  • Turkish women defy ban on protests, stage ‘Feminist Night March’

Turkish women defy ban on protests, stage ‘Feminist Night March’

    [ad_1]

Istanbul: Turkish women have defied a ban on protests and staged an annual march called “Feminist Night March” in Istanbul’s Taksim Square to mark International Women’s Day.

Although the police allowed the protesters on Wednesday night to carry on with their march for a while, later they used tear gas to disperse them, reports the BBC.

    Several people were also detained.

The women had gathered in the city’s Istiklal Street despite the ban imposed by the Beyoglu district governor’s office for all kinds of demonstrations and marches in the area, including the women’s day march.

Marking International Women’s Day, the main opposition Republican People’s Party earlier in the day released a report which said that more than 600 women had been killed in Turkey by men since 2021, when President Recep Tayyip Erdogan withdrew the country from the Istanbul Convention — a treaty that aimed to combat domestic violence.

In a statement titled “we are sorry, we are angry”, the march organiser criticised the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) for failing to handle a range of crises and problems including ongoing economic deterioration, the coronavirus pandemic, the February 6 earthquakes that claimed more than 46,000 lives, and increasing racism and promoting LGBT+ hatred and patriarchy, reports the Turkish Minute news website.

It said that women are determined to continue their fight against patriarchy, homophobia, transphobia, exploitation of labour and capitalism.

The women at the march also chanted slogans calling on the government to resign.

“We are not going to be silent, we will not be intimidated, and we are not obeying you,” they said.

Every year, thousands of women gather in Taksim Square for the “Feminist Night March”, which marks the continuation of the world-famous “Reclaim the Night” movement, despite bans from authorities and police violence and detention.

  • Role of women in formation of Telangana

Role of women in formation of Telangana

    [ad_1]

The role of women in any society is no less than men though it is usually not highlighted in the way it should be.

Women’s Day, celebrated on March 8, thus gives an opportunity to us to acknowledge this role of women.

In Telangana, too women leaders have played a significant role in its freedom as a separate state and shaping its society.  However, even though masses of women fought alongside men in the struggle for Telangana only a few of them got into positions of power. Most of the women leaders’ contribution seems to have been forgotten.

Telangana earlier part of Hyderabad state after a decade of Independence merged with Andhra Pradesh.

However, people of Telangana kept on striving for their separate state which was eventually successful in 2014 on June 2.

Women of Telangana played a major role in the realization of the dreams of Telangana people to have a state of their own. There were several issues that agitated the women and they fought against those like domestic violence and the scourge of dowry,  human trafficking and the liquor mafia as it had a disastrous effect on their family life.

Leading among these women was Belli Lalitha called the nightingale of Telangana.

Interestingly she used her folk songs to inspire people to struggle for their rights and demand their own state.

Herself a school dropout and worker in cotton mill, she later became a labour and political leader. Belli Lalitha was brutally murdered on 26 May 1999 by a former member of the Peoples War Group (PWG) and a notorious gangster. Her body was hacked into 17 parts and thrown in different locations. This instead of serving as a warning against the movement gave fillip to it which grew much stronger after this attempt at suppression.

Ben Lalitha’s songs became a means to mobilize women.

In meetings where thousands gathered to stress the need for a separate state like  Bhuvanagiri Sabha and Jana Sabha, Ben Lalitha used to participate and sing her inspirational songs stirring the crowds.

She worked with the anti liquor movement and also contributed to the awareness on issues of dowry, domestic violence.

Her murder by her opponents led to the demand for Telangana state becoming very strong and widespread with her popular songs energizing everyone and intensifying the struggle.

Earlier too during the 1950s, many women were involved in the demand by Telangana people for a separate state which was an armed resistance of women and men against feudal oppression and domination in the Telangana region.

At that time the armed struggle was led by communists and against the feudalistic zamindari system.

Actually, the people in the Telangana region fought against the Andhra people who were alleged to dominate in the Telangana region.

Telangana women played a very important role in the struggle for separate state which also aligned and focused on women-related issues including domestic violence, equal pay for equal work,  alcoholism, toilet for women, prostitution, forced labour.

Another well-known woman is clearly Chityala Ailamma who played a significant role in the armed struggle of the Telangana movement, particularly the peasant struggle led by communists against the zamindars inspiring many people.

The peasants were agitating against forced labour and eviction from their land who eventually joined the struggle for separate Telangana. Several attempts were made by landlords and goondas to get Ailamma’s land but all failed as peasants united and fought against it inspiring lot of other men and women.

She actively resisted all the oppressive practices of the patriarchal society.

She mobilized women organising protests and rallies from the rural areas of Telangana to participate in the struggle. She educated women on their rights and encouraged them to come forward and take part in the movement.

She faced arrested and jailed many times.

Freedom fighter Ms G.Susheela  a guerrilla fighter from Warangal district was part of the armed Telangana Rebellion against the Nizam government and the British. She was part of the underground cell of the Communist Party of India.

She mobilized peasants and was involved in undertaking secret propaganda to oust the government. She was imprisoned many times.

Duvvuri Subbamma a freedom fighter and social activist also from the Warangal district was actively involved in the Telangana Rebellion against Nizam and British rule. She also contributed to the upliftment of women and worked closely with  Mahatma Gandhi and Sarojini Naidu. She went to prison many times.

