    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Delhi Police on Sunday provided security to all seven women wrestlers who have lodged complaints against Brijbhushan Sharan Singh, the president of the Wrestling Federation of India.

The Supreme Court had asked the Delhi Police to provide appropriate security to the victims who have levelled allegations against Singh.

The Delhi Police have also called all the women wrestlers to join the probe and get their 161 CrPC statement recorded so that they could decide the future course of action.

    MS Education Academy

Sources said that in a day or two the women wrestlers can come to Delhi Police’s Connaught Place Police Station to get their statements recorded.

On Saturday, a copy of one of the two FIRs lodged against Singh was handed over to the top grapplers who are protesting at the Jantar Mantar here.

However, the copy of the other FIR registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act has not been given to the wrestlers as it will be handed over to the victim’s family, the police added.

A senior police official said that they will soon record the statements of the victims.

On Friday evening, police registered FIRs against the WFI president in response to the allegations made by the women wrestlers.

  • UNSC condemns Taliban’s call to ban Afghan women from working for UN

UNSC condemns Taliban’s call to ban Afghan women from working for UN

    [ad_1]

United Nations: The UN Security Council has unanimously condemned the decision by the Taliban to ban Afghan women from working for the United Nations in Afghanistan, calling on the de facto authorities to “swiftly reverse” policies and practices that restrict women and girls from exercising their human rights.

The 15-nation Council, under the current Presidency of Russia, unanimously passed the resolution on Thursday that “condemns the decision by the Taliban to ban Afghan women from working for the United Nations in Afghanistan, which undermines human rights and humanitarian principles.”

The resolution also calls for the full, equal, meaningful and safe participation of women and girls in Afghanistan.

    MS Education Academy

It also calls upon the Taliban to “swiftly reverse the policies and practices that restrict the enjoyment by women and girls of their human rights and fundamental freedoms including related to their access to education, employment, freedom of movement, and women’s full, equal and meaningful participation in public life.”

It urges all States and organisations to use their influence, in conformity with the Charter of the United Nations, to promote an urgent reversal of these policies and practices.

Permanent Representative of the United Arab Emirates to the UN Ambassador Lana Nusseibeh, delivering a statement on behalf of Japan and her country in their capacity as co-penholders on the Afghanistan file, said the restrictions imposed by the Taliban are unprecedented in the history of the United Nations, and they put the very presence of the UN in Afghanistan in jeopardy.

“By adopting this resolution, the Council would send an unequivocal message of condemnation and a clear call for the swift reversal, not only of this latest ban but of others restricting the rights of women and girls in Afghanistan,” she said.

Noting that over 90 states co-sponsored the resolution, not just from the Security Council, but from Afghanistan’s immediate neighbourhood, from the Muslim world, and from all corners of the Earth, Nusseibeh said: “This cross-regional support makes our fundamental message today even more significant: the world will not sit by silently as women in Afghanistan are erased from society.”

US Ambassador Robert Wood, Alternate Representative for Special Political Affairs, told the Council that Muslim-majority countries have spoken out against the Taliban’s rationale for these decisions.

In January, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation emphasised that Islamic law calls for women’s education, work, and participation in public life.

The UN and its Member States will not remain on the sidelines when women and girls are deprived of exercising their human rights.

“The Taliban’s edicts are causing irreparable damage to Afghanistan they erase women and girls from society. They also move the Taliban further from its desire to normalize relations with the international community.

“The United States continues to urge an inclusive political process among Afghans that leads to a representative government a government that is accountable to its people and fully reflects Afghanistan’s rich diversity, including the meaningful participation of women and members of minority communities,” he said.

The resolution also reiterated its demand that all parties allow full, rapid, safe, and unhindered humanitarian access for the personnel of United Nations humanitarian agencies, their partners, and other humanitarian actors and providers of basic services, regardless of gender.

