Shinde leaves for Ayodhya; says will address criticism by work

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister and Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde on Saturday evening embarked on the tour of Ayodhya where he will offer prayers to Lord Ram by boarding a flight for Lucknow from Mumbai airport.

He is accompanied by leaders of Shiv Sena, MPs and MLAs, and leaders of ally BJP. Thousands of Shiv Sainiks are expected to reach Ayodhya on Saturday to welcome Shinde.

Anil Agrawal, convenor of Ayodhya Hotels’ Association, said: “The Shiv Sainiks from Maharashtra have booked the hotel rooms online in advance. We are ready to host the guests who are coming from Maharashtra with chief minister Eknath Shinde.”

    MS Education Academy

It will be Shinde’s maiden visit to Ayodhya after taking charge as Maharashtra chief minister in June 2022 and after the Election Commission recognised the faction led by him as Shiv Sena and allotted it the “bow and arrow” poll symbol.

Shinde will travel to Ayodhya from Lucknow on Sunday afternoon and perform a ‘maha aarti’ at the under-construction Ram temple with others and later at the Sharayu River in the evening. He is also scheduled to visit the ongoing construction of the Ram temple and will address a press conference in Ayodhya on Sunday afternoon. He will return to Mumbai on Sunday night, as per his aides.

The Shiv Sena has booked almost all the hotels, guest houses and dharamshalas to accommodate the Shiv Sena ministers, party MPs and MLAs.

Speaking to reporters at the Mumbai airport, the chief minister said he would respond to criticism of his Ayodhya visit through his work.

“It is good that because of our work, those who never ventured out of their homes are going out to meet people,” he said in a veiled swipe at Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and former chief minister Uddhav Thackeray.

“Ayodhya is a matter of faith for us. I thank PM Modi for expediting the construction of Ram temple,” said Shinde who shares power with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state.

Last November, Shinde and his loyalists paid a “gratitude visit” to the Kamakhya temple in Guwahati.

Meanwhile, Nationalist Congress Party leader Ajit Pawar has slammed the “publicity” around the Ayodhya visit of Shinde and also ridiculed relentless media updates on the latter’s programme there.

“When I offer prayers anywhere, I do not create such publicity. The chief minister is visiting there to seek blessings,” he told reporters.

The former Maharashtra deputy chief minister also said there are pressing issues related to unemployment, crime, and farmers’ distress that require more attention.

A special train carrying activists of Shiv Sena to Ayodhya left Thane railway station on Friday evening amidst slogans of Jai Shri Ram.

700 firefighters work to douse massive Dhaka wholesale market fire

    [ad_1]

Dhaka: About 700 firefighters continued working on Wednesday to completely douse a massive blaze that erupted at the Bangabazar in Dhaka — the biggest wholesale market in Bangladesh — 36 hours ago.

Brigadier General Md Main Uddin, Director General (DG) of the Fire Brigade of Bangladesh, told IANS that the firefighters were part of the 12 units that are currently pressed into service to douse the flames.

The firefighters are working in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh floors of the Anexco Tower that are warehouses.

“We had declared this building vulnerable in 2019. After that I also gave them notice about 10 times, so that they do not conduct business here. Still the traders conducted their business,” he said.

He said that to put out the fire in Bangabazar there was a lack of water.

“To put out the fire, we had to bring water from Shahidullah Hall with a pump. The Air Force also assisted in dousing the fire by bringing water from Hatirjheel by helicopter. We also brought water from Buriganga. Apart from the three forces, WASA also assisted us in this work.”

The fire erupted at 6.10 a.m. on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday assured to provide the best support to the traders who suffered losses due to the blaze.

“I have already said that I will help them as much as I can and will monitor what kind of damage has been done,” she said at an event.

Describing the fire as a very tragic incident, Hasina said the suffering and cries of so many trades ahead of Eid is too much to bear.

The Prime Minister also lambasted those who attacked and vandalized the fire service headquarters, adding that they will be identified soon and action will be taken against them.

Saif Ali Khan refuses to work with Jr NTR, here’s why

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan has always been known to pick unconventional roles and is known for his versatility as an actor. He has reportedly turned down an offer to star in the upcoming big-budget Telugu film NTR 30, which features Jr NTR and Janhvi Kapoor in the lead roles. He was approached to play antagonist in the movie.

While the exact reason behind Saif rejected this offer is unknown, it is possible that he might have felt that the role offered to him did not align with his vision. Alternatively, it could be a simple case of scheduling conflicts, with the actor having prior commitments that prevent him from taking up the project.

Whatever the reason may be, it is clear that Saif Ali Khan’s presence in NTR 30 would have added to the star power of the already much-anticipated film.

Speaking more NTR 30, the movie is being directed by Koratala Siva and is set to go on floors soon. It marks Janhvi Kapoor’s debut in Tollywood.

  • US court ends uncertainty over work permit for H-1B spouses

US court ends uncertainty over work permit for H-1B spouses

    [ad_1]

Washington: In major relief for thousands of Indian techies, a US court has dismissed a lawsuit that sought to deny work authorisation to spouses of H-1B visa holders in queue for Green Card, ending the uncertainty that has dogged them for years.

A district court of Washington ruled on Wednesday that the work authorisation is in compliance with the Immigration and Naturalisation Act and supported by “decades of Executive-branch practice, and both explicit and implicit congressional ratification of that practice”.

