Indian not allowed to bring pregnant Sudanese wife home, cries for help

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: An Indian national in crisis-torn Sudan has been left in a spot after the Indian mission in Khartoum approved his evacuation request but left behind his pregnant wife who is a Sudanese national.

Boby Sebastian from Kottayam, Kerala, has been working in Khartoum for the past three years, and is married to Sudanese national Hala Muawia Mohamed Abuzaid.

“Due to current unrest in the country and deadly situation we registered evacuation request to (the) Indian Embassy in Khartoum,” Sebastian wrote in a message posted by author and migrant rights activist Rejimon Kuttappan on his social media.

    MS Education Academy

“The evacuation request was successful for me but unfortunately, my wife was not listed on the selected names… I feel it is very unsafe and dangerous to leave her here (Sudan), and also she is conceiving,” the message read.

Sebastian’s Sudanese wife does not have a valid Indian visa or an OCI card at the moment.

According to Kuttappan, the couple has marriage documents, and the wife has also visited Kerala in the past.

Sebastian has requested the relevant Indian authorities to intervene, saying that there isn’t “enough time to obtain a valid Indian visa” for his wife.

Responding to Kuttappan’s tweet, Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram, Shashi Tharoor said that he is now in direct touch with Sebastian, and has contacted External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s office for an emergency evacuation.

“I am in touch with him directly in Khartoum and have contacted @DrSjaishankar’s office to arrange for an emergency evacuation on a temporary permit till her OCI card can be processed,” Tharoor wrote in response to the tweet.

“MEA (Ministry of External Affairs) will probably need to coordinate with MHA (Ministry of Home Affairs) to get this done. My sympathies are with him,” Tharoor wrote.

There are approximately 4,000 Indian citizens in Sudan, and according to the Indian Embassy in Khartoum, about 1,500 of them are longtime residents.

Albert Augustine, a 48 year-old former Indian serviceman, was recently killed by a stray bullet in Sudan.

Jaishankar assured Indians trapped in Sudan that the government was making all-out efforts to get them to safety.

“Our team in Delhi is in continuous touch with Indian citizens in Sudan, advising them saying, you know, ‘It’s very difficult for everybody, but keep calm, don’t take unnecessary risk’,” he said.

Violent clashes that erupted between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces on April 15, continues unabated.

According to Sudan’s Health Ministry, the violence has left at least 424 people dead and about 3,730 wounded.

Last week, the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) said the ongoing heavy fighting is putting tens of thousands of pregnant women in danger, making it too perilous to venture outside their homes to seek urgent medical care.

UNFPA estimates that there are 219,000 pregnant women in the capital city of Khartoum, the epicentre of the violence, with 24,000 of them expected to give birth in the coming weeks.

The unrest has made it extremely difficult for women to seek essential antenatal care, safe delivery services, or postnatal care, the UN agency added.

  • Atiq Ahmad’s wife Shaista Parveen still in BSP, says party leader Uma Shankar

Atiq Ahmad’s wife Shaista Parveen still in BSP, says party leader Uma Shankar

    [ad_1]

Ballia: Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Uma Shankar Singh on Sunday said Shaista Parveen, the wife of slain gangster-politician Atiq Ahmad, is still in the party and has not been expelled from it.

Speaking to reporters here, Singh — the lone BSP MLA in the 403-member UP Legislative Assembly — said, “Shaista Parveen, wife of Atiq Ahmad, is still in the party. She has not been expelled from the party. She is not occupying any post in the party. If she is convicted, she will be expelled from the party. She is yet to be convicted. The party is sympathetic towards her.”

To a question that the BSP has been termed as BJP’s “B-Team” by Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, he said, “Akhilesh Yadav does not have any issue except defaming the BSP.”

    MS Education Academy

On April 10, BSP chief Mayawati had said her party will not field gangster Ahmad’s wife Parveen or any other member of his family in the mayoral election in Prayagraj.

Parveen had joined the BSP in the presence of its senior leaders on January 5, and was reportedly being considered as the party’s mayoral candidate for Prayagraj.