Russia’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia said that Moscow notes the efforts of UAE and Japan who searched for “compromise solutions” while taking into account a wide range of positions and wanted to draft a document that should account for the whole set of challenges that Afghanistan is faced with today.

“In this regard, it causes sincere regret and disappointment that steps towards a more prominent reflection of all these problems were actually blocked by a number of Western colleagues led by the United States,” he said.

Nebenzia added that Moscow does not welcome the decision of the Taliban to restrict the rights of women and girls and that these bans must be lifted.

“However, the real reasons for the unresolved issue of unfreezing Afghan assets that belong to the Afghan people; calls for increasing humanitarian assistance and restoring the country’s economy; and the negative consequences of unilateral sanctions did not make it to the resolution.

“This approach of Western colleagues no longer surprises us though. This is just another example of the double standards of the US and its allies when discussing various conflicts in the Council,” he said.

A record 28.3 million people in Afghanistan are in need of assistance this year, making Afghanistan the world’s largest aid operation, with the UN asking for USD 4.6 billion to fully fund relief efforts this year.

The decision by the Taliban earlier this month to prohibit Afghan women from working for the UN in Afghanistan was strongly condemned by leaders of the World organisation.

The UN was notified by the de facto authorities that no Afghan woman was permitted to work for the UN in Afghanistan and that this measure will be actively enforced.

The decision extended the directive previously announced in December last year, banning Afghan women from working for national and international non-governmental organisations.

The UN had approximately 3,900 staff in Afghanistan, approximately 3,300 are nationals and 600 internationals.

Of those, there are about 400 women nationals and 200 women internationals. The UN instructed all national staff men and women not to report to the office until further notice.

In rare show of unanimity, Security Council slams Taliban ban on UN women workers

    [ad_1]

United Nations: Ahead of an international meeting convened by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on dealing with the Taliban, the Security Council in a rare show of unanimity has voted unanimously to condemn the regime’s ban on women working for the world organisation in Afghanistan.

The Council resolution adopted on Thursday also expressed “deep concern at the increasing erosion of respect for the human rights and fundamental freedoms of women and girls” and demanded that the Taliban “swiftly reverse” the restrictions placed on them.

Special representatives for Afghanistan from several countries are scheduled to convene on May 1-2 in Doha for the meeting to be chaired by Guterres to work out a united approach to deal with the Taliban.

    MS Education Academy

India was one of about 20 countries from Europe, Asia, the Middle East and North America invited to the meeting.

The unanimous adoption of the Council resolution proposed by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Japan and co-sponsored by about 90 countries underlines the Taliban regime’s isolation and signals international unity before the Doha meeting.

The UAE’s Permanent Representative Lana Zaki Nusseibeh said: “This cross-regional support makes our fundamental message today even more significant: the world will not sit by silently as women in Afghanistan are erased from society.

“The resolution also makes it clear that stability, economic recovery, and political reconciliation is not possible in Afghanistan without the inclusion of Afghan women and girls.”

The US Alternate Representative for Special Political Affairs Robert Wood called the Taliban’s edicts on women “indefensible” and said, “Muslim-majority countries have spoken out against the Taliban’s rationale for these decisions”.

The Taliban invokes the Islamic Sharia law to justify its actions.

“In January, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation emphasized that Islamic law calls for women’s education, work, and participation in public life,” Wood said.

The Taliban extended its ban to about 600 Afghan women working for the UN earlier this month.

In protest, the UN asked all its employees — about 2,700 Afghan men and 600 international workers, including 200 women who were exempt from the ban — to stay home, disrupting the humanitarian work in the country.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Russia’s Permanent Representative Vassily Nebenzia, who presided over the Council meeting said: “We are happy that we were unanimous, but we were not completely happy because there is the resolution did not reflect all the issues relating to Afghanistan.”

Russia’s reservation, also shared by China, was that the resolution did not demand that the US release the $7 billion Afghan Central Bank money frozen by it after the August 2021 Taliban takeover of the war-torn nation.