The United States had granted more than 59,000 work authorisations – called Employment Authorisation Documents (EADs) and Form I-765 – in 2021, including both initial and renewal to holders of H-4 visas that are granted to spouses of H-1B visa holders who are mostly from India. There are more than 100,000 H-4 EAD holders now, mostly women.

    MS Education Academy

The US has been granting EADs to H-4 spouses of H-1B visa holders whose applications have been accepted for Green Card since 2015, under a rule introduced by then President Barack Obama. The objective was to make it financially worthwhile for H-1 holders waiting for Green Card, which takes many years for applicants from India.

The rule, technically issued by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), was challenged by Save Jobs USA, an organisation of workers of a California company laid off because their jobs had been outsourced – also in 2015 – to two companies from India, Infosys and Tata Consultancy, which were staffed almost entirely at the time with Indian IT workers on H-1B visas.

The rule was defended by the DGS, joined by intervenors Immigration Voice and an impacted Indian-descent H-1B spouse, and friend-of-court filings from more than 40 companies and organisations.

Save Jobs USA had argued, chiefly, that the “rule lacks statutory authorization, violates the non-delegation doctrine, and is arbitrary and capricious”.

US District Judge Tanya S. Chutkan threw out their lawsuit, ending years of uncertainty, which included four years of President Donald Trump’s term, when immigration hardliners of his administration had appeared more sympathetic to the case made out by the Save Jobs USA than to DHS.

After proposing it in 2017, the Trump administration had notified a rule in 2019 rescinding the H-4 EAD rule.

And as an out-of-court settlement seemed between the Trump administration and Save Jobs USA, Immigration Voice, an advocacy group of Indians pushing for changes in US laws to end long waiting periods for Indians in queue for Green Card. Vikram Desai of the organisation said it was this intervention that prevented the out-of-court settlement.

“None of the big tech companies in 2017 and during the Trump administration did anything to help with saving the H4 EAD programme. In fact, big tech discouraged their employees citing fear of retaliation from the Trump administration,” Desai said, adding, “Our members have been extremely upset about the double-standards that the large tech companies continue to show on high-skilled immigration and equality for their employees.”

President Joe Biden withdrew the Trump era proposal on his first day in office, among a whole host of other rules and decisions from his predecessor’s administration. Clearly, the Biden administration has been in favour of letting H-1B spouses work, as ordered during President Obama’s tenure.

The court order has ended all and any remaining uncertainty.

Hyderabad techie kills self due to work pressure

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: A software engineer died by suicide in Hyderabad due to work pressure and fear of losing job.

Vinod Kumar (32), working for a software company in Hyderabad, hanged himself at his brother’s house in Alkapur township, police said.

Hailing from Guntur in Andhra Pradesh, the techie was finding it difficult to cope with the pressure due to some new work tools introduced by the company. He was also worried over lack of job security and shared with his brother the fear of losing the job.

Vinod Kumar was till recently working from home in Guntur but after the company directed him to start working from office, he had moved to Hyderabad and was staying with his brother.

The techie took the extreme step on Thursday. His brother and his wife had gone out and he was alone at home. Police said he hanged himself to the ceiling fan with a bedsheet.

When Vinod Kumar’s brother returned home, he found him hanging. He rushed him to a hospital but doctors declared him dead. He is survived by wife and three daughters.

Narsingi police registered a case and took up investigation.

  • Spouses of H-1B Visa holders in tech sector can work in US: Judge

Spouses of H-1B Visa holders in tech sector can work in US: Judge

    [ad_1]

New York: In an immigration-friendly move, a judge has ruled that spouses of highly-skilled H-1B visa holders in tech sector can now work in the US, thus upholding an Obama-era rule under which partners were issued H-4 visas.

US District Judge Tanya Chutkan on Tuesday dismissed arguments by Save Jobs USA, who claimed that the Congress never granted the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) authority to allow foreign nationals, like H-4 visa-holders, to work during their stay in the US.

“That contention runs headlong into the text of the (Immigration and Nationality Act), decades of executive-branch practice, and both explicit and implicit congressional ratification of that practice,” Chutkan wrote in her ruling.

She further said that the DHS has authorised employment not just for students, but also for their spouses and dependents.

The lawsuit was also opposed by big tech firms like Amazon, Apple, Google, and Microsoft.

H4 visas are issued to dependent spouses and children who accompany H-1B, H-2A, H-2B, and H-3 visa holders to the US.

The spouses of H-1B visa holders tend to be highly educated, many of them in STEM fields, and previously had careers of their own or worked to support their families.

In 2021, Google filed a legal brief with over 40 companies to protect the work authorisation programme that allows the spouses of H-1B visa holders to work in the US.

As part of his anti-immigration policy, former President Donald Trump had proposed to end the issuing of work authorisation (H-4 EAD) for certain spouses of high-skilled talent who came to the US on H-1B visas.

According to a National Foundation for American Policy (NFAP) analysis, 90 per cent of the spouses of H-1B visa holders are female, two-thirds are from India and 6 per cent from China.

“The US can reap significant economic benefits, ease labor shortages, and attract more workers in the global competition for talent if it expanded current rules on work eligibility for the spouses of H-1B visa holders,” the 2022 study by NFAP said.
