MP: Woman dead, several injured after near-stampede at Rudraksh Mahotsav

    [ad_1]

Bhopal: A woman died and several others were injured after a “stampede-like situation” at the Rudraksh Mahotsav organised by ‘godman’ and spiritual preacher Pradeep Mishra in Madhya Pradesh’s Sehore district on Thursday, police said.

At least three women were also reported missing from the spot.

The two-day Rudraksh Mahotsav began on Thursday at Kubereshwar Dham in Sehore – the home district of Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, and a large number of people from different districts of the state as well from neighbouring Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, and Rajasthan gathered the to receive Rudraksha beads.

The woman who died has been identified as Manglaa Bai, 50, of Maharashtra.

“Mangala Bai, a resident of Malegaon in Nashik district of Maharashtra, suddenly fell ill, fell down, and died. Three women from Bhilai in Chhattisgarh, Gangapur in Rajasthan and Buldhana in Maharashtra went missing and the family members have filed complaints at the police station,” Mandi police station ASI Dharam Singh Verma said.

The arrival of more than expected people has not only disturbed the arrangement at the venue but also created long hours of traffic snarls on several roads connecting to Sehore. As per the police, over 20,000 vehicles were stuck in a traffic jam on the Indore-Bhopal highway since early on Thursday.

Vipin Kumar, who was going to Sehore, told IANS on Thursday night that he was stuck on traffic since morning. “Police personnel were trying hard to clear traffic, but the situation was pathetic due to heavy crowed and a large number of vehicles on road. Families with little children were stuck and many of them fell ill due to unavailability of water,” he said over phone.

According to police and district administration officials, over five lakh people reached Kubeshwar dham to collect Rudraksh being distributed by Mishra.

Mishra, meanwhile, accused the administration of mismanagement. “People are afraid of death. They said they will not go to Kedarnath. It is very cold there, what if something happens. If death has to come, it will come so people shouldn’t be afraid of death,” he said.

Chouhan was also about to visit the programme but cancelled it after news of the chaos.

  • Brussels contacts Sweden over plans to deport British woman with Alzheimer’s

Brussels contacts Sweden over plans to deport British woman with Alzheimer’s

    [ad_1]

The European Commission has contacted the Swedish authorities after it emerged they were planning to deport a 74-year-old British woman with severe Alzheimer’s because she did not have her post-Brexit paperwork in order.

At the same time, the office of the foreign secretary, James Cleverly, is trying to ascertain the exact circumstances that have led to the removal threat faced by Kathleen Poole, who cannot speak, walk or feed herself and is bedbound in a care home.

Fears that the authorities in Sweden may carry out the threat to deport Poole were fuelled after the police got in touch with the Swedish embassy with a “formal request” for a travel document for her.

Poole’s son, Wayne, said he was concerned that if he applied for a new passport for her it would make inevitable and speed up the deportation process, which he was trying to delay in the hope someone steps in to save his mother.

“I am just exhausted by all of this,” he said. “The whole thing is draining. The hope is always there and we will do whatever we can to stop it.”

The British embassy has now told him “they are legally obliged to issue travel documents after the police request without your consent”, according to an official.

Poole said he doubts the police would be able to get his mother on a plane because of the huge logistics involved. She cannot walk and needs a hoist to be moved from her bed to a wheelchair in the care home.

“It is just not right,” he said.

The case has been described as “shocking” by Labour MP and former Brexit select committee chair Hilary Benn, who on Monday called on both London and Brussels “to put a stop to the deportation of a vulnerable British citizen”.

A spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said: “We are aware of this case and looking for any ways to make progress for the family.”

It is also understood that the foreign minister David Rutley, the MP for Macclesfield where Kathleen Poole is originally from, has also been in touch with her family to offer support.

Poole and her late husband sold up and bought a new home in Sweden 18 years ago to be close to her son and Swedish daughter-in-law and four young grandchildren. She developed Alzheimer’s at 63 and has been in a care home for the past 10 years.

She had permanent residency in Sweden but was required to renew that paperwork post-Brexit.

The application made by her family on her behalf was rejected on the grounds that her passport was not up to date and there was no financial paperwork showing she was self-sufficient.

Angelica Poole, Kathleen’s daughter-in-law, said they appealed against the decision, explaining that the 74-year-old was incapacitated, bedbound and did not update her passport because “she wasn’t going anywhere”.

They were shocked when the police turned up at the care home to make an inventory of her wardrobe and personal belongings.