Washington has set up a $3.5 billion trust fund for Afghanistan out of the frozen accounts in Switzerland to allow some of it to be used for that country.

  • Japan pledges to have women in third of top boardroom roles by 2030

Japan pledges to have women in third of top boardroom roles by 2030

    [ad_1]

Japan’s prime minister, Fumio Kishida, has said he wants almost a third of executive positions at the country’s top companies to be occupied by women by the end of the decade.

In an apparent attempt to address Japan’s poor record on gender equality ahead of the G7 leaders’ summit in Hiroshima next month, Kishida said more boardroom diversity would boost the world’s third-biggest economy.

“We seek to have the ratio of women among executives at 30% or more by 2030 in companies that are listed on the Tokyo stock exchange’s prime market,” Kishida told officials, including the minister of state for gender equality – who is male – at a meeting this week. His 19-member cabinet includes just two women.

“Securing diversity through promoting women’s empowerment, and enabling innovation as a result, is crucial to achieving new capitalism and an inclusive society,” Kishida added.

Japan has drawn criticism for the lack of women in senior positions in the private sector and in public life. Women represented only 11.4% of executives in major listed companies in Japan last year, according to a cabinet office survey, although the figure has been rising in recent years.

In politics, too, there are signs of progress, with parties attempting to recruit more women to run for office after a 2018 gender equality law required them to “make efforts” to select similar numbers of male and female candidates.

Although women occupy only about 10% of seats in the lower house of parliament, a record number of female candidates won seats in last summer’s upper house elections. 28% of upper house seats are held by women.

In another encouraging sign, Shoko Takahashi, a female member of a government panel, this week joined a meeting accompanied by her two-month-old baby. Takahashi, the founder of the personal genome company Genequest, is thought to be the first person to take their newborn to a work gathering at the prime minister’s office.

And a recent round of local elections saw a record seven women voted in as mayors in smaller cities, while Arfiya Eri, a woman of Uyghur and Uzbek descent, won a byelection for a seat in the lower house as a candidate for the ruling Liberal Democratic party.

But Japan’s corporate sector still has a long way to go to catch up with comparable economies, and has also struggled to narrow the gender pay gap – Japan ranked 116th out of 146 countries in the World Economic Forum’s 2022 Global Gender Gap report.

Few observers believe change will come until more women, who form the backbone of the part-time, low-pay economy, are given permanent positions and help balancing work with family commitments.

Japan, this year’s G7 host, has come under pressure to address its record on gender equality. This month, Norway’s sovereign wealth fund – the world’s biggest – said it would vote against board nominations at Japanese firms in which it invests that do not have any female directors, Nikkei Asia reported – a move that could affect as many as 300 listed companies.

In a recent interview with Kyodo news, the EU commissioner for jobs and social rights, Nicolas Schmit, said Japan’s gender gap resembled the situation in Europe “20 or 30 years ago”.

Precedent indicates that Kishida could struggle to reach his goal. In 2003, the then prime minister, Junichiro Koizumi, set a similar quota for female executive representation by 2020, but the number of women in managerial positions by that date fell short of the target.

Congress announces fifth poll ‘guarantee’: free travel for women in public transport buses

    [ad_1]

Mangaluru: Announcing the fifth poll “guarantee” of the Congress ahead of the May 10 Assembly polls in Karnataka, party leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday promised free travel for women in public transport buses, if the party is voted to power in the state.

Rahul Gandhi is in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts, campaigning for the party’s candidates in the upcoming elections.
He hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for saying that the Congress would not fulfil its guarantees.

“Narendra Modi says Congress party will not fulfil its guarantees. We have given you (people) four guarantees and they will be implemented on the first day, in the first cabinet meeting. Modi ji, you said four guarantees will not be fulfilled, I’m adding more to it. We will not fulfil four guarantees on the first day, but will fulfil five,” Gandhi said.

