their lives while cleaning septic tanks, it claimed.

“This fact itself shows that the State has miserably failed to enforce section 7 of the Act in letter and spirit. It is pertinent to point out that in most of the cases, no offence is registered under section 7 or 9 of the Act,” it said.

As per the plea, in 2014, the government had issued guidelines imposing prohibition on cleaning of sewage from underground drainage to prevent deaths of workers, while in 2019, it directed local bodies to ensure that no person is permitted to enter manholes for cleaning drainage lines or septic tanks.

The state government also entrusted responsibility to the nodal officer or chief officer to ensure total prohibition of employment of manual scavengers in their respective areas and to initiate criminal action against offenders, the plea said.

None of the municipal corporations have till date constituted emergency response sanitation units (ERSUs), for which the state government had passed a resolution in 2021 to ensure that the cleaning operation is carried out using machines and no person is forced to enter into drainage lines for cleaning manually, it said.

  • No Shiv Sena worker involvement in Babri Masjid demolition, claims Maha minister

No Shiv Sena worker involvement in Babri Masjid demolition, claims Maha minister

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Maharashtra minister and senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Chandrakant Patil on Monday said not a single worker of the Shiv Sena was near the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya when it was brought down by the Bajrang Dal and Durga Vahini on December 6, 1992.

Patil, minister of higher and technical education in the Eknath Shinde government and a former Maharashtra BJP chief, made the comment while speaking to a regional news channel.

Incidentally, Shiv Sena founder late Bal Thackeray has often been quoted as saying that he was proud if any of his Sainiks took part in the demolition of the disputed structure.

    MS Education Academy

“I was placed there by the Bajrang Dal for three-four months to facilitate kar sevaks arriving in Ayodhya. People participating were either from Bajrang Dal, VHP or Durga Vahini. Former Bihar state deputy CM (and senior BJP leader) Sushil Kumar Modi, legislator Harendra Kumar and I were given the task to manage the kar sevaks and ensure their safe passage,” Patil claimed.

“We three were working there as national general secretaries. The RSS’ strength was behind us but it did not participate openly. It had distributed its work to like minded organisations,” Patil claimed.

Patil further said Shiv Sena (UBT) Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut keeps talking about the Babri Masjid demolition, adding he wondered if the latter was even there at the temple town in Uttar Pradesh at the time.

He also took a swipe at Uddhav Thackeray for accusing Chief Minister Eknath Shinde of stealing the legacy of Bal Thackeray.

The late Shiv Sena founder was not the property of anyone and was someone who was hugely respected by the people, Patil added.

“Balasaheb is the property of all Hindus and everyone is free to use his name (legacy),” said Patil.

The Shiv Sena split in June last year after the rebellion by Shinde, who got the party name and ‘bow and arrow’ symbol, while Uddhav Thackeray’s faction was christened Shiv Sena (UBT) with a flaming torch as its symbol.

NIA said that the case pertains to the conspiracy hatched by the proscribed militant organisations, such as Lashkar-e-Toida (LeT), Jaish-e-Mohammaed(JeM), Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM), alongwith their frontal organisations, such as TRF, PAFF etc and their Over Ground Workers operating in Jammu and Kashmir to undertake violent militant action in Kashmir valley and in other major cities of India, including Delhi.

According to NIA spokesman, investigations in the case had earlier established the connections of Commanders of these proscribed organisations based in Pakistan with their operatives in Kashmir valley to recruit and train the youth in handling of arms and explosives. They had floated a lot of propaganda material in cyberspace to talent-spot and recruit these individuals who then function as Sleeper cells and cause militant incidents, including targeted killings, acting in small groups or lone wolf actors. 26 persons have been earlier chargesheeted in the case, which include Pakistan based ‘listed individual militants’ Bashir Ahmed Peer @ Imtiyaz Alam and Imitiyaz [email protected] Fayaz Sopore. NIA has also attached the property of Bashir Ahmed Peer on 4th March, 2023 under Section 51A of the UA(P)Act.

During further investigations, NIA identified and arrested accused Md. Rafi Najar s/o Md.Abdullah Najar r/o Sopore, a close associate of Designated Terrorist Imityaz [email protected] Fayaz Sopore. He is a dealer in handicrafts and was based out of Pokhra, Nepal. He was found to be channelizing funds for proscribed militant organisations in the garb of legitimate trade of Kashmiri handicrafts. The profits accrued from the sale of the handicrafts were then sent to Kashmir valley through Hawala channels and distributed amongst the militants operating in the Valley through another chargesheeted over ground worker. The Chargesheet has been filed against Md. Rafi Najar on 20.03.2023 under various sections of IPC and UA(P)Act, reads the statement. (GNS)

‘I’m not giving up’: Sacked Indian-origin Meta worker

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Among the 11,000 employees which Meta laid off last year in November is an Indian-origin worker who also lost her job, has shared her ordeal on LinkedIn, saying “I am not giving up”.

Susmita Sahu, who worked in a Talent Accelerator Recruiting Team in Singapore, wrote in her LinkedIn post: “While I’m still processing what happened and I’m in true loss of the right words, I’m grateful for having an opportunity to work with some AMAZING people out there.”

“I’m also a part of the unfortunate Meta layoffs and I’ll be ever grateful to anyone who has any job recommendations for me. I’M NOT GIVING UP!” she added.

Sahu studied Master of Business Administration (MBA) in HR and Marketing from Biju Patnaik Institute of Information Technology and Management, (BIITM), Bhubaneswar.

She was laid off about six months after she joined the company.

In a follow-up post, she expressed a desire to spend more time with the company.

“It’s a little over 4 p.m. in Singapore and with all the acceptance (still some mental denial), we all finally complete signing the separation agreement. Reminds me of how lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard. I still wish my time at Meta was longer,” Sahu said.

Meanwhile, Meta looks all set to lay off another 13 per cent, or roughly 11,000 jobs, in its second round of job cuts that will hit non-engineering roles hard.

According to a report in The Wall Street Journal, citing sources, Meta Platforms is planning “additional layoffs to be announced in multiple rounds over the coming months”.