The urban local body elections will be held in the state on May 4 and 11.

“As far as Shaista Parveen is concerned, I would like to make it clear that as per the facts emerging from media reports regarding the Umesh Pal murder case, as soon as the name of Atiq’s wife emerged and after she has gone underground, the situation has changed,” Mayawati had told reporters.

“In this scenario, our party will now not give the mayoral ticket to Atiq’s wife, nor to any member of his family,” she had said.

The BSP chief had also said, “As far as the question of keeping Atiq’s wife in the party is concerned, a decision will be taken soon from the facts that emerge after she lands in the police net.”

On March 13, BSP leader Uma Shankar Singh, who is also the Leader of the party in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly, had come out in support of Parveen, saying the police’s cash reward for information on her is an attempt “to divert attention” from its failure in solving the Umesh Pal murder case.

The Rasra MLA had said, “Shaista Parveen has no relation, even remotely, with the murder case. Even the police have not been able to prove it. She is a social person.”

“Shaista Parveen is all set to become the mayor of Prayagraj and the BJP is going to lose the seat. This is the (reason) behind the BJP’s fury,” Singh had said, and stressed that BSP chief Mayawati has already announced that action will be taken against Parveen if the allegations against her are proven.

“We still stand by that. If the allegation is proven, Shaista Parveen will be expelled from the party. The BSP never compromises on matters of crime,” Singh had said.

Umesh Pal and his two police security guards were shot dead on February 24 outside his home in Prayagraj’s Dhoomanganj area.

Based on a complaint lodged by Umesh Pal’s wife Jaya Pal, a case was registered on February 25 against Atiq Ahmad, his brother Ashraf, wife Parveen, two sons, aides Guddu Muslim and Ghulam, and nine others.

On March 28, an MP/MLA court held Atiq Ahmad and two others guilty in the 2006 Umesh Pal kidnapping case and sentenced them to life imprisonment. That was Ahmad’s first conviction even though more than 100 cases had been registered against him.

The 60-year-old former Samajwadi Party MP was brought from Sabarmati Jail in Gujarat by road for hearing in the case in Prayagraj.

On April 15, Atiq Ahmad (60) and his brother Ashraf were shot dead at point-blank range by three men posing as journalists in the middle of a media interaction on Saturday night while police personnel were escorting them to a medical college here for a checkup.

Akal Takht Jathedar, SGPC criticise authorities for stopping Amritpal’s wife at airport

    [ad_1]

Amritsar: The Akal Takht Jathedar and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee on Friday criticises the authorities for stopping fugitive radical preacher Amritpal Singh’s wife Kirandeep Kaur at an airport here from boarding a flight to the UK.

In a video statement issued here, Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh said that stopping Kaur at an airport in Amritsar was not right from any angle as she was headed to her parental home.

Governments shouldn’t create an atmosphere of panic in the region and Kaur should not have been stopped, said the Jathedar of Akal Takht, which is the supreme temporal seat of the Sikhs.

    MS Education Academy

Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), the apex religious body of the Sikhs, also condemned the act of stopping Kaur at the international airport.

SGPC chief Harjinder Singh Dhami alleged that the Punjab government and the police administration are creating an atmosphere of terror among the youth.

Kaur was stopped from boarding a flight to London at the Sri Guru Ram Dass International Airport here on Thursday.

She was questioned by the immigration authorities and some other officials for more than three hours and thereafter, asked to return along with some relatives who had come to see her off at the airport.

Police had visited Kaur’s house numerous times earlier as well and questioned her and her family, Singh said.

“Moreover, she is a British national. She didn’t commit any crime and if the government wants to ask or enquire anything from her, they should respectfully visit her residence,” said the Akal Takht Jathedar.

Dhami, in a statement, said that the history of Punjab is of protecting and respecting the daughters and sisters, “but it is not right for the present government to stop daughters like this while suspecting them”.

“Such acts do not suit the government which disrespects the beliefs of Punjab,” he said.

Dhami said that it is the right of every citizen to visit their family and go anywhere.

