Donald Trump expects to be arrested on next week on Tuesday

Washington: Saying that he expects to be arrested next week on Tuesday, former US President Donald Trump on Saturday urged his supporters to launch mass protests, the media reported.

In a post on Truth Social, the former US President wrote that “illegal leaks” from the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office indicate that he “will be arrested on Tuesday of next week”, Xinhua news agency reported.

“Take our nation back,” Trump said, issuing a call for his supporters to protest.

The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office is reportedly investigating whether Trump falsified business records in connection with an alleged hush-money payment made to an adult film star during the 2016 presidential campaign.

Trump’s lawyer has said he has no plans to participate in the probe, and the Republican, who served as US president from January 2017 to January 2021, has denounced the investigation as a witch hunt.

The case in question is one of several cases in which the 76-year-old is currently being investigated, although he has not yet been charged in any and denies wrongdoing in each, the BBC reported.

His lawyer, however, said there had been no communication from law enforcement (regarding the arrest), and the former president’s post was based on media reports, the BBC reported.

Prosecutors have been looking at a possible indictment of Trump with reports suggesting it could come next week.

If he is indicted, it would be the first criminal case ever brought against a former US president.

Trump has pledged to continue his campaign to become the Republican nominee in the 2024 presidential election, even if he is indicted.

China’s Xi to visit Putin in Russia next week

    [ad_1]

Chinese President Xi Jinping will pay a three-day visit to his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin next week, Beijing and Moscow announced Friday, with “strategic cooperation” on the agenda.

“On March 20-22, 2023, at the invitation of Vladimir Putin, president of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping will pay a state visit to Russia,” the Kremlin’s press service said in a statement.

“A number of important bilateral documents will be signed,” the statement reads.

Neither country confirmed previous reports from the Wall Street Journal that Xi would use the opportunity to call Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy — in what would be the first communication between the two leaders since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine last February.

While China was initially committed to a “no-limit partnership” passed with Moscow days before the beginning of the war in Ukraine, Beijing has since sought to position itself as a peace broker, introducing a 12-point plan for peace.

Yet, Beijing’s attempts have drawn criticism from Western leaders. China, they said, is anything but neutral in the war, and thus not a good fit to be playing the arbiter.

China has been accused by the U.S. of delivering non-lethal “support” to Russia — and, according to exclusive customs data obtained by POLITICO, Chinese companies shipped more than 1,000 assault rifles, drone parts and body armor to Russian entities between June and December of last year.

  • World Glaucoma Week: DHSK conducts screening for non-communicable diseases at Gousia Hospital Khanyar, 29 patients diagnosed wit

DHSK urges citizens to take preventive measures against chronic diseases

    Rehan Qayoom Mir

Srinagar, Mar 13 (GNS): In sync with the ongoing Glaucoma Week, a screening camp for non-communicable diseases was on Monday held at Government Gousia Hospital Khanyar, during which 29 patients were diagnosed with diabetes.

To overlook the ongoing celebrations, Director Health Services Kashmir Dr. Mushtaq Ahmad Rather visited Government Gousia Hospital Khanyar Srinagar – where he assessed a screening camp conducted for non-communicable diseases.

Talking to media on the sidelines of the event, Dr. Mushtaq Ahmad Rather, as per GNS said, that in a significant move towards the prevention and management of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), the Government of India’s HNCD program has initiated screening in all district hospitals for people of all age groups. “The screenings aim to identify individuals who may be at risk for chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension.”

Citing reports, Rather said that out of the 550 patients screened at Gousia Hospital, 29 were diagnosed with high blood sugar levels, indicating that they are at a good percentage of fighting the disease. “This is in line with the national average, which reports that 12-13% of the population is diabetic,” he said.

“It is crucial for people to change their lifestyle as no other option is left now. They need to exercise, work on their fitness, and reduce the consumption of salt, sugar, and other harmful elements,” said the Director of Health, emphasizing the need for people to take preventive measures seriously.

“The rise of chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes is becoming a concern across India, prompting the government to initiate the NCB program. The aim is to educate people on how to remain healthy and enjoy a better quality of life.”

Talking about the outbreak of seasonal influenza on the rise, the Director urged people to take all the necessary precautions and use masks to protect themselves from the virus.”

He advised those experiencing influenza symptoms to drink hot water and consult a doctor immediately.

“We have taken preventive measures, and if anybody among us feels symptomatic, they should consult a doctor. Otherwise, there is no need to worry, taking proper prevention can cure anyone,” he reassured.

“This initiative by the HNCD program is a step in the right direction towards creating awareness and promoting preventive measures for NCDs. With such screenings becoming more common, early detection and management of these diseases could save lives and improve the health of the nation,” he added. (GNS)

Saudi Arabia consider switching to four-day working week

    [ad_1]

Riyadh: The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) is the latest in a long list of countries considering switching a four-day working week and a three-day weekend system in the country, local media reported.

