Women not wearing hijab will be refused entry to Tehran Metro

New Delhi: Hijab enforcement groups will be set up on the Tehran Metro and those not wearing hijab will be refused entry, in effect banning some women from work, as per Iranian state TV, a media report said.

The move appears to be part of a pattern of government efforts to force Iranian public bodies to take greater responsibility for enforcing the hijab, The Guardian reported.

Many Iranian women, especially in urban centres, have refused to comply with the hijab rule, in a sign that the “women, life, freedom” protests that began in September last year continue in a more individualised form, the report said.

The latest threatening clampdown comes as girls in secondary schools in Tehran, Karaj and other cities continue to report poison attacks. At least nine schools were reported to have been attacked on Sunday. According to Iranian MP Mohammad Hassan Asefari, a government fact-finding committee said the security agencies had been unable to identify the perpetrators, while the Ministry of Health is yet to determine the nature of the poison being used.

The contrast between the urgency of the efforts to enforce the hijab and the inability of the investigators to use CCTV to identify those behind the poison attacks has infuriated opponents of the government.

The Tehran Metro Company had already announced that “in line with the demands of the noble people of Iran on the issue of hijab”, it was launching a verbal reminder project in Tehran and suburban Metro stations. But the latest pictures on Iran state TV show Metro staff barring women trying to pass through the ticket barrier without a hijab, The Guardian reported.

Masoud Darshti, the Chief Executive of Tehran and Suburbs Metro Operation Company, had announced the establishment of a chastity and hijab headquarters to issue reminders. He said his staff would be required to implement any police order, but added that he had not yet personally received the instruction formally.

Iran installs cameras in public places to identify women breaking dress code

Tehran: The Iranian authorities will use cameras in public places to identify women who violate the country’s hijab law, state media reported, according to CNN.

Notably, under Iran’s Islamic Sharia law, imposed after the 1979 revolution, women are obliged to cover their hair and wear long, loose-fitting clothes to disguise their figures. Violators have faced public rebuke, fines or arrest.

Iranian women who don’t cover their hair risk being arrested. As part of the widespread protests, many have been disobeying the mandatory dress code, following the death of a young woman while she was being held for allegedly breaking hijab laws.

Yet, authorities don’t appear to be changing their stance on the matter.

“Kn an innovative measure and in order to prevent tension and conflicts in implementing the hijab law, Iranian police will use smart cameras in public places to identify people who break the norms,” the state-aligned Tasnim news agency quoted police as saying, CNN reported.

After the women have been identified, they would be sent warning messages which detail the specific time and place they had “violated” the law, reported CNN.

“In the context of preserving values, protecting family privacy and maintaining the mental health and peace of mind of the community, any kind of individual or collective behaviour against the law, will not be tolerated,” CNN reported quoting Tasnim.

Earlier this month, a viral video showed a man throwing yoghurt on two women for not wearing their hijab.

The video shows a male staff member removing the suspect from the store. The two women were arrested after being issued an arrest warrant for failing to wear the hijab in public, according to Mizan News Agency. Iranian officials said the incident is under investigation, and the male suspect has been arrested for a disturbance of order, reported CNN.

Later, both women were arrested for violating Iran’s dress code.

Describing the veil as “one of the civilizational foundations of the Iranian nation” and “one of the practical principles of the Islamic Republic,” an Interior Ministry statement said there would be no “retreat or tolerance” on the issue.

It urged citizens to confront unveiled women. Such directives have in past decades emboldened hardliners to attack women without impunity.

In September 2022, Iranians took to the streets nationwide in protest for several months against Iran’s mandatory hijab law, and political and social issues across the country, following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in the custody of the morality police.

Women have burned their headscarves and cut their hair, with some schoolgirls removing them in classrooms.

Those arrested for participating in anti-government demonstrations have faced various forms of abuse and torture, including electric shocks, controlled drowning, rape and mock executions.

Self Respecting Women Don’t Invent Rape Stories: JK HC

SRINAGAR: The High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh recently noted that violent crimes against women and children are on the rise, and therefore, courts should not show any leniency to persons booked for such crimes, Bar and Bench reported.

Justice Mohan Lal refused bail to a man who was imprisoned since June 2021 for raping his neighbour’s 10-year-old daughter. The Court stated that no woman would falsely accuse someone of raping her own underage daughter, putting her character at risk.

“Rape is the most hated crime in the society which leaves a scar upon the most cherished personality of a victim, and, therefore, no self-respecting woman would normally concoct a story of rape,” the order stated.

According to the Bench, being lenient in cases related to sexual offenses is not just undesirable but also contrary to the public interest.

“Courts cannot lose sight of the fact that crime of violence upon women and minor children are on increase and therefore the perpetrators of the crime must be dealt with iron hands…Showing leniency in such matters would be really a case of misplaced sympathy. The act of accused is not only shocking, but outrageous in contours. Granting of bail to him would lead to the danger of the course of justice being thwarted”

The judge opined that such a heinous act would leave an enduring mark on the victim’s dignity, chastity, honour, and reputation in society, and if the accused were granted bail, it would shake the confidence of the people at large.

The victim was raped by the accused while she was collecting water from a tap in her neighbourhood, and he threatened her not to disclose the incident to anyone. Nevertheless, a week after the incident, she informed her parents of her ordeal, and as a result, the accused was arrested and charged under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 4 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012 (POCSO) Act. The accused claimed that he was falsely accused by the victim’s family because the two families were at odds over a civil matter involving the passage outside their homes.

The Court stated that rape permanently scars a woman’s most treasured possession and has a significant psychological impact on the victim and her family. “The prosecutrix would not have concocted a rape story against the accused to falsely implicate him by putting her honour, character, reputation, and future marriage prospects on the line in society,” the judge said. In its order, the Court observed that the crimes alleged against the accused would result in a sentence of imprisonment for the remainder of his natural life or a minimum of 20 years in prison.

“The more severe the punishment, the greater the likelihood that the accused will abscond or flee from justice if released on bail. There is a risk that he will abscond or flee during the trial if granted bail,” the Court stated while denying bail to the accused.
