It was soon picked up by several others, a majority of whom applauded the achievement, while some also wondered about the practicality of the outfit.

“Kudos to the spirit of the lady to run the marathon. No mean feat by any stretch of imagination. It’s an inefficient choice of clothing to run though could easily have shaved time off and reduced effort in running attire. Each to his/her own,” noted one Twitter user.

Jena enjoys running marathons and has completed other runs around the world over the years. Meanwhile, her choice of garment in Manchester to showcase Indian culture and inspire others to take up running continues to make waves.

“Imagine how fast she would run with normal marathon clothes. Well done,” noted another Twitter user.

The Adidas Manchester Marathon is one of the UK’s premier running events, known for its “fast, flat and friendly” 26.2 mile route.

UP: Man who shot dead woman in broad daylight injured in police firing

    [ad_1]

A day after a 20-year-old woman was shot dead in broad daylight in the Jalaun district of Uttar Pradesh, the accused was injured during police firing on Tuesday night.

On April 17, Roshni Ahirwar, a Bachelor of Arts (BA) student, was returning home after taking a test at her college when two men on a motorbike shot her dead with a handmade gun. They left the murder weapon near her body and fled.

Siasat.com spoke to Jalaun Superintendent of Police Iraj Raja who informed the accused – Raj Ahirwar – is being treated at the Government Medical College, Orai in Jalaun.

    MS Education Academy

“Roshni’s relatives named Raj as the accused in their complaint. When the police went to arrest him, he started firing. In response, we fired back. Raj received two bullet injuries on his back and is currently being treated, ” the SP said.

The senior police officer also told Siasat.com that Raj and Roshni were in a relationship for over a year.

“Since they belonged to the same caste, their families had no objection to their affinity. They were even talks about marriage. However, two months ago, the couple had disagreements after which Roshni decided to break up with Raj,” SP Raja said.

According to the SP, Raj could not digest the breakup and started following Roshni by calling her constantly and through social media. Roshni however tried to ignore Raj’s advances.

Unable to accept that breakup, Raj decided to murder Roshni, the SP said.

Amid reports of Raj’s death in the cross-firing with the police, the SP stated that the former is alive and is being currently treated for his injuries. He also said that the couple were not engaged.

A case under sections 302 (Murder) and 506 (Punishment for criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Roshni’s murder comes days after gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf were shot dead on LIVE television amid police security in Prayagaraj.

The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) also shared the disturbing video clip on Twitter and targeted the UP government. “Will the wolves of Godi media and the BJP also celebrate this death?” the party wrote in the caption, in an apparent swipe at celebratory coverage of Atiq’s murder.

  • Same-sex marriage: Genitals don’t define absolute concept of man or woman, observes SC

Same-sex marriage: Genitals don’t define absolute concept of man or woman, observes SC

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: While hearing a batch of petitions seeking legal sanction to same-sex marriage, the Supreme Court on Tuesday orally observed that there is no absolute concept of a man or a woman and it cannot be only about the genitals, rather it is far more complex.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Centre, submitted before a five-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud that there is a legislative intent that a marriage can only happen between a biological man and a biological woman, including Special Marriage Act.

Chief Justice Chandrachud told Mehta, “Very important judgement you are making. That very notion of a biological man is absolute and the notion of biological woman is also absolute…” Mehta said a biological man is a biological man and it is not a notion.

    MS Education Academy

The Chief Justice said, “There is no absolute concept of a man or a woman at all…it cannot be the definition of what your genitals are, it is far more complex. Even when the Special Marriage Act (SMA) says man and woman, the very notion of a man and notion of a woman is not an absolute, based on what genitals you have….”

During the hearing, Mehta stressed that his preliminary objections against the maintainability of the petitions seeking same-sex marriage should be decided first and added that all states should be issued notices before a decision is made by the top court.

Mehta submitted that the institution of marriage affects personal laws. The Hindu Marriage Act is a codified personal law and Islam has their own personal law, and part of them is not codified. The bench – comprising justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, S. Ravindra Bhat, Hima Kohli, and P.S. Narasimha – replied that it is not getting into personal laws.

Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, representing one of the petitioners seeking recognition of same-sex marriage, submitted that his clients seek a declaration that “we have a right to get married.” The counsel said the state will recognise that right under the Special Marriage Act and the marriage will be recognised by the state after the declaration of this court.

Rohatgi contended that this is because even now we are stigmatised, and this is even after the Article 377 judgment, and that the Special Marriage Act should mention ‘spouse’ instead of man and women.

Senior advocate Rakesh Dwivedi, appearing for one of the parties in the matter opposing same-sex marriages, argued that marriage between man and woman is not a gift of law, but existed since time immemorial and marriages are necessary to perpetuate the human race itself. Dwivedi contended that even SMA has provisions reflective of personal laws and talks about different marriageable age for a man and a woman. How would one reconcile with these (who is man and who is woman)?

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal submitted that he is all for such relationships but is concerned about the societal severe consequences, which may follow after declaration and questioned, what happens if they adopt a child and later want to separate? Who gets maintenance?

Sibal stressed that if piecemeal arrangement is done then it will create more complications, which will hurt the community and in other countries where same-sex marriages were recognised, they overhauled the entire legal framework.

The arguments in the matter will continue after 2 p.m. The Centre has told the Supreme Court that the demand for same-sex marriage is a “mere urban elitist views for the purpose of social acceptance,” and recognising the right of same-sex marriage would mean a virtual judicial rewriting of an entire branch of law.

The Centre’s response came on a batch of petitions challenging certain provisions of the Hindu Marriage Act, Foreign Marriage Act and the Special Marriage Act and other marriage laws as unconstitutional on the ground that they deny same-sex couples the right to marry or alternatively to read these provisions broadly so as to include same-sex marriage.

  • Video: Woman with national flag painted on face denied entry into Golden Temple

Video: Woman with national flag painted on face denied entry into Golden Temple

    [ad_1]

Amritsar: A video has gone viral showing a Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) employee stopping a woman tourist with the national flag tattoo painted on her face from entering the Golden Temple, also known as the Harmandir Sahib.

She claimed that she was denied entry over the tricolour row.

The sewadar, an SGPC employee, who denied her entry, was heard purportedly saying “This is Punjab, not India” when the woman said this was the Indian flag.

    MS Education Academy

In the 40-second video clip, two people accompanying the woman were heard asking the guard “Is the Golden Temple not in India?” On being asked why the woman was not allowed to enter the holy shrine, he pointed out the flag painted on the woman’s face.

The guard also tried to stop the woman and the man accompanying her from capturing the incident on their phone.

Apologising for misbehaviour by its employees towards the visitors, SGPC General Secretary Gurcharan Grewal told the media that this is a Sikh shrine. Every religious place has its own decorum.

“We welcome everyone. We apologise if an official misbehaved. The flag on her face was not our national flag as it didn’t have Ashoka Chakra. It could have been a political flag.”

Slamming the people for criticising the SGPC on the social media, he said, “Don’t these people know that Sikhs have played a great part in India’s Independence? Will anyone tweet about who sacrificed 90 out of 100 heads for the national flag? The Sikhs are being defamed intentionally.”