This came in response to an inquiry on Twitter, Saudi Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development clarified it is studying the possibility of extending the weekly leave for three days instead of two.

According to Arabic daily Al Madina, the ministry is studying the current labor system through a periodic review to achieve an increase in job creation and raise the market’s attractiveness for local and international investments.

It also explained that the draft labor system was put forward in an investigative platform for public consultation.

Currently, the Kingdom applies a system of 5 working days and two days off per week, which is Friday and Saturday.

On February 17, 2022, Saudi Ministry of Human Resources has denied the plans to change the weekly working hours to four working days and three days weekend.

Saad Al Hammad, spokesperson for the ministry said in a statement, “There is no truth to what has been circulated in the media about the ministry’s intention to study the issue of reducing working days.”

It is noteworthy that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is the first Gulf country to implement the 4-day work week system, while Bahrain and Oman is studying the implementation of the system.

Tenth week in a row, thousands of Israelis protest against judicial reforms

    [ad_1]

For the tenth consecutive week, thousands of Israelis protested on Saturday against the judicial reforms that the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu intends to implement.

The protestors accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of his far-right extremist views, including racism and trying to establish a dictatorship.

According to Israel TV Channel 12, Tel Aviv saw 1,45,000 protesters while Haifa and Beersheba registered 50,000 and 10,000 respectively. Three demonstrators were arrested by the Tel Aviv police.

In the early morning, car convoys of protestors drove to Ben Gurion Airport to block land roads for Netanyahu who arrived in Rome by helicopter.

“It’s not a judicial reform. It’s a revolution that (is) making Israel go to full dictatorship and I want Israel to stay a democracy for my kids,” Tamir Guytsabri, 58, who was one of the protestors.

Why are Israelis protesting against judicial reforms?

Netanyahu was elected in November 2022 as the Prime Minister for the sixth time. His cabinet is considered the most extreme, nationalistic, and exclusionary government in Israel’s history.

From the beginning, the Israeli government sought to make significant changes to the Supreme Court that would remove its independence and power to control the Parliament.

Several proposed plans would limit the court’s ability to overturn laws it deems unconstitutional, allowing a simple majority of the Knesset to overturn its decisions. It also gives state lawmakers and appointees effective power over the nine-person committee that appoints judges and removes key officials from the attorney general. These and other changes undermine the power of an independent judiciary in an otherwise unchecked parliamentary system.

The issue has created significant rifts in Israeli society prompting even reservists, the backbone of the Israeli army, to threaten to withdraw from service.

  • A sustainable start to Lakme Fashion Week x FDCI 2023

A sustainable start to Lakme Fashion Week x FDCI 2023

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Summer is here and we’re ready to witness what’s trending on the fashion front this season. Lakme Fashion Week 2023 in partnership with the Fashion Design Council of India kickstarted on March 9 at the Jio World Garden in Mumbai. Over the past few years, there’s been so much conversation around sustainability — it’s gone mainstream and it’s here to stay for all the right reasons. Here are the highlights from Day 1 which was dedicated to all things eco-fashion.

    A befitting platform:

INIFD (Inter National Institute of Fashion Design) Gen Next 2023 winners KoAi, KoyToy, Hiro and Rudrakash Dwivedi presented their respective collections. While KoAi focussed on easy prints and airy silhouettes, KoyToy opted for bright colours and cool motifs. Dwidevi’s collection, “Scintilla” consisted of striking ensembles made from metallic trimmings. Hiro’s clothes that took inspiration from the post-apocalyptic world, were all about smart layering combined with interesting techniques such as stone washing, ruching and smocking.

    S for sustainable saris:

Known for her beautiful handwoven saris, designer Anavila Misra presented her collection, “Dabu”. More than 10 years in the business, Misra has created her own version of the classic drape — modern, light and authentic. With this collection, the designer has worked around block printing, vegetable dyeing and muted tones. It was the styling and the raw draping that enhanced the overall look.

    Cool casuals:

Delhi-based label Doodleage presented their collection of chic separates made from recycled materials and upcycled wastes. Inspired by nostalgia, the garments represented the 90s vibe with floral prints, solid colours and denims. Another brand that is perfect for casual outings is Bodice by Ruchika Sachdeva. Her collection of pleated shirt dresses, flared trousers and asymmetrical tops make for perfect day-to-night outfits.

Actress Rakul Preet Singh turned showstopper for designer Shruti Sancheti dressed in a cool Khadico-ord set. The versatile jackets and flowy kurtas from her summer line, “Khadder” are pieces to look out for. Actor Vijay Varma walked for Divyam Mehta and model-turned-actress Neha Dhupia turned muse for the INIFD launchpad. Some other celebrities spotted were Sonali Bendre, Konkana Sen Sharma and Mandira Bedi.