“Detaining someone without charge is a direct violation of human rights and the government should avoid such acts,” he said.

Singh married Kaur, a UK-based Non-Resident Indian, on February 10.

Kaur, who is a British citizen, reached the airport at around noon to board the flight to London but was stopped by the immigration staff and later, the Punjab Police was informed.

More than a month after a police crackdown against Amritpal Singh and his aides, the radical preacher continues to remain elusive even as a manhunt to nab him is underway.

Police launched the crackdown against Singh and members of his outfit ‘Waris Punjab De’ on March 18.

He and his associates were booked under several criminal cases related to spreading disharmony among classes, attempt to murder, attack on police personnel and creating obstructions in the lawful discharge of duty by public servants.

Singh got married to Kaur in a simple ceremony at Jallupur Khera, his native village in Amritsar.

The ‘Anand Karaj’ (marriage as per Sikh rituals) was held with a limited gathering of family members from both sides at a gurdwara in Baba Bakala in Amritsar.

  • Efforts to arrest Atiq’s wife, Ashraf’s brother-in-law intensify

Efforts to arrest Atiq’s wife, Ashraf’s brother-in-law intensify

    [ad_1]

Prayagraj: The Uttar Pradesh Police and the Special Task Force (STF) have intensified efforts to arrest Shaista Parveen, widow of slain gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad, and Saddam, brother-in-law of Ashraf whose was also gunned down with Atiq on April 15.

Police teams are carrying out raids in localities and villages of Prayagraj and neighbouring Kaushambhi district, in all known possible hideouts, including the houses of their kin.

Police officials believe that with the murders of Atiq and his younger brother Ashraf, as well as death of Atiq’s son Asad Ahmad in an encounter with the STF in Jhansi on April 13, Shaista remains the only one who could shed more light on the planning and execution of February 24 killings of lawyer Umesh Pal and his two police guards.

    MS Education Academy

Named as an accused in Umesh Pal murder case, Shaista has been on the run since the February 24 murder.

She carries a Rs 50,000 reward on her head.

Shaista did not attend the funerals of her son Asad on April 15 as well as of her husband and brother-in-law held at Kasari Masari graveyard on April 16.

According to a senior police official: “During the past 48 hours, raids have been carried out by police teams in search of Shaista Parveen at Baretha, Mariyadeeh, and Hatwa areas of Kaushambhi district, along with Rajruppur, Chakia, Kasari Masari, and Bamrauli areas of Prayagraj. Even the house of Shaista’s father Mohd Haroon has been searched in Kasari Masari area of Prayagraj.”

Several close relatives are also being questioned about her whereabouts, he added.

Sources claim that Shaista was last seen in Prayagraj in a commercial car and the police are also reaching out to the owners of travel agencies to find out if they have any leads.

Police officials claim that Shaista played a vital part in the conspiracy to eliminate Umesh Pal and has been managing Atiq’s financial affairs since he was jailed.

“Shaista procured the licences for three weapons — including a sophisticated rifle and two pistols — in her name using fake address with the help of Atiq’s connections without even having to go for the mandatory test firing required before being issued a weapon license,” said a police officer.

This has led to the first three cases being registered against her at Colonelganj police station in 2009 under different relevant sections of IPC and Arms Act, the official added.

According to police, Shaista started actively managing her husband’s empire after Atiq went to jail in February 2017. She was even video-recorded walking along with Atiq’s known henchmen in city.

She also started making inroads in political corridors soon after.

Police claim that at the behest of Atiq, she used to collect extortion money from builders and other traders.

She gave the money extorted through such sources to assailants involved in the murder of Umesh Pal and his two police guards.

While conducting raids to nab Shaista post February 24 murders, police even recovered cash worth Rs 72 lakh that she had allegedly given to her servant Rakesh to hide, said a police officer.

Apart from the three cases (dating back to 2009) lodged in connection with procuring weapons illegally, Shaista also has a fourth case registered against her on February 24 at Dhoomanganj police station under relevant sections of IPC which relates to gunning down of mesh Pal and his two police guards in Sulem Sarai locality of Prayagraj.