The European Commission said it could not comment on individual cases but added: “We are aware of this case and are in touch with the Swedish authorities.”

A spokesperson said that protections were put in place to protect UK citizens who had been lawfully in an EU member state before Brexit happened.

They said: “The withdrawal agreement has robust safeguards that ensure that any refusal must be proportionate and appealable to an independent domestic court.”

The treaty “protects those UK nationals who resided in an EU member state according with EU law before the transition period and who continue to reside there in accordance with the withdrawal agreement”, the spokesperson added.

The Swedish government has been contacted for a response, but said “by law” it was not allowed to comment on individual cases.

Delhi man murders girlfriend to marry another woman, stuffs body in dhaba’s fridge

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: In a horrific incident, a Delhi man murdered his girlfriend after an argument over his impending marriage to someone else, stuffed her body in a refrigerator at his dhaba, and went on with his wedding the same day, police said on Tuesday.

Accused Sail Gehlot was arrested after the body of a woman, a resident of Haryana’s Jhajjar, was found inside a fridge at a dhaba, owned by him, on the outskirts of village Mitraon in Delhi.

According to police, on February 10, an inputs were received that a person named Sahil had killed his girlfriend and married another girl on the day of murder.

“A police team was formed and on checking, no case or complaint about any missing girl was found reported. The team reached Mitraon village in search of the accused Gehlot, but his mobile phone was found switched off and he was not present in his house. Intensive search was made in the village and nearby area,” Special Commissioner of Police, Crime, Ravindra Singh Yadav said.

However, Gehlot was nabbed by police from Kair village crossing.

“On interrogation, initially, the accused tried to mislead the police. But on sustained interrogation, he disclosed that he had killed his girlfriend, Nikki Yadav, in the intervening night of February 9 and 10 Feb and kept her dead body in a refrigerator at his dhaba in a vacant plot situated on the outskirts of village Mitraon,” Yadav said.

Sahil Gehlot further disclosed that in 2018, he met the woman at a coaching centre in Uttam Nagar area of west Delhi where he had joined to prepare for SSC exams.

“At that time, Nikki was also preparing for a medical entrance examination in Akash Institute at Uttam Nagar. Both used to travel to their respective institutes daily in the same bus, and they became friends, and later on fell in love,” said the Special CP.

“The duo started meeting before and after the coaching classes. In February 2018 the accused took admission in D. Pharma in Galgotia College at Greater Noida and she also took admission in the same college in BA (English Hons.). Thereafter, both of them started living together at Greater Noida in a rented house. They became very close to each other and also travelled to several places such as Manali, Rishikesh, Haridwar, Dehradun etc,” said the official.

However, during Covid-19 pandemic lockdown, they returned to their homes and after the end of the lockdown, they again started living together in a rented house in Dwarka area.

“The accused did not inform his family members about this relationship. His family was putting pressure on him to get married with some other girl and finally in December 2022, engagement and marriage of the accused with another girl were fixed for February 9 and 10,” the Special CP said.

Gehlot did not inform Nikki about his engagement or marriage plans. “Somehow she came to know about this and confronted the accused and arguments started between the two. The accused strangulated the deceased with the help of a data cable of his mobile phone kept in his car. Thereafter, he went to the dhaba owned by him and put her dead body in a refrigerator,” he said, adding that Gehlot then went back to his home and solemnised his marriage with another woman.

“The dead body of Nikki was recovered from the fridge at the instance of the accused. A case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code has been registered and the version disclosed by the accused is being verified during investigation,” said the official.

  • Woman facilitating rape can be prosecuted for ‘gang rape’: Allahabad HC

Woman facilitating rape can be prosecuted for ‘gang rape’: Allahabad HC

    [ad_1]

Prayagraj: The Allahabad High Court has observed that “no doubt a woman cannot commit the offence of rape but if she facilitates the act then she can be prosecuted for the offence of ‘gang rape’ under section 376D of Indian Penal Code (IPC) in view of the amended provisions”.

Elaborating the provisions of section 375 (rape) and 376 (punishment for rape) of the IPC relating to the offence of rape, as amended in the year 2013, Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav rejected the plea that a woman cannot be prosecuted for the alleged commission of the offence of gang rape.

With these observations, the court dismissed an application filed under section 482 (inherent powers of high court) of criminal procedure code (CrPC) filed by one Sunita Pandey, who had challenged a summoning order passed by the additional district and sessions judge, Siddharth Nagar, to face trial under sections 376D (gang rape), 212 (harbouring offender) of IPC in connection with the alleged rape case of a 15-year-old girl.