Microsoft to unveil GPT-4 next week with AI videos

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: Microsoft plans to release GPT-4 as early as next week, with the ability to create AI-generated videos from simple text prompts.

Andreas Braun, Chief Technology Officer at Microsoft Germany, recently confirmed that GPT-4 will be unveiled next week at an event called — AI in Focus — Digital Kickoff, reports Windows Central.

“We will introduce GPT-4 next week, where we have multimodal models that will offer completely different possibilities – for example, videos,” Braun was quoted as saying.

The report said that GPT-4 is the next iteration of OpenAI’s Large Language Model (LLM), and it should be significantly more powerful than GPT-3.5, which powers the current version of ChatGPT.

ChatGPT and other GPT-3.5-powered technologies are currently limited to text-based responses.

However, Braun’s comments imply that this may change with the release of GPT-4.

The multimodal models of the LLM could pave the way for video production and other types of content, according to the report.

Meanwhile, the AI-powered Bing search engine has surpassed 100 million daily active users, as ChatGPT’s integration into Bing has helped the company grow its usage within a month like never before.

Its rival Google Search engine has more than 1 billion daily active users.

Roughly one-third of daily Bing preview users are using AI chat daily.

  • T5 tunnel to help travellers bypass most-vulnerable stretch on Jammu-Srinagar NH inauguration next week

T5 tunnel to help travellers bypass most-vulnerable stretch on Jammu-Srinagar NH inauguration next week

    [ad_1]

Ramban/Jammu, Mar 10: Known for its unpredictability due to the sudden shooting of stones from the hillock overlooking the strategic Jammu-Srinagar national highway, the most vulnerable stretch of Panthyal in Ramban district is set to get bypassed with the inauguration of the T5 tunnel next week.

The work on the twin-tube 880-metre tunnel, part of the highway realignment project, started in 2020 and is expected to be completed within the next five days. It will put an end to the threat of shooting stones which have consumed numerous human lives.

Over the past couple of years, a temporary iron and steel tunnel at the crucial stretch provided some relief to the people travelling on the highway. But the rolling stones continued to cause frequent disruptions in the smooth movement of traffic.

“Panthyal has remained a critical stretch for decades. This treacherous stretch will be bypassed with the inauguration of T5 tunnel, which is more or less in the completion stage,” Ramban Deputy Commissioner Mussarat Islam told PTI.

Islam, who is monitoring the project and regularly updates the progress on social media, said the opening of the T5 tunnel would end the fear of shooting stones forever along with frequent traffic jams on the stretch.

In a tweet recently, he said the opening of the T5 tunnel will lay the “ghost of Panthyal to rest, forever”. In another tweet, he shared the photographs of Pavement Quality Concrete (PQC) work for top-wearing layers being laid in T5.

The four-lane project of the 270-km highway, the only all-weather road linking Kashmir with the rest of the country, started in 2011. The work, which included a number of small and major tunnels, bridges and flyovers is likely to be completed by next year after missing several deadlines over the past decade.

“We have the most critical stretch of 66 km passing through the district (Ramban) from Nashri tunnel to Banihal tunnel. The National Highway Authority of India is working on the project. We have got three tunnels in the past year and several other small tunnels and bridges are nearing completion which will bypass other critical spots on the road,” the deputy commissioner said.

He expressed hope that the travel through Ramban district will become very comfortable by July end.

“The Ramban flyover which will bypass Ramban market is expected to be thrown open by April 15, Jaishwal bridge near Karole by March 31 and 873-metre Kunfer tunnel between Peeda and Chanderkote next month as well,” he said.

The officer said the Jammu-Srinagar national highway, also known as NH44, is the only highway where a four-lane project is under progress without stopping vehicular movement.

“On an average, over 10,000 to 11,000 vehicles ply on the highway on a daily basis (between Srinagar and Jammu). It is a lifeline and the only all-weather road so the challenges being faced by the executing agencies are much more than anywhere else,” he said.

He said supplies to Kashmir, including perishable items, are carried via this road.

“The administration is giving full support to NHAI for the completion of the project in a time-bound manner and to ensure smooth flow of the traffic,” he said.

Varinder Singh, an official working with CPPL construction company which is working on the T5 tunnel, said over 200 workers have been engaged to complete the tunnel on a fast-track basis.

“The engineers, supervisors and labourers are all working together in shifts round-the-clock to ensure the opening of the tunnel,” he said.

Social activist Iftiyaz Ahmad said the opening of the tunnel will be a major breakthrough as many lives have been lost due to the shooting of stones in Panthyal.

“We request the central government to sanction some more tunnels in the slide-prone areas to make the road safer,” he said.–(PTI)