She worked for women’s education and established schools for girls in Rajahmundry. She also founded the Women’s Education Society to promote education for girls.

She urged for promotion of the rights of women in Indian society and fought for right to vote, equal pay for equal work, and an end to child marriage and dowry. She became a  Congress Rajya Sabha Member.

There were many others who made great contributions in the spread of women’s education, women’s empowerment and many other areas of social welfare. The greatness of these leaders lay in the fact they inspired large sections of women to come out and fight for their rights and place in society as well fight against any oppressive regime.

Some well-known names would be Ms Sarojini Naidu, Sanghamitra Lakshmi Bai, Chennaboina  Kamalamma , Mallu Swarajam, Arutla Kamala Devi.

We should let our daughters be educated and them aware of their legal rights and responsibilities, says Director Colleges Dr Yasmeen Ashaiye; Would like to extend warmest greetings to all the women who break the glass ceiling in today’s world, DYSP Syed Sleet Shah; Living in an era where each and every word of your news item matters, this field provided me platform to express myself and helped me to prove my identity, budding female journo

    Rehan Qayoom Mir

Srinagar, Mar 7 (GNS): International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated annually all over the world on March 8, to recognize the achievements and contributions of women to society. The history of IWD can be traced back to the early 1900s when women in different countries began to organize and agitate for their rights, including the right to vote, work, and receive an education.

To commemorate the day in consonance with world-wide celebrations, Kashmir witnessed various functions being organized across length and breadth.

Events were organized at North Campus of Kashmir University Delina, Baramulla, Women’s College M.A Road Srinagar, among others. The programs were organized to raise awareness about the importance of women in society.

A function was also organized at the Women’s College Srinagar, where Jammu and Kashmir Director of Colleges, Dr Yasmeen Ashaee, said that the commemoration of the day is important on its own.

Ashaee remarked that there is a rise in domestic violence in Jammu and Kashmir even as other heinous crimes are also witnessing a surge.

“We should let our daughters be educated and we should make them aware of their legal rights and responsibilities. We should make them responsible and socially productive. We should also teach our girls about equality and equity. A girl should be involved in all the major decisions in her house just like others”, Ashaee as per GNS said.

“There will be no change in society until you change your mind set. As a parent, you should know that education is not only for all-round development but also for all-round empowerment. We are still fighting for equality because, over the years, people have thought that a male is superior to a female. But it will end soon,” she added.

The Deputy Superintendent DYSP, Syed Sleet Shah, who spoke to GNS, extended the warmest greetings to all the women who break the glass ceiling in today’s world, and to the men who support their journey of inclusion and acknowledgement.

In the meantime, a female journalist, pleading anonymity, told GNS that things have changed altogether in Kashmir. “No doubt, media provided me a platform to express myself but also helped me to prove my identity and move beyond victimhood discourse. However, we are living in an era where each and every word of your news item matters,” she said.

When asked about the role that female journalists’ play in Kashmir, she said that “Despite several odds and unstable circumstances, women in journalism are striving hard to emerge as strong personalities on the frontline, as they have been successful in racking up several international accolades and awards for their coverage.

“Being a female journalist in Kashmir is challenging in itself, but female journalists’ continue to work amid the harassment, intimidation, and prejudice of our conservative society,” she added.

Meanwhile the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Manoj Sinha also greeted people on International Women’s day.

“This year’s theme gives us the opportunity to celebrate Women’s invaluable contribution in the making of digital society. It is time to do more to eradicate the gender gap in digital access and make it safer, inclusive and equitable”, Sinha said.

“Women have made an invaluable contribution to the socio-economic development of J&K UT. It is our collective responsibility to encourage their participation at all levels in economic development and create an ecosystem that ensures security, honour and respect of women in society,” he said.

“Let us resolve to redouble efforts for an equitable digital future and Women’s active participation in nation building,” he added. (GNS)

Int’l Women’s Day Special: Breaking Stereotypes, Shahnaza 3 Other Women Run Milk Processing Plant at Udhampur

    [ad_1]

    Suhail Khan

Jammu, Mar 8 (GNS): “Being informed is being empowered. We cannot change our lives by sitting at home,” says Shahnaza, the brain behind the ‘Milk Processing Unit’ at Nadaso Kud Chenani in Udhampur district.

Shahnaza, along with three other women, has proven that with pure passion for work one can be a true inspiration for everyone all around.

Talking exclusively with GNS, Shahnaza said that I live in a place where job opportunities are almost nil, and with the day-to-day increase in financial crisis, I came forward to help my family, and it was Umeed (scheme) which showed me the right direction to fight my hardest battles, and within no time, I had achieved that much, which even I would have never otherwise dreamt of.

She said we sell cheese, Kalari, curd, and milk from the plant, besides we are supplying to different hotels in and around Patnitop, and the unit is easily making a sale of 3 to 4 thousand rupees a day – and is increasing day by day.

Sahahnaza recalls that the initial days were challenging when she alongside her colleagues started to work in a male-dominated society, but slowly things started working smoothly for us and the result is in front of all today.

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, she says that “More than education, you need the willingness to chase your dreams. The rest will follow.”

“Financial independence makes a lot of difference in a woman’s life”, says Shahnaza. (GNS)
