  • Delhi riots: In arson of Muslim woman’s property case, father-son duo convicted

Delhi riots: In arson of Muslim woman’s property case, father-son duo convicted

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A court here has convicted a father-son duo for rioting and arson in a case of the 2020 North East Delhi riots, saying the prosecution proved the charges against them beyond reasonable doubt.

Additional Sessions Judge Pulastya Pramachala was hearing a case against Mithhan Singh and his son Jony Kumar, who were accused of being present in a riotous mob that torched several properties in lane number four of Khajuri Khas on February 25, 2020.

“I find that it is proved beyond doubt against both the accused that they were part of the mob which burnt the property (of complainant Shabana Khatoon)… Thus, they are held guilty of the offences under sections 147 (rioting) 148 (rioting, armed with a deadly weapon) 436 (mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to destroy house, etc.) read with section 149 (every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common object) of the Indian Penal Code and convicted accordingly,” the judge said in an order passed on Monday.

The court posted the matter for filing affidavits on April 19, following which the proceedings on sentencing will commence.

ASJ Pramachala noted the statements of several public witnesses and said it was safe to conclude that an unlawful assembly was formed with the common intention of attacking the properties of a particular community and that the riotous mob engaged in incidents of vandalism and arson.

Regarding the identification of the duo as part of the mob, the judge said none of the public witnesses or residents of the lane, including the complainants, supported the prosecution’s case and refused to identify the accused persons as members of the mob.

The only witnesses who identified both accused as members of the mob were prosecution witnesses Mohd. Tahir and Constable Rohtash, the judge said.

He said Tahir’s testimony was “reliable” to show both accused were out in the lane and that they had joined the riotous mob raising slogans, while Constable Rohtash was the beat officer of the area and saw the duo as part of the mob that torched Khatoon’s property.

The judge said the testimony of the police official could not be discarded because of the absence of the daily diary (DD) entry or a formal report on the incident.

Based on the evidence of the two witnesses, there was “no doubt that both accused persons were part of the mob” that indulged in the incident of arson at Khatoon’s property, the judge said.

The Khajuri Khas police station had registered an FIR against the duo on the basis of Khatoon’s statement. Later, six other complaints were also clubbed with the case.

Lucknow: The Lucknow police have cracked the murder of a woman with the help of a strip of sedatives that were found near the body.

The charred body of the woman was found on a vacant plot in Sarauna village under Sairpur police station area on Thursday.

The two have admitted to the crime during interrogation.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) North, Qasim Abidi, a strip of sedatives was found at the crime scene.

The police took the strips and contacted the wholesale drug stores which sell the sedatives and got a lead about the prime accused.

“In the meantime, another police team found footage in which two youths were seen sitting on an e-rickshaw along with a woman and going towards the Saruana village. The man in the footage was identified by the owner of a medical store,” said the official.

Another CCTV footage surfaced of the same group of youths, who were seen returning from Saruan village but the woman in the previous footage was missing in the photo frame.

Later the police traced Arshad and he disclosed the identity of the woman.

Arshad was the live-in partner of the woman identified as Saba Khan, 20, residing in Adilnagar in Gudumba.

Abidi said Saba was pressuring Arshad to marry her and the latter was unwilling due to his parents’ refusal.

Thereafter, he planned to kill her and gave her an overdose of the sedative on the way to Sarauna village, making her unconscious. Arshad with the help of his aide Mohammed Avesh, killed her and they burnt her body with a lighter.

  • Viral: Man uses Trigonometry power to guess woman’s height, internet hails him

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Though trigonometry is challenging and complicated to grasp, it is unquestionably useful in a variety of real life situations. This branch of mathematics does not have a direct application in everyday life, but it is widely used in a variety of fields such as aviation, science, architecture, and others. Now, a Twitter user has used trigonometry to calculate the height of a woman, unaware that he would become a viral hit. It all started when Twitter user Pallavi Pandey posted an image to her account. The photograph shows her in all black standing in front of a flight of stairs. She captioned the photo, “Guess my height!”

It didn’t take long for people on Twitter to come up with various responses. And one of them took the challenge seriously, answering the question with math. “”Looks like 5′ 4.5″. But now I am curious,” Mr. Nobody, a Twitter user, wrote. He also posted an image of his calculations. Despite the fact that the man dedicated his thought process to estimating her probable height and solving the problem. His response was incorrect, as confirmed by the lady herself. She praised the man’s efforts while revealing that she is much taller than his estimation. “Hats off to you man for your efforts, but I’m way taller… but wow!”