“A woman can not commit the offence of rape but if she facilitated the act of rape with a group of people then she may be prosecuted for gang rape in view of the amended provisions,” observed the court while rejecting the plea of the woman applicant.

Taking into account the facts of the case, the court, at the outset, noted that the argument that a woman cannot be prosecuted for gang rape is not correct as per the amended provisions of sections related to rape, which relates to the offence of rape.

The court observed that though it is clear by the non-ambiguous language of section 375 of IPC that a woman cannot commit rape as the section specifically states that the act of rape can only be done by a ‘man’ and not by ‘a woman’, the same is not the case with section 376D (gang rape) of IPC.

The incident took place in June 2015 and FIR was lodged by the father of the girl against unknown persons in July 2015 under sections 363 (punishment for kidnapping) and 366 (kidnapping, abduction or inducing woman to compel her marriage, etc.) IPC, alleging therein that someone had enticed his daughter aged about 15 years, and took her with him.

In her statement before the court under section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code, the victim stated that the applicant was involved in the alleged incident. However, the applicant was not named in the charge sheet.

Thereafter, the father of the victim filed an application under section 319 CrPC for summoning the applicant and the court below allowed the said plea.

Turkey earthquake: 19-yr-old woman saves her family from being crushed

    [ad_1]

The presence of mind of a 19-year-old woman from the Turkish city of Antakya, saved her entire family from being crushed under the rubble of the two powerful earthquakes that hit Turkey and Syria on Monday, February 6, killing more than 26,000 people.

Umit Aslanoglu, got up from bed when her dog “Suzi” got restless and barked into the corridor at night.

Aslanoglu, who felt the first tremor of the earthquake within seconds, immediately woke up her mother, brother and aunt, according to Anadolu Agency.

Meanwhile, seeing the surrounding buildings destroyed, Aslanoglu jumps from the balcony onto the piles of rubble to help her brother and aunt to get out of the house.

As the building shakes with the aftershocks, she returns to save her mother and dog at great risk of her own life.

“At that time, the building already fell on us. The piles of rubble hit my waist. I pushed the rubble somehow, I got up. Our only way out was jumping from the balcony,” she told Anadolu.

The family managed to escape to the northern province of Trabzon, where they sought shelter at a relative’s house.

More than 27,000 people were killed and 85,000 injured in two powerful earthquakes that rocked southern Turkey Monday, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Saturday.

Search and rescue efforts continue in areas where people were pulled alive from the rubble after the earthquakes that lasted for more than 100 hours.

With Doctor On Video Call, Paramedics Help Woman Deliver Baby

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Paramedics in the Keran area of north Kashmir’s frontier Kupwara district have managed a delivery of a baby without a gynaecologist, in a 3 Idiots style. Both mother and baby are safe.

Quoting Block Medical Officer (BMO) Kralpora Dr M Shafi news agency KNO reported that on Friday, an expecting mother from the Kalas Keran area with labour pain was brought to Primary Health Centre (PHC) Keran where there was no gynaecologist posted.

“We tried to shift the patient to Kralpora but the inclement weather didn’t allow us to do so,” he said. “Even due to continuous snowfall, we were unable to take the patient to any other hospital.”

Given the circumstances, the BMO said the gynaecologist of Kralpora PHC motivated the paramedical staff at PHC Keran through a WhatsApp call and asked them to manage her delivery.

The staff was earlier a bit reluctant; however, after motivating them, they managed the delivery quite normally, he said.

Both baby and mother are fine and have been discharged, the BMO said. “This is not the first time that we have managed the emergency patients in this way and Keran being at high altitude faces such issues frequently.”

  • Opinion | Nikki Haley’s Woman Problem

Opinion | Nikki Haley’s Woman Problem

    [ad_1]

Haley could very likely have it worse than the candidates did in 2016, encountering a veritable buzz saw of sexist and racist attacks from the moment she declares her presidential run. That’s because the base of the Republican Party, the most rabid and committed primary voters, has become more male and more far-right since Trump became the party standard bearer. Misogynist ideology and hate has proliferated so much among in recent years that the Southern Poverty Law Center has begun tracking “Male Supremacy” groups. Groups like the Oath Keepers and Proud Boys that supported Trump and have seen members convicted of seditious conspiracy for involvement in the January 6th insurrection on the Capitol are also rabidly anti-woman. Proud Boys founder Gavin McInnes told listeners on his podcast that, “Maybe the reason I’m sexist is because women are dumb.” Avowed White Supremacist Nick Fuentes, who dined recently with Trump at Mar-A-Lago, has told followers that his ideal world is one where the “women don’t have the right to vote,” one in which “women are wearing veils at church,” and “women [aren’t] in the workforce.”