    MS Education Academy

Addressing a public meeting here, he said, “We will add another guarantee to four existing guarantees. It will be for women. Modi ji, listen carefully. As soon as Congress comes to power, on the very first day the fifth guarantee will also be implemented — women across Karnataka will travel free in public transport buses.”

“Your (BJP) people looted money from Karnataka’s women with 40 per cent commission, it is your work. While our work is to give Karnataka’s women the state’s money. So immediately after winning the election, whenever you meet a woman in buses, they would not be paying a single rupee to travel in buses,” he added.

Congress has already announced four guarantees’ 200 units of free power to all households (Gruha Jyoti), Rs 2,000 monthly assistance to the woman head of every family (Gruha Lakshmi), 10 kg of rice free to every member of a BPL household (Anna Bhagya), and Rs 3,000 every month for graduate youth and Rs 1,500 for diploma holders (both in the age group of 18-25) for two years (YuvaNidhi), on coming to power in the state.

Asking the voters to limit the BJP to 40 seats in the state, as they were a party that ran a “40 percent commission government”, Gandhi said, “The number is comfortable for them.”

He alleged that the BJP had made “stealing” a habit and were betraying all sections of people including the youth, farmers and fishermen. The BJP could not provide employment to the youth as promised. Inflation increased under the BJP rule and several small-scale industries were closed during the regime, he said.

A decision on all the promises in the Congress guarantee card would be made at the first cabinet meeting of the next government, Gandhi said, adding that the Narendra Modi government had not kept any of its promises including providing two crore jobs for the youth in a year and Rs 15 lakh to every household by rooting out corruption.

“The BJP is not keeping the promises to the poor, youth and farmers and has not done anything for them, whereas they have kept the promises made to Adani,” Gandhi charged.

He said he was disqualified from Parliament for asking questions about the link between the BJP government and Adani. “The ruling party has not given answer to my question yet,” he said.

Congress’ fifth poll promise, interestingly, came on a day, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressing Karnataka BJP workers virtually made a strong pitch for ending “revdi culture” (culture of distributing freebies).

Accusing the Congress of engaging in “revdi culture” in Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan, Modi said their poll guarantees have still remained unfulfilled. “Congress means guarantee of corruption, guarantee of nepotism,” he had said.

“Congress has reached a stage where it cannot give true guarantees, you are aware that Congress’s warranty has expired, then what is the meaning of its guarantees,” he added.

  • 255,000 Saudi women joined labor market in 15 months

255,000 Saudi women joined labor market in 15 months

    [ad_1]

Riyadh: About 2.5 million Saudis and expatriates have joined Saudi labor market in the past 15 months, local media reported.

The reports monitored by the Arabic daily Okaz based on government data that women made up majority of the total number of 428,000 Saudis who were employed in the local labor market during the period from the beginning of the last quarter of 2021 until the end of the year 2022.

A total of 255000 Saudi women joined the labor market while the number of Saudi men who were employed during the period reached about 173,000.

    MS Education Academy

During the 15-month period, the number of expatriates who joined the labor market exceeded 1.62 million. Among them 1.43 million men and 197,000 women.

It was revealed in the monitoring that the Saudi unemployment rate recorded its lowest historical levels in the fourth quarter of 2022, due to the continuous employment of citizens and residents in the last 15 months.

The monitoring was based on the data from the General Organization for Social Insurance (GOSI), the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development (MoHRSD) and the National Information Center (NIC).

It is noteworthy that the total number of foreign domestic workers in the Kingdom reached 3.6 million by the end of 2022, including 2.63 million men, most of whom are house drivers, servants and house cleaners, while the number of domestic workers reached 972,000.

During the past few years, Saudi Arabia announced the localization of workers in several economic sectors, as part of the Kingdom’s efforts to reduce the unemployment rate to 7 per cent by 2030, as part of its vision to diversify sources of income and reduce dependence on oil.