The audience was split in half by the man’s determination to find an answer. “Waah bhai,” one user said, impressed by the man’s serious demeanour. While another expressed dissatisfaction with the man’s mathematical application, he stated, “Report the rate of error in relation to thetha as well as the size of the phone used for scale. If the coordinates of the location and time are known, I believe thetha can be calculated accurately.” After the comments started pouring in, the man explained his method. Take a look here:

  • Kashmir Keeping Rendezvous With Traditional Hokh Syun, The Rural Woman’s Produce

Kashmir Keeping Rendezvous With Traditional Hokh Syun, The Rural Woman’s Produce

    [ad_1]

    by Tazeem Nazir

SRINAGAR: Since antiquity, Kashmir valley’s extremely cold weather conditions have forced the local populace to innovate to compensate for the scarcity of food items as connectivity to the outside world remains cut off for months. The answer to the vegetable crisis in winter was Hokh Syun, the traditional dried vegetables.

Today, when road connectivity has improved drastically in winter, the Hokh Syun hasn’t faded but become intertwined in what is known as Koshur tradition with women folk in Valley’s rural space mainly involved in the production process. The pictures of vegetables hanging from windows of houses and spread on open balconies fulfil the rural landscape and certain pockets of the city as well.

For Jawhara Begum, a middle-aged woman from central Kashmir Budgam district the process of preparing the dried vegetables starts in spring when she sows the seeds in her kitchen garden.

“I plant tomatoes and bottle gourd seeds in April, water them and see them grow. I then wait for these tiny plants to grow and reach full bloom,” Begum says, adding that it gives her the same feeling as raising her own children.

By July, she starts collecting ripe tomatoes and tiny bottle gourds kick starting the process of drying the vegetables.

“I stretch out a piece of cloth on my balcony or rooftop then spread out the vegetables on it. The sun’s heat and light dry them gradually as we step into Autumn.”

However, the process isn’t simple as it might sound. Begum each night has to bring the vegetables inside in order to save them from any moisture during the night time. She also has to keep an eye on birds during the day so that they don’t spoil her treasure which she sells as the winter approaches.

She says that the drying of vegetables is something she likes because indoor household chores are mundane and monotonous. “I like doing this because it is an activity which is done outside the confines of the four walls.”

She says before she contacts the vendors who buy her produce, the vegetables are all dried and ready.

“What gives me happiness is that people far away from my abode consume and enjoy what I nurture in my kitchen garden. I believe I am spreading more than just love and warmth of Kashmir by cultivating and selling these vegetables.”

It is the labour of countless such rural Kashmir’s women folk who are not just keeping the tradition alive but also letting people make a living who are connected to its market chain.

The distributor who purchases the Hokh Syun from Jawhara Begum then sells it to various retailers.

Ghulam Mohiuddin, a Budgam-based Hokh Syun distributor for over 20 years says the trade continues to be profitable for him.

“We serve as a middleman between the producer and the seller of these vegetables. Hokh Syun has been around in Kashmir’s market for decades and people earn well out of it at every level of the chain.”

Fayaz Ahmad, whose shop is nestled in a traditional Zainakadal lane says that the Hokh Syun business has been in the family for many generations now fetching them good money.

“For the past thirty years, I have been selling Hokh Syun. There has always been a high demand. Since we Kashmiris have been consuming it for so long, the demand will never decrease. Every Kashmiri used to dry vegetables at home in the summer to consume them in the winter because there used to be less availability of fresh vegetables in the winter,” Ahmad says.

Mohammad Shafi, another Hokh Syun vendor says that demand had increased not just in the valley but also in other parts of India.

“The profit is decent but varies from product to product. Our source for Hokh Syun is mainly Budgam, Shopian, and Tral. These vegetables and fish are dried at home by villagers, who then sell them to us through these distributors. There have been negative consequence stories which hasn’t hampered our demand. This is a family-owned business that my father was also involved with and I am still carrying it forward,” Shafi said.

The Hokh Syun basket comprises mainly of Alle Hacthi (dried Bottle Gourd) cooked with dried Waangan (Brinjal); sun-dried Gogji Arre (Turnip) cooked with Nadru (Lotus Stem); Bamchoonth (Quince); Rwangan Hatchi (dried Tomatoes), and Hog Gadde (dried Fish).