In another era these extremists could be safely relegated to the political margins, but today they are playing a more central role than ever. While Kevin McCarthy and some other Republican leaders have condemned Fuentes, Trump himself refused to disavow him and dozens of lawmakers refused to comment about it either way. Fox News host Tucker Carlson, who continues to enjoy some of the highest ratings in cable TV, has used his considerable platform to launch racist and sexist attacks that have become more overt and more vitriolic in the last few years.

Of course, Trump, as the only declared Republican presidential candidate, looms large. He built his base on attacking women, particularly women of color. From endlessly debasing women journalists, political leaders and public figures who have criticized him to his braggadocio on the “Access Hollywood” tapes and racist rants against Secretary Elaine Chao Trump has never tried to hide his distain in even minimal veneer. He even brought Roger Ailes, who before his death in 2017 had been accused of sexual harassment by at least 20 women, on as an adviser to his campaign and appointed Bill Shine, who was accused of covering up sexual harassment during his time at Fox News, as White House communications director. Researchers found that in the 2016 election “hostile sexism” was a primary predictor of support for Trump, second only to party affiliation.

Astonishingly, it’s not just Trump or right-wing extremist men that push sexist ideology in the Republican Party. Congresswomen Marjorie Taylor Greene and Lauren Boebert have both embraced anti-feminism, despite their own career ambitions. It’s a trend that’s not especially new. Phyllis Schlafly, who was among the first prominent conservative women to back Trump when he ran for president, successfully fought passage of the Equal Rights Amendment, and railed against equal rights for women even as she was benefiting from the system she fought. But these attitudes pose a particularly significant threat today because so many of the figures most at ease with hostile sexism now hold positions of real power in the Republican Party. Lauren Boebert may be a back bencher, but she was part of the crew that held McCarthy’s speaker vote hostage. She told the Denver Post that she believes “women are the lesser vessel, and we need masculinity in our lives to balance that.” Taylor Greene, who now holds leadership positions on Congressional committees and is vying to be Trump’s running mate in ’24, told an interviewer that Satan was manipulating women into having abortions.

Haley faces a high hurdle in even convincing Republican voters that a woman can be president. A December 2022 USA Today poll revealed just how challenging gender is in Republican politics. Overall, a majority of voters (55 percent) say that gender doesn’t matter in presidential elections. Those who did have a preference chose a male president by more than 2-1, 28 percent-12 percent.

Among Republicans, 50 percent said the ideal president would be male while a paltry 2 percent said she would be female. In contrast, Democrats with a preference chose a woman over a man by 2-1, 24 percent-11 percent. Among those voters with a preference, men by 8-1 preferred a male president over a female one, 32 percent-4 percent. Even women were somewhat more likely to prefer a male president (25 percent-19 percent).

Politics is as much about time and place as it is about talent. And in this time and place, the hurdles for a woman in the Republican Party are exceptionally high. Whether we agree with Haley’s positions or not, we should all root for a level political playing field that stays in the bounds of decency and civility. Unfortunately, in today’s Republican political reality, the chances that happens are slim to none.

Turkey earthquake: Woman refuses to step out without hijab from under rubble

    [ad_1]

A Turkish woman refused to get out from under the rubble of her family’s house destroyed by the devastating earthquakes on Monday in the city of Gaziantep, without her headscarf.

While the rescue teams were trying to rescue the mother and her three children, the woman demanded that she be provided with a headscarf.

The woman was given a headscarf after which she stepped out, covering her head. She crawled on her knees and hands with the help of rescuers, who were trying to calm her down the whole time after fulfilling her wish.

A rescuer can be heard saying “Aunty, I love your emaan!”

The rescue team carried the woman on a medical crane amid chants of Takbeer and loud applause.

Victims of the two earthquakes of magnitude 7.7 and 7.6 that hit southern Turkey and northern Syria, on Monday, reached 29,789 with over 98,685 being injured.

While rescue teams continue searching for survivors under the rubble of demolished buildings, the total number of earthquake victims in Turkey has risen to 24,600 deaths and 93,000 injured.
