Saving Lahaul’s Willows: Himachal Pradesh Turns To Kashmir Wood

SRINAGAR: In the picturesque Lahaul valley of Himachal Pradesh, an ecological disaster is unfolding as the willow trees that have sustained the region’s inhabitants for generations are dying. A mysterious disease, coupled with improper irrigation resulting from a lack of winter snowfall, is the cause of this devastation. The valley’s residents rely on the willows for firewood and fodder, making this an urgent situation that requires immediate attention.
To address this crisis, the Himachal Pradesh government has announced a plan to grow Kashmir willows in nurseries before planting them in the forest. The government has already planted 3.4 lakh trees, but more action is needed to save the valley’s source of livelihood.
Lahaul-Spiti legislator Ravi Thakur brought the issue to the assembly’s attention, stating that the willow trees had decayed in just 18 years, impacting every household in the valley. He proposed that more Kashmir willows be planted to replace the decaying trees.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu responded by saying that the government is searching for a cure and replacement for the decaying trees. The government is currently conducting studies to find the cause of the decay at Palampur’s Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishavvidyalaya and Nauni’s Dr Y S Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry. The government has also enlisted the help of Shimla’s Himalayan Forestry Research Institute to find the cause of decay and develop disease-resistant cloned varieties of willow for Lahaul-Spiti.
To ensure the survival of the trees, the forest department has recommended growing willows in polybags at nurseries instead of planting them as naked rootstock. The department is also advising local landowners to use this technique. Additionally, the plantation site must be located near irrigation facilities since willows need a lot of water to grow. Rootstock for plantation should be selected from healthy, young, and vigorous plants, with pollarding done scientifically to avoid mechanical damage.
While the government has recommended a mixed plantation of willow species based on local suitability, it has stated that it will not replace the decaying forest trees with Kashmiri willow trees to prevent the spread of disease caused by monoculture.

GI Tagging For Basohli Painting, Ladakh Wood Carving

SRINAGAR: The world famous Basohli Paintings from Kathua district of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir and the Ladakh Wood Carving of Union Territory of Ladakh have received the Geographical Indication (GI) Tag, media reports said.
A geographical indication (GI) is a sign used on product that has special geographical origin. In order to function as a GI, a sign must identify a product as originating in a given place. It provides a legal protection to the products and prevents their unauthorised use.
The process for GI Tagging of these products was started by NABARD in consultation with and support from the Department of Handicrafts and Handloom in December 2020.
The GI tags have now finally been granted to these products after a long legal process.
Out of the 33 GI tags that India got this year, these two products from UT of Jammu and Kashmir and UT of Ladakh made it to the list.
The Daily Excelsior reported that earlier GI tags were given to Kashmir handicrafts but they did not include Jammu and Ladakh. The Basohli painting of Kathua district is the first independent GI tag from the Jammu region whereas the Ladakh Wood Carving is the first handicraft of Ladakh to get a GI Tag.

UP horror: Minor tortured, wood pieces found in her private parts

Prayagraj: An 11-year-old girl has been admitted to the city’s cantonment board hospital with brutal injuries
The doctors not only found torture marks on her body but also pieces of wood from her private parts.
The woman, who brought the girl to the hospital, claims that she adopted the minor. However, the police detained her after she could not give a satisfactory response to questions about the girl’s injuries.
The accused woman called Dr Sidharth Pandey and told him that the 11-year-old sustained minor injuries during a sibling fight.
The next morning, she visited the hospital with the girl and the doctors were shocked to find out the nature of the injuries.
Dr Pandey said, “An X-ray revealed several old and new injuries on her body, including her private parts. Following this, she was examined by a female gynaecologist who found pieces of wood in her private parts. The girl also had a fractured hand. In view of the injuries, we informed the police.”
The accused woman is a resident of an apartment in the Dhumanganj area of the city and her husband is a teacher at a prominent school.
The woman claimed that she had adopted the girl from a shelter home in Kanpur, but the girl has said that following her mother’s death and abandonment by her father, she was taken home by the accused.

The child also revealed that she was starved routinely and not given food for more than 14 days in a month, added Dr Pandey.
Sharing further details, Rajesh Maurya, SHO of Dhumanganj police station, said that the accused woman has been detained and is being questioned.
“Based on the findings of the questioning, we will take further actions,” he said.
The injured girl is undergoing treatment at the Cantonment Board Hospital, he added.

Roy Wood Jr., the stand-up comedian known for his work on Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show,” will be the featured entertainer at the 2023 annual White House Correspondents’ dinner, the Correspondents’ Association announced on Thursday.
“It will be a great night that will go down in the history books, or not, depending on which state you live in,” Wood said in the announcement.
The dinner, set for April 29, is typically attended by numerous Washington VIPs, including the president and first lady. The annual event, attended for decades by presidents from both parties, became a political flash point during the Trump administration when then-President Donald Trump refused to attend the event amid his frequent tirades against the Washington press corps. The dinner was canceled amid the Covid pandemic in 2020 and 2021 but returned last year with President Joe Biden in attendance.
