Consumer court orders Guwahati cinema hall to pay Rs 60,000 to woman who was bitten by rat

    [ad_1]

Guwahati: A cinema hall in Guwahati was asked by a consumer court to pay Rs 60,000 to a 50-year-old woman, who was bitten by a rat during a movie show.

The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission of Kamrup directed Galleria Cinema in Bhangagarh to pay the woman Rs 40,000 as compensation for mental agony, and Rs 20,000 for pain and suffering, besides reimbursement of medical bill of Rs 2,282 and another Rs 5,000 towards covering the cost of proceedings.

The woman had gone to the hall with her family for the 9 pm show of a movie on October 20, 2018. During the interval, she felt something had bitten her on the foot, and she immediately rushed out after starting to bleed, her lawyer Anita Verma told PTI on Friday.

    MS Education Academy

The cinema hall authorities failed to provide her with any first aid and none of its staff accompanied her to the hospital, she maintained.

“At the hospital, she was kept under observation for two hours as the doctors were initially not sure what had bitten her. She was later treated for rat bite,” Verma added.

She moved the court, seeking compensation of Rs 6 lakh for mental agony, pain and suffering, besides the amount incurred towards her medical treatment and other expenses.

Contesting the allegations, Galleria Cinema said that proper hygiene is maintained within its premise and that they had offered first aid to the woman, which she had refused.

Galleria Cinema urged the court to reject the complaint, and sought a compensatory cost of Rs 15,000.

After hearing the arguments, and taking into consideration the documents submitted by woman and that no evidence could be produced in support of the claims made by the cinema hall, the court ordered the payment of the compensation on April 25.

The cinema hall was negligent in maintaining hygiene for giving proper service to the viewers as required under the Cinematography Act and other obligations, the court said.

The amount is to be paid within 45 days, failing which an interest of 12 per cent per annum will be levied from the date of judgement, it said.

Woman among four Palestinians killed in Israeli raid in Nablus

    [ad_1]

Four Palestinians, including one woman, were killed by the Israeli army on Thursday, during a raid in Nablus, in the northern occupied West Bank, according to Palestinian News Agency.

The four martyrs are identified as— Hassan Qatnani, Moaz al-Masri,  Ibrahim Jabr and woman Iman Ziad Ahmed Odeh.

On Thursday morning, Palestinian Ministry of Health said in a brief statement, that three Palestinians were killed by the occupation bullets, two of whom had completely distorted their features, as a result of the intense shooting at them.

    MS Education Academy

The Israeli forces claimed that two of the three martyrs were responsible for carrying out a shooting attack, in which three Israeli women were killed in April 2023, in the northern Jordan Valley in the West Bank.

Later on Thursday, Palestinian Ministry of Health announced the death of 26-year-old Palestinian woman Iman Ziad Ahmed Odeh, as a result of being shot in the chest on Thursday, by the Israeli forces in Hawara, south of Nablus, in the northern West Bank, claiming that she was attempting to carry out a stabbing attack.

Palestinian Red Crescent reported that four citizens in Nablus were injured by live bullets fired by the occupation forces, in addition to recording 152 cases of suffocation, including school students, as a result of the occupation forces firing tear gas canisters.

Israeli Army Radio reported that more than 200 Israeli soldiers participated in the military operation in Nablus on Thursday.

Palestinian News Agency quoted eyewitnesses as saying that the occupation forces targeted the besieged house with live bullets, fired a number of missiles at it, and prevented medical staff from reaching the besieged area.

With the rise of the four martyrs of Nablus on Thursday, the death toll since the beginning of this year rises to 108, including 20 children and two women.

The figure also includes the 44-year-old Palestinian prisoner Sheikh Khader Adnan, who died on Tuesday on the 87th day of a hunger strike to protest his repeated arbitrary detention.

The death of Adnan, who was arrested on March 5, 2023, pending military trial, sparked widespread anger and protests in the occupied West Bank, and led to rockets being fired at Israel by the armed resistance factions in the besieged Gaza Strip.

    [ad_1]

Chandigarh: Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar’s visit on Wednesday to Thana in Kurukshetra has ensured that government buses now won’t skip the stop at the village.

During an interaction with Thana villagers as part of the ‘Jan Samvad’ programme, an elderly woman complained about buses not stopping there and Khattar took action, according to a government statement.

From now, Khattar said, at least eight buses from Pehowa and Kurukshetra depots would stop in the village and for the convenience of the villagers, the timings of the buses will be mentioned at bus stops.

    MS Education Academy

The chief minister directed the Haryana Roadways general manager, Kurukshetra, to prepare a 12-hour route chart for the buses, and instruct the drivers and conductors to stop the buses on the fixed routes of Thana.

During ‘Jan Samvad’, two village residents told the chief minister that they were charged Rs 20,000-Rs 25,000 for treatment at private hospitals despite being covered under the Ayushman Bharat scheme.

On this, Khattar ordered the civil surgeon, Kurukshetra to investigate the entire matter and take appropriate action.

Pehowa MLA and Minister of State for Printing and Stationery Sandeep Singh also attended the ‘Jan Samvad’ programme.

Interacting with people in Kurukshetra’s Barna village, Khattar said sarpanches must hold meetings of the Gram Sabha once in three months.

Khattar said the ‘Jan Samvad’ programme is the best medium to take feedback from the public and see if the benefits of government policies and schemes are reaching the people.

He also met members of self-help groups (SHGs) in the village.

There are nearly 30 SHGs in Barna.

In Kurukshetra’s Karah Sahib village, the chief minister said public welfare policies will be framed on the basis of suggestions received through ‘Jan Samvad’.

The new policies will be in accordance with the hopes and aspirations of the people, he said.

Khattar started the ‘Jan Samvad’ programme in Rohtak district last year. Later, the programme was organised in Sirsa, Sonipat, Karnal, Fatehabad, Bhiwani and Palwal districts.

His three-day ‘Jan Samvad’ programme in Kurukshetra district concluded on Wednesday.

Gurugram University professor booked for sexually harassing woman colleague

    [ad_1]

Gurugram: A professor at a Gurugram university has been booked for alleged sexual harassment following a complaint by a woman colleague, police said on Monday.

The complainant, an assistant professor, has told the police that Dhirender Kaushik, Dean of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Gurugram University, has been continuously sexually harassing her for the past four months.

Following the complaint, an FIR was registered against Kaushik under sections 354A (sexual harassment), 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code at women police station, Sector 51 on Saturday, police said.

    MS Education Academy

The woman professor has alleged that on April 21 the accused came to her class and started shouting at her.

She alleged that Kaushik pressured her to succumb to his sexual desires and also issued a memo to her for switching class timings.

The complainant also alleged that he tried to physically abuse her when she got late to class once.

When contacted, Kaushik termed the allegations as “baseless”.

He said due to the complainant’s negligence at work, he issued her two show-cause memos.

That is why she was provoked by somebody and she complained, he added.

The complainant said that on April 28 the accused called her to the clerk’s room without any reason and started shouting at her.

“At that time two clerks went out of the room. After that I was alone along with Dr Dhirender in the room. He took advantage of the situation and started molesting me. I was scared and started crying but he blocked the door of the room and did not allow me to go outside. He also threatened me that he would get me terminated,” according to her complaint.

Police said the complainant recorded her statement in court under section 164 in the Code Of Criminal Procedure.

In 2018, Kaushik was also booked by police for sexual harassment when he was an assistant professor at Kurukshetra University, but the complainant later withdrew the allegations.

Subhash Boken, spokesperson of Gurugram Police, said a probe is underway.

Notice will be served to the accused to join the investigation, police said.
